Introduction
This document contains important information and last minute changes related to COMPASS
2003.16 that is not documented elsewhere. COMPASS is an application in the Engineers Desktop
(EDT) R2003.16 release, which provides major new functionality in support of the Drilling & Well
Services applications on the shared EDM data model.

Installation
For details, refer to the Installation section of the Engineers Desktop R2003.16 Drilling
Summary Level Release Notes.
IMPORTANT:
Engineers Desktop 2003.16.0 is a new product. If you are currently using a pre-2003.14.0 EDM database, you
must upgrade your EDM database to 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1.0 prior to upgrading to the 2003.16.0 release. Once
the database has been upgraded to 2003.16, you will no longer be able to access it using the 2003.14 EDT
applications.
If you intend to run both 2003.14 and 2003.16 EDT applications, make a copy of your 2003.14 EDM database,
and upgrade the copy to 2003.16. That way you can access your original 2003.14 database with the 2003.14 EDT
applications, and the 2003.16 EDM database with the 2003.16 EDT applications.
Install 2003.16.0 in a different directory than the previous release. After installing EDT 2003.16.0, upgrade your
existing EDM 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1.0 database to 2003.16.0.

Database Upgrade (MSDE and Oracle)

Refer to the Installation section of the R2003.16.0 Drilling Summary Level Release Notes for
information on upgrading your database from 2003.14.0 or 2003.14.1 to the 2003.16.0 version.
You must upgrade your existing database(s) before using R2003.16.
You must upgrade versions of your database(s) created with earlier versions of the
software before running the R2003.16 software.

Enhancements and New Functionality

Configurable Column Survey Reports
A configurable column survey report is a means of customizing a standard COMPASS survey
report by selecting which columns to display in the survey listing of the standard survey report. The
custom report will be based on a standard COMPASS survey report.
Notes:
Although a custom survey report is based on a standard COMPASS survey report, it will not
change the standard COMPASS survey reports. A new report will be created.
The configurable column survey reports are specific to an individual user and are not stored in
the database.
Folder Attachments
Attached folders are stored as a link in the database. Attached folders that are associated with the
selected data item are displayed in the Associated Data Viewer (below the Well Explorer tree).
Double-click on the attached folder to view and select folder contents using Windows Explorer.
For example, if you have a Site selected in the Well Explorer, you can attach a link to a folder
containing files related to the Site.
Survey Editor Modified to Include Raw Magnetic Data

Raw magnetic data can be added to the Survey Editor for magnetic survey tools.
Offset Data Boxes

Offset Data Boxes in the Wall Plot Composer were enhanced to present data for an offset well or
for the reference well.
Survey Program Optimization

Survey program optimization has been added to assist users in optimizing survey tool selection
based on target confidence requirements. A Wizard was added to simplify the process of
optimizing the planned survey program to generate the most cost effective survey program to
produce maximum confidence drilling targets.

Point Interpolation Algorithm

The point interpolation algorithm has been enhanced to interpolate all survey points with the
interpolation depth. In the past, only the first point along the survey with the interpolation depth
was interpolated.
For the R2003.14.1.0 release

COMPASS added the ability to Export/Import WITSML v. 1.2 survey and target data to/from the
EDM database.

The following item(s) were identified as problems in the previous release and have been fixed for
the COMPASS 2003.16 and the 2003.14.1.0 releases.
