FAMILY

Female ex-offenders are more likely to have served as

the primary caretakers of children prior to entering


prison, and have plans to return to the role upon
release. This fact transforms the experience of many
incarcerated women...Reentry Considerations for

SUBSTANCE ABUSE

On every measure of drug use, women offenders in

state prison reported higher usage (40 percent)


compared to males (32 percent)./ Statistics on

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Although women in state prisons are more likely


than men to have a high school diploma (30 percent
versus 25 percent) , many women offenders lack the
education and vocational skills to compete in the

MINDSET

Female inmates had higher rates of mental

health problems than male inmates (73


percent of females versus of 55 percent of

SEXUAL/PHYSICAL ABUSE

Nearly 6 in 10 women in state prisons

had experienced physical or sexual


abuse in the past. 69 percent reported
that the assault occurred before age 18.

ECONOMIC INEQUALITY/POVERTY

Women offenders are both underemployed

and unemployed, work fewer hours and


make less per hour than their male
counterparts, and are often employed in
nonpermanent, low-level, or entry-level
occupations with little chance for

CULTURE/ ETHNICITY

Black females were imprisoned at

between 2 and 3 times the rate of


white females, while Hispanic
females were imprisoned at
between 1 and 3 times the rate of

They are eternally viewed

through the distorted lenses of


criminalization, stigmatization
and marginalization. Such
distortions undergird policies
that shut these women out
of mainstream societyfor
