Winter 2015 Resources for the Pipet Calibration Assignment (Experiment #1)
(I) Technique Videos (mp4 format)
Click on the link below and click on the Course-Related icon on the bottom of the Web page. Click on General and Organic Chemistry to select the specific video (1) Laboratory Safety (2) Use of a Pipet NOTE: You may NOT be able to watch the videos through UCLA Wifi. UCLA Wifi provides free internet access for students but with very limited connectivity. We recommend that you try using a different ISP to access the videos.
(II) Online Resources
General Guide for Writing Chemistry Lab Reports Tutorial on Significant Figures Common Laboratory Glassware Common Laboratory Equipment If you need a copy of the procedure and the background reading materials from the lab manual for this experiment, you may download the file(s) from CCLE. The documents are posted under the Reports Guidelines folder on CCLE. All the necessary files are organized by weeks within the folder. By posting the first experiment online would allow all of you to have sufficient amount of time to purchase the textbook materials. However, all of you should make sure that you purchase all the required textbook materials as soon as possible. Any materials and/or procedures that are directly from laboratory manual will no longer be posted online after this experiment.

Winter 2015 Pre-Lab Report Guideline for the Pipet Calibration Assignment (Experiment #1)
(III) Pre-lab Report Guideline
You MUST write ALL your reports in your lab notebook. Type written report is NOT acceptable for the course. Please show up on time to your lab. If you show up late to your lab by more than 10 minutes, your space will be re-assigned to a student on the waiting list. You will have to drop the class. DEADLINE TO DROP AN IMPACTED COURSE (CHEM 20L): FRIDAY, January 16th
(A) Title of the Assignment
(B) Complete Citation /Reference This part should include the proper citation of the procedure as well as any procedural modification. Refer to the link ACS Reference Style posted under "Useful Class Links" on CCLE. Procedure modification - Air-displacement pipetter will not be used in the experiment (C) Short Introduction For this part of the report, you should focus on the objective(s) and the purpose(s) of the assignment include any experimental technique you will be using the assignment. This part of the report should be no more than one quarter page in length. (D) Procedures (Flowchart Format MAXIMUM ONE PAGE IN LENGTH) A copy of the Sample Flowchart is posted under the "Reports Guidelines" folder on CCLE. The files are organized by weeks. You will construct a procedural flowchart only for the Calibration of a 10-mL Volumetric Pipet (refer to page 41 of the manual) for this pre-lab report. (E) Study Questions Complete the following study questions (SHOW ALL YOUR WORK FOR NUMERICAL QUESTIONS) You should read through the tutorial on SIGNIFICANT FIGURES posted on the previous page under Online Resources before you start working on the study questions. You should also review the lecture materials before working on the study questions. g (i) Define the terms accuracy and precision (ii) Determine the % relative error for the quantity (0.201M 0.004M) (iii) Explain whether the following label is scientifically correct? Show ALL your work and reasoning 0.05M 1% (iv) Determine the % relative error for the following quantities: If there is no uncertainty given for a specific value, assume an absolute error of 1 in the last digit. (a) (7.510.02) - (1.470.05) (b) (0.2045g58.44g/mol) 0.10000L (v) Determine the absolute error for the final value in (iv) b ONLY
