English Teachers Readiness in Implementing

Curriculum 2013

Curriculum has been trending topic when it comes to the change of
Education Minister holders issue. Some say Minister changes, Curriculum
follows to change. It was happened several times in Indonesia Education
and has not become public secret anymore. Curriculum basically is
designed as a guideline for educators and teachers to run the teaching
and learning process with considering the development of world demand
in many sectors such as technology, economy, health, tourism, culture,
etc. The renewal curriculum named 2013 curriculum (K13) is believed
providing the space for students to learn English more active, creative,
self-dependent, etc in figuring the problems out which might be occured in
real life. Scientific approach which is applied in this curriculum become a
good point to assist students in achieving the objectives that is stated in
core competency and basic competency together with the three great
supporting methods like project based learning, problem based learning ,
and discovery learning. Authentic assessment also be used to measure
the students achievement in three big domains; cognitive, affective, and
psycomotoric besides other alternative in assessment such as journal,
portfolio, and self/peer assessment.

A great guideline of teaching and

learning process has all packaged in 2013 curriculum. This package will
not arrive to the addresser (students) if the sender (government/educator
holders) is careless choosing the delivery agents (teachers) to deliver it. It
means that

delivery agents or teachers play significant role in the

delivering process (implementing process). Teachers have to understand


exactly what is the gist of the package, how to deliver it, how to use the
measurement, and how to give feedback. Then, a question occurs whether
they are ready in implementing 2013 curriculum.

To begin with, English teachers, in specific, initially prepared


themselves in implementing 2013 curriculum by following workshop or
training held by the teachers training institution or others like. They, one
by one, were invited to gather in a chosen school to get the curriculum
training for a week or at least five days from morning to afternoon. Like
others training, they should accomplish several tasks given by the
instructors such as the preparation of lesson plan, the design of
achievement test and the measurement, until the performance of peer
teaching which those refer to 2013 curriculum. English teachers would get
many input for their teaching preparation until performance which is
designed to familiarize them with curriculum components. In short time,
they were drilled to be ready to implement what they have got from the
training in their real teaching and learning class. Besides training, English
teacher should join teachers association to update themselves with
update teaching techniques or methods.
Secondly, realize that the need of supporting information source in
implementing this curriculum in the class, English teachers have to
provide themselves with many approappriate source of information such
as textbook, internet, electronic media, etc.

For instance, teachers could

use electronic media or mass media such as news program or


advertisement on TV or opinion section in newspaper or manual book of
electronic machine as the lesson material about text genre, While internet
could be utilized to obtain other variance of materials from texts, audios,
up to videos. Through the help of those information sources, teacher will
gain many lesson materials which could be used in their teaching class
and support the learning process. It is relevant with the concept of the
curriculum which is learning for real life.
Then, the materials will be perfect when they meet with proper tools
to deliver with such as laptop, speaker, OHP, school wifi, etc. Teachers
now in this technology era must be able to operate computer or laptop at
least they understand how to utilize the applications such as microsoft
word, excel, and power point (microsoft office). Capable in utilizing

microsoft power point, English teachers could create interesting slide in


which consist of combination several features such as text, picture, audio,
or video which hopefully could motivate the students to be more creative
than their teacher. These tools help English teachers in delivering the
material effectively. They do not need to use marker and board repeatedly
when they have to move to another class because it will disturb time
management in the class. Moreover, the ability in operating the
technology nowadays is a must included English teachers.
In sum, English teacher should always update and ready themselves
in every changes occured in Education such as curriculum as a sign of the
global demand changes. Whether they have to follow training, workshop,
or seminar relate the curriculum to sharpen they understanding about the
core components of 2013 curriculum. Or they have to realize the higher
expectations come from outside which requiring them to be creative
manager for their teaching class in providing materials and serving them
with approppriate tools. By preparing those above, English teacher will
always be ready to implement 2013 curriculum well or others curriculum
underlying the changes of global needs.
