Residents view proposals for Main Street

development

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Germantown residents had the opportunity to view concepts related to the development of an area behind Main
Street during a meeting at Village Hall Jan. 26.
The meeting was agreed to by the Plan Commission Jan.
12 and comes partially in response to a proposal from the
owner of the Old Town Inn and Von Rothenburg Bier Stube for
a recreational park behind the business. Old Town is proposing a park area that would include a pavilion and two surrounding cabanas for vending, a children's play area and
space for 200 parking spots.
The event was officially a Plan Commission meeting but it
was structured in a workshop format in which designs were
presented and residents had the opportunity to express concerns to commission members and village staff.
At the Jan. 12 meeting, Trustee David Baum presented conceptual designs for the area which included items presented in
the Old Town plans but which sought to address concerns such
as traffic. The workshop included Baums concepts and the
original proposals from Von Rothenburg.
Tonight was a night for people to come out and voice
their concerns and get educated on what the project actually
was, because until you actually see it and hear it, its still a lot
of speculation, said Chaz Hastings, owner of the Von
Rothenburg and Old Town.
Hastings noted that the village is planning on long-term
issues such as traffic for the area and other development.
Weve heard a lot tonight a lot of positives, a lot of

Dear Dr. Winter, I have heard about some newer

dentures recently called CAD/CAM dentures. Do you do
these and what are the advantages of this type of denture?
Dear James, I have been at the forefront of denture
technology for many years and currently lecture about
denture technology to other dentists. In our office we
offer Deluxe Turbyfill dentures, CAD/CAM dentures
and standard economy dentures.
The differences between these types of dentures have
to do with the amount of time taken to make the dentures,
the processing technique and the quality and type of
denture teeth selected.
There are currently two types of CAD/CAM or
computer aided design and computer aided
manufacturing companies making dentures. One type of
denture the Dentca denture is an extremely accurately
fitting denture that can be fabricated in as few as two
visits. This technique involves taking a highly accurate
impression and bite registration at the first visit and then
at the second visit delivering the denture! An optional
try-in appointment is also available. These dentures are
beautiful and extremely accurate. The advantage of
milled dentures is that once the denture is designed it can
be remade in 2 days! The computer can simply print
another denture if one is ever lost. Patients must realize
that gum tissues can change so there may be a need to
reline a reprinted set or take a new impression if gum
changes have occurred. The material that is used to print
the dentures is non-porous and remains color stable
without incurring as much stain as traditional dentures as
well.
Turbyfill deluxe dentures can take 5-7 visits and
denture teeth are set with the patient present over a twohour appointment. These are highly characterized
beautiful dentures but now with a new computer
designed denture we can make dentures in far fewer
visits. We offer consultations to any of our readers to see
if Dentca dentures may be right for you.
Dear Dr. Winter I have severe tetracycline staining on
my teeth and I am very embarrassed to smile. What can
I do about this?
Dear Suzanne, there are many ways to try and

WE PROTECT YOUR
DREAMS.

improve tetracycline stained smiles. For mild cases we

offer different whitening options from Zoom Advanced
Power to Kor advanced deep bleaching. These can
often eliminate the need for veneers or crowns to cover
darker stains. For patients with gray teeth or dark bands
of brown and gray then veneers or porcelain crowns
may be required to block out the dark color of the
underlying tooth structure.
We invite our readers to call us at 414-464-9021 to
schedule your denture, implant or cosmetic consultation
visit or comprehensive exam and x-ray appointment.

... A good exchange

From page 1
concerns. Well work within those boundaries to be great neighbors and make
everybody happy, Hastings said.
Commission member Robert Warren
said he was impressed with the number of
residents who came to the workshop.
There is some concern with noise,
thats always been out there. Traffic was a
concern also, Warren said.
Warren said Baums concepts could
open up ways to address some of the concerns.
Overall it was a good exchange, letting people see whats out there. Its good
for the Plan Commission to take that information and process that to figure out what
the next steps are, Warren said.
Village President Dean Wolter also
mentioned the turnout and said residents
had comments and questions for the people who were available to answer them.
It was successful because all those
who wanted answers and wanted to come
out and see what was happening were
able to, Wolter said.
Wolter said the workshop gives the
commission direction as to whether or not
to create an overall master plan and what
it uses should be.
Wolter added the hope is to create a
plan for a smaller area behind Main Street
that will drive development in other areas
that may require additional planning.
But lets start with something that we

than deal with something thats too big and
not be able to get anything or any movement on it, Wolter said. If you start small
and become successful in movement and
progress, others areas may become a component of that where we can push out to it.
One thing begets the other, and my hope is
through working this area, other people
will look at opportunities and notice
opportunities that are around it and want to
get involved.

Germantown Fire Department

seeking Paid-on-Call staff
The Germantown Fire Department
(GFD) is looking for men and women who
want to make a difference in our community
by becoming a Paid-on-Call Firefighter or
EMT. The work is hard but the rewards are
great.
The GFD is a combination fire department, which means there are a small number
of staffed firefighters but the majority of the
members are paid-on-call. That means when
an emergency incident occurs firefighters
come from their homes to the fire stations to
respond. While this is cost effective, we
need you, We Need You to become a member of our team.
If you want to be part of a dynamic
group of men and women who are willing to
provide emergency service to their community 24 hours a day, We Need You. If you
ever saw an ambulance or fire truck
responding to an emergency or witnessed a
car accident and wished you had the knowledge to help, We Need You.

If you want to go home knowing you

made a difference in someones life, or
saved someones property, We Need You.
We will provide you with the training to
be a firefighter and EMT, with the equipment
to operate safely and with other team members to mentor you.
If you have any questions you can visit
our RECRUITMENT CENTER PAGE on the
Village of Germantowns Web Site at
www.village.ger mantown.wi.us
<http://www.village.germantown.wi.us>
and select the fire department tab. You can

BBB warns of IRS scams

The Better Business Bureau Serving
Wisconsin continues to receive calls from
consumers stating they received a call from
the IRS saying they owe money which
needs to be paid promptly. The BBB has
also received calls from local accountants

calling to report such calls on behalf of a

client.
Do not become a victim, says Ran
Hoth, CEO and President. This is an
aggressive phone scam in which callers use
scare tactics in an attempt to get your

deportation, or loss of a business or drivers
license, if payment is not made.
Rosemarie Bosch of Rosie's Tax &
Bookkeeping Services, LLC, Franklin tells
the BBB that she has received calls from
clients of all ages since June.
"I've been receiving reports from clients
saying they've received unsolicited calls
from people with thick, foreign accents
misidentifying themselves as being with the
IRS and stating they owe money", says
Rosemarie. "Theyre told that if they don't
pay up, there will be a warrant out for their
arrest. I tell my clients this is a scam, they
shouldnt worry, and the IRS would never
call them on the phone."
Being called the largest ever telephone fraud scam targeting innocent taxpayers, the IRS has been posting warnings
for months alerting the public about callers
posing as Internal Revenue Service representatives in an effort to defraud.
The IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, or request payment without
giving you the opportunity to question or
appeal the amount they say you owe, It
also does not ask for payment using a prepaid debit card or wire transfer, and doesnt make threats such as deportation or
arrest.

Tips to stay warm

Theres no doubt that heating and cooling your home is the largest energy expense
in your home. In fact, according to the
Department of Energy, heating and cooling
accounts for about 56 percent of the energy
used in a typical U.S. home, which makes
efforts to reduce energy costs that much
more important.
As you heat your home this winter, the
experts at the York brand of heating and air
conditioning recommend the following:
Perform regular maintenance. Clean air filters, seal any duct leaks, make sure registers
are clear of obstructions and check your
insulation. The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) reports that improper insula-

tion can reduce system efficiency by as much

as 30 percent.
Hire a qualified technician to inspect
and service your home comfort system. The
technician will make sure your system is
working properly and at peak efficiency. As
a rule of thumb, heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces need annual tune-ups, while gas-fired
equipment can be serviced every other year.
Consider replacing an older, inefficient
furnace or heat pump. A knowledgeable
technician will be able to recommend a new,
more efficient replacement system, such as
ENERGY STARqualified equipment that
can help save you money on energy bills.
Efficiency is measured as annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces and
heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF)
for heat pumps. The higher the AFUE or
HSPF, the more efficient the unit and the less
energy it requires to heat your home.
Adjust your thermostat. By lowering it
just a few degrees in cooler temperatures,
you can help your heating system work less
to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
Think about installing a programmable
thermostat. Programming your thermostat to
accommodate your familys time away from
home and sleeping schedule will help to
ensure that your system is operating only
when you need it.

Boys basketball: Falls beats Hamilton

The Menomonee Falls boys basketball
team topped rival Hamilton Jan. 27, 35-29.
Bryce McMurtry led all scorers with 13

with 12 points. It was the first win by
Menomonee Falls against Hamilton in three
years.
With the win, Menomonee Falls
improved to 2-5 in the Greater Metro
Conference and 6-9 overall. Hamilton
dropped to 1-5 in the conference and 6-9
overall.
Germantown remained undefeated Jan.
23, as the Warhawks outscored Whitefish
Bay 44-26 to win 67-53. Max Keefe led
Germantown with 17 points while Brian
Studer and Juwan McCloud added 15 and
14 points.

With the win, Germantown remained in

in the most recent Division I state coaches
polls.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran remained on
top of the Flyway Conference standings
with a 75-34 win at Mayville Jan. 27. The
Chargers Ethan Bublitz led all scorers with
19 points. With the win, Kettle Moraine
Lutheran had an 8-0 conference record
and a 13-1 overall mark. The Chargers
were to host second place Laconia at 7:30

Girls basketball: Germantown

stops Bay comeback
In a contest that could have been won
by Whitefish Bay, Germantown showed it
can close a tight game Jan. 23.
After the Blue Dukes Ashley Reed tied
the score at 46-46 with 1:31 remaining,
Germantown scored the next seven points
to win 53-57.
Bay held a 11-8 lead after the first quarter, as Germantown missed their first three
three-point attempts. Reed gave the Blue
Dukes a 18-16 lead after scoring on a
layup and converting a free throw after
being followed. But Calli Lemke converted
a three point basket for Germantown to
start a 7-1 run to give Germantown a 23-19
lead at halftime.
The teams stayed close through the
third quarter and Whitefish Bay took a 4442 lead with 2:31 remaining. Kenzie
Schmitz scored on a layup with 2:20
remaining. She then converted a three point
basket with 1:31 remaining to give the
Warhawks a 49-46 lead. Val Meissner then
converted four free throws in two separate
trips to the line. The final points of the game
were scored on a long-range three point
basket by Emma Jonas of Whitefish Bay at
the buzzer.
It was pretty ominous when we missed
three (three point baskets) on the first possession that it was going to be a tough
shooting night, Germantown Coach Matt
Stuve said afterward. But Monica

(Hubrich) came off the bench and was

tremendous. (She) hit some big shots and
kept us in it.
Meissner led Germantown with 15
points while Reed led all scorers with 18
points. With the win, Germantown held a
9-0 North Shore Conference record after
the win. All other teams in the conference
have at least two losses.
Five games left in the conference season, still having that two game cushion is
key because we still have Cedarburg and
Homestead coming up, Stuve said. This
one is big as far still having some leeway.
Germantown started last week with a
60-52 win over Kettle Moraine Lutheran
Jan. 27. Val Meissner led Germantown with
19 points while Mikayla Voigt led Kettle
Moraine Lutheran with 22 points. With the
win, Germantown improved its overall
record to 14-2.
Hamilton tops Falls
Hamilton topped Menomonee Falls
Jan. 27, 54-30. Hamilton's Taylor Klug led
all scorers with 16 points while Madison
Grzesiak led Menomonee Falls with 14
points. Afterward Hamilton was in second
place in the Greater Metro Conference
with a 5-2 conference mark and a 10-5
overall record while Menomonee Falls
dropped to 1-6 in conference and 3-13
overall.

Germantown wrestlers
fifth at Raider Invite
The Germantown wrestling team finished fifth at the Sheboygan North Raider
Invite Jan. 24.
Germantown was led by Zack Szohr,
who won the 106 pound division. Szohr
recorded pins over Reese Thompson of
Oshkosh West and Trenton Jackson of
Moline before winning a 9-7 decision over

Brady Koontz of Stevens Point.

Germantown got fifth place finishes
from Mason Wheeler at 126, Waymon
McNeal at 132, Tommy Nelson at 152,
and David Nilles at 285.

Carver, Dominique Dawes, Frederick
Douglass and Jackie Robinson just some
of the many notable African-Americans
who have made an impact on American
history. Black History Month recognizes
them, and all African-Americans, for the
contributions they have made to American
history.
February is Black History Month, a celebration of the accomplishments of AfricanAmericans, past and present. But it wasn't
always a month-long event. It began as a
notion of just one man, Dr. Carter G.
Woodson.
Born to former slaves James and Eliza,
Woodson spent much of his childhood

which abolished slavery. Although the

amendment was signed in January, it wasn't until February that slaves started hearing the news.
Woodson died April 3, 1950, but
Negro History Week lived on. Spurred on
by the African-American community in the
1960s, it was renamed Black History
Week. In 1975 in response to Senator John
Warner's call for organizations to do something special in honor of the bicentennial,
Woodson's association, now called the
Association for the Study of Afro-American
Life and History (ASALH), turned Black
History Week into Black History Month,
and provided a theme for the month and
sub-themes for each week.
Today the association continues to
sponsor the event and designates a new
theme every year. It also produces study
kits and other materials to help schools,
colleges and other organizations celebrate
the event. For more information or to learn
how you can get involved, contact the
ASALH or check out its Web site
www.asalh.com. From the notion of just
one man, Dr. Woodson G. Carter, Black
History Month has evolved into an enduring tribute to African-Americans.

working in the coal mines of Kentucky. Too

busy and too poor to attend school regularly, he taught himself the basics, enrolled
in high school at age 20 and graduated
two years later. Woodson attended Berea
College in Kentucky, and after just two
years of study, graduated in 1901. He went
on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1912.
During his studies Woodson made a
startling discovery: There was very little discussion of African-Americans in American
history books and what little there was was
often wrong. To correct the situation,
Woodson took steps to write AfricanAmericans into the nation's history. He
founded the Association for the Study of
Negro Life and History in Chicago on
September 9, 1915, and a year later, the
publication Journal of Negro History. In
1926, he established Negro History Week
in February to focus national attention on
the contributions made by AfricanAmericans to American history.
Why Woodson decided to hold Negro
History Week in February is a topic of
great debate. Some say he did so to honor
the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and
Frederick Douglass. Others argue he chose

George Washington Carver

By Bob Grimson
George Washington Carver was born
into slavery in Missouri sometime in the
1860s. Through hard work and perseverance, he would become one of this country's
greatest educators and researchers.
Forced to live on his own at a young age
after his mother was kidnapped by slave
traders, Carver was an observer of life and
the world, developing an interest in plants.
He managed to finish high school and attend
both Simpson College and Iowa Agricultural
College (now Iowa State University), earning
a bachelor's and a master's degree. While in
college, Carver showed his talents in many
areas. He led the YMCA and the debate
club, attained the highest student rank in the
campus military unit, published poetry and
even had a pair of paintings on display at the
World's Fair in Chicago in 1893.
Carver's knowledge of plants was so
thorough that he was asked to become Iowa
Agricultural College's first African-American
faculty member in 1894. In 1896, he joined
Booker T. Washington at the famed Tuskegee
Institute and directed its agricultural research
until his death in 1943. Carver believed that
research should have practical value and
help people. He used the idea of agricultural
extension to benefit farmers in the South by
taking agricultural knowledge directly to
them and their farms. While at Tuskegee,
Carver discovered more than 300 products

that could be made from peanuts and over

100 from sweet potatoes and encouraged
southern farmers to end their reliance on cotton and diversify with peanuts, sweet potatoes and peas.
A winner of the prestigious Spingarn
Prize, the highest award given by the
NAACP, Carver took almost his entire life's
savings and used it to start the George
Washington Carver Foundation to continue
his work. He was buried on the campus of
Tuskegee Institute, next to his friend Booker T.
Washington. The recipient of many honors
before his death, Carver was honored
posthumously with special postage stamps
and election to both the Hall of Fame of
Great Americans and the National Inventors
Hall of Fame.

When now-24-year-old Kayla Kreckel

2014, many of her dreams and aspirations
were put on hold. The Germantown resident
was forced to drop out of school at UWMilwaukee where she was majoring in child

months of chemotherapy treatments.
It hasnt been an easy road, but
Kayla has had a positive attitude, said
Kaylas mother, Valerie Kreckel, in a
phone interview with the Express News.
As their daughter continues on this difficult path, Valerie and Kaylas father,
Robert, are looking for ways to help the situation, both financially and by turning a
