School
district
is ready
for PARCC

A walk in the snow

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

Although New Jersey was spared the worst of last weeks snowstorm on Jan. 19 and Jan. 20, enough snow still fell to leave Voorhees
with a healthy coating of white. Despite the weather, out for a walk was resident Lawrence Nichols as he strolled past the Voorhees
Branch library.

Officials with the Voorhees

Township School District believe
they are ready for the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test
that all students in grades three
through 11 throughout the state
will be taking later this year.
The new PARCC exam will test
students in mathematics and
English language arts and will be
replacing the current state-mandated standardized test, the New
Jersey Assessment of Skills and
Knowledge.
The change in standardized
tests comes as a result of 20
states, New Jersey included, that
came together and created a common set of K-12 standards in
math and language arts to ready
students for what they need to be
successful in college or careers
beyond high school.

Schools time to shine at the Jan.
28 meeting of the Voorhees Township School District Board of Education.
The meeting took place at Signal Hill, and opened with a video
presentation from Principal
Sharon Stallings who showed the
different features and activates
that make Signal Hill unique.
The presentation started with
Stallings showcasing how Signal
Hill was the only school in the
district with a preschool program, and showed how the school
prepared 3- and 4-year-old students for the road to the districts
elementary school programs.
Pre-school teacher Nicole Ashton said the program integrates

typical and special needs students, and creates an environment of acceptance.

Ashton said Signal Hill also
provides student-driven technology lessons as well as hands-on activities and interactive centers.
Our preschools are given access to the same technology that
will be utilized as they progress
through their education at Signal
Hill, Ashton said
Relating to technology and the
older grades at the school,
teacher Shawn Seppanen explained how for one project, the
school had the fourth graders and
second graders interview each
other and report the results using
school iPads and later writing
about the results they found.

Relay for Life of Voorhees planned for June 12-13

I am proud to announce that our community will be hosting the 2015 Relay for
Life of Voorhees at Eastern Regional High
School from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 12 until
6 a.m. on Saturday, June 13.
A Kick-Off Rally will be held at the
Voorhees Diner on Route 73 on Tuesday
evening, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. Join us to begin
building momentum for the Relay.
The mission of Relay for Life and the
American Cancer Society is to save lives
and create a world with more birthdays by
helping people get well, helping people stay
well, finding cures and fighting back. More
than 12 million cancer survivors in America, and countless others who have avoided
cancer, will celebrate a birthday this year
thanks in part to progress the American
Cancer Society is making.
While the society has made great strides
with the cancer death rate rapidly declining over the last 20 years, there is still
much work to be done. In South Jersey, 208
people in the region or 54 people in Camden County are diagnosed with cancer
each week. In 2015, almost 11,000 people in
South Jersey and 2,800 in Camden County

will hear the daunting words, "You have

cancer."
As the official
sponsor of birthdays,
the Society knows
how important each
and every birthday
can be. With your
help, the Society is
determined to finish
and make this cancer's last century.
With Relay for Life,
you can help finish
Michael
the fight.
Mignogna
Started in 1985,
Relay for Life began MAYORS MESSAGE
with one man who
circled around a track for 24 hours, raising
$27,000. This year, Relay for Life has grown
to more than 5,000 communities and more
than 25 countries worldwide.
Relay for Life is an overnight, community event where teams of family, friends and
neighbors circle a track to celebrate cancer
survivors, remember those lost to cancer

and join together as a community to fight

back. The event kicks off with the Survivor Lap to celebrate and honor our survivors. At dusk is the Luminaria Ceremony, where hundreds of white bags are illuminated by candlelight to honor those who
have won the battle against cancer or remember those who are no longer with us.
Along with ceremonies, there is food,
games and music to keep the Relay going
throughout the night. Relay for Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will
not be forgotten, those who face cancer will
be supported, and one day cancer will be
eliminated.
As in years past, "Team Mignogna" will
again be participating in honor of family
and friends who have battled cancer.

We have all been touched in some way
by cancers devastation. Join us at the

p.m. on Feb. 10 and lets gear up for the 2015

showed how teaching about astronomy concepts caused fourthgrade teachers to create a fourthgrade stargazing night where students gathered and used an app
on the iPads that provided a map
of the night sky for them to
search the actual sky above them.
As within all of our schools
within the district, technology resources are abundant and integrated
throughout
instructionwe never worry about the
challenge of leveraging these opportunities,
Stallings
said.
Technology helps prepare our
preschool on through our fifth
graders for the globally connected, information saturated world
that they are a part of.
In other news:
The board awarded Signal
Hill teacher Ann Osborne with an
achievement award celebrating
her 25 years of service in the district.
Osborne, who teaches second
grade at the school, has also
taught first and third grades during her 25 years at the school.
Board president Richard Nelson said he is always amazed
when people have stayed in the

district for long periods of time,

such as 25 years, and when youre
in the people business, the main
reason people might leave their
jobs is because of other people,
but the opposite of that might
hold true as well.
People leave because of people, but I think that also correlates to people staying because of
people, and the fact that people do
stay in our district for 25 years
and celebrate that, I think that we
all get to celebrate that because of
the relationships that are formed
within our schools and with the
people, Nelson said.
Board member Barbara Dunleavy was sworn in as vice president.
During the boards previous reorganization meeting on Jan. 7,
board member Denise Kirkland
was absent, and the vote for vice
president continuously resulted
in a 4-4 tie between Dunleavy and
board member Bruce Karpf.
As per board rules, since no decision was reached through three
consecutive votes at the Jan. 7
meeting, the decision was left to
the county, which gave the board
vice president position to Dunleavy.
The next meeting of the
Voorhees Township School District BOE is scheduled for Feb. 25

Parent concerned with loss

of instructional time due to exam
PARENT
Continued from page 1
The PARCC assessment is now
meant to test students on those
standards, and although several
of the states involved in creating
the standards have since opted
out of implementing the PARCC
exam itself, New Jersey is scheduled to have students take the test
later this year.
As far as curriculum goes,
weve adopted the common core
standards and weve been implementing them, said district superintendent for curriculum and
instruction Diane Young. Our
students have been taking standardized tests forever, and they do
quite well, so we feel like our students are ready and prepared for
the assessment.
Another change from the previous NJASK assessment to the upcoming PARCC test is that students will take the PARCC test entirely on a computer.
However, Young said the district already has a lot of technology integrated into its curriculum,
so kids have been exposed to computer work before, and the technology itself can handle the test.
Theyve seen practice assessments so they can maneuver
some of the applications, so in
that regard, were ready, Young
said. Our infrastructure is
strong. We have enough bandwidth and devices for all the students to take the assessment, and
a lot of support is in place.
Another issue regarding the
test is parents throughout the
states administering PARCC who
are against the assessment for
various reasons, including the
standards being tested, the difficulty of the test itself or the fact
the test is being taken on a computer.
One Voorhees parent against
the test is Dina Prendergast, who
spoke at the most recent Voorhees
Township School District Board
of Education meeting and said
she would be refusing to let her
child take the exam.

I am tired of more and more

testing on the federal level and
feel that assessment tools are already in place in teacher, classroom and project assessments,
Prendergast said. I feel that the
PARCC testing is taking away
valuable time where my child
could receive valuable learning in
instructional areas.
Prendergast also said she
hoped the district would let students who arent taking the test
go to another area where they
wouldnt lose out on instructional
time, but according to Young, the
district must adhere to state
guidelines, which have said students must be presented with the
test even if they choose not to
take it.
Our kids have been taking
standardized tests for years. We
care about them. Well make
them feel as comfortable as we
can throughout the process just
like we did the New Jersey Ask
and California Achievement and
IOWA and all the standardized
testing weve been giving over the
years, Young said.
Young said schools at this point

have already had all students log

onto a practice test to monitor
bandwidth and ensure the system
was able to handle the stress, and
now all thats left is organizing for
the actual day.
Once the testing period is finished, Young said the results
would not be used for placement
or grading purposes, but simply
to help the district look at the
strengths and weaknesses of students and work to remediate
those weaknesses.
It just gives us an idea for how
prepared our kids are and allows
us to make adjustments in what
we do with the curriculum and
our teaching practicing, Young
said.

Report Potholes to Camden

County Public Works
By Freeholder Ian Leonard
Despite the best
efforts of the Camden County Department of Public
Works, harsh winter weather takes a
toll on our local
roadway system.
In addition to salting, brining and
plowing our roads
during this seasons winter
storms, Camden County Department of Public Works
crews have been aggressively locating and repairing potholes
on all county maintained roads.
To help us combat its damaging effects, the Freeholder
Board is requesting your help in
identifying areas of concern
throughout the county. You can
report road hazards that you encounter to the Camden County
Public Works Hotline (856) 5662980. The number is answered
24 hours a day, seven days a
week, and provides results.
We know that residents are
our best eyes on the roadways
and that is why we need you to
become engaged in this effort to
make Camden County a better
place to live and drive. In addition to winter potholes, you can
contact us any time of year to
report weeds, trash and line
striping on our roadway network from the Delaware River
to the Pine Barrens.
This program is dependent on
Camden County residents and
your elected officials working
together to address areas in
need of improvement. As a
Board we are always looking at
ways to create more access and
engagement with the public.
The Department of Public
Works Hotline provides direct
access to a significant department with a core mission of
keeping cars on the roads and
our region moving.
As a Freeholder, I believe it is
imperative to offer our services

through
digital
formats as well. I
urge residents to
use social media to
contact the Freeholder Board to
bring items to our
attention. You can
follow
Camden
County on Facebook and Twitter
and we will respond to the same
requests for potholes, overgrowth, crosswalk striping and
trash along our highway system.
Please use this service as a
one-stop shop where residents
can have questions answered
and problems solved. I am confident that this program will improve our roadways, curbs and
crosswalks throughout our 228
square miles.
Furthermore, these tangible
enhancements will improve our
neighborhoods and gives us
cleaner surroundings that will
create dividends for our quality
of life and our long-term future
as a region. We understand that
continuing to maintain our resources and assets makes this
region second to none.
The Camden County Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining 1,200 lane
miles of county roadway and 50
bridges. Public Works Department personnel are on call 24
hours a day, 7 days a week to
serve the residents of Camden
County.
For more information, contact
