Melbourne students Hon Weng Chong, Andrew Lin, Kim Ramchen and
Mahsa Salehi became national superstars when they won the Australian
finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition in 2012.
The prestigious competition requires student teams to devise projects that
will help tackle some of the worlds toughest problems.
Our students developed the StethoCloud an intelligent, cloud-powered,
mobile-hybrid stethoscope that is able to diagnose childhood pneumonia.
The device could potentially save countless lives if implemented in the
developing world.
The team was awarded a $75 000 grant to continue evolving their project
into a real-world business.

BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology is the use of biological
knowledge to develop new processes
and products for use in industry, health,
agribusiness and other areas of human
technology. Biotechnology advances
can be based on knowledge from
biological sciences, chemical sciences,
physical sciences or engineering.
This major provides you with
knowledge about how the products of
scientific research are commercialised,
as well as training in a relevant
discipline area. As such, the major is not
tied to a particular discipline area but
will enable you to develop technology
from basic discipline knowledge in at
least one area of biomedical science.
This major is also available in the
Bachelor of Science.
GENETICS
The Genetics major integrates
knowledge across the breadth of
genetics, including an integrated
practical capstone subject in which you
will develop an understanding of the
application of experimental analysis to
solving problems in biology.
This major is also available in the
Bachelor of Science.
HEALTH INFORMATICSQ
Modern healthcare and medical
research are information-intensive
activities. This major introduces
you to the interdisciplinary field of
health and biomedical informatics,
and the core principles and practices
of the expert health informatician.
The major integrates biomedical
information technology and knowledge
management, the socio-economic
challenges of healthcare systems
and new methods of clinical and
epidemiological research. In Australia
and internationally the demand is
increasing for people with specialised
knowledge and skills who can lead
applications of e-health for patient care
and disease management.
IMMUNOLOGYQ
Immunology is the study of our immune
system. Through this major, you will
learn how immunology can apply to
a range of areas in the biomedical
sciences. The major opens up careers
