Commissioning overview

The installation of SURPASS hiT7300 comprises shelves, racks and cable assembly.
TransNet provides a list of material for the entire network and for each NE in
particular, and a bill of material of each DWDM route. The assembly of all the cards,
in each shelf, and all the cabling connections must be based on TransNet reports for
a successful system installation and commissioning.
SURPASS hiT7300 has to be configured on initial commissioning, prior to the regular
operation. NE and Optical Link commissioning is mandatory after all the racks and
shelves hardware are properly installed.
Commissioning a SURPASS hiT7300 is the process of taking the installed NE's and
bringing them to an operational state. The commissioning tasks have to be performed
partially on site; in this case personnel must travel to NE site to perform the
necessary operations.
To perform the NE and Optical Link commissioning, TransNet provides a set of
NCF's and a commissioning report, at the end of the network planning. The NCF's
contain most of the necessary configurations for each NE of the planned network.
To install and commission SURPASS hiT7300, all necessary tasks have to be
performed in sequence. For each task, a separate document is provided:
For the Installation:
Interconnect, Cabling and Mechanical Assembly (ICMA);
Installation Test Manual (ITMN).
For NE Commissioning:
OLR and ONN Commissioning;
SON Commissioning.
For Optical Link Commissioning:
Optical Link Commissioning (OL).
Warning
Before commissioning procedures may be started, the following installation
tasks must be completed for each network element:

All equipment bays installed and grounded;

All sub-racks installed and grounded;
All fuses in the fuse panel have to be installed;
All DC power and ground connections complete;
All cards, and blank panels as required have been installed in the sub-racks;
All electrical cable connections (LAN, external alarm, etc.) complete for each subrack;

All optical cable connections complete.

SURPASS hiT7300 delivery variants

The three delivery formats are available, which differ regarding the pre-installed
Hardware (HW) and Software (SW). The SURPASS hiT7300 system is available in
the following delivery formats:

Rack and Shelf preconfiguration;

In the Rack and Shelf preconfiguration delivery format, the entire assembly work is
assured by Siemens in advance. In this case, all cards are plugged in the shelves
according to the customer List Of Material (LOM), and installed in the correct
racks. In addition, the main NE configuration parameters are set in the Local Craft
Terminal (LCT), and the required software is installed to the NE.

Shelf preconfiguration;
In the Shelf preconfiguration delivery format, all shelves are equipped with cards
according to the customer LOM. In this case, the required software is installed to
the NE, and the shelf identifier (ID) is the only configured parameter in the NE via
LCT.

Bulk.
The Bulk delivery format does not support any pre-configured parameters for the
NE's.

TIP
According to the purchased delivery format, the corresponding commissioning
strategy has to be selected.

Setting shelf ID

It is mandatory that the shelf ID number is correctly assigned according to TransNet

commissioning reports; no shelf ID modifications are possible after initial
configuration. The shelf that contains the NE controller card (CCEP/CCMP) is always
assigned to shelf ID "1" by NE software, so no another configuration is possible for
this shelf.
TIP
The shelf manufacturing number noted down during installation is required to
complete this procedure.
To set shelf ID, complete the following steps:
1. To open "Shelves - Config" window right-click on the NE bar in the "Module
View" window, and then select "Configuration > Shelves..." menu item.
2. The table displays the NE shelves with the corresponding shelf "Manufacturing
Number", and "Shelf ID" assigned by the NE controller card (from 1 to 128).
3. If in this NE more then one shelf is available select a shelf by matching the
Manufacturing number in the table with the shelf manufacturing number noted
down during installation.
4. According to the shelf manufacturing number enter the following settings:
"Assign Shelf ID [2...127]": shelf ID number (from 2-127);
"Location": shelf location (shelf location in rack).
5. Click "Apply" to confirm the settings.

TIP
Repeat steps 1 to 5 for all available shelves in the table.

Configuring external NTP server or NE time

NTP is used for time synchronization of the NE's. NTP servers can be configured in
NE's where DHCP server is enabled, and SON's. For the remaining NE's, the NTP
servers are configured automatically via DHCP, i.e., the permanent gateway NE is
used as the NTP server by the remaining NE's. If no NTP server is currently
available, the NE goes into a free-running mode, depending only on its internal clock.
To configure an NTP server, or NE time, complete one of the following tasks:
Configuring external NTP server.
1. To open "Network Time Protocol - Config" window right-click on the NE bar in
the "Module View", and then select the "Configuration > Network Time
Protocol..." menu item.
2. Select an available "Server Index" in the table, and enter the IP address of the
external NTP server in the "Server Address" field.
3. Click "Apply" to confirm all settings.

Configuring NE time.
The NE time can only be configured if there is no NTP server has been enabled.
Once an NTP server is configured, the NE time is automatically overridden.
1. To open "Network Element Time - Config" window right-click on the NE bar in
the "Module View" window, and then select the "Configuration > NE Time..."
menu item.
2. Set the NE time in the "Adjust NE Time to" area.
3. Click "Apply" to confirm all settings.

Overview of optical link commissioning

The link control is the core mechanism of the optical link. Most of the link control
functions are executed by the main controller card and the time-critical functions by
the Line Amplifier cards. The link control instances for each transmission direction
work independently of each other, therefore each transmission direction must be
commissioned separately.
Exchange of link control information between Network Elements (NE's) takes place
via the Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC); hence the link commissioning tasks can
only be completed after the OSC channel is functioning.
In an optical path, the segment from the booster of an Optical Network Node (ONN)
to the preamplifier of the next adjacent ONN constitutes an Optical Multiplex Section
(OMS), while the segment from the booster of an ONN-I/T to the preamplifier of the
next adjacent ONN-I/T constitutes a pre-emphasis section. The first ONN within an
OMS serves as the link master, transmitting all relevant link control information to the
downstream NE's in this OMS. An optical path may consist of more than one OMS.
TIP
The OMS sections function independently of each other, and hence they must be
started sequentially, in each transmission direction.
Prior to starting up an OMS, several link control-related parameters must be
configured at the corresponding NE's. Network Element Configuration Files (NCF)
provide automatic configuration for most of the settings although other settings such
as OSC trace must be manually configured.
TIP
At least one channel is required to start up an OMS.

3.2

Pre-emphasis schemes

A customer network is planned in TransNet based on one of the following

characteristics:

Maximum reach (all channels equipped with Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA);
Reduced reach with the possibility for later automation (all channels equipped with
VOA's);

Reduced reach with no automation (a mixture of channels equipped with VOA's

and channels equipped with fixed attenuators).

The link optimization method to use depends mainly on how the network was
planned in TransNet. In the current release, two pre-emphasis methods are offered
for link optimization:

3.2.1

Pre-calculated pre-emphasis with measurement

Pre-calculated pre-emphasis with measurement consists in adjusting the power

levels of all ONN-T/I channels to the TransNet pre-calculated values. Pre-calculated
pre-emphasis with measurement must be performed before link start-up and after
channel upgrade/channel downgrade operations at the transmitting ONN-T/I NE. An
external OSA is required for measuring the spectrum power levels at the LAx cards of
the transmitting ONN-T/I.
TransNet calculates the reference power values at the multiplexer input, based on
the End-of-Life (EOL) performance criteria. These values are specified in the
TransNet Commissioning Report.
During the commissioning phase, these power values are set by:

Using the appropriate attenuators/attenuation patch cords (for channels with fixed
attenuators);

or

Adjusting the VOA at the multiplexer input of the Tx ONN.

Once a power adjustment is performed at the Tx ONN, channels equipped with
VOA's are automatically adjusted, while those with fixed attenuators are manually
adjusted by the commissioning team.

3.2.2

Enhanced pre-emphasis (manual)

Once the link has been sequentially started, may need to be further optimized, via
enhanced pre-emphasis.
Enhanced pre-emphasis must be performed in the following cases:

The channel count in the pre-emphasis section equals 16, 23, 32 or 40 (i.e. delta
power between these channel counts should be less than 2 dB).

After upgrading several channels, the above channel count limit was exceeded
and more channels need to be upgraded.

External OSA's are required to measure the spectrum power at the transmitting and
the receiving ONN-T/I NE's. Measurement of the near-end and far-end spectrums
must be performed within a window of 5 minutes. Therefore a technician must be
stationed at each end terminal when executing this procedure, with the capability to
communicate the measured values. The OMS within this pre-emphasis section must
be in state "Running".
Enhanced pre-emphasis has the advantage that the penalty is reduced. It offers the
capability to have more than 15 channels in the system.

3.2.3

Which pre-emphasis scheme should be used?

The pre-emphasis scheme to use depends on how the network was planned in
Trans-Net. The following table shows the relation between the network goal and
which preemphasis to use.

44

Network goal

Pre-emphasis scheme

Maximum reach

Prior to link start-up, pre-calculated pre-emphasis with

measurement is required. After channel upgrades, pre-calculated
pre-emphasis is required while the channel count < 16. Once a
channel count of 16 is exceeded, enhanced pre-emphasis is
required. Channels require equipping with VOA's.

Reduced reach,
with future
automation

Pre-calculated pre-emphasis with measurement is required prior

to link start-up and after channel upgrade. Once a channel count
of 16 is exceeded, enhanced pre-emphasis is required. Channels
require equipping with VOA's.

Enhanced pre-emphasis (manual):

Enhanced pre-emphasis may be required for further optimization.
Enhanced pre-emphasis must be performed if the channel count
in the pre-emphasis section equals 16, 23, 32 or 40.
Enhanced pre-emphasis must be performed, if after upgrading several
channels, the above mentioned channel count limit was exceeded.
An external OSA is required for measuring the spectrum power levels
at the transmitting and the receiving ONN-T/I NE's.

Optical link commissioning strategy

A sequence of tasks must be executed when commissioning and optimizing an

optical link. Some of the link commissioning procedures, such as pre-calculated preemphasis with measurement must be executed on-site. To avoid excessive costs
associated with onsite commissioning, the order in which these procedures are
executed at each NE site must be carefully planned based on the available network
topology.
Optical link commissioning in a linear network.
The Optical link commissioning in a linear configuration, starts at one end of the link
and proceeds to the next adjacent ONN, until all OMS is started up.
If the channel count has not yet reached 16, 23, 32 or 40, enhanced pre-emphasis
can be delayed to a later time when the channel count has reached these limits, via
channel upgrades.
Optical link commissioning in a ring network.
To select an NE to start the optical link commissioning in a ring configuration, follow
this conditions:

No express channels are present at this NE.

This NE has the biggest number of add channels.
If condition #1 cannot be met, then this NE should have the least number of

express channels.
Once the NE is selected, the direction to proceed depends on which of the two
transmission directions (clockwise or counter-clockwise) results in the lesser number
of trips to the NE sites. NE's with both add/drop and express traffic must be visited
twice; the first time to adjust the available add/drop channel attenuators, the second
time to adjust the express attenuator, once the express channels from neighboring
links are running.
Optical link commissioning in a mesh network.
To select an NE to start the optical link commissioning in a mesh configuration, follow
this conditions:

This is a terminal (ONN-T), and has a new channel.

This NE has the most number of add channels.
This NE has the least number of express channels.
NE's with both add/drop and express traffic must be visited twice; the first time to
adjust the available add/drop channel attenuators, the second time to adjust the
express attenuator, once the express channels from neighboring links are running.

3.4.1

Verifying NE commissioning status

Each NE in the commissioned link need to be checked to ensure that the correct
NCF file has been downloaded and swapped successfully. This is indicated by the
value of the Commissioning Status parameter of the NE.
To verify the NE commissioning status, complete the following steps:
1. To open "Network Element - Config" window right-click in the "Module View"
on the Network Element bar and select "Configuration > NE Configuration..."
menu item.
2. The Commissioning Status parameter should have value "Commissioned"
mean that associated NCF file was loaded to the system and activated.

Verifying Network Time Protocol status

This procedure is optional, only applicable to NE's used as primary DHCP server. To
ensure the NTP is working in all NE's along the link, complete the following steps:
1. To open "Network Time Protocol - Config" window right-click on the Network
Element bar in the "Module View" of the LCT, and select "Configuration >
Network Time Protocol..." menu item.
2. Verify the NTP status. A "*" next to a given NTP entry indicates NTP is working
with the NTP server IP address shown. A "+" next to a given NTP entry indicates
the corresponding NTP server is used as a second or third source.
TIP
Repeat these steps for all NE's that are used as primary or secondary DHCP servers.

Verifying transponder settings

Prior to starting up the link for the first time, verify that patch cords are properly
connected between transponders and their associated multiplexer/demultiplexer
cards. For each transponder, ensure that The Line Out / Line In ports are connected
to the corresponding input / output port of the multiplexer with the correct attenuator,
as given in the TransNet cabling plan.
In addition, line side parameters of the transponders must be checked.
For I01T10G cards, execute the following steps:
1. To open "Line Traffic - Config" window, right-click on the I01T10G replica in the
"Module View", and select "Traffic > Optical Channel > Configuration..." menu
item.
2. Select the "Decision Optimization Enabled" check box and set the
"Supervision Mode" to "Automatic" in the "Snk" area.
3. In the "Src" area, verify that the "Laser State" field indicates "Enabled". If this
field indicates "Disabled", select the "Laser Enabled" check box to switch on the
laser and then click "Apply" button to confirm the settings.
For I04T2G5 cards, execute the following steps:
1. To open "Line Traffic - Config" window, right-click on the I04T2G5 replica in the
"Module View", and select " Traffic > Optical Channel > Line #1 >
Configuration..." menu item.
2. In the "Src" area, verify that the "Laser State" field indicates "Enabled". If this
field indicates "Disabled", select the "Laser Enabled" check box to switch on the
laser.
3. In the "Snk" area, set the "Supervision Mode" to "Automatic" from the pulldown menu and then click "Apply" button to confirm the settings.
TIP
Repeat these steps for all line ports of all transponder cards that have been planned
for the optical line commissioning.

Updating the channel count

Since the exact channel count is not automatically detected, it is recommended to set
this value at the transmitting ONN-T/I, prior to performing pre-calculated preemphasis with measurement (when the Link Status is Running) and enhanced preemphasis (manual).
TIP
The wrong channel count value leads to incorrect amplifier settings.
To update the channel count, complete the following steps:
1. To open "Traffic Config" window right-click on the LAxB card replica in the
"Module View" window and select "Traffic > Configuration..." menu item.
2. In the "Optical Link Control" tab, click the "Recalculate..." button. The "Link
Readjust" window is opened.
3. Enter the current channel count in the "Optimize Channel Count" field and then
click "Apply" to confirm the settings.

Performing pre-calculated pre-emphasis

Pre-calculated pre-emphasis with measurement consists in adjusting the power

levels of all ONN-T/I channels to the TransNet pre-calculated values.
An external OSA is required for measuring the spectrum power levels at the LAxBC
cards of the transmitting ONN-T/I. To perform pre-calculated pre-emphasis with
measurement connect an external OSA to "MonSo" port of the LAxBC card at the
beginning of the pre- emphasis section to be commissioned, as it shown in the sketch
below.
TIP
Check in the appendix of the Optical Link Commissioning "OLC" document for details
on selecting an OSA and measuring the spectrum power.

4. In the "Power Adjust" window, for each valid channel enter the measured power
values in the "Measured Power" column and then click on the "Calculate" button
to start the power adjustment.
TIP
The measured spectrum data can be loaded from a file, using the "Load" button.
Please ensure that the selected text file is correct, i.e. only text files with the correct
strings can be loaded.
5. The "Power Adjust - Result" window is opened, once calculation of the delta
power adjustment values is completed.
6. Read the calculated delta attenuation value for each channel, displayed in the
"Power Adjust Delta Attenuation" column and do one of the following:
7. For channels with fixed attenuators: if the delta attenuation values are outside the
range [-2.5 ... 2.5] dB, replace these attenuators at the "Mux-In" ports. Perform
another power adjustment by repeating steps 2 to 6, until this range is reached.
a) For channels with VOA's: if the delta attenuation values are outside the range
[- 0.6 dB ... 0.6 dB], perform another power adjustment by repeating steps 2 to
6, until this range is reached.
TIP
Steps 2 to 6 can be repeated up to five times, in order to reach the target power
range.

1. To open "Traffic Config" window right-click on the LAxB card replica in the
"Module View", and select "Traffic > Configuration..." menu item.
2. Prior to starting up the link, the Link Status should be in "Prestart" mode and all
line amplifiers should be switched off. To ensure this, in the "Optical Link
Control" tab click the "Shutdown" button.
3. A warning message window is opened. Click "Yes" to proceed with the
shutdown.
4. Verify that Link Status is "Prestart" on the "Traffic - Config" window.
5. To open "Link Startup" window click on the "Startup" button.
6. Enter the "Link Startup Channel Count" and click "OK" button.

Each line amplifier has to reach a certain level of stability, before the next amplifier in
line switches on. The Link Status changes to Startup as soon as the first booster
amplifier has completed its startup.
The start-up is successfully completed when the Link Status changes from Startup to
Running. The start-up may take several minutes to complete, depending on the
number of NE's in this OMS. If the Link Status does not change from Startup to
Running (e.g. change to Prestart), check if any communication or equipment alarms
are currently raised at this OMS.

Checking Interstage Loss

After the link start, additional post-configuration tasks will need to be performed to
optimize the link.
TIP
If the link is not currently in state running, the following procedures cannot be
executed. In this case, please first execute the pre-configuration and link start-up
procedures for the given link topology.
TIP
The Interstage Loss (ISL) must be checked at all LAx cards against values specified
in the TransNet Commissioning Report. The ISL must be read from the LCT GUI
while the link state is running.
WARNING
If corrective actions are required, the link must be first shut down for laser
safety purposes.
To check ISL complete the following steps:
1. To open "LAx - Config" window right-click on the LAx card replica in the
"Module View" window, and select "Card > Configuration..." menu item.
2. Check if the value displayed in the "Interstage Loss" field is within the
minimum/maximum values specified in the TransNet Commissioning report.
a) If the current ISL is less than the minimum ISL allowed, check if the correct
attenuation cable or DCM cards are being used and add padding fibers, if
necessary.
b) If the current ISL is higher than the maximum ISL allowed, clean all fiber
connectors at the LAx ports and reduce/remove the padding fiber, if
necessary.

Checking span loss

The span attenuation must be checked at the Rx ONN/OLR against the End-of-Life
(EOL) span attenuation values specified in the TransNet Commissioning Report. This
procedure applies to LAxPC and LAxIC cards.
TIP
The span attenuation must be read from the LCT GUI while the link state is
"Running".
To check the span losses complete the following steps:
1. To open "LAxxC - Config" window right-click on the LAxxC card replica in the
"Module View" window, and select "Card > Configuration..." menu item.
2. Read the "Span Attenuation" and "EOL Span Attenuation Threshold" values
and compare with the BOL span attenuation values listed in the TransNet
Commissioning Report.
a) If the current span attenuation value is within the EOL - BOL range, corrective
actions are not required for this LAxxC.
c) If the current span attenuation is less than the BOL span attenuation specified
in the TransNet Commissioning Report, add padding fiber to the LAxxC-Line2
port of the upstream site feeding into this LAxxC card.
d) If the current span attenuation exceeds the EOL span attenuation, clean all
fiber connectors between the upstream LAxxC "Out" (LAxBC/LAXIC) and the
downstream LAxxC "In" (LAxPC/LAxIC) ports.
WARNING
If corrective actions are required, the link must be first shut down for laser
safety purposes.

TIP
A Span Loss Low (SLL) alarm would be raised if the current span attenuation is less
than (EOL Span Attenuation Threshold - 10.0 dB).
TIP
A Span Loss High (SLH) alarm would be raised if the current span attenuation is
greater than (EOL Span Attenuation Threshold + 1.0 dB).

Performing enhanced pre-emphasis

Once the entire pre-emphasis section (ONN-T/I -> ONN-T/I) has been started, the
optical channels may need to be further optimized, via enhanced pre-emphasis.
Enhanced pre-emphasis must be performed if the channel count in the pre-emphasis
section equals 16, 23, 32, 40 or after upgrading several channels, the above
mentioned channel count limit was exceeded and more channels need to be
upgraded.
External OSA's are required to measure the spectrum power at the transmitting and
the receiving ONN-T/I NE's. Measurement of the near-end and far-end spectrums
must be performed within a window of 5 minutes. Therefore a technician must be
stationed at each end of the pre-emphasis section when executing this procedure,
with the capability to communicate the measured values. To perform enhanced preemphasis connect an external OSA to "MonSo" port of the LAxxC card at the
beginning and at the end of the pre- emphasis section to be commissioned, as it
shown in the sketch below.

TIP
The OMS within this pre-emphasis section must be in state "Running".

To perform enhanced pre-emphasis (manual), complete the following steps:

1. To open "Traffic Config" window right-click on the LAxB card replica in the
beginning of in the "Module View" and select "Traffic > Configuration..." menu
item.
2. To open "Power Pre-emphasis" window click "Power Pre-emphasis" button in
the "Optical Link Control" tab.

3. Read spectrum power level results of valid channels from the OSA screen in the
near-end and the far-end spectrums.
4. In the "Power Pre-emphasis" window, for each valid channel enter the
measured power values in the "Near End Tx" - > (transmitting ONN power
levels) and "Far End Rx" -> (receiving ONN power levels) columns.
TIP
The measured spectrum data can be loaded from a file, using the "Load" button.
Please ensure that the selected text file is correct, i.e. only text files with the correct
strings can be loaded.
5. Click on the "Calculate" button to start the pre-emphasis.
6. The "Power Pre-emphasis - Result" window is opened, when pre-emphasis is
completed. The Pre-emphasis Delta Attenuation values are displayed.
7. Read the calculated delta attenuation value for each channel, displayed in the
"Power Adjust Delta Attenuation" column and do one of the following:
a) For channels with fixed attenuators: if the delta attenuation values are outside
the range [-2.5 ... 2.5] dB, replace these attenuators at the "Mux-In" ports of
the transmitting ONN-T/I. Perform another power adjustment by repeating
steps 2 to7, until this range is reached.
e) For channels with VOA's: if the delta attenuation values are outside the range
[- 0.6 dB ... 0.6 dB], perform another power adjustment by repeating steps 2
to7, until this range is reached.
TIP
Steps 2 to 7 can be repeated up to five times, in order to reach the target power
range.

Adjusting drop channels

At the receiving ONN-T/I, the power level of each drop channel must be manually
adjusted, if the power level at the receiving transponder exceeds the range specified
in the TransNet Commissioning Report.
Verifying the power level
To verify the power level of the drop channels, complete the following steps:
1. To open "Line Traffic - Config" window of the transponder card at the receiving
(dropping) NE, right-click on the transponder card replica and select "Traffic >
Optical Channel > Configuration..." menu in case of I01T10G card, or "Traffic
> Optical Channel > Line #x -> Configuration..." menu item in case of I04T2G5
card.
2. Read the Optical Input Power value under the Optical Channel tab:
a) If the Optical Input Power value is within the range specified in the TransNet
Commissioning Report, the received power level of this transponder does not
need to be adjusted.
b) If the Optical Input Power value exceeds the range specified in the TransNet
Commissioning Report, received power level of this transponder has to be
adjusted.
Adjusting power level
To adjust the received power level of the transponder, complete the following steps:
3. If a fixed attenuator is connected to the demultiplexer for this channel, replace the
external attenuator at the corresponding demultiplexers output, such that the
received power level at the terminating transponder is in the range indicated by
the TransNet Commissioning Report.
4. If a VOA (O08VA card) is connected to the demultiplexer for this channel, rightclick on the port symbol of the corresponding O08VA card replica in the "Module
View" and select "Port Configuration..." menu item to open "Port Config"
window.
5. Adjust the Attenuation, such that the Optical Input Power value of the terminating
transponder is within the range specified in the TransNet Commissioning Report.

TIP
Repeat steps 1 to 5 for each drop channel remaining.
