Suffield Park Infant School

A S WILLS

Danum House, Overstrand, Norfolk

During the second week of the Spring

term 2015 the 90 Year One children at
Suffield Park Infant school in Cromer
had a fantastic opportunity to take part
in a drama and storytelling week.
It was led by Sam, an enthusiastic lady,
from an external company called
The One Day Theatre Company.
As a school, we believe in providing
all pupils with activities they can excel
in, and it was wonderful to see their

involvement in acting out the mystery in

the specifically written story Who Stole
Little Bo Peeps Sheep?
The children had, prior to this experience,
learnt some acting skills, during drama, in
their Literacy lessons, which involved rich
speaking and listening opportunities.
During the Theatre week our three Year
One classes learnt to tell their part of the
intriguing story in their sessions with Sam.

From The Editor

Well three weeks into sensible

eating, I hope you are all doing
as well if not better than I!
On Saturday 14th February, Jack
Valentine will visit NORFOLK.
If you do not know this gentleman
he knocks on your door after dark
and leaves a present on the step,
and when you open the door he
has vanished.
As a child this was an evening of
great excitement as with a front
& back door by the time the child
named on the present had opened
their gift & all had admired it, the
other door would be knocked on
and a bunch of screaming children
would dash through the house back
& forth until all had gifts.
But sometimes if the door was
opened too quickly a garden rake
could nearly fall on your head or
as a parcel was snatched off the
step it would be pulled away as
it was attached to a string.
My father would return to a house
full of over excited children and
although he came in soon after the
last present had been delivered he
never saw him or that is what he
told us!
I think this happens in a few other
counties but is not a nationally
known phnomema.

Without travelling too far you

can take your loved one out for
a surprise meal or for a night or
two away in a luxury hotel.
On the 17th February it is Shrove
Tuesday and pancakes are a must
but in moderation!
The 18th February is Ash Wednesday
what are you giving up for Lent?
May I wish all of our readers
A Happy Chinese New Year
on Thursday 19th February.
See Page 7 to read about
this Year of the Goat.

Enjoy Your Crab Tales

You may decide to give yourself a

break for Valentines day, or night,
as we have so many super pubs and
restaurants here in North Norfolk.

Dear Editor,

Geoff Smiths recollections, in the last issue

of the Crab Tales, of his last pilgrimage from
Peterborough to Cromer seem a little awry
putting in Cromer has not been 1 since 2005.
Last year at the Marrams Putting Green on
Runton Road the cost was not 3 but 2.50
and 2 for under-12s, as since 2008, as it
will be again from April when the Cromer
Putting team look forward to seeing old
and new putters and pitchers at both the
Marrams and The Meadow Pitch&Putt.

Dear Editor,

While in Morrisons supermarket on the evening

of the 13th of January, my dear wife and I
witnessed a lone eldery gentleman suddenly
keel over as if pole-axed and strike the floor
with some violence.
An ambulance was sent for and he was
gathered up and ferried to the Norwich
hospital still unconscious.
May I use the courtesy of your Letters Page
to wish him a speedy recovery, whoever he
is, and give a literary pat on the back to the
Paramedics.

Later that night in bed, not being in the first

flush of youth myself, I fell to brooding on
the incident and at one point wondered out
loud: What could have made that old-boy
faint like that?.
From beneath the duvet my dear wife offered
thise cynical observation: Perhaps it was
Morrisons prices.
Yours Faithfully
Philip Graham

Dear Editor,

Last April About With Friends launched

Clubs With Friends a programme centred
around helping youngsters with Special
Educational Needs to access mainstream
community activities.
Since its launch we have helped many young
people with learning disabilities etc. to become
involved with local clubs & groups, including
traditional Youth Clubs as well as specialist
groups like Drama Clubs.
We have also supported others in accessing
voluntary work and the project is continuing
and we have room to take on more youngsters.
Referrals can be made by the young person
themselves or by their families or any
professionals working with them.

To qualify, the person must be between 13 and
25years (inclusive), have Special Educational
Needs, and live in the North Norfolk area.
We can provide a tailored service to meet the
needs of the individual and will spend as much
time getting to know them as is necessary to
find an activity or club that suits them.
We can then continue to support them to access
that club and help them build the confidence
they need to access it independently.
Additionally we can provide young mentors
who act as role models.
Those who have been on the programme have
seen some of the following positive outcomes:
Being included in their local community
Attending youth club/activity
Family feel supported/ not alone
Widened social opportunities
More friends
Improved self confidence

Dear Editor,

However, the campaign is far from over, and

we are appealing to local businesses to set up
a standing order with the Cromer Skate Park.
Even as little as 5 or 10 per month would
help to keep the park thriving, and benefit
the community as a whole.
This years fundraising includes a Charity Ball
at Northrepps Cottage on 14th March & Phil
Weston of Wet Dog is raffling off a bespoke
specialist skateboard worth 266.50, which
was donated by a family from Sheffield who
have been regular visitors to Cromer for years.
They believed it would benefit Cromer to have
a skate park of its own. Gregg - the dad - built
the skateboard himself, and it is a thing of rare
beauty. To see the skateboard and buy a raffle
ticket visit Wet Dog surf shop on Tucker St.
As always, the campaign thanks all those who
have supported and continue to support the
campaign. Your input is always welcome.

Dear Philip,

I just wanted to let your readers know that

Mundesleys Ambulance First Responders
received 200 from the bucket collection
at The Christmas Eve Pageant.

By the early summer of 2015, Cromer will

have its own skate park on the Meadow.
Maverick, the company that is building the skate
park, has committed to a provisional start date
of 2nd March 2015, dependent upon prevailing
weather conditions and they expect the park to
be completed by June this year, and perhaps
even in time for the May bank holiday.
The Cromer Skate Park campaign reached its
fundraising target of 150,000 in September
last year but unfortunately, the building work
had to be put on hold until after the winter.
Nevertheless, in the meantime there was still
much to do to reduce the risk of further delays
to the realisation of a dream already several
years in the making.
To this end, the committee has been liaising with
developers, surveyors and the NNDC and has
been collecting various grants that, together
with private donations and the income from
countless fundraising initiatives, have made
the entire venture possible.

Dear Editor,

North Norfolk Chamber Opera is an amateur

performing group set up some 25 yrs. ago by
our President, Janet Bryant-Heron to perform
works seldom, if ever, seen in North Norfolk.
Our venues have included Sheringham Little
Theatre, Kelling Barn, The Maddermarket
Theatre and for many years now the Auden
Theatre, Greshams School in Holt.
We have put on an opera annually in the spring,
performing such works as:The Marriage of
Figaro, The Magic Flute & Don Giovanni
by Mozart, Die Fledermaus by Strauss,
Sister Angelica by Puccini, Albert Herring
by Britten, The Song in the Blickling Garden
by Davidson & many operettas & one act operas.
Our Autumn concerts have been both serious and
light-hearted including The Hills are Alive
with the Sound of Mozart and Opera and
Chips performed in a barn at a pub!
Our next production will be an English translation
of The Elixir of Love (LElisir dAmore) by
Gaetano Donizetti, nightly on 16th - 18th April
2015 at the Auden Theatre a fun Rom-Com
in which a lovelorn young man takes an Elixir
(actually only wine but he doesnt know that!)
in order to try and win his love.
We are a very small amateur group and new
members are always welcome; non-performing
as well as performing. Rehearsals are underway
but there is still time to join us for the forthcoming
production, in particular tenors and basses.
Rehearsals take place in the Loades Hall, Holt
on Monday evenings at 7:30pm.
If you would like to know more, please contact
Maggi Warren, Musical Director/Acting Chair

Continued From Front Page

The script was lively and engaging and the

children loved learning their lines/words
and adding actions to perform.
Music and singing was also involved and the
simple masks & props provided were endearing!
Many traditional characters were in the story
and familiar to the children. This acted as
stimuli for all children to come to school
dressed up as their favourite character
on the final day.
Each class spent about a day in total with Sam,
who through her fun & games and repetitive
techniques, encouraged them all to take part.

On the final day, the whole story came

together in the morning and we found
out who that naughty thief was!
The children then, so successfully, with great
enjoyment, ended their theatre experience, by
taking part in two afternoon performances
to a real audience of the invited and
very happy parents.
Thanks very much to John Neenan
for sending us this article and these
delightful photographs.

Overstrand
Boxing Day

First of all, our apologies to all of the brave

swimmers at the Boxing Day Swim..we lost
the original file to put in the last issue!
Boxing day was celebrated by 31 swimmers
plunging into the balmy North Sea just after
11.30am on December 26th.

The swimmers ages ranged from a very

brave ten year old accompanied by her
not so keen dad, to those just over forty!
Bill and Jenny Wallace as usual provided
the very welcome mulled wine to all the
hardy dippers and spectators.
There were over three hundred of them
which resulted in donations of over
360 towards the upkeep of the
Millennium Playgroup
of Overstrand.

Happy Chinese
New Year

From Sam & June

The Year Of
The Goat....
..starts Thursday 19th February 2015

The Longest Public Holiday in China

In 2015 most Chinese will be off work from
Weds February 18th (New Years Eve) to
Tues February 24th (the 6th day of the
Chinese New Year).
The 12 zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger,
Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat,
Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
In Chinese astrology, each year (starting from
Chinese New Year) is associated with a sign
of an animal, occurring in a 12-year cycle.
Those born in these years come under the sign
of the Goat : 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967,
1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027.

Their Lucky Colors are: brown, red & purple

and their Lucky Numbers are: 2 and 7.
Their Lucky Flowers are: carnation & primrose
People born in a year of the Goat are very serene
& calm. They tend to have fewer health problems.
They should get out and commune with the
great outdoors, have regular meals and keep
sleep & waking times consistent.
The Best Jobs or Career for Goats
Goats prefer to work in a team. Their best work
partners are Horses. They are not crazy about
status & power. Unless asked, they wont ever
volunteer for anything and act as leaders.
Good career choices for goats are pediatrician,
actor, daycare teacher, interior designer, florist,
hair stylist, musician, editor, illustrator, and art
history teacher.
Those born in a year of the Goat are generally
believed to be gentle mild-mannered, shy, stable,

sympathetic, amicable, and brimming with a

strong sense of kindheartedness and justice.
They have very delicate thoughts, strong
creativity and perseverance and acquire
professional skills well.
Although they look gentle on the surface, they
are tough on the inside, always insisting on
their own opinions in their minds.
They have strong inner resilience and
excellent defensive instincts.
Although they prefer to be in groups, they do
not want to be the center of attention.
They are reserved and quiet, most likely
because they like spending much time
in their thoughts.
Goats like to spend money on fashionable things
that give them a first class appearance.
Although goats enjoy spending money on the
finer things in life, they are not snobbish.

The Aldborough
Players Panto

A ghost tells them that there is treasure buried

in the grounds of the hall - this would save them
from rack and ruin. Their cook overhears and
rushes off to tell her brother, Moriarty, who
with a gang of sundry cronies, determines to
get to the treasure first.

I went along to Aldborough on Sunday the 1st

February to watch the rehearsals of this years
Panto: Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of
Aldborough - the Return of Black Shuck

The show begins with the best of baddies with

appropriate facial hair! With a great voice and
superb presence, he is obviously enjoying himself which encourages the audience to enjoy
themselves as he sets the scene.

This is Aldborough Players 22nd pantomime

(the first one was in 1993 and they have only
missed one year in all that time).
He will use the myth of Black Shuck to keep the
locals out of the way. The Herbs contact their
old friend Sherlock Holmes, who arrives with
Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson. Mrs H discovers
her old love in the person of the Herbs butler,
Roger and Holmes of course defeats Moriarty.
All is well. But are we sure of the happy ending?
...There could be a sting in the tale!

The Action centres around Sir Basil and Lady

Herb, residents of Aldborough Hall but now
sadly impoverished.

Photographs by
Bob Eke

Performances at 7.30pm from Wed. 4th to Sat.

7th February in Aldborough Community Centre.
Tickets available from Aldborough Post Office
and Spar shop (both on the Green).

New Start For Old

As usual, I went along to the end of our road

to watch the rehearsals of this years Panto
at the Mundesleys Coronation Hall where
the cry of New lamps for old will be heard
when the pantomime Aladdin hits the stage
between the 17th and 20th February.
This year the new for old situation is linked
directly with the producers of this yearly and
well attended event.
For the last 41 years the pantomime has been
organised by the Friends of Mundesley
Lifeboat but for 2015 the Friends
have stepped down and a group of
regulars have taken over.
The Mundesley pantomime is a immensely
popular production and often sells out very
quickly. This is due to the local content
and jokes aimed directly at some of
the great and good of the area.
This years Production is directed by Ian
Cashmore and the well known local
comedian Pat Nearny (above right)
takes on the roll of Widow Twanky.
As usual the cast is drawn from Mundesley and
the surrounding villages with a large hoard of
children being involved with the singing and
dancing in the chorus.

Tickets are on sale from Monday 2nd February

onwards and can be purchased from 10am to
1pm at the Corner House Caf in Mundesley.
6.50 for adults and 3.50 for under 12s.
Info : www.MundesleyPanto.co.uk
Proceeds will be distributed between three very
deserving local charities: The First Responders,
The Air Ambulance, and Together We Share,
a local fund set up in memory of Trevor Sizer
who was himself involved in the Mundesley
pantomime on many occasions.
As always, you are promised an
extremely entertaining evening
with songs, dancing, and lots
of audience participation.
Oh yes you are!
Above: Most of the cast
On Right: L-R Paul Reynolds
who plays Wishy Washy &
Nigel Holmes who wrote it.
See you there.

A Feast of Fun, Food, Art, Music & Heritage.

The Cliftonville Hotel in Cromer played host to

the launch of the 6th Crab & Lobster Festival
on January 15th.
Wheely Good Wheels Art Trail brings an array
of ships wheels to be decorated, they are made
from solid wood approx 24ins in diameter and
cost 60 each to sponsor.
Local shops, offices, schools, pubs, individuals,
businesses and groups are invited to sponsor a
wheel and work together with an artist, school
or individual to decorate it for display as part of
the Art Trail. It is a great way to attract interest
in your business, organisation or as an artist.
At least 15,000 copies of the leaflet will be
published and available all over the area.
The decorated wheels will be sold at the Grand
Charity Auction on Sunday August 30th with
the proceeds going to the Community Grant
Scheme, which, since 2010, has donated
over 33,000 to local charities.
The trail runs from Easter until August.

The contractors had been on site for nearly

a month and will be returning in the Spring
to colour the court green.
The MUGA is a tarmac sports court (37m
x 21m) with permanent Football goals and
Basketball rings for Open Access.

Full details of the locations of decorated wheels

will be published in the leaflet, guiding people
to discover them on display in businesses and
shops throughout Cromer & Sheringham.
If you are interested in to purchasing
one of the Wheels to decorate
please Email: wheeltrail@gmail.com.
The evening was presented by Tony Shipp
MBE, Cllr Hilary Cox and Noel Gant with
a presentation of awards and grants from
last year.
The Crab & Lobster Festival will commence
on Friday 15th May, with a concert in the
Pavilion Theatre through to evening of
Sunday 17th May.
There will be street entertainment in Cromer &
Sheringham with the main weekend site being
on Evington Lawns (Cromer boating Lake)
with various stalls, Cookery Theatre and music.
Dont forget The Food Trail with some cheeky
fun in the window displays around the town.

Netball posts and Tennis nets will be stored

in the locked storage area but are available
for Bookings Slots.
The facility also has floodlights that can be
used for just 2 per hour.

Its Better Than

Repairing Cars
Since the back end of last year Matt Boyer of
Boyers Body Shop has, as well as repairing
and servicing cars, taken on missiles as well.
I say as well, Matt has taken on the cleaning up,
painting and getting this 28 foot long missile as
well as the launcher, looking a million dollars.
I would guess that a million dollars is less than
the Ministry of Defence would have paid for such
an amazing bit of kit, back on 1964, when they
were first situated at RAF bases in Norfolk and
in Suffolk.
Known as the Mark two Bloodhound this
missile can besides flying at over Mach two,
can then blow up a complete squadron of jet
aircraft, flying in squadron format.
In the next couple of weeks, the missile will
be returned to the Neatishead Museum where
it will be sited for visitors to enjoy seeing and
being part of our defence history.

So the question one has to ask is how come
Boyers Body Shop end up repairing and
cleaning up a missile in Cromer?
A couple of years ago, while Matt was buying
some milk at Morrisons he started chatting to
Beth Condle, curator/manager of Neatishead
who then contacted Matt
and as a result the missile
was hauled to Cromer.
Asked about this rather
unusual job, Matt said:
I have enjoyed all the
work involved with it as
have many others working
on this job.
I have to say it looks a
great deal better than
when it arrived here
Would you do it again?
I asked.
Yes, we have all enjoyed
working on this missile

Goodnight
Campers

John C. the camp General Manager - a very tall

ex-copper - would come into the service area and,
obviously with toast in mind and, seemingly
oblivious to all the mess and dramas at his
feet, would always beg the question:
Have you got the butter, Mark?
Or, bearing in mind he was a Geordie: Have
yous got the bu-er, Maaark?. It was obviously
his priority, and every single day, and bang-on
the minute.

Have You Got The Butter, Mark?

Learning of the closure of Mundesley Holiday
Village - and its planned journey into the
world of posh - has saddened me along, no
doubt, with many of its long-time campers.
I had the undoubted joy of working a stint in
the service room, there, over the Christmas/
New Year break of 1989 / 90. My Stepson,
Will, and I were both looking for something
to tide us over the Festive period having just
moved back to this area and ahead of my
joining British Rail Traincrew in Norwich.
The vacancies were for 4 days over Christmas
itself and then a further 4 days spanning Old
Years Night and New Years Day. Will, who
had recently left boarding school, and wasnt
particularly people-savvy, was assigned a
post as a waiter while I was unceremoniously
despatched to the service room.

The waiting job needs no description - please

tell me it needs no description - while my work
entailed plating up the meal-of-the-hour, on a
production-line basis with half-a-dozen or so
colleagues, ready to be rushed into the dining
room by the frenetic waiting staff and dropped
in front of the bewildered punters.
The whole process was madness and seemed
to operate on a system of shouting, swearing,
spilling, scolding, more swearing and slipping
about on food-splashed floors; Health and
Safety had no place here.
The post meal emptying of the tables and the
dining room was even crazier, on the basis of
as soon as youd cleared everything you were
done for your shift. The batwing doors between
the service room & dining hall were supposed
to have an in-&-out system but for some strange
reason, in the heat of battle, most staff appeared
spontaneously entrance/egress dyslexic and
collisions at these pinch-points were manifold;
food skating could be added to your CV after
only one day of employment here.

Now began my main job - that of washing up

- we had a couple of machines but they were
more-or-less knackered and only served as a
pre-wash rinse; mostly the dirty crockery was
dropped - often (intentionally) along with halfeaten meals - straight into the slurry that was
the washing-up water.
You had to become pretty adept at poking mashed
potato, and trifle alike, through the grills of the
stainless steel sink plug holes; that being the
mashed potato & trifle that hadnt already been
smeared across each others face and hair.

12

I have already mentioned food-skating, havent I?

It has to be said that there was no point in trying
to be any different or better-behaved than anyone
else you worked alongside, to attempt to be would
have resulted in being ostracised or made an
object of derision so you just joined in.
The bon ami amongst workmates was quite special
- most came from a coloured and varied background - I mean, we were all transients or social
misfits in our own particular way - one mature
American guy being a US Army Draft Dodger
or, should I say, Vietnam War dodger.
He was a quiet, gentle soul and, like many of
his contemporaries, wasnt cut out for My Lai
or Da Nang or such places of battle; anymore,
maybe, than he was for the service room at
Mundesley Holiday Camp.
Who am I to judge?
I guess the most important task of any of our split
shifts (we would be stood down after each meal)
was to make sure we had our own personal meals
lined up - I say meals, plural, because we all
had voracious appetites.
We would stack these loaded platters in a corner
of one of the giant stainless steel hot cupboards
ready to scoff at the end of each appropriate shift.
Trifles, too, were one of our favourites and would
be on the menu as an alternative pudding most
evenings. These wouldnt be secreted in the
hot cupboards, however ...
After the days slog we staff would often meet
in the bar of the function/ballroom to recount
the events of the day and one night in particular
were alarmed to discover the Entertainments
Host & his wife assistant were no longer there...
It seems a true, Hi-de-Hi style bingo fiddle
had been uncovered - no joke!

Im thinking that all of you readers would know

the song Goodnight Campers?
What you may not know, however, is that it
contains the lines:
You must cheer up or youll soon be dead,
For Ive heard it said - Folks die in their bed.
This was a bad omen and had to be re-written as,
far too often, this was a self-fulfilling prophecy
- the excitement of the first evening would, sadly,
all too often see some poor soul despatched all
too soon. My wife and I would usually know
what the wailing sirens, racing by our house
along the Coast Road on a Summer Saturday
teatime, would signify.
The Service Room Manager was a great chap in
his late twenties by the name of Mark who would
turn a blind eye to all of the extra-culinary
activities but there was a strange ritual,
before breakfast started to be served,
each and every morning.

I returned to help at a few one-off evening functions

during the following February - one, at least,
being a Masonic Dinner-Dance; on sliding
open the door of one of the hot cupboard yes - several rancid, barely recognisable
breakfasts still awaited our attention...
Happy days, but sadly no more.
Micky Peters
Thank you Micky for your amusing memories.
The pictures here are from the Coastwatch
Museum in Mundesley....possibly before
your time there Micky.....!

The Satnav
by Pam Ayres

I have a little Satnav, It sits there in my car

A Satnav is a drivers friend,
it tells you where you are.
I have a little Satnav, Ive had it all my life
Its better than the normal ones,
My Satnav is my wife.
It gives me full instructions,
Especially how to drive
Its sixty miles an hour, it says,
Youre doing sixty five.
It tells me when to stop and start,
And when to use the brake
And tells me that its never ever,
Safe to overtake.
It tells me when a light is red,
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively,
Just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front,
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account,
It specifies my gear.
Im sure no other driver,
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car,
It still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling,
Each journeys pretty fraught
So why dont I exchange it,
And get a quieter sort?
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure Im properly fed
It washes all my shirts and things,
And keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages,
And my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then,
I could turn the bugger off.

All That I Am by Anna Funder

This is not a
novel, rather
the true but
possibly little
known story of
the thousands
of German
dissidents
of varying
political
persuasions
and levels of
society who,
in the 1930s
vehemently
opposed
Hitlers rise
to power.
Many were murdered by the Nazis, many
others arrested and imprisoned in the new
concentration camps such as Dachau.
The book focuses on a group who fled Germany
and sought refuge in London. There, with information smuggled out of Germany, they published
newsletters warning of the build up of Germanys
military capabilities and the continuing erosion
of civil liberties.
This exposed them to the constant threat of deportation back to Germany by a British government
desperate to maintain a political dialogue with
the Nazi regime.
Sadly, the group came to realise that they also
had a traitor in their midst, who, to save his/
her skin and curry favour with the Nazis
was feeding information back to Berlin.
Their activities had also attracted the close
attention of Nazi agents operating in London
and culminated in the murder of two of the
group in a particularly callous, vile way - a
heartbreaking breaking episode in the book.
The 18th century politician Edmund Burke wrote
that : The only thing necessary for the triumph
of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Well, these good men & women, did do something
-they stood up to be counted and many of them
paid with their lives. It did seem for twelve years
that evil had indeed triumphed but that does not
detract from what these brave people tried to do
and I, for one, admire and honour them for it.
This book is a chilling yet moving account
of a terrible period of history but a book
well worth reading.

I Was Asked......

.....by a funeral director to play my bagpipes at

a graveside service for a homeless man.
He had no family or friends, so the service was
to be at a paupers cemetery in the Nova Scotia
back country.
As I was not familiar with the backwoods,
I got lost and, being a typical man, I didnt
stop to ask for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the
funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse
was nowhere in sight. There were only the
diggers and crew left and they were eating
lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the
men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down
and the vault lid was already in place. I didnt
know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began

to gather around. I played out my heart & soul
for this man with no family & friends. I played
like never before for this homeless man.
And as I played Amazing Grace, the workers
began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept
together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head
was hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of
the workers say :
I never seen anything like that before, and Ive
been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.
Apparently, Im still lost....its a man thing.
When you have stopped laughing be sure to tell
this to others who would enjoy a good story.
Thanks to Russell Sparkes for this.

Your Wish Is My
Command,
O Master?

Written by Miranda Marshall

Director at Hayes + Storr
It is the pantomime season so I hope you will
allow me a little indulgence with the heading
of this article? Rather like the genie in the lamp,
trusts can come to the rescue and offer a sort
of legal magic in times of uncertainty.
The discretionary trust is a long-established form
of trust but is more useful than ever.
It allows someone (known as a Settlor) to
set up a trust with a whole list of potential
beneficiaries.
The trust can be created either by Will or during
a lifetime. The trustees must be chosen most
carefully (in the same way as I explained the
importance of choosing the right executors
in my last Legal Notes article).
Under a discretionary trust the trustees are given
total freedom as to how to benefit all, any or none
of the beneficiaries, equally or in any proportions
they see fit, as to income and/or capital.
The big question for them is how to carry out
the wishes of the Settlor, bearing in mind that
a discretionary trust must be just that,
i.e. totally discretionary.
The moment the Settlor gives fixed instructions
to the trustees then the discretionary nature of
the trust may be compromised.
The way that this is best dealt with is by a Letter
of Wishes, by which the Settlor gives non-binding
guidance to the trustees.
It also has advantages that it is a private document, can be written in non-legal English and
can be added to or altered by the Settlor whilst
they are alive and have capacity to do so.
Wherever possible, I encourage the Settlor to
have significant personal input into the content
and style of their Letter of Wishes.
I have prepared Letters of Wishes to accompany
both Will and lifetime trusts making all sorts of
wonderful and unusual wishes.
Such letters can prove especially helpful guidance
where a potential beneficiary has drug or alcohol
problems which monies paid out at the wrong
time might worsen.
A Letter can provide guidance so as to seek to
protect assets where divorce or financial immaturity is a risk. Usually however instructions are
straight-forward & state a wish to benefit children
having regard to benefits already received or
where there is a wide range of ages and the
younger beneficiaries should receive more
from the trust to achieve overall equality.

to do the best job possible and to make the right

decisions when the Settlor is no longer around
to say what they want.

Coastal Erosion Meeting

Medical Negligence

Richard Barr experienced clinical negligence solicitor

For more information and a fact sheet contact me on:
Overstrands Shoreline Coastal
management, part of their parish
council, has been active for ten
years and they arranged this
public meeting on Saturday
24th January.
Over fifty local people attended
the open meeting at Overstrand
village hall. The subject coastal
erosion, which is as certain as
Monday following Sunday, so
why was there nobody apparently
under the age of forty present!
(apologies if Ive misjudged
anybodys age)
This was the first time that our
present MP Norman Lamb and
three of the forthcoming General
elections local candidates were
together to take questions and
put forward their partys ideas
about funding for our coastal
defences against erosion.
Denise Burke for Labour and Ann
Steward for the Conservatives and
Michael Baker for UKIP were all
present but the Green Party
candidate was a no show!

After an introduction by Gordon

Partridge, the chairman, allowed
Mr. Lamb and each prospective
candidate five minutes to outline
their thoughts on the subject, then
take questions from the floor.
There were many concerns on the
dredging taking place further along
our coast, which was probably
affecting the sand moving away
from our cliff bases, agricultural
effects on the cliffs from above,
excess watering, heavy machinery
close to the cliff edge!
and many more.
But mainly the concern of the lack
of cohesive plans or understanding
from central government, plus a
query as to where the funds for
repair and restoration of all
coastal defences were!
MP Norman Lamb suggested that
the louder expressions of concern
were and raising of local funds,
the more the Government would
have to take notice and match
the locally raised funds.

.............were a car, this is the time I would be

thinking about trading it in for a newer model.
I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my
finish and my paint job is getting a little dull.
..... But that's not the worst of it.
My headlights are out of focus and it's
especially hard to see things up close.
My traction is not as graceful as it once was.
I slip and slide and skid and bump into things
even in the best of weather.
My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.
It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed.
My fuel rate burns inefficiently.
But here's the worst of it -Almost every time I sneeze, cough or
sputter, either my radiator leaks or
my exhaust backfires!
Thanks to David Thorne for this

Clubs & Hubs

NNDC Sports Clubs and Hubs project has

started to help more local people get into
sport with a variety of different activities
available for the over 50s.
Classes ranging from Belly Dancing to Badminton
are now available in community hubs across
North Norfolk and are a cost-effective way to
participate in and try a range of new activities.
The courses are available for the 50+ age group,
cost just 1 per session and can be joined at
any stage during a 10 week programme.
The project aims to build on the work NNDC
has already delivered through its successful
mobile gym service.
Emphasis will be placed on making these
activities self-supporting in the longer term,
something that has already been achieved
with a number of community gyms in
the district.
The second phase of the project will start
in February and will see sporting activities
delivered in local schools for
14 25 year olds.
Activities will include Street Dancing,
Martial Arts and Boxing.
To book any of the activities or for more
information, please visit:
www.northnorfolk.org/clubsandhubs
or contact Wyn Nurse
on 01263 516 305.

With the first taste of real winter being forecast

for the next few days, NNCs salt stocks for
treating roads are a healthy 15,000 tonnes enough for up to 50 standard gritting runs.
So far this winter a see-saw pattern of often windy
weather has kept the number of gritting runs
down, with only 20 by mid January.
Last winter (2013-14) was even milder - but
forecasters now expect cold weather to set in
over the weekend and through much of next
week, with a risk of sleet and snow showers.
Nick Tupper, NNCs Highways Maintenance
Manager, said drivers could well be facing road
conditions they had not encountered for nearly
two years. He urged them to allow more time
and take extra care.
Even roads on the treated network can become
icy. We try to get out early & have roads salted
before they can freeze, but weather conditions
can make timing of gritting runs very difficult.
Its pointless to put down salt during heavy rain,
but roads can freeze quickly when skies clear.
If gritters go out as soon as the rain stops, it
will take up to 3 hours to complete the run.
Theres always a chance that run-off from fields
will freeze, even on treated roads, and of course
many minor roads over 60% of the network in
fact are not on the priority gritting routes.
During cold snaps theres always the chance
that a shady corner will stay icy, & wet roads
can quickly turn to black ice in the evening.
Its a myth that snow wont settle on treated roads.
Heavy snow falling on a salted road causes a
rapid drop in road surface temperature.
Salt then becomes less effective at melting the
snow & ice, so even treated roads can become
snow covered. In time treated roads will clear
down to the asphalt again, but it often takes the
action of traffic - especially heavy vehicles
- to speed up the process.
In prolonged severe wintry weather, priority 3
roads are treated as resources allow. In snow,
the council can call upon 90 farmers to snow
plough local roads.

In addition there are over 1,800 grit bins

around the county that have been filled
by the County Council.
Salt supply: NNC has a long-term contract with
Salt Union to supply salt and maintain supplies
above a minimum level.
At the start of the season the stocks in Norfolk
are 17,180 tonnes, held in seven salt domes and
one 5,000 tonne strategic reserve (Swaffham).
This is sufficient for over 50 actions (at 15
grammes per square metre). There is a further
3,000 reserve held at Ellesmere Port, Lancs.
Salt Union are under contract to maintain the
in-county stocks above a minimum level of
7,665 tonnes about 24 actions.
The 2013/14 winter was exceptionally mild but
the wettest for over 100 years. There were 65
gritting actions, using 15,679 tonnes of salt.
Total cost (including fixed costs) was 3.5m.
Average cost per action was almost 54,000.
In contrast, 2012/13 was a record winter for
gritting actions. There were 159 altogether,
using over 41,000 tonnes of salt between
27th October and 4th April.
