MANLY SELECTIVE CAMPUS

2013 YEAR 9 SCIENCE DER ASSIGNMENT - ENERGY

Rationale:
The planet Earth flourishes with a rich variety and abundance of plant and animal life all of
which rely on the ultimate source of energy, the Sun. On Earth, atoms are recycled through
ecosystems to be used again and again in structural components of plants and animals.
As one population, humans have developed enormous energy requirements. The future of the
planet may be determined by what we do about our production and use of energy.
Part A
Electronically produce a Booklet that could be used to increase community awareness about
energy.
This booklet must contain information about ONE or more of:
Energy for life; Bioaccumulation; Recycling in Nature; Human Intervention: Energy Crisis,
Energy Sources and cover the specifications described below.
Specifics of the booklet:
4 x A4 pages in size
Must contain at least 1 line graph showing a trend line
Must contain at least 1 table of statistics
Must contain at least 1 table of written information
Must contain at least 1 flowchart
Can contain illustrations
Must contain at least 200-250 words of relevant information as text
Must use correct scientific terminology
Part B
Compose/construct 10 questions (with answers) using the information presented in the
booklet as specified below.
Questions:
Your questions must have ALL of the following specifications:
2 straightforward questions of low difficulty eg. Finding answers from text; use verbs
such as identify, state, recall.
3 questions of moderate difficulty eg. Trends from graphs; use verbs such as explain,
compare, design.
3 challenging questions (1 from each of the units in the chapter) eg. Conclusions from
information; use verbs such as evaluate, assess, analyse.
1 question that involves drawing a graph
1 question that fills in blanks or adds to a flowchart
Part C
Write a short informative article for a popular teenage magazine on the implications of the
energy crisis for human society and planet Earth.
