fter giving birth to the baby, Maia wrapped him in blankets and went to sleep. T

of his first day he stole some of his half-brother Apollo's cattle and invented
the lyre from a tortoise shell.
Jason Sprung, a 26-year-old comedian in Brooklyn, connected last year on the loc
ation-based dating app Tinder with a Tennessee woman who was visiting New York.

In ancient Roman religion and myth, Maia embodied the concept of growth,[11] as
her name was thought to be related to the comparative adjective maius, maior, "l
arger, greater." Originally, she may have been a homonym independent of the Gree
k Maia, whose myths she absorbed through the Hellenization of Latin literature a
nd culture.[12]
In an archaic Roman prayer,[13] Maia appears as an attribute of Vulcan, in an in
vocational list of male deities paired with female abstractions representing som
e aspect of their functionality. She was explicitly identified with Earth (Terra
, the Roman counterpart of Gaia) and the Good Goddess (Bona Dea) in at least one
tradition.[14] Her identity became theologically intertwined also with the godd
esses Fauna, Magna Mater ("Great Goddess", referring to the Roman form of Cybele
but also a cult title for Maia), Ops, Juno, and Carna, as discussed at some len
gth by the late antiquarian writer Macrobius.[15] This treatment was probably in
fluenced by the 1st-century BC scholar Varro, who tended to resolve a great numb
er of goddesses into one original "Terra."[16] The association with Juno, whose
Etruscan counterpart was Uni, is suggested again by the inscription Uni Mae on t
he Piacenza Liver.[17]
The month of May (Latin Maius) was supposedly named for Maia, though ancient ety
mologists also connected it to the maiores, "ancestors," again from the adjectiv
e maius, maior, meaning those who are "greater" in terms of generational precede
nce. On the first day of May, the Lares Praestites were honored as protectors of
the city,[18] and the flamen of Vulcan sacrificed a pregnant sow to Maia, a cus
tomary offering to an earth goddess[19] that reiterates the link between Vulcan
and Maia in the archaic prayer formula. In Roman myth, Mercury (Hermes), the son

of Maia, was the father of the twin Lares, a genealogy that sheds light on the
collocation of ceremonies on the May Kalends.[20] On May 15, the Ides, Mercury w
as honored as a patron of merchants and increaser of profit (through an etymolog
ical connection with merx, merces, "goods, merchandise"), another possible conne
ction with Maia his mother as a goddess who promoted growth.[21]

Even those who have already made in-person connections sometimes prefer the secu

time between Manhattan and Las Vegas, recalled a frustrating dialogue with a man
who kept asking her to hang out via text, then backed off whenever they set a t

ht. Dr. Negash has worked on five not-yet-published studies examining the role o
f pornography in college students f lives. She found that the consumption of it re
sulted in lower gsupport seeking, h she said, meaning it made them less likely to l
ook for friendships and romantic relationships. In addition, people who believe
that relationships take effort reported that they were more likely to watch it.
Therefore, young men, especially, who have become chronic viewers of easily acce
ssible pornography may be less inclined to explore the more challenging terrain
4of three-dimensional partners.
