Release 5.2 Enhancements

SACS RELEASE 5.2 OVERVIEW


With the release of version 5, the SACS system was redeveloped for the Windows
environment. Release 5.1 concentrated on improving the usability and efficiency of the
system by providing a new more recognizable interface, giving new selection
capabilities, more file naming flexibility, improved project features and elimination of
ancillary input files. Release 5.2 concentrates on the addition of new technical features
such as 1) the introduction of a new six degree of freedom solid element, 2) code
checking now includes the latest NORSOK standard N-004 from October 2004, 3) input
loading features on regions of members and plates, 4) corrugated plate implementation
where a small but significant bending stiffness is included in the corrugation direction, 5)
the LAUNCH, FLOTATION and MOTION modules have been updated to include
surface weights, footprint weights, joint concentrated weights, member concentrated and
distributed weights, and non-structural weights, 6) the GAP module has been modified to
produce load deflection characteristic plots for user defined load deflection gap elements,
7) the EXECUTIVE has been enhanced to run SEASTATE prior to a TOW analysis to
include wind loads for a transportation analysis automatically, 8) the WAVE RESPONSE
module has been updated to automatically accept Global Load Analysis Input for
compliant tower analysis, 9) the generation of Transfer Functions for transportation
fatigue has been automated in line with a standard fatigue analysis through the use of the
GNTRF input data line, 10) the SACS STATIC II Pro (Professional Static Topsides
Package) has been enhanced to compute wind and gravity loads, 11) the nonlinear
COLLAPSE module now has ship impact functionality allowing the user to specify an
energy limit for a load sequence.
In addition, a new security key update allows the use of USB ports and is compatible
with Windows 2003 Server.

System Updates
The following is an overview of the changes made to the SACS system.

System Interface
Release
A new security key update allows the use of USB ports and is compatible with
Windows 2003 Server.

Interactive Programs
Release
Improved upon the 3D model viewer by including all new features from the
underlying internal model.
Created an internal/external interface to the SACS export routines SACS/ANSYS
and SACS/DXF.
Thoroughly integrated weight features into PrecedePro.

General System Enhancements


Release
Recompiled all batch modules with a new compiler. This will mean slight
discrepancies in results, particularly in iterative solutions. Floating point
arithmetic has been enhanced with the new compiler. This may affect results
obtained in COLLAPSE, FLOTATION/UPENDING, GAP, LARGE
DEFLECTION, FLOTATION/UPENDING, LAUNCH and PSI.
Added weight features to MOTION/STABILITY, LAUNCH and
FLOTATION/UPENDING.
Added new six degree of freedom solid elements and new joint ordering features
for solid elements.
Code checking now includes the latest NORSOK standard N-004 from October
2004.
Updated corrugated plate implementation where a small but significant bending
stiffness is included in the corrugation direction.
Modified the GAP module to produce load/deflection characteristic plots for
user-defined load/deflection gap elements.
Updated the WAVE RESPONSE module to automatically accept GLOBAL

Each of the SACS programs has been enhanced and improved for Release 6.0. Many of
the program modules have been further enhanced in Service Packs 1, 2 and 3. The
following pages detail enhancements and corrections incorporated in Service Packs 1, 2

Added the ability to model a pressure footprint, that is, a weight footprint without
skid beams, as mass.
Release Corrections
Program now correctly ignores the grouted volume between tubulars when
computing entrapped water weight.

Executive
Release Enhancements
Program now allows execution of Seastate prior to Tow so the transportation
wind load can be generated as part of the Tow run.
Program now allows use of a Post input file when running post-processing as part
of any static analysis, including linear, tow, etc.
Program now allows use of a Post input file whenever element post-processing is
performed.
Added a format superelement function.
Added linear wave diffraction capabilities.
Supports all the new codes available in Post.
Added the ability to run wave time history with force time history and wind time
history.
Supports dynamic blast capabilities.
Release Corrections
Program correctly executes when a PSI input file is specified in the run file
wizard, soil data or pile capacity is plotted, then the PSI analysis is run again.
Corrected analysis options filtering for linear static analysis so that only
appropriate options are available.

Fatigue
Release Enhancements
Automated the generation of transfer functions for transportation fatigue in line
with a standard fatigue analysis through the use of the GNTRF input data line.
Release Corrections
Eliminated an incompatibility between Fatigue and Interactive Fatigue for wave
spectral analysis.

Flotation/Upending
Release Enhancements
Added the common weight features from Seastate to the Flotation module.

Gap
Release Enhancements
Added the capability to plot force-deflection gap elements.
The number of gap elements is now theoretically unlimited. Practical limitations
such as run time may be the limiting factor.

SACS

Added the specification of an initial gap in a tension/compression gap element


on lines 51-55 of the MEMB2 line.

Interactive Fatigue
Release Corrections
Eliminated an incompatibility between Fatigue and Interactive Fatigue for wave
spectral analysis.
Eliminated a problem where particular inline connections at a joint caused an
abnormal exit in TDAMG.

Joint Can
Release Enhancements
The October 2004 revisions to the NORSOK code have been implemented.
Release Corrections
Corrected problem with abnormal program termination when connection
consisted of small and large tubulars.

Launch
Release Enhancements
The LCFAC line is now implemented in Launch.
Weights have been implemented in Launch load input.

Motion/Stability
Release Enhancements
Added the common weight features from Seastate to the Motion module.
Release Corrections
Corrected input problem where program does not find the vessel in the library if
the name was right justified.
Corrected program crashing when compartment boundaries on the compartment
definition line are input in backwards order.

Pile/Pile3D
Release Enhancements
Added an output report to Pile3D for pile loads at depth.

Precede
Release Enhancements
Added the ignore option to member wind loading.
Implemented the following new data types: master/slave joints (MASTER), roll
center location (CENTER), dynamic mass selection (DYNMAS), elevation data
(ELEV), exclude group data (EXCGRP), surface identifiers (SURFID), surface
definitions (SURFDR), surface weight (SURFWT), footprint weight (WGTFP
and WGTFP2), non-structural joint weight (WGTJT), distributed member weight
(WGTMEM), concentrated member weight (WGTMEM), non-structural weight
(WGTNS and WGTNS2), weight combinations (WTCMB), weight selection
(INCWGT), acceleration (ACCEL), motion (MOTION), space forces (SFRC),
space moments (SMOM), response amplitude operators (RAO), RAO data
inclusion, (INCRAO), moving load case selection (MOVLOD), moving load
group selection (MOVGRP), and moving load steps (MOVSTP).

SACS

Release 5.2 Enhancements

Added the capability to define a set of members to have offsets to top or bottom
of steel.
The default value of Poissons ratio for plates, shells and solids has been set to
0.30.

Release Corrections
Density values on MEMBER, GRUP, MEMOV and GRPOV lines are now
output in scientific notation when values are less than 0.001.
Corrected problem with interpretation of CRG plate stiffeners in the model
checker.
Corrected the computation for the center of force when summing forces if a
distributed member load is defined starting at joint B rather than joint A.
Corrected error in count of member groups when groups are segmented.
Extended the number of joints extracted from KEEP lines to a maximum of 20.
Corrected problem with second member joint in member loads when joints are
reordered.
Corrected error in display of a chosen cross section library file under the
File/Settings menu item.
Corrected error in the deletion of joint weights.
Revised Danish code check option DC to 1998 Danish and added D1 as 1983
Danish code check.

PSI (Pile/Structure Interaction)


Release Corrections
Corrected problem with tensile pile head axial load used to create pile head
superelement when the pile penetration is shallow or the tensile capacity is low.
Corrected problem with results when model has PERSET joint deflection.

SACS IV
Release Enhancements
Added support for new six degree of freedom solid elements.
Library cross sections are now allowed to have blank input fields, in which case
the program will compute the field properties (area, moments of inertia, centroid
values) based on cross section dimensions supplied.
The OPTIONS line has added support of the MSL method for calculating joint
flexibility.
Implemented a novel solid checker with and without solid joint ordering for all
solids.
Flexural-torsional buckling for T sections has been added for both the AISC
WSD and LRFD.
The hydrostatic pressure due to the wave crest is included for flooded and nonflooded stiffened cylinder. Flooded members should see the incremental increase
in pressure below the waterline due to the hyperbolic decay function.
The hoop buckling unity check is now reported in the unity check report when it
is the critical condition.
Formula F4-2 for box section shear is now utilized in computing shear allowable
for slender sections; default transverse stiffener spacing is taken from columns
66-69 of the GRUP line.

Created a minimum fillet radius for channel section, equal to one fourth the
minimum of the web thickness and flange thickness.
Corrected problem with the AISC hydrostatic check being always computed
using the WSD method, rather than using the LRFD code when LR is
specified on the OPTIONS line.
Corrected reporting of solid groups.
Corrected problem with master/slave degrees of freedom.
Corrected problems with shell stress unity check range summary and shell stress
group summary.
Corrected problem with solid groups not appearing in solid stress group
summary.
The stiffener spacing of double web plate girders was ignored when calculating
shear stress.
Corrected problem with program crashing when channel section fillet radius was
not supplied.
Corrected problem of infinite unity check creation in specific cases of box
sections.
Corrected units and value output problem in Member Group Summary report.
Corrected problem with hydrostatic unity check calculation in the Danish code
when geometry had very short cylinders.
