Teacing and learning experience

As a teacher, it is normal to face problem in our teaching and learning especially

subject such as English. For my practicum, I went to two different schools which are
SJK (T) Ladang Senawang and SJK(T) Lorong Jawa. I have faced different problem
at different school.
When I was in SJK(T) Ladang Senawang, the pupils are really weak in
English. They are not proficient in English language and it has been a tough time for
me. This school located in an estate area but it is second best school in Seremban
2013 for UPSR result. In this school I taught four different classes which consist of
two classes for both standards. The year 3 pupils were really weak in English and it
can be seen clearly when they did not able to respond to the teacher. Most of them
do not understand simple words such as money, buy, soft and so on. I believe the
problem is more on lack of vocabulary. For my year four pupils, they are weak at
grammar item. They cannot differentiate between proper noun and common noun.
They will always write proper noun start with small letter. When I asked them to write
sentences, they will write name starts with small letter.
In SJK(T) Lorong jawa, I have faced a different problem. This school is an
urban school that located in the middle of Seremban town. It is a two session school
and I was in the evening session. I was required to teach year two and three. The
pupils can speak and respond in English with limited vocabulary. I still managed to
understand what the messages that they try to convey are.
For my year two pupils, they can understand all my instructions very well but
they are really active in class that sometimes I could not control them. Some of the
pupils having problems in answering question and I need to make it as simplest as I
can in order to make them speak. My year three class was a challenge for me
because it is the last class and the weakest pupils according to the teacher. In this
class, I always used simple English because most of them are not proficient. They
always had a tough time if I ask them to write a simple sentence. This is due to lack
of vocabulary. They will start to ask the words that they do not know in English by
using their mother tongue which I am not familiar with.

However, during both teaching and learning experience, I realised that they
have a problem which is possessive pronouns. This problem is the major problem
that I can see from all the classes that I have taught before. They made the same
mistakes over and over again. They do not know what is the meaning of s after a
word. For example, Alis book. Besides that, they do not know how to use possessive
pronouns such as mine, yours, ours and so on. When I asked them Whose book is
this? and they will reply either me or I. I believe this happened because they are
not exposed to possessive pronouns. Their teacher did not really explain to them the
function of s and possessive nouns. The teachers are not able to find an
interesting way to teach them possessive pronouns. So, I will try my best to come up
with an interesting way to teach this possessive pronoun.
