System Requirements:

Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 or higher

Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher
Minimum 128 MB RAM
Minimum 256 MB archiving file
Minimum 2 GB hard disk space
(35 MB database software,1.5 GB SAP data, temporary space for the installation)
The file ...\system32\...\etc\services must not contain an entry for port 3600 (you can
deactivate any such entry by inserting the character '#').

To install and use the system, you have to log on to your PC as administrator. The entire installation
takes between thirty minutes and one hour, depending on the performance of your computer.

Preliminary Remark
The Mini SAP Basis System is shipped as two CDs. The first CD contains the files for the kernel and
Frontend (SAP GUI). The second CD contains the compressed contents of the SAP database.
Installation of the components of the SAP System is a two-step procedure. The first step is to install
the application server and database system, including database data. The second step is to install the
SAP GUI (Frontend). The latter is only required if still no SAP GUI Release 4.6D is installed on your
PC.
The installation is mostly self explanatory and proceeds as follows:
After you have inserted CD 1 into the drive of your computer, a HTML file is opened automatically. This
HTML file gives you a summary of the installation guidelines and includes links to additional
information. If this does not happen, open the file <CD-Drive>:\mini.htm in the root directory of
CD 1.
This HTML file offers you three options of installing the system:

Start Installation
This starts the installation of the application server and the database. Alternatively, you can also
execute the file <CD-Drive>:\setup.bat.

Resume Installation
If the installation procedure was stopped for whatever reason, you can choose Resume
Installation, or alternatively you can execute the file <CD-Drive>:\resume_setup.bat.

Install Frontend
This starts the installation of the SAP GUI. Alternatively, you can execute the file <CDDrive>:\minigui\setup.exe.

If you choose to execute the installation using the HTML file options, a dialog box appears. Choose
Run this program from its current location.

Installing the Application Server and the Database

1. Start the installation by choosing Start Installation from the HTML display, or by executing file
<CD-Drive>:\setup.bat
2. First, the Microsoft SQL Server is configured. If any problems arise during the configuration, use
the Control Panel to delete any installation of the SQL Server that may exist, and start the
installation again. Reboot your PC if asked to do so after a successful configuration, and continue
after the restart by choosing Resume Installation from the HTML display, or by executing file
<CD-Drive>:\resume_setup.bat.
3. The initial screen of the SAP installation then appears:

Enter a target directory for the Mini SAP Basis System and database data, and choose Next.
4. You then have to confirm the path for the CDs:

You usually have to just choose Next.

5. The following dialog box requests you to insert the data CD into the drive:

Insert the CD and choose Next. The following step may take a while to complete. Do not interrupt
this step: wait until the installation has finished.
6. Complete the installation by choosing Exit from the last graphic.

After completing the installation of the application server and database, an icon appears on your
desktop with the text Start SAP MBS, which you can use to start the SAP System. The new program
group Mini SAP contains all other calls. You must only deinstall the SAP System by using the routines
provided in this program group.

Installing the SAP GUI (Frontend)

If you still have not installed SAP GUI Release 4.6D on your PC, you can do so now using CD 1. If you
already have an older SAP GUI version installed on your PC, we recommend that you deinstall this
first and then reboot your PC.
1. Start the installation by choosing Install Frontend from the HTML display, or by executing file
<CD-Drive>:\minigui\setup.exe. The rest of the procedure occurs automatically and
installs all components that are required for the test system operation.
2. After completing the installation, reboot your PC for security measures. You now see a new icon
with the text SAPLogon on your desktop.

Starting the SAP System

To be able to work with the SAP System, you have to start it before calling the SAPLogon by using
the Start SAP MBS icon on the desktop. The Start SAP MBS program appears in the taskbar: when
maximized, it displays the status of the SAP System:

You can stop the SAP System by closing the DOS window.

Configuring the SAPLogon and Calling the SAP GUI

Before you can access your SAP System, you have to perform the one-time step of configuring a new
entry in the SAPLogon:
1. Start SAPLogon
2. Choose New ...:

3. Complete the fields in following window, as shown:

The Description can be anything of your choice.

For Application Server, enter the name of your host, which can be found by looking under Start
Settings Control Panel System Environment and reading the value of the HOSTNAME
variable.
Enter 00 as the System Number, as shown above.
The new entry should then be visible in the SAPLogon screen (in this case, MBS). You can use this
entry to start the SAP GUI and log on to your SAP System.

Logging on to an SAP System

On the logon screen, you can log on using the usernames and passwords that are specified there:

Normal logon occurs using BCUSER. BCUSER is already registered as developer for the Mini Basis
System. You can use the DDIC user to log on as an administrator.
Note that when you call a program for the very first time, the system first has to compile all of its
components, meaning that it takes a while initially for the corresponding screens to appear.

Generating Example Data

When you call the Object Navigator of the ABAP Workbench (transaction SE80), you can see the
example programs of the book, and you can execute the S_FLIGHT_MODEL_DATA_GENERATOR
program, for example, to fill the exercise databases:

Linking to Basis Documentation in the SAP Library

The part of the SAP Library that concerns Basis is located on CD 1, in English and in HTML Help
format (for direct access: <CD-Drive>:\HTMLHelp\Helpdata\En\00000001.chm). In the Mini
Basis System, the default drive name is 'D', meaning that this is the drive that is searched if you
choose Help Application Help. To change this, call transaction SR13 in the SAP System, confirm
the dialog box for client independence, and change the drive name on the corresponding tab page:

You can also copy the help files onto your hard disk and adjust the above entry correspondingly.
When you save your entry, you are prompted to specify or create a Workbench request. Choose
Create.

Enter a short description.

Save your entry, and confirm the next dialog box by choosing Enter. This saves the modified access
path.
