Instructor's Statement:
Course Content
Psychology is the study of people and so covers a very broad range of topics.
PSYC 1001 will examine psychology as a natural science. We will explore the
role of the environment and biology on humans and the techniques and
models used to study the psyche.
Learning Goals
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Identify and discuss the major themes and research areas that make up
the field of psychology
Distinguish among basic psychological theories and perspectives.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the types of questions
psychologists ask and how they find the answers.
Think critically about key ideas and research findings in psychology.

the final grade. It will cover Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the text and the
accompanying lecture material including films, videos, etc. Please note:
This exam is scheduled during regular class time.

Exam #2: Friday, March 13th from 8:35 a.m. 11:25 a.m. This midterm
will consist of a series of multiple-choice questions, worth 30% of the final
grade. It will cover Chapters 4, 5, and 6 plus the accompanying lecture
material. Please note: This exam is scheduled during regular class
time.

If you must miss a midterm exam due to illness or bereavement, obtain the
appropriate documentation and contact Elaine Waddington Lamont
immediately (within 24 hours) to arrange a make up exam. Make up exams
must be written within 7 days of the original exam date.

Final Exam: The final exam will be 3 hours, and worth 50% of the final grade.
It will be comprised of a series of multiple-choice questions, and will survey all
of the material covered in the course: Chapters 1- 8, and the accompanying
lecture material. Our final exam will occur during the Exam Period from April
11th 23rd. The exact date & time are determined by the Exam Scheduling
Office. I will announce the date, time & location as soon as possible.
If you miss the final exam, you must apply to write a deferred exam (with
appropriate documentation) to the Registrars Office within the time period
specified in the current Undergraduate Calendar.

All materials from the lectures (including videos) and all assigned textbook
chapters will be examined using a multiple-choice question format. Answers for
the multiple-choice questions will be marked on Scantron sheets, so you will
need to bring a dark lead pencil (e.g., HB 2) and a soft eraser. You must bring
your student identification card to each exam.
Course Requirements:
Students must complete all three exams (2 midterms and one final) to complete
the requirements of this course. Students who do not write both midterms will not
be able to write the final exam.
Grade-raising Options
All students in PSYC 1001 and PSYC 1002 have the opportunity to increase their
final grade by electing to participate in psychological research conducted by
Psychology faculty, or by graduate students under the supervision of members of
the Department. This option will provide you with some first-hand experience
within the field of experimental psychology. Another option for raising your grade
is to write up to 2 synopses of research published in an academic journal. The
maximum grade-raise per course is 4%. Details on these options are available on
the departmental research participation page: Participating in Psychological
