Seattle Universitys Welcome Week 2013

Welcome New Redhawks!

We are excited to have you join our academic community. This Welcome Week
schedule highlights activities that will help you succeed at SU. All first-year students are
expected to attend the activities. There are many people here to help you, just ask your
OAs, RAs, Peer Mentors, Collegia staff, faculty, and staff questions as needed. Have
fun Class of 2017!

Saturday, September 21st


9:00am-3:00pm Student Health Center Open (Bellarmine first floor)
Stop by and update your immunization records and complete any missing vaccines.

10:00am-3:00pm Student Financial Services Open (University Services Building)


10:00am-4:00pm Campus Store Open (University Services Building)
1:00pm Financial Aid and Paying Your Bill (Pigott 103)

This is an opportunity to talk with Student Financial Services staff about the ins and
outs of reading the students online invoice, payment options, parent access to
student information and what happens in this quarter and future quarters in terms of
continuing to receive financial aid.
2:30pm -5:00pm Commuters (Lynn Collegium)
Come to your campus home away from home to pick up your Welcome Week
materials, reconnect with peer mentors, other new commuters, and enroll in the
Collegium for the school year.

Combining the art of dance with drama, this event is not to be missed. Starring your
OAs as center stage superstars, they'll have you laughing and learning about the renowned

Join your floor or collegium for SUs puzzling & exciting rapid scavenger hunt. This
fast paced team race will test your knowledge and quirky skills for points and prizes.

The Department of Public Safety will engage you in a short, interactive discussion
covering practical tips for living in an urban environment. This session will assist
you in making your new home at Seattle University enjoyable and secure.

Encounter the city that will be a dynamic part of your life! OAs will
show their small groups fun places to explore. Pick up your lunch and

The real life funny sort-of-improv show about sex and stuff. This show is required

7:00pm Student Reflections on Spirituality (Student Center 160)
Students from a variety of faith and spiritual perspectives will speak about the
religious and spiritual context at SU. Hear about the ways that you can explore or
deepen your own or spirituality and learn about others through community service,
retreats, prayer, social justice education, interfaith dialogue, and meaningful
reflection opportunities. All are encouraged to attend. Sponsored by Campus Ministry.

All students are welcome for this celebration of the Catholic Mass. Fr. Mike Bayard,
S.J., presiding and Matthew Pyrc, S.J. preaching.

Monday, September 23rd


9:30am New Student Academic Convocation
(Connolly Complex, North Court)

The President, Provost, deans, and faculty welcome you to


the opening academic event of the year! A panel of speakers
will then address issues raised in your common reading, The
Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains. The panel of
speakers will be Chris Paul, Associate Professor of Communication; Michael
Spinetta, Assistant Professor of Psychology; Jeff Philpott, Director of the University
Core Curriculum and Assistant Professor of Communication; and Haley Weit, SU
student majoring in Strategic Communication. Dress appropriately business causal
and bring your book.
11:45am Faculty Discussion Groups (Pick up lunch in the PACCAR Atrium,
Pigott Building, then report to your small group meeting room.)
Meet with members of the faculty to discuss the keynote addresses and other
aspects of academic life at Seattle U. Dont forget your book!

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to demonstrate a level of
proficiency in a foreign language. Students who wish to be placed in a foreign language
course above the 115 (beginning) level should take a placement test.

This orientation session is for all freshmen involved in the Faith
and the Great Ideas Learning Community. Dinner will be served, and you will have the
opportunity to meet faculty who teach our linked courses as well as other Faith and the
Great Ideas students and mentors.

6:30pm Will Keim, Welcome to the Time of Your Life!

Curious about what your college journey has in store? Dr. Will Keim is
your guy! An annual favorite at SUs Welcome Week, he will have you on
the edge of your seat wanting to know more. Dont miss him!

7:00pm-9:00pm Instrumental Auditions for Chamber Music/Ensemble Courses


(Hunthausen 060 (In the basement))
Come participate in the Chamber Music and Ensemble class! There are two sections of
Chamber Music (Advanced, which meets MTR 6-8pm and Beginner/Intermediate W 68) with which students can perform and participate in small ensemble music groups.
Come audition by playing a piece or scale of your choice. All students who play
instruments are welcomed. There is a signup sheet for audition times in Hunthausen 021.

Study abroad prepares leaders in an increasingly interdependent world. Start planning

All incoming student-athletes (freshmen and transfers) are required to attend this
session. Student-athletes will be introduced to athletics staff members, review the

Interested in a career in the health professions and want to learn about the resources
that are available to you? Please join Rebecca Pazdral, Academic and Pre-Health
Advising Supervisor, and students from the Pre-Health Club to learn about academic
and career planning resources for students interested in a variety of health professions
fields including medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, physicians
assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy and others!

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer, Questioning, and Ally communities. Well

Get ready to show your SU spirit!! Learn what REDZONE is all
about, meet other members, get to know athletics, and learn our
fight song featuring some of the best spirit folk on campus! We
will also be giving out some sweet Seattle U swag to the first 100
students and there will be a photo booth to capture your Redhawk
Spirit. The only thing you need to do to get in is WEAR RED AND BE LOUD!

After the Rally, Redzone will be hosting a group hangout. There will be fun games
activities, and secret prizes that will be give out to the most spirited

One of the most popular on-campus events of the year! Come
watch and participate in live "whose-line-is-it anyway"-style improv comedy for a night

Come join the Coalition for Students with Disabilities & Seattle U's Dance Marathon for
some free ice cream and a chance to meet other students with similar interests in advocacy
and community engagement!

Whether you work out regularly or the gym intimidates you tonights your night! Come

The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit is a gathering of the university
community in celebration of the start of the school year. Immaculate
