Pacific Ocean and the Sulu Sea located near Asia. The climate is affected by tropical cyclones and
typhoons, and the average temperature is about 82 degrees F. The average rainfall is around 81 inches
per year or 7 inches per month. It rains about 144 days each year. The Philippines is a growing area with
high amounts of humidity.

Konnat
Scaevola taccada is also called konnat. This woody plant grows 10 feet tall. Thick leaves 2 to 8 inches
long crowd the tip of each stem. Konnat produces an abundance of white flowers 1/2 to 2 inches across
each with five petals. Later white, round fruits appear that are 1/2 inch or less long. Konnat tolerates
coastal, salty conditions. This plant is used as a windbreak or ornamental shrub, the flowers in garlands
and leis, and the leaves and buds are mixed with coconut oil to create perfume.

Ground Orchid
Spathoglottis plicata is also known as the ground orchid. This tall orchid grows on the ground and has
broad leaves. Rose-lavender flowers are produced on 3-foot flower stalks. This versatile orchid is native in
grassland areas in the Philippines and will grow in a home garden in the sun or shade. It is even
adaptable to rich to limestone soil.

Centipede Fern

between 6 to 12 feet long. It has a tidy appearance when compared to other ferns. This fern adds color
with new emerging fronds producing red and bronze colors. It grows on exposed hillsides in the
Philippines.

Manila Hemp Plant

Musa textillis is commonly called the abaca plant or Manila hemp plant. This plant is related to the banana
plant and has a similar appearance with giant banana plant shaped leaves. The fruit this ornamental tree
produces is inedible. Abaca grows 20 feet tall and is tolerant of salt water. The fiber from this plant was
used worldwide in the 1800s for ropes on sailing vessels.

Ornamental Trees in the Philippines

With its tropical climate, the Philippines is a haven for numerous trees. Many of the trees are fruit-bearing,
but some are more ornamental in nature. Anyone visiting the Philippines can't help but notice the beautiful
trees that line its streets, providing beautiful blooms year-round. Although some of the trees are not native
to the Philippines, they flourish well in this archipelago.

Kalachuchi
Belonging to the botanical family Apocynaceae, kalachuchi (Plumeria acuminata) is an ornamental tree
that produces flowers in white, orange, red or pink. The kalachuchi's flower has a small calyx that has five
lobes. Its corolla has big, shiny, oblong leaves. Originating from Mexico, kalachuchi grows very well in the
Philippines. The kalachuchi tree is 9 to 22 feet high and has smooth, fragile, shiny and succulent stems.
Crowded at the terminal end of the branch are oblong-shaped leaves measuring 15 inches long and 2
inches wide. Other kalachuchi trees produce white, fragrant flowers measuring 5 to 6 centimeters long.

Fire Tree, Flame Tree or Royal Poinciana

The fire tree (Delix regina) is the most widely-seen along the streets of Manila. It is similar to a large oak
tree, riddled with red blossoms that grow in thick clusters with fire-like carnation color. Rarely does the
tree have leaves when it is in full bloom. The fire tree may show bits of green from its flaming red foliage,
but in general, it has an intense blazing red effect. The clusters of flame-red flowers measure 4 to 5
inches across. The fire tree can grow up to 40 feet tall. Its wide-spreading, umbrella-like canopy can be
wider than its height.

Kanya Pistula or Golden Shower

The golden shower tree is not just attractive to behold, but it also has scented yellow flowers that are
relaxing and soothing. Golden shower (Cassia fistula) is a moderately-sized, erect deciduous tree. Its
leaves are pinnate, smooth and 11 to 16 inches long. It produces eight to 16 ovate, leaflets about 4 inches
long. The flowers are fragrant and bright yellow; borne in long, lax racemes, 12 to 20 inches long. The
pods are cylindrical, 12 to 24 inches long measuring approximately 1 inch thick, which are dark brown,
pendulous, smooth and shiny. Each pod produces numerous seeds, embedded in black, sweet pulp.

Ornamental Plants of the Philippines

The Philippines is a series of tropical islands that include mountain ranges and a variety of growing zones.
Because of its location, the Philippines gets ample rain and has very high average annual temperatures
that vary depending on elevation. Because of this, the Philippines is home to a great number of orchids
and many palms, including the popular sago palm. Non-native ornamental plants also can grow very well
in the Philippines.

Orchids
The Philippines has between 800 and 1,000 species of native orchids. One of the most beautiful species
is found only on the island of Mindanao. Discovered in 1882, the waling-waling grows to between 2 and 4
feet tall. This orchid only has one principal stem that terminates with flower clusters that bear 12 to 16
flowers in succession. The blossom is between 2 3/4 and 5 inches wide, among the largest in the
Philippines. Growing orchids in the Philippines is a common hobby. In addition to growing them in orchid
pots that allow air to reach the roots, they can often be wired to a shady tree trunk where they will take
root and grow exceptionally well.

Bromeliads
Although not native to the Philippines, bromeliads are grown and sold in the Philippines as an ornamental
plant. Bromeliads , tropical plants native to the Americas, grow in a wide range of soils and locations,
ranging from tropical rain forests to deserts and coastal areas. Bromeliads grow in the shade and prefer
cooler, shady areas. In some cases, growing bromeliads in the Philippines may require netting to reduce
sun intensity over the plants. When growing bromeliads in the Philippines, you may want to fertilize them
every two to three months.

Palms
Sago palms, a popular houseplant tree in the United States, are native to the Philippines. Sago palms
grow mostly in the south. Although most Americans view this palm as a tiny houseplant, sagos in their
natural range can grow to nearly 100 feet tall. Sagos can grow very quickly, putting on 5 feet in height per
year. Sago palms, however, have several very similar varieties that are smaller. Sagos can be kept in pots
to limit size or grown as an ornamental yard plant in most parts of the Philippines. They are very tolerant
of soils, and will grow in virtually any well draining soil.
