SECOND SUNDAY
OF THE
The Second Preparatory Week before the beginning of Great Lent, is the SUNDAY
OF THE P RODIGAL S ON , which IS A CLEAR REMINDER TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US
CONCERNING OUR S PIRITUAL L IFE AND THE E TERNAL C ONSEQUENCES OF OUR WORDS ,
THOUGHTS AND DEEDS THAT WILL EITHER J USTIFY US OR C ONDEMN US .
Today we recall the Parable of the Prodigal Son, which was narrated by our
Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Who reveals His Divine Truth to us and Who
shows us the Way to correct ourselves so that we can become worthy
Citizens of His Heavenly Kingdom.
The younger Son was bored at home, so having asked for and having received
his portion of the Inheritance, he went off into ...a Far Country... where he
squandered all his worldly possessions on riotous self-indulgence.
How often do we find ourselves enticed by the ways and pleasures of this world
our hearts being indifferent to the Holy Things of God and our mind
wandering lost ... in a Far Country... even while we stand in Church, or at
Prayer?
O UR SELF - INDULGENCE AND LACK OF PERSONAL DISCIPLINE CAUSES US TO BECOME
S PIRITUALLY P ARCHED AND STARVED just like the Prodigal Son who experienced
... a Severe Famine... in the ... Far Country... - which is what happens to us
WHEN WE ALIENATE OURSELVES FROM THE G RACIOUS L OVE OF OUR H EAVENLY F ATHER.
Only when the Prodigal Son was reduced utter destitution and forced to ... feed
the swine... due to his most desperate circumstances, did he finally ...
come to himself... i.e. regain his Spiritual Sight, which enabled him to
recognise his fallen state and Repent.
He was able to see what kind of person he had become and he realised how
deeply he had wounded his Loving Father.
O NLY WHEN THE P RODIGAL S ON WAS WILLING TO ADMIT ALL HIS ERRORS AND HAD PREPARED
HIMSELF TO SEEK HIS F ATHER S F ORGIVENESS , WAS HE ABLE TO RETURN TO THE S AFETY
AND J OY OF HIS F ATHER S H OUSE .
Furthermore, the fact that he had had to travel a long way without any money
in order to return Home, demonstrated his strong resolve to Repent his
prodigal lifestyle for THE MORE EFFORT WE MAKE TO RESOLVE OUR ERRORS, THE
MORE DETERMINED WE BECOME TO TRULY R EPENT OUR OWN PRODIGAL LIFESTYLE .
W E MUST CONSTANTLY HAVE THE SAME DETERMINATION AND MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO REJECT
OUR HABITUAL SINS AND DESTRUCTIVE SELF - INDULGENCE , WHICH DRAG US FURTHER AND
FURTHER AWAY FROM G OD AND ALL H IS G OODNESS .
Every day slowly but surely we must make our Return Journey to God and the
Peace and Joy of our True Homeland our ultimate Destination, which is
Eternal Life in His Heavenly Kingdom.
A S R EPENTANT SINNERS WE SHALL BE WARMLY WELCOMED H OME WITH INDESCRIBABLE J OY BY
OUR H EAVENLY F ATHER W HO SO P ATIENTLY AWAITS OUR S PIRITUAL R ETURN AND W HO
CEASELESSLY WATCHES FOR EACH OF US - EVEN WHILE WE ARE STILL A GREAT DISTANCE
AWAY FROM H IM .
Our Heavenly Father will embrace us warmly and forgive us all our Repented
sins.
Y ET IT IS ENTIRELY UP TO US TO COME TO OUR SENSES TO RECOGNISE AND TO R EPENT OUR
DESPERATE , ALIENATED S PIRITUAL C ONDITION , WHICH SHOULD COMPEL US TO TRULY
RESOLVE OUR ERRANT WAYS AND NO MATTER WHAT OBSTACLES MAY THREATEN OUR
PROGRESS TO RETURN TO H IS D IVINE L OVE .
However, we cannot take Gods Great Mercy for granted, and His Holy Church
makes this clear to us when, next Sunday Meatfare or Final Judgement
Sunday we are cautioned that our Lord God is not only our Loving
Heavenly Father, but He is also our Righteous, Unbiased Judge!

This particular verse is the ancient Hymn CHANTED AT ALL C HRISTIAN B APTISMS
DURING THE P ROCESSION OF THE N EWLY R EGENERATED INTO THE A SSEMBLY .
T HE S IGNET R ING signifies FAMILY IDENTITY OUR A DOPTION AT HOLY B APTISM AS A
C HILD OF G OD AND CO - HEIR WITH C HRIST TO OUR H EAVENLY F ATHER S KINGDOM .
H a g g a i 2 : 2 3 ... In that Day, says the Lord Almighty, I shall take you,
Zerubbabel, my servant, son of Shealtiel... and shall make you like a Signet
Ring; for I have Chosen you.
O FFICIAL R OYAL A CTS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD WERE AUTHENTICATED BY THE USE OF A
M ONARCH S S IGNET R ING so by designating Zerubbabel as His Signet, the Lord
was, in effect, stating that HE WOULD BE ACTING AS GOD S V ICE -R EGENT , CHARGED
WITH CARRYING OUT H IS S UPREME R ULE AND D IVINE W ILL .
On a deeper level: this is a strong Messianic Prophecy. When our soul becomes
Peaceful... then She (our soul) will receive Christ like a Signet Ring upon Her,
for She is the Image of God. Then She will be according to that Image,
because Heavenly is the Heavenly Man. And we need to bear the Image of
the Heavenly One, that is, Peace ... I wish the Lord Jesus may say to you: Put
Me as a Seal upon your arm. May Peace glow in your heart, Christ in your
Works, and may there be formed in you Wisdom and Justice and
Redemption. (St Ambrose Of Milan)
T HE S ANDALS signify how WE ARE EQUIPPED TO WALK THE P ATH OF R IGHTEOUS.
W E ARE ABLE to follow in the Footsteps of our Saviour, according to His Holy Gospel
BY THE W ILL OF GOD THE F ATHER , THROUGH THE T EACHINGS OF G OD THE SON , AND
A CTIVATED, I NSPIRED AND E NABLED BY G OD THE H OLY S PIRIT .
E p h e s i a n s 6 : 1 4 - 1 5 ... Stand therefore, having girded yourself with Truth,
having put on the Breastplate of Righteousness, and having shod your
feet with the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace...
C HRISTIANS FIGHT AGAINST ALL EVIL ARMED WITH D IVINE ARMOUR , WHICH IS GOD S
U NCREATED D IVINE E NERGY , GIVEN TO US AT H OLY B APTISM AND USED BY US
THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES AS WE BATTLE IN S PIRITUAL W ARFARE EVERY MOMENT OF THE
DAY .
A S F AITHFUL D ISCIPLES OF CHRIST WE HAVE PUT ON all the qualities bestowed upon us
AS S PIRITUAL A RMOUR : T RUTH , R IGHTEOUSNESS , P EACE AND F AITH , which are
constantly to be used in the conflict we face as we proceed ever closer to God
and His Heavenly Kingdom.
W ITHOUT S TRUGGLE THERE CAN BE NO D EIFICATION T HEOSIS OR S PIRITUAL P ERFECTION.
T HE F ATTED C ALF is more closely translated as the wheat-fed bull-calf or bull-calf
formed from wheat, which is a male calf that has been raised on wheat in
preparation FOR USE AS A SACRIFICIAL O FFERING .
As the Reconciliation of the Prodigal Son was not complete without the Sacrifice of
the calf, so too OUR R ECONCILIATION WITH G OD IS ACCOMPLISHED AND PERFECTED NOT BY OUR R EPENTANCE ALONE BUT BY C HRIST HAVING OFFERED H IMSELF AS THE
U LTIMATE , F INAL AND M OST PUREST OFFERING OF ALL .
The Festive Dining on an animal offering formed from wheat is a clear reference
to our partaking of the Holy Eucharist THUS OUR R ECONCILIATION WITH GOD IS
THROUGH R EPENTANCE-C ONFESSION AND H OLY E UCHARIST FOR THE F ORGIVENESS OF
SINS AND E TERNAL L IFE.
Consequently, BOTH THE OLD AND THE N EW C OVENANTS ARE FULFILLED AT THE
M ARRIAGE OF C HRIST THE H EAVENLY BRIDEGROOM AND H IS BRIDE , THE H OLY
C HURCH .
T HE RESENTFUL OLDER BROTHER SIGNIFIES THE HARDHEARTEDNESS OF THE P HARISEES AND
ALL S ELF -R IGHTEOUS , STUBBORN AND UNREPENTANT SINNERS to whom Christ related
this Parable.
G OD REQUIRES H IS F AITHFUL P EOPLE TO REJOICE WHENEVER EVEN THE MOST GUILTY
PERSON RETURNS TO GOD THROUGH SINCERE R EPENTANCE-C ONFESSION . (St Cyril Of
Alexandria)

The Eldest Sons FAILURE TO RECOGNISE HIS OWN SINS LEADS TO HIS SELF- RIGHTEOUS AND
MERCILESS ATTITUDE .
Contrast this with the Contrition of the Prodigal Son: The one who seems to
himself to be Righteous, who does not see the beam in his own eye, becomes
angry when forgiveness is granted to one who confesses his sins and begs
for mercy. (St Ambrose Of Milan)
The Older Sons INGRATITUDE IS ALSO APPARENT IN HIS ACCUSATION : ... T HOU NEVER
GAVE ME A YOUNG GOAT ... meanwhile HIS L OVING F ATHER HAS GRANTED HIM
EVERYTHING HE HAS !
W E ALWAYS COMPLAIN about and desire what we think we are lacking in material
possessions and wealth WHEN WE SHOULD BE CONSTANTLY EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST
GRATITUDE TO G OD FOR ALL H IS A BUNDANT B LESSINGS .
W HEN WE LEARN TO
ACKNOWLEDGE OUR BOUNDLESS BLESSINGS AND EXPRESS
THANKSGIVING TO GOD FOR HIS GREAT MERCY IN ALL THINGS , WE WILL NEVER BE
DISSATISFIED WITH ANYTHING IN THIS LIFE .
Instead WE WILL BE OVERJOYED BY HOW MUCH GOD HAS GRANTED US EACH AND EVERY
MOMENT OF THE DAY no matter how others may try to tempt us into a state of
discontentment and ingratitude!
