Justification for the Project

Fashion Technology emerged as a new profession offering multifarious career

opportunities.

According to Planning Commission, Govt. of India during the 11th Plan Period,
there is a need for above 6.5 million skilled human resource to cater to the
evergrowing demands of fashion, textile and apparel industries.

The academic institutions (Colleges and Universities) in the country are

producing approximately 80,000 students in fashion technology area per year;
thus creating a huge human supply gap to meet the industrial requirement.

The fashion and textile sector is the second largest employer after agriculture and
has capabilities and capacity to provide more employment opportunities.

However there is a dearth of availability of learning materials on these emerging

subjects.

Vocational education programmes and online education programmes are the best
suited mode to create skilled human resource.

Further the courses offered online are highly expensive and not affordable to the
majority of knowledge- job seekers including academicians and professionals.

In a developing economy like India, there is an urgent need to make available

free, open, high quality course materials on fashion and related subjects to the
benefit of larger masses of population and knowledge seekers.

NIFT being the pioneer in fashion education is well equipped to undertake this
project of developing e-content on fashion design and technology subjects being
offered by UGC recognized Indian Universities and make them accessible to all
the stake holders and hence this project.
18

The Project

The project envisages preparation and development of e-content in the broad area
of Fashion Design & Technology for those subjects which have been taught by
the UGC recognized institutions / universities at graduation, diploma and
vocational levels.

The project also proposes to utilize the pool of reservoir of experts available in
NIFT in the preparation of e-content.

Total no. of 73 faculty members owing allegiance to design, technology and

management disciplines have been identified as subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
from all 15 NIFT Centres. The consent from the identified SMEs have been
obtained. The Directors of the respective centres have also confirmed. The
letters from the directors are enclosed in the project.

It is proposed to prepare e-content of 40 hours of teaching per subject for UG, PG

& Diploma and 20 hours for vocational programmes using four quadrant
approach.

The project proposes to develop e-content for 120 subjects in a total period of one
year and four months; out of which 60 subjects will be developed in the first
seven months and e-content for 60 subjects will be developed in second seven
months period.
