1.0 INTRODUCTION:
1
OPERATING SISTEM(OS)
2.1) Meaning of open source OS
An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocates storage
and presents a default interface to the user between applications. But this OS is free, user have
the right to use, modify and redistribute the software for better interoperability.
openSUSE is a general purpose operating system built on top of the Linux kernel, developed by
the community-supported openSUSE Project and sponsored by SUSE and a number of other
companies. After Novell acquired SUSE Linux in January 2004, Novell decided to release the
SUSE Linux Professional product as a 100% open source project. In 2011 The Attachmate Group
acquired Novell and split Novell and SUSE into two autonomous subsidiary companies. SUSE
offers products and services around SUSE Linux Enterprisetheir commercial offering that is
based on openSUSE Linux. The current stable release is openSUSE 13.1 on November 19, 2013.

Ubuntu 12.04

Ubuntu 12.04 release on 5 february 2012, code-named "Precise Pangolin", the Ubuntu
developers have released the latest version of the popular Linux distribution to their users. The
six-monthly Ubuntu release cycle is organised so that every two years, a version is labelled as
a Long Term Support release and 12.04 is the latest of these. LTS versions were historically
supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server side, but with Precise, this
has been changed to five years of support for both editions. The character of an LTS release
implies a focus on stability and polish, as it has to be supported for a long time, and with five
years of planned support for the desktop version, the Ubuntu developer community has set itself
a big task to fulfill. This is reflected in the changes that have been included in the newest version:
new features are mostly concerned with polishing the user interface and making the underlying
technologies more stable.
Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of
a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with
system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities, but typically
does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. The term
application refers to both the application software and its implementation.

-Opera (see http://www.opera.com/): a web client program (for viewing and hearing web
pages) available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other UNIX systems.
EXAMPLE NO.2
WinRar- (see http://www.rarlab.com/):WinRAR is a powerful archive manager. It can backup your data
and reduce the size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet
and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.

5.Pervasive Computing
Google Glass
Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD). It was
developed by Google with the mission of producing a mass-market ubiquitous computer.
Google Glass displays information in a smartphone-like hands-free format. Wearers
communicate with the Internet via natural language voice commands.
EXAMPLE NO.2
Smart TV
A smart TV, sometimes referred to as connected TV or hybrid TV, (not to be confused with
IPTV, Internet TV, or with Web TV) is a television set or set-top box with integrated Internet
and Web 2.0 features, and is an example of technological convergence between computers and
television sets and set-top boxes. Besides the traditional functions of television sets and set-top
boxes provided through traditional broadcasting media, these devices can also provide online
interactive media, Internet TV, over-the-top content, as well as on-demand streaming media,
and home networking access.
CONCLUSION
Open Source development is a nicer fit than proprietary. It lends itself to many popular ethical
systems. One good example of this is Utilitarianism which states that the appropriate course of
action is the one that gives the most benefit to the most individuals. Given two applications, one
open one closed, there is no question that the open one is of more use to society as a whole. The
only question is whether the open application could exist. As I have defended, Open Source can
easily generate revenue. If Open Source was more widely used as a development model I have
no doubt that the quality of software would be greater.
Developers programming under Open Source can be confident that what they are producing will
contribute positively for the greatest number of society. Also, as was previously mentioned, the
Open Source community is very active. All members, whether programming, working on
documentation, or simply using an application, are seen as contributing to the greater good. It's a
breath of fresh air, and a fun place to be.
