Drinking days
UK teenagers are amongst Europes biggest binge-drinkers
The European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) surveyed 15-16 year olds
across 35 European countries in 2007 to assess trends in the use of alcohol and other substances.
88%
of UK students
had consumed
alcohol during the past
12 months and 57% had
been drunk the European
averages were 82%
and 39%
respectively.

Onethird of European
sharks are on the IUCN
Red List of Threatened Species.
Even the
worlds fastest
shark, the shortfin
mako, cant out-swim
fishing fleets in the tropical
seas it inhabits. Makos are widely
valued for their high quality meat
(fins and skin are also used) and
are increasingly sought by
vessels fishing for tuna
and swordfish.
In
October 2009,
UK Ministers announced a
decision to have a complete ban on
removal of shark fins at sea.
The
lucrative market
for shark fins used
in the luxury Asian dish of
shark fin soup is thought to be
increasing each year.
Scientists estimate that nearly a million
makos a year end up in the Hong Kong
shark fin trade.
Fins are often cut off sharks and
the rest of the body is discarded
at sea through a process
known as finning.
Blue sharks
and spurdog the
two shark species widely
considered the worlds most
abundant in their natural state
have both been seriously overfished
in European waters. Their North
Atlantic populations are now
considered Vulnerable and
Critically Endangered,
respectively.
Rays are closely related to sharks and some species are also
endangered. Sawfish (shark-like rays with long, tooth-studded
snouts) are in serious danger of extinction, with the European
population already wiped out.
Giant devil rays are found mainly in deep, offshore waters of the
Mediterranean Sea. They produce only a single pup per litter
(either every year or every two years). These rays suffer high
death rate from being accidentally caught. The giant devil ray
is classified as Endangered.

Butterfly effect
Falling butterfly numbers are an environmental warning
2008 was the poorest summer for butterfly numbers for more than 25 years.
The low breeding rate during the very bad summer of 2007, the
wettest on record, had a large impact on butterfly numbers during 2008.
Heavy rain makes it hard for butterflies to survive
they cant fly in the rain and that means they cant reach
the nectar they feed on.

Which are the MOST desirable cities in Britain... and the LEAST?
PlaceIndex scores 60 of Britains
major cities, providing them with
the opportunity to see how they
are perceived by the general public
and how far this perception is from
reality.
Respondents were asked to choose,
for example, which cities they felt had
a good atmosphere and which had a
bad atmosphere the proportion
who said bad was then subtracted

A silent crisis
We are already feeling the effects of climate change
but worse will follow
Human activities, in particular greenhouse gas emissions,
are recognised as the main cause of climate change.
We are beginning to see the effects of this change
all around the globe on food, health, poverty, water,
human displacement, and security.

GreenAware maps the relationship between household
carbon emissions and green behaviours in the UK.

emissions per

calculated by looking at official
figures on energy use, travel and general
consumption including food.
People in wealthy areas eat more exotic and
environmentally unfriendly food, such as prawns
flown from Malaysia, green beans from Kenya and
organic pears from New Zealand.
They fly more often and take foreign holidays
in more distant locations, drive more gas
guzzling 4x4s, have more cars per
household and live in bigger houses
which cost more to heat and

Put your money where your mouth is but how many of us are
prepared to do this for the sake of the environment?
We spent 35.5 billion on ethical purchases in 2007 this is up 15% over the previous year,
but is still a small proportion of the total annual consumer spend of more than 600 billion
Every household in the UK spent 707 in line with their

War...
The UK generates around 25 million tonnes of household waste per year
much of this ends up in landfill
Britain dumps more household waste into landfill
than most other countries in the EU (around two
thirds of its municipal waste goes to landfill; only
Portugal and Greece put more there).

IVF can give couples an instant family
but at a high risk
A multiple pregnancy ie twins, triplets

following fertility treatment than by
a natural conception.
A typical cycle of IVF treatment alone
is around 5,000 and not always
successful so there is a strong
