provided or bubbled in on form. Answers written elsewhere are not graded. Partial credit is not provided; either the
answer is correct or incorrect. The full assessment is taken only one time. One retake of the math test is permitted;
student is responsible for the testing cost. Applicants not passing the second math test are ineligible for admission.

Students needing assistance with math, reading or critical thinking are advised
to meet with the nursing advisor for referral to appropriate university resources.
MATH ASSESSMENT:
Mastery of basic mathematics is associated with success in the nursing major and is essential for performing medication calculations in
the clinical setting. Misplacement of a decimal point or a small calculation mistake may seem trivial, but an error makes a difference in
patient outcome. The assessment contains 50 problems; do not memorize metric to other measurement systems conversion. Ten
items require reading a statement to determine the answer. Change all fractions to decimals, making sure to carry your answer out to
the farthest point.

The doctor writes a prescription for Ampicillin 500 milligrams four times a day. The container is labeled Ampicillin 250 milligrams per
tablet. How many Ampicillin tablets does the nurse give the patient at 6:00pm?

Whole Numbers Answer Decimals Answer Fractions Answer

Addition 15 + 1987 = 94.7 + 153.11 = 1/3 + 1/4 =
Subtraction 211 – 53 = 43.8 – 11.0 = 1/2 - 1/5 =
Multiplication 18 x 6 = 0.25 x 105 = 1/10 x 8/7 =
Division 112 ÷ 4 = 206.3 ÷ 41 = 7/9 ÷ 3/9

READING ASSESSMENT
Ability to read complex content is important for nursing student success. There is no strategy for practice on this two-part assessment,
that involves matching words with meanings and answering questions about a reading passage.

A “carver” works with:  music  wood  books  animals  cars

To “repair” is to:  demolish  cease  explain  labor  fix

The baby developed inflammation in the sac around the heart. The baby then underwent major stomach surgery to prevent food from
backing up and will have a feeding tube into the stomach for about one year. After several attempts to remove the oxygen cannula, the
baby stopped breathing and an emergency tracheotomy was performed. This passage indicates that the baby is:
 improving and will be able to go home in a few days
 able to drink milk from a bottle
 experiencing significant breathing problems
 gaining weight and growing appropriately

CRITICAL THINKING ASSESSMENT

Ability to consider evidence and make judgments on observations is vital for nursing students. Critical thinking is based on
understanding the nature of a problem and using logic, questioning, and other types of reflection to determine if a conclusion is true.

Student A weighs more than Student B. Student C weighs less than D but Student E weighs less than Student C. Therefore, Student
C weighs less than Student F. What information must be provided so that the conclusion is true?
 Student A weighs more than Student F.
 Student B weighs more than Student F.
 Student F weighs more than Student A.
 Student F weighs more than Student E.
