BADMINTON RULES

Game Rules

Number of participants: 3+1 (for both Boys and Girls).


Only 1 Inter-IIT player from a department is allowed to play in playing team. If substitute is
also an Inter-IIT player, she/he can only replace the Inter-IIT player from the team. See the
rules for including Inter-IIT players.
Matches will consist of best of 3 sets of 21 points. Match will continue unless a player wins
by difference of 2 points, but only up to 30 points.
A match will consist of 3 games: 1st Singles, Doubles, 2nd Singles (if required). Only 1
player is allowed to repeat in any of the singles and doubles.
A team will have to give their playing order before starting of the match. This order cannot
be changed, in any case, after the match has started.
Following are considered as faults during a rally :
1) Shuttle touches a players body or dress.
2) Shuttle hits the ceiling or side walls (if any).
3) Double hitting the shuttle.
4) Shuttle is caught and held on the racket and then slung for a stroke.
5) A bad contact is not a fault. Bad contact means hitting frame or handle or hitting both
frame and string.
6) Touching the net accidentally during a rally. However if a player touches the net
accidentally after the rally is over, it is not a fault.
7) Hitting the shuttle when it is still in the opponents side.
8) Racket of a player can cross the net only when it is a follow through of a net kill shot.
9) A players foot may cross the net from below while playing a shot very close to net. It is not
considered as fault unless it causes any distraction to opponent player.

Service Rules

While serving, none of the servers or receivers feet should touch the lines of service court.

Before the server touches the shuttle (while serving), the receiver cannot move.

The line joining the handle to the head of the racket should make an obtuse angle with the
vertical, while serving.

While serving, the shuttle must be below the waist height at the point of hitting. Waist is a
virtual horizontal circle around the servers body, passing through the lowest rib.

Once server has made a backward swing of the racket for serving, s/he cannot pause and
delay the forward swing to unsettle the receiver. It is considered as fault.

If the server misses the shuttle during service, it is a fault.

General Rules

It is compulsory for all the players to come in proper attire. For Boys, T-shirts and shorts
are compulsory. For Girls, T-shirts and Shorts/Trackpants is required.
Non-marking gum sole shoes is mandatory for all the players. No one will be allowed to
play barefoot or in any other shoes.
A player has to arrange for rackets and shoes by themselves. These will not be provided
during the matches. Only shuttles will be provided for the matches.
All cheering junta should sit in the stands inside the New Indoor Courts.
The sports secys of the department should report with their team, to the conducting secys, 10
minutes before the scheduled start of their matches. Delay in starting of the match because
of unavailability of any of the players may result in walkover.
Any issues, whatsoever, must be conveyed to the conducting secys only by the sports secy
of a particular department.
Refreshments will be provided only for the players playing in the team.

Rules for including Inter-IIT players in PG Sports Tournaments

Who is an Inter-IIT player


- Any player who gets practice in the institute practice camp in a sports X will be considered
as an Inter-IIT or institute player in sports X.
- Any ex Inter-IIT player who currently is not in the camp or in the Inter-IIT team is also
considered an Inter-IIT player.
- Any player selected for the camp this year and is getting the practice in the camp is
considered an Inter-IIT player.
Since these players get practice and incentives from the institute, so to make the PG
tournaments fair, a restriction on how many players from a department can participate in a
particular sports event, is imposed. In any sports event, if there is a substitution which is
required and the substitute player is also an Inter-IIT player, a team can only substitute an
Inter-IIT player from another Inter-IIT player.
Depending on the sports event, the number of Inter-IIT players who are allowed can vary.
Given below are the numbers of Inter-IIT players who are allowed in various events.
This restriction is on both Boys and Girls team in any event.

For Team Events


There is a restriction on the number of Inter-IIT players who can participate in a particular
team event which is given below:
Cricket, Football: Only 2 Inter-IIT players from a department are allowed.
Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball: Only 1 Inter-IIT player from a department is allowed.

For Open Events


Events like Lawn Tennis and Squash are open events. We have similar rule for these also:
Tennis, Squash: Only 1 Inter-IIT player from a department is allowed.

For Athletics
Athletics consists of a number of events including Individual events and Relay events.
Individual Events: An Inter-IIT player can participate in maximum 3 individual events.
Relay Events: Out of 4 players, only 1 Inter-IIT player is allowed.

Note: For each PG sports events, Man of the Match award is given to best players of
semifinal, final and 3rd place matches. Also the consistent performer of a particular sports
tournament is given as Player of Tournament prize.
These prizes will be awarded to only non Inter-IIT players.
