NOVARES Resins for Hot melt Adhesives

NOVARES resins allow the formulator to produce an adhesive with optimum properties and
offer the following advantages:
improvement of adhesion properties and heat resistance
increase of hot tack
control of melt viscosity
adjustment of open time

Woodworking
Hot melt Adhesives
Typical hot melt application areas in which
NOVARES are successfully used are:
.

edge banding
profile wrapping
surface lamination
assembly

Adhesives are subjected to a variety of conditions, e.g. humidity and temperature fluctuations
in kitchen, bath and outdoor areas. Also stress in edge banding requires high quality products.
NOVARES resins are well established and ensure a good bond.

Due to their very good compatibility with EVA-copolymers even at high resin softening points
up to 160C, NOVARES TN grades are the resins of first choice in hot melt adhesives for woodworking applications.

The backbone polymer (in this case EVA) defines the typical properties of the hot melt adhesive.
The degree of the compatibility of resins with EVA determins the cloud point. Depending on the
chemical structure of the NOVARES types different cloud point ranges can be achieved.

Paper and Packaging Hot melt Adhesives

The equipment in the paper and packaging

industry operates with high speed cycle time
and therefore there are many demands on the
adhesives. The adhesive has to form a quick
bond and must not break under stress. Other
challenges to the adhesive are different
substrates and surfaces. The adhesives have
an important influence on the stability and
durability of the packaging.
Resin are commonly used to
improve hot tack
control melt viscosity
adjust open time

NOVARES Resins for Dispersion Adhesives

In dispersion adhesive systems based on acrylic, PVAc, VAE and SBR
NOVARES resins have taken a strong position. Ageing resistance and a
low emission value in the formulation are requirements which have to be
fulfilled by modifiers. The liquid resins NOVARES LS 500 and LX 200 are
popular solubilisers and carriers for resins used in dispersion adhesive
formulations. They can be used to replace solvents and plasticisers with
the advantage of having a lower proportion of volatile components.
LS 500 and LX 200 can assist in the formulation of dispersion adhesives
which meet EC1 requirements.

By using NOVARES LS 500 in acrylic based adhesives a clear improvement of the peel strength,
wet tack and dry tack is shown.

Open Time
The adjustment of open time has an important role to play during floor laying. Soft resins extend
this parameter. NOVARES TMA 20 was developed especially for this purpose.

NOVARES resins offer the following advantages in solvent borne adhesives, e.g. based
on PVAc, polychloroprene, SBR:

improved adhesion and cohesion

improved heat resistance

For the manufacture of parquet adhesives

especially NOVARES TNA 80 and TNA 90 resins
are recommended.
These resins are characterised by

NOVARES resins do not display any tendency to re-crystallise and can reduce or inhibit the
tendency of natural resins to crystallise in compounds.

NOVARES Resins for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) are permanently
tacky products, which achieve a bond under light
contact pressure. A PSA is able to carry forward forces
up to a certain level. The cohesion of that adhesive
can be improved by using high melting NOVARES
resins, e.g. C 160, TN 160 and TN 170. These resins
are endblock-reinforcers in PSA on the basis of styrenic
block copolymers like SIS, SBS und SEBS.

NOVARES Resins for Reactive Polyurethane

Hot melt Adhesives
In bath and kitchen areas there are strong demands for adhesives giving heat, humidity and
water resistance.
NOVARES resins act in reactive PU-adhesives as modifiers for the:
improvement of open time
adjustment of compounding viscosity
The hydrophobic character of NOVARES resins has a positive effect on the water resistance of
the adhesive.

The NOVARES C series are typical indene coumarone resins. NOVARES TT resins are produced
by the polymerisation of the petro-based aromatic C9-fraction and are the standard resins for
adhesive industry.
Tailor made resins which have influence on compatibility and solubility can be produced by:
targeted combinations of aromatic monomers (NOVARES TN, TL, TM, TX)
modification with aliphatic monomers
(NOVARES TK, TS, TP, TR)
modification with phenol
(NOVARES TNA, TA, TMA)
The adhesive producer can select his tailor made resin for his specific formulation from a wide
and comprehensive range of NOVARES types.
