Basic Customizing for Handling Unit

1. a. IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management Basics Materials

Management Inventory Management HU Requirement for Storage Locations
and Default Values for Deliveries

HU Requirement for Storage Locations and Default Values for Deliveries

In this step, for each storage location, you maintain the handling unit requirement
and the default values for creating a delivery.
You can override the default settings at plant level with more specific default
settings at storage location level.
When you set the HU requirement indicator for a storage location, you can only
make stock postings if you specify the handling unit. If you do not specify the
handling unit, the system does not create a material document when you make the
posting but creates a delivery document.
Since the stock in a storage location that is subject to a handling unit requirement is
packed in principle, you must maintain a partner storage location for transactions
such as unpacking. Use a storage location in the same plant as the partner storage
location that has the same or no warehouse number.
Requirements
You are only allowed to change the indicator HU requirement for storage locations
that do not contain any stock and that are not assigned to a decentralized
warehouse management system.
Activities
Maintain data as required.
Further Notes
Storage locations that are assigned to a decentralized warehouse management
system can be flagged as having an HU requirement in the decentralized
Warehouse Management System.
b. Select the table entry for plant 1000 and go to the storage location level in the
dialog structure.
c. Choose the entry for your storage location HU## and overwrite the partner
storage location 0001 with the key for your storage location (01##).

d. Assign sales organization 1000, distribution channel 10, shipping point 1000,
division 00, vendor 10000, and customer 10000 to your storage location HU##.

2. Display the number range for internal system identification of the handling units.
a) Choose SAP Reference IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management
Basics Technical Basics Define Number Ranges for Handling Units.

Define Number Ranges for Handling Units

When creating a handling unit, the system assigns a clear number internally. This
number is from the number range interval, which you can maintain in this menu
option.

Standard settings
An internal assignment is carried out in the standard delivery for handling units,
from the number range interval '01'. Maintenance of further intervals is not
necessary, as the interval cannot be set.

Transport
You transport number range objects as follows:
In the initial screen, choose Interval -> Transport.
Note that all intervals for the selected number range object are deleted in the target
system first. After the import, only the intervals you export are present. The number
statuses are imported with their values at the time of export.
Dependent tables are not transported or converted.

Actions
1. If the number range is not available for the interval '01', you must insert the
number interval '01'.
2. Enter the boundaries for the number interval. SAP recommends that you maintain
the number range interval in the maximum range.
b) Choose Display interval.

3. Check whether unique number assignment is activated

at client level.
a) Choose SAP Reference IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management
External Identification Set Up Unique Number Assignment for HU Identification.

Set Unique Number Assignment for HU Identification

In this activity, you establish that assignment of handling unit identification is
unique in this client.

Example
If you want to process or display a handling unit, it is only possible to find and select
it if this identification occurs only once.
If you allow multiple assignment of the same handling unit identification, the system
cannot determine exactly which handling unit you are requesting, thereby ruling out
any chance of scanner-supported processing, for example.

Requirements
Number assignment settings must be made for all packaging material types in
the Implementation Guide.

Standard Settings
The standard system contains unique number assignment.

Recommendation
If you want to use handling units outside outbound delivery processing, check the
appropriate checkbox.

Activities
Check the checkbox for unique number assignment .

Further Notes
It is only possible to indicate a storage location as HU-managed if you have set this
indicator.
The use of non-assigned handling units without unique number assignment is not
supported. In particular, a link from handling unit to storage unit is not possible if
there is no assurance of unique number assignment.
b) The indicator HU ID unique is set.
3

4. Display the number range for client-wide unique

handling unit identification.
a) Choose SAP Reference IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management
External Identification Number Range Maintenance for HU Identification.

Number Range Maintenance for HU Identification

In this activity, you can maintain number ranges for number assignment for
handling unit identification via number range intervals.
There are two types of number assignment:

Internal number assignment

The SAP System automatically assigns a sequential number from the specified
number range.
External number assignment
When creating a handling unit, you use a number from the external number range.
It is possible to maintain multiple internal and external number range intervals in
order to assign numbers from different intervals to various packaging material
types.

Requirements
The number assignment section in the packaging material type of the packaging
material must be customized for number assignment from an internal or external
number range interval in order for it to take place.

Standard Settings
A delivery of an internal and external number range interval with suggested values
is available.

Recommendation
When choosing your intervals, make sure that the number ranges will not overlap.

Activities
To define a number range, you must insert a new number range interval:
1. Enter an alphanumerical key with a maximum of two characters.
4

2. Enter the limits for the number interval. Individual number intervals may not
overlap. In other words, each number may only appear once.
3. If the number range is to be used for external number assignment, indicate it as
such.

Transportation
You transport number range objects as follows:
In the initial screen, choose Interval -> Transport.
Note that all intervals for the selected number range object are deleted in the target
system first. After the import, only the intervals you export are present. The number
statuses are imported with their values at the time of export.
Dependent tables are not transported or converted.

Further Notes
If you also plan to use handling units in the warehouse in connection with storage
units, make sure that the maintenance for number range intervals for storage units
has the same length as the intervals maintained here.
b) Choose Display intervals.

5. Display the number range for handling unit

identification by SSCC. The
number range object has the key LE_SSCC.
a) Choose SAP Reference IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management
External Identification SSCC Generation Acc. to EAN128 Maintain Number
Range Object for SSCC.

SSCC Generation Acc. to EAN128

In this IMG activity, you make the settings for generating shipping unit numbers /
Serialized Shipping Container Codes (SSCC).
To do this, you need an international location number (ILN) which you receive from
the subsidiary company responsible for your country, from the IAN (international
article number), or from the UCC in the US.
Create at least one number range object that hasn't been predefined by SAP before
you determine the parameters for your organizational units. If you have your own
ILN for each organizational unit, you can use the whole number range in these units
for the SSCC.

Note
Note that the intervals can overlap and therefore the same number can be assigned
twice. You must ensure for your area that the intervals do not overlap.

Maintain Number Range Object for SSCC

In this activity, you maintain the number range objects and their associated internal
and external intervals for the generation of SSCCs.
You need at least one object and one internal interval to create sequential SSCCs for
your entire organization (client). If you want to have numbering start again from one
for individual organizational units (plant, storage locations or warehouse numbers),
you must create new objects. In such cases, you would also need new ILN base
numbers.

Standard Settings
Number range object "LE_SSCC" is provided with interval "01" and a 9-digit number
length in the standard system.

Recommendation
ILN base numbers are normally 7 digits long, although sequential numbers with 9
digits are possible within the Number of Shipping Units/Serialized Shipping
Container Code (NSU/SSCC). For this reason, domain "CHAR9" is available for
defining number length. Base number and sequential number must occupy 16 digits
total (the entire NSU/SSCC is 18 digits in length, including check digit and type).
If the ILN base number has more or fewer digits (or if you provide individual
constant suffixes), you must adjust the domains accordingly.

You can activate the main memory buffering. EAN128 standard requires exclusively
unique, not sequential, numbering.
If you allow rolling intervals, after the first interval has been completely used up, the
system automatically reassigns the first number that was originally assigned in the
initial interval. The standard system does assume that the initial assignment
occurred at least one year ago, however.

Activities
Create the number range objects and intervals necessary for your organization,
paying special attention to the domain lengths and the length of the ILN base
number.
b) Enter the object key LE_SSCC in the Object field. Choose Number Ranges and
then Display intervals.

6. Check the assignment of the number range object, the

number range interval,
and the base ILN number to plant 1000.
a) Choose SAP Reference IMG Logistics - General Handling Unit Management
External Identification SSCC Generation Acc.to EAN128 Maintain SSCC
Generation for Each Plant/Storage Location.

Maintain SSCC Generation for Each Plant / Storage

Location
In this activity, you can set all parameters for generating Numbers of Shipping
Units/Serialized Shipping Container Codes (NSU/SSCCs), except for those on the
storage location level.

Example
Normally, your entire organization does not create more than 1,000 billion handling
units per year. Therefore, you only need one ILN from which to copy the 7-digit base
number into an entry (by leaving all key fields blank: plant and storage location, for
example). You have previously created a number range object with a rolling 9-digit
internal interval. Now you need to assign this number range object.
If you would also like to send smaller packages and manage them with NVE/SSCCs
as well, you would need more than 1,000 billion NSU/SSCCs per year. In this case,
you should enter another base number and a new number range object with an
internal interval. Assign these to the exact plant and storage location.

Requirements
You must have previously created a number range object and an internal interval. If you want to assign
NSU/SSCCs externally and you want the system to check if they lie within the valid range, you must also
create an external interval.

Recommendation
If you do not want to generate specific NSU/SSCCs for individual storage locations
(and/or plants), leave the storage location (and/or plant) blank, saving you time and
effort since there is less information to maintain. You may add information to the
individual storage location/plant entries later on if necessary.
If the number range is not sufficient for one year (the expected time period in the
standard system in which no NSU/SSCC is to be repeated), you can maintain
additional parameters in the same organizational unit. The number range object
may not be a rolling number range object in such a case. The system selects and
entry in the field Do not use?.
8

Further Notes
The system searches for NSU/SSCC generation parameters in the following key
order:
1. Plant and

storage location: the most detailed of the possible structures

2. Warehouse number: maintain the parameters for this organizational unit in the
next node
3. Plant: the same parameters for all storage locations of one plant. Leave the
Storage location field blank.
4. Client: the same parameters for all plants. Leave the Plant field blank as well.
Note that the intervals can overlap and therefore the same number assignment is
possible twice. You must ensure for your area that the intervals do not overlap.
b) There are two entries for plant 1000.

7. Call up the Handling Unit Monitor and display the detail

data for a handling
unit containing material T-K3-##.
a) Choose Logistics Central Functions Handling Unit Management Handling
Unit Monitor.

Handling Unit Monitor

Use
You can use an evaluation report to issue a list of handling units. By entering
selection criteria, you can limit the list of handling units and then display the list
using the ABAP List Viewer (ALV). In the list itself, you can process the selected
handling units or make posting changes as required.

Integration
Depending on the application, you can find the handling unit overview from the SAP
menu as follows:

From the SAP menu, select Logistics Central Functions Handling Unit
Management Handling Unit Monitor.
In the SAP menu, select Logistics Materials Management Material Master
Other Stock Overview. Display a material and select Environment
Handling unit
From the SAP menu, select Logistics Production Handling Unit
Management Repetitive Manufacturing Backflush HU Management
Handling Unit Monitor.

Features
You can limit the search for handling units by using the following selection criteria:

HU general data
Contents

Assignment to objects

User

Freely-defined fields

If you enter a material or batch, for example, in the selection criteria for the
contents of a handling unit, the system will display the highest-level handling unit
with its individual items. You can then make posting changes within the ABAP list
viewer. If you only want to display the higher-level handling unit for the selected
10

contents, you must select the Search only in the next higher-level HU (quick search)
option in the Contents section. However, if you choose this option, you cannot make
any posting changes within the ABAP list viewer.
The following functions are possible in the list that appears:

Displaying handling units

Editing handling units

Deleting handling units

Making posting changes for the stock category for all materials in a handling
unit (from blocked to unlimited-use, for example)

Making posting changes for materials of a handling unit from one storage
location to another

Displaying a handling units history

Displaying change documents for a handling unit

Making status changes (block/unblock a handling unit)

List display
The following options are available for displaying the selected handling units:
1. Handling units with cumulated material items
In the dual-level ABAP List Viewer, the (highest-level) handling unit appears in
the header line and the material items are cumulated according to material in
the material lines.
2. Handling unit hierarchy with totals and auxiliary packaging materials
In the header line for each HU, the system displays which material the HU
contains and in what quantities (if the HU only contains one material). If the
handling unit contains more than one material, the word MIX appears instead.
Expand an HU in order to display the contents of it. Each lower-level HU and
its contents is displayed separately. This list includes subtotals that group
together similar HUs or HUs that are similar in some aspects. These subtotals
are marked in a different color than the lines that represent the handling
units. You can record in which sequence these subtotals are to be created by
using Subtotals... in the ALV. For example, you could define the following
sequence: Amount (1)/Material number (2)/Load carrier (3)/ Cumulated
quantity of material to be packed (4). This setting results in the following:
o

As soon as a handling unit whose quantity of material to be packed (4)

is different from that of the previous handling units appears in the HU
11

list, the first subtotal is calculated (*). This first subtotal indicates the
amount of grouped HUs up to this point.
As soon as a handling unit whose load carrier (3) is different from that
of the previous handling units appears in the HU list, the second
subtotal is calculated (**). This second subtotal indicates the number
of HUs that were grouped up to this point.

As soon as a handling unit whose material (2) is different from that of

the previous handling units appears in the HU list, the third subtotal is
calculated (***). This third subtotal indicates the amount of grouped
HUs up to this point.

At the end of the list, the total amount (4) of HUs is taken as the fourth
subtotal (****).
For example, if the material changes first (third subtotal), but the load
carrier does not (second subtotal), the second subtotal is still
calculated.

3. Single-level list of handling units

The single-level ABAP List Viewer display is suitable for displaying handling
units that contain only one material. The material and quantity are displayed
for each handling unit. For handling units containing more than one material,
the word MIX appears. You cannot make any posting changes in this display
format.
b) Choose Execute.
c) Select the handling unit and choose Display Selected HUs.
