HONORING
River Bell Award:
MR. PETER H. STEPHAICH
Peter H. Stephaich has served the industry for over 30 years in a
number of key roles. He is currently Chairman and CEO of Blue
Danube Incorporated and Campbell Transportation Company, Inc.
Among the many roles he has held in industry stewardship positions,
Mr. Stephaich has helped lead the American Waterways Operators,
the National Waterways Foundation and the Waterways Council, Inc.
He has served as Commissioner and Vice Chairman of the Port of
Pittsburgh Commission and Chairman of the Allegheny Institute for
Public Policy.
Most recently, Mr. Stephaich has advocated on Capitol Hill for the
modernization of Americas aging waterways infrastructure. He works
with congressional leaders, gives testimony and urges passage of
important legislation to remedy the problems with the current water
resource development approach.
A native of New York City, Mr. Stephaich earned his bachelors degree
from Middlebury College and his M.B.A., with a major in finance, from
New York University. Mr. Stephaich has lived and traveled extensively
abroad and speaks five languages. He has two daughters and currently
lives in Pittsburgh.

River Legend Award:

MR. J. RUSSELL FLOWERS
J. Russell Flowers began his career in the marine industry in 1960.
He worked as a commercial airplane pilot for a company based in
Greenville, Mississippi with the understanding that he would fly for
them in exchange for the opportunity to learn the marine business.
He worked there until 1962 when he, along with two partners, formed
Security Barge Line, Inc.
In 1969, Mr. Flowers sold his interests in Security Barge Line, Inc. and
formed Flowers Transportation, Inc. When he sold his company in
1981, he had 18 towboats and 480 barges. Mr. Flowers merged Flowers
Transportation, Inc. with The Valley Line Company of St. Louis, Missouri,
where he then served as the President of the Transport Marine Group
for about two years. In 1989, he started the company he presently
owns: J. Russell Flowers, Inc., an independent marine leasing company.
Mr. Flowers has entered into various businesses outside of marinerelated companies, including banking businesses, but he always ventures
back into the business he knows and loves.

Welcome to the Seamens Church Institutes (SCI) 15th Annual River
Bell Awards Luncheon, and thank you for your generous support.
Youve heard the expression blood is thicker than water. From what
weve seen at SCI, water holds together a group of people pretty tightly.
The mariners weve met display all the characteristics of familypeople
loyal to each other and a common cause. American waterways weave
and intertwine like the branches of a family tree, outlining the map of
our countrys
bountiful inheritance.
Many families include people not connected to us by blood but by
spirit, mutual trust and shared goals. Maritime industry professionals
unite in this
way. They work together, they attend to each others needs and they
help
each other improve.
This afternoon, we celebrate two exceptional members of our
maritime family. They have impacted the lives of the community
through their extraordinary leadership and example. We acclaim their
accomplishments as significant milestones in the effort to enhance the
well being of mariners everywhere.
Members of a family look after one anotherin good times and bad.
SCI makes sure that no matter where their rigorous work takes them,
