Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
product?
Technology
Canon EOS
500 D
Camera

What does it
do?
The camera
we used had
the
capability to
record our
footage,
focus the
footage so
our work
was of a
high quality,
zoom in and
out using
the lens to
allow us to
have a
variety of
different
shots in our
film, and to
take pictures
in case we
needed stills
in our film or
on our blog.

How was it
used?
The camera
was used by
all three
members of
the group.
Depending
on who was
acting in
each scene,
we took it in
turns to
record the
footage,
making sure
the camera
was also
focused and
positioned
correctly for
our desired
shot as
established
in our
storyboard.
The camera
was placed
on a tripod
in some
shots to
make sure it
remained
steady and
level. In
some shots
we used the
camera as a
hand-held,
which
allowed us
to get more
deliberately
shaky
footage to
increase
drama, for
example
when our
female
character is
removing
the SD card
from her

Problems

Solutions

Occasionally
we would
forget to
charge the
camera to its
full capacity,
meaning
that on
occasions we
ran out of
battery and
had to stop
our filming
session. On
one occasion
the cameras
SD card was
forgotten,
meaning we
could record
no footage,
therefore we
had to return
home and
set out again
once having
acquired the
card.
Another
problem we
faced was
panning with
the camera,
as often our
actions were
jerky when
they were
supposed to
be smooth
and
seamless.
This made
our work
look less
professional.
A final
problem is
that the
camera was
not always in
focus when
filming,

To make sure
in the future
our camera
didnt run
out of
battery, we
always
ensured it
was charged
considerably
before we
set out
filming. On
the occasion
we forgot the
SD card for
the camera,
we had to
return home
to retrieve it
before
continuing
filming
after this we
made sure
we always
had all our
equipment
before
setting out,
meaning we
became
more
organised.
Once testing
out who
could pan
the best with
the camera,
we
appointed a
member of
the group to
always do
the panning,
as to achieve
the best
possible
seamless
movement
we could. To
ensure our

Lessons
learned?
The use of
the camera
taught us to
strive to be
more
organised
with our
equipment,
making sure
we always
had all we
would need
before
setting out
to film. We
also learned
to make sure
the camera
was always
focused
when
shooting so
our work
was of the
highest
quality and
to reduce
the amount
of footage
we would
have to
reshoot as it
was not of a
high enough
standard.

Tripod

The Tripod
enabled us
to place our
camera on a
still, secure
surface,
which
allowed all
three actors
to be in shot
without
having to
have
someone
holding the
camera. The
tripod holds
the camera
tightly in
place, allows
us to pan
steadily and
seamlessly,
and to make
sure our
shots were
level.

mobile
phone. The
cameras
screen
allowed us
to ensure
everything in
our shot was
in frame,
and that
nothing was
in the
background
that we
didnt want.
The tripod
was used by
all members
of the group
to ensure
the camera
was always
in the
correct
position. It
allowed us
to create
steady,
seamless
pans, gentle
zooms in an
out, and to
make sure
all our shot
were level
and not
skewed. This
overall gave
our work a
higher
quality
standard and
allowed us
to achieve
more marks.
The tripod
allowed us
not to have
someone
always
constantly
looking after
the camera.
When filming
the opening
establishing
shot of our
film, when
the camera

which leads
to blurry
footage we
had to scrap.

footage was
always of a
high quality,
we also
made sure
the camera
was always
focused so
no blurry
footage was
captured.

A problem
we faced
with the
tripod is that
it was not
always
possible to
make sure
the ground
we placed it
upon was
level,
meaning it
was not
always
possible to
make sure
all our shots
were level.
This resulted
in some
shots being
removed
from our
finished film
as they were
not of a good
enough
quality. The
tripod was
also very
fiddly to get
out and put
away as it
had many
handles and
locks to
undo.

To prevent
any of our
footage
being not
level, we
made sure
only to film
on level
pavements
that
provided a
good grip to
ensure the
tripod never
fell or never
toppled. To
reduce the
amount of
time it took
to prepare
and pack up
the tripod,
we worked
together as a
group to all
prepare the
tripod by all
taking up a
different job
regarding its
parts, for
example
each taking
a leg and
each
undoing the
claps.

The tripod
taught us to
always aim
to get a level
shot; this
could be
achieved by
checking the
spirit level
which is an
operation
the tripod
provides. It
also taught
us to be
wary of
where we
put our
equipment
as the legs
of the tripod
did get in
the way of
our filming
sometimes,
especially
when our
actors had
to run very
near to the
camera. It
taught us to
be more
spatially
aware and to
make sure
our
equipment
didnt block
the
pavements
for other
pedestrians
to use.

The MACS

The MAC
computers
were used
by our group
to store our
work. Our
footage was

our camera
onto the
computer to
then import

into our
finished film.

needed to
remain still,
we used the
tripod to
steady the
camera so
our shot
appeared
immobile
and
steadied.
This allowed
the audience
to focus
solely on the
setting of
our film,
instead of
the
unprofession
al jerky
camera
movements
that would
have
occurred if
we hadnt
used the
tripod.
The MAC
was used by
all members
of the group.
We inserted
the camera
SD card into
the MAC to
upload our
footage. We
then
imported our
footage into
Final Cut Pro
where we
edited it.
Editing was
done by all
members of
the group.
The MAC
also allowed
us to view
our finished
product full
screen to
make sure it
looked how
we wanted it
to. The MACs

As the MACS
were
unfamiliar to
all members
of the group,
over the
duration of
using them
we gradually
had to learn
how to use
them
correctly and
efficiently.
The software
was entirely
new to all of
us, including
new buttons
which at the
beginning
we were
unaware of
what they
did.

Over time
we all
learned how
to use the
MACS
efficiently,
meaning our
work could
be done
more
confidently
and at a
quicker
pace. If we
required
help, we
were able to
ask our
teachers and
peers who
were more
familiar with
the
computers
for help on
specific
things.

I have
learned over
the past
month using
the MACS
exactly how
to use them,
including
how to open
programs,
edit footage
using the
program
Final Cut Pro,
export
videos and
upload them
to YouTube
from the
MACS
storage.
Because of
the MACs I
have learned
how to edit
using Final
Cut Pro, such
as using the
blade tool
and adding

Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro

is the
program we
used on the
MAC

to edit our

provided us
with many
tools which
we could use
to edit, such
as speeding
up or
slowing
down
footage,
darkening or
lightening
colours,
making the
audio of our
film louder
or quieter,
cutting
specific
sections of
our footage

adding

parts in, and

further

to research

All members
of the group
used Final

the MAC
computers.
We would
upload our
footage off
the camera

the
computer
and then
export the
footage into
Final Cut Pro.
Once in the
program, the
footage
could be
edited as

using the
wide range
of buttons

with. Buttons

As this was
the first time
any member
of the group
had used
Final Cut Pro,
the software
was
completely
new to us
meaning it
took us a
while to get
quick and
efficient
without
editing. In
our spare
time we took
it in turns to
edit the
footage,
gradually
expanding
our
knowledge of
the program
and
discovering
new effects
to use.
Problems we

that it took

Time allowed
us to
eventually
understand
the program
and use all
of its tools to
their best
effect,
increasing
the marks
we would
receive on
our finished

were unsure
of any

teachers and

us learning
lots of new

From our
work we
have learned
many
techniques
of editing to
which we
were
previously
oblivious.
We have
experienced
film making

and now can
appreciate
how many
hours it
takes to edit

even a short

Time

thing we
learned
while editing
our footage.
Having a

included the

changing
exposure
and lighting
buttons, the

could apply
to the

the altering
of the speed
operation.
An example
of when we
used the
lighting
buttons is
when we
darkened
down the

the alley

showing the
gang

We did this
to make
them appear
more
mysterious
as they were
hidden in
darkness.

us a while to
understand
what each

meant;
meaning we
often had to
ask for help
off our
teachers or
peers who
may know
more than
we did. We
also had
difficulty
using some
operations
effectively as
we did know
how to use
them to their
best effect.
Also, having
so many
editing tools
it was
difficult to
ensure we
didn't over
edit our
footage,
making it
look
unrealistic
and too
fussy. The
time it took
to edit the
footage was
also a
problem as
we often
would
underestimat

time we
would need
to edit our
footage,
resulting in
us being
behind in our
own devised
schedule.
On some
occasions it
was difficult

to ensure it

asked many
sources for
feedback
which
allowed us to
hopefully
achieve the
greatest
enjoyment
from the
audience we
could. We
took into
consideratio
n what the
audience
would want
to see and
tried to
include what
we could of
that into our
work. To
ensure all

all our work

The editing

taught us to

what the

Sounds such

we were
unable to
produce our

work.
(Sounds
made by us
were also
included into
our film,
such as
heavy

footsteps,

gunshots.)
Once
searching for

we would
press the

to save the
sound to the

We could
then import
the sound
from the
computers

onto Final

where we
could place

sound that
was ideal for
our film. For
example
when
searching for
a police
siren, we
encountered
many sirens
that were for
foreign
police. As
our film was
set in
England, we
had to take
the time to
find a siren
that
belonged to
an English
police car,
therefore
making the
sound
appear more
realistic
amongst our
film.

thoroughly is
what
enabled us
to find our
desired
sounds. The
sounds we
included
would not
have always
been
relevant if
we had
simply
selected the
first one that
came up.
Taking the
time to
search the
website
carefully and
to debate
each sound
amongst the
group
allowed us to
find the
sounds that
were best
suited to our

showed us
that not
settling for
the first item
that came
up meant
that we
would
generally
get a better
sound after
searching
carefully.
This website
allowed us
to include
many more
effects into
our film,
such as
police sirens
and
heartbeats,
often aiding
us in
completely
changing the
tone of the
film by the
indication of
a sound. The
emotions
associated
with the
sounds we
picked
played a
crucial part
in making
sure our film
appeared to
be a Thriller
and to follow
that genres
codes and
conventions.

YouTube

YouTube is a
website that
allows
people from
all around
the world to
view videos
for free. The
website
contains
videos we
found useful
such as
short clips
from other
Thriller films
to gain
inspiration
and creative
aid. It also
allows
anyone with
a YouTube
account to
upload their
own video,
also for free,
so anyone
can view it
at their own
leisure at
the time
they chose
to. It offers a
huge library
of videos
which
allowed us
to gain a
considerable

the sound in
our desired
place. An
example of a
sound we
used in our
finished film
from this
website is
the
asynchronou
s sound
effect of
police sirens
which plays
as our
opening
comes to an
end.
YouTube was
used in our
lessons for
researching
other Thriller
films and for
uploading
our own
finished
project for
audiences to
view. The
sheer
amount of
videos on
YouTube
allowed us in
lessons to
watch many
Thriller film
clips and to
analyse
them in
detail,
picking out
what made
them good
and bad,
what
inspiration
we could
take from
them, what
genre codes
and
conventions
they
included and
for using
them in our

The main
problem
which
YouTube
offered us
was the
length of
time it would
take our
video to
upload. With
deadlines to
meet, it was
often
inconvenient
to wait for
our video to
upload to
YouTube as it
would take
several
minutes to
process the
video before
finishing the
upload. Also,
once the
video had
been
uploaded
and we
embedded
the video
onto our
blogs, often
the video
would refuse
to play on
our blogs,
making it

To make sure
we did not
waste time
while waiting
for our
videos to
upload to
YouTube, we
would
manage our
time to
ensure we
were
occupied
doing other
tasks from
our lesson
while waiting
for the video
to upload.
We would
also plan to
upload the
video with
time to spare
before the
lessons
ended, as to
make sure
we weren't
rushing to
get our work
finished
which could
have
resulted in
us making
silly rash
decisions
and mistakes

As I had
never before
uploaded a
video to
YouTube, this
part of the
process of
making our
film taught
me how to
make a
YouTube
channel,
upload
videos and
how to
embed them
on to

such as the

Before this

was unaware
how to

we then

using
YouTube was
when we

to make sure
our credits

meant
anyone

very user
friendly and
simple to

This website
is probably
the most
important
one I have
used when
in my Media
lessons, as it
has allowed
me to
present my
work to my
teachers and
peers
through
multiple
platforms
such as
PowerPoints,
Prezi, Scribd
and YouTube
videos. Once
making an
account on
this website
and creating
a blog, I was
able to
create the
required
pages of my
blog to
present my
work, such
as AS
Research
and AS
planning.
Upon these
pages I
could type
up my work,
upload
relevant
pictures to
support my
points,

A common
problem
discovered
with Blogger
is that it can
be quite
temperamen
tal. On
multiple
occasions
the website
would freeze
or not upload
my work
once I had
clicked
'upload'. Also
sometimes
my work
would
disappear off
my blog,
despite
having
uploaded it
and saved it.
These
technical
difficulties
often lead to
not being
able to
present my
work to my
teachers the
day I wanted
to, or having
to re-upload
my work as
when my
teachers had
gone to
mark it, it
was not
there.

It was not in
my power to
overcome to
technical
problems the
website
offered
sadly,
therefore on
occasions I
had to work
on other
things while
the website
wasn't cooperating to
hopefully not
waste any
more time.
Technical
support was
on offer
however
from IT
technicians if
a bigger
problem
occurred
when
attempting
to upload my
work.

As this was
the first blog
I had ever
created, I
learnt a
great deal
about using
the website
and how to
present your
work in an
appealing
way to the
audience. It
taught me
how to
embed my
work onto a
blog to
present in on
a variety of
platforms,
and to take
much care in
the
presentation
of my work

to widen my
variety of
work and to
overall
present my
work in a
professional
layout. This
website
allowed my
teachers to
see my work
and to refer
back to it
whenever
they needed
as the work
remains
there once

unless

website has
a very
simplistic
layout that
was no

and follow,

my work in
one place
allowed me
to quickly

any of my

Sound Cloud

Sound Cloud
is a free
music
website that
allowed me
to select a
song from it
to use in my
work. The
website
allows you
to download
songs, if the
uploader of
them has
allowed it, to
them use in
your own
work. The
website
allows you
to search for
songs, well
known and
independent
ones, which
you can
download for
free to use
as you wish.

in the
correct
order.
It allowed
me to select
a song from
it to use as a
background
for one of
my
evaluation
question
videos to
make my
work more
interesting
and
appealing to
an audience.
The website
is very
simple to
use, you just
type in the
song you are
looking for
into the
search bar
and then a
list of songs
shall appear
which are
what you're
searching
for. You are
able to listen
to the songs
before you
download
them to
make sure
they're what
you want.
Once
downloaded,
you can
place the
song in your
work, for
example in
the
background
of
presentation
s or in
videos. An
example of a
song I took
from this

To be able to
download a
song from
the website,
the person
who
uploaded the
song must
have
selected that
they're
allowing
people to
download it.
On several
occasions
our group
had listen to
songs we
thought as
possible
ones to
include in
our work,
only to find
out we were
unable to
download
them as the
user who
uploaded it
hadn't
permitted it.
This lead to
compromises
being made
in our work
as we could
not always
guarantee
we got
exactly the
song we
wanted. The
process of
finding
exactly the
right song
could also be
very time
consuming.

Thorough
searches of
the website
allowed us to
find songs
for our work
which we
thought
relevant and
of a good
quality. If our
first choice
was not
available for
download,
we would
continue to
search
further until
we found
another
which we
liked which
was. We also
allocated
time
specifically
for finding
songs as we
anticipated it
would be a
time
consuming
activity.
Allocating
time to do
this meant
we were still
able to meet
all deadlines
with our
work finished
to a standard
we were
happy with.

Including
music in our
work really
taught us
what
difference
background
music can
make to the
enjoyment
of your work,
such as the
ambiance
sounds or
the score we
placed in the
background.
It increased
the appeal
of our work
and taught
us to be very
thorough
when
selecting
sounds for
our work as
we should
not just
settle for
whatever is
available.

As to use the

have to be a

consuming
task that ate
into my
actual work
time.
Another time
consuming
factor is that
you have to
wait a few
minutes for
your
presentation
to be
uploaded to
the website,
making the
process
quite drawn
out and
lengthy.

Time
management
allowed me
to avoid any
real
problems
regarding
meeting
deadlines.
Despite the
website
taking a
while to
upload my

I was able to

preventing

There were
no technical
problems
with this

making it a
reasonable
efficient one

Presenting

taught me to

diverse with
my work and
not be
repetitive as
that shall

also offered
me another
website to
use to show
