VSC keeps clinical excellence

and personalized care
affordable, efficient and close
to home with local physicians.
--Kathy Kelly

Significant increases in healthcare

costs have lead many consumers
to seek alternatives to large medical
facilities. As a result, ambulatory
surgery centers like Viewmont Surgery
Center have become increasingly
popular since they utilize the same
physicians and anesthesiologists as
hospitals but at a fraction of the cost.
Price differences can vary significantly
based on the type of facility where
you seek care, said Dr. Merritt
Seshul. Since the government sets
the payment rates for facilities and
private insurers base their rates from
Medicare, ambulatory surgery centers
cost, on average, 40% less than hospital
outpatient units.
Dr. Seshul is one of several physicians
who perform surgeries at Viewmont
Surgery Center (VSC). Recently, he
and his partners have seen increased
demand from patients wanting to have
their procedures done at VSC due to
the multiple benefits provided for
the patient.

Why More People are

At Viewmont Surgery Center, the

reduction in cost is not the only benefit
that patients receive, said Kathy Kelly,

comfortable environment, the attentive
staff, short wait times and convenient

Finding

BetterQuality
of Life Through Palliative Care

If you think you already know what

palliative care can provide, expect
to be surprised:
What exactly does
palliative care mean?
The word palliative comes from
Latin and means to soothe or to
relieve. The idea behind palliative
care is to give patients better quality
of life by relieving them of pain
and suffering.
Is palliative care the
same as hospice?
Palliative care has traditionally been
associated with end-of-life care and
a six-month life expectancy. But, in

recent years, its use and scope have

widened dramatically. Nowadays,
palliative care serves patients with
curable illnesses assisting them on
the journey to recovery and helps
patients with chronic illnesses as
well, allowing them to enjoy life
even in the face of long-term
health conditions.
How is palliative care
different from
palliative medicine?
Palliative care typically involves
a patients final months of illness
while palliative medicine is more
closely tied to treatments for both

short-term recuperation and ongoing

illness. Palliative medicine, in effect,
is the mature version of palliative
care, serving a more diverse
cross-section of patients and
assisting them with all the
nuances of symptom management
and complex medical decisions.
How is Life Transitions
connected to
palliative medicine?
Life Transitions is a mobile medical
practice whose care is based on the
principles of palliative medicine. It
treats patients wherever they call
home, coming to them rather than

Who should be considered

for palliative medicine?

practice is an excellent option for
people who have trouble dealing
with physical exertion. Its especially
useful for managing needs related to
heart problems, pneumonia, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
and other acute medical issues.

How do I pay for

Payment for Life Transitions services

Heart
Health for Life

February is American Heart Month,

and Frye Regional Medical Center
is here to help you love your heart.
Heart disease touches all of us at
some time in our lives, either directly
or indirectly. Chances are you know
someone with heart disease
right now.
Frye Heart Center has treated more
than 91,000 hearts with 17 heart
specialists offering 272 combined
years of experience. Our emergency

department and cardiac cath labs are

available 24-hours a day, seven days
a week and fifty-two weeks per year,
including nights, weekends
and holidays.
We encourage you to focus on your
hearts health. How can you reduce
your personal risk of developing heart
disease? The following are some tried
and true ways to improve how you
feel and decrease your risk for
heart disease.

Eat healthy. A healthy diet includes

a variety of grains (especially whole
grains), fruits and vegetables. Opt for
foods low in saturated and trans fats,
cholesterol, added sugar and salt.
Choose fish, poultry and lean cuts of
meat, as well as low-fat or fat-free
dairy products. When preparing food,
broil, bake, roast or poach instead
of frying, and tame snack attacks
with low-fat options, such as animal
crackers, melba toast or
fat-free yogurt.

Exercise regularly. As little as 30

minutes of moderate-intensity
physical activity each day, but at least
five days a week, is all you need to
support heart health. Good ways to
keep your heart healthy include brisk
walking, riding a bike, hiking, dancing,
swimming, physical tasks around the
house, raking leaves, or painting
a room.
Dont smoke. According the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention,
smoking is the leading cause of
preventable death and disease
in the United States. The risk of
having a heart attack is six times
higher for smokers compared to
nonsmokers, with the chances
increasing depending on the number
of cigarettes smoked daily. Quitting
smoking lowers the risk of heart
disease immediately and just one
year of not smoking can cut heart
disease risk in half.

Maintain a healthy weight. A healthy

weight can be calculated by looking at
either body mass index (BMI) or waist
circumference. BMI, a calculation
based on height and weight, of 25
to 29.9 is considered overweight,
and 30 or higher is obese. A waist
measurement of more than 35 inches
for women and 40 inches for men
increases the risk of heart disease,
high blood pressure and other serious
health conditions. A weight loss of just
five to 10 percent of current weight
can help lower the risk for heart
disease. Gradual weight loss of
one-half to two pounds per week
is recommended to ensure
long-term success.
Knowing your personal risk factors is
the first step on the road to healthier
living. We can help to identify your
risks with a personal screening. Frye
Heart Center offers complimentary
cardiovascular screenings each
month on the second Thursday from

7 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Heart Center

lobby. Screenings include cholesterol
and glucose levels from a simple
finger stick, BMI and blood pressure
and peripheral vascular disease. The
screenings also offer counseling on
smoking cessation, diabetes, dietary
education, a personal risk assessment
and personalized education.
It is important to remember that
regardless of your age or current
state of health, its never too late
to take steps to protect your heart.
We look forward to assisting you in
understanding your cardiovascular
risks. Call 828-315-3391 to make a
personal appointment for your risk
assessment or walk-ins are
always welcome.

Meat-free
meals
Come late winter, diners may notice more meat-free selections
available on restaurant menus. Thats thanks to the Lenten season
that precedes Easter Sunday. During Lent, Christians traditionally
abstain from eating meat on Fridays. Lent is an ideal time for men
and women looking to get healthier to include more vegetables,
whole grains and seafood in their diets. Try substituting ground beef
with tofu, and incorporate vegetables where meat may be used.
For example, layer lasagna with slices of zucchini instead of filling
it with sausage. Plus, eat more fish. Research shows that fish high
in omega-3 fatty acids decreases the risk of abnormal heartbeats,
which can lead to sudden cardiac death. Omega-3 fatty acids also
decrease triglyceride levels, slow the growth rate of atherosclerotic
plaque and lower blood pressure.

Research shows that

there are numerous
benefits to participating
in aquatic activities.....

Achieving Goals Through

Aquatic Therapy
Its a phenomenal way to get
therapy, said Jessica. Many
participants who are involved
in aquatic therapy say they look
forward to their treatment sessions
because it relieves their pain and
it isnt as strenuous as exercise on
land. Those rehabilitating from knee
replacements, hip replacements,
and shoulder replacements have
found aquatic therapy to be an ideal
way to receive treatment.
Jessica Snyder, a Physical Therapy
Assistant at Abernethy Laurels
who is certified in aquatic therapy,
said adult orthopedic patients,
particularly those with chronic back
pain, joint replacements or after
spine surgery, who have difficulty
bearing any weight, can start an
exercise routine more quickly in the

water versus traditional land based

therapy.
According to numerous reports,
aquatic therapy has proven to be
highly effective at treating chronic
pain, improving functional mobility,
and increasing range of motion.
Those with conditions like arthritis
or joint pain, musculoskeletal
disorders, and chronic back pain
are ideal candidates for aquatic
therapy. Aquatics is also a popular
treatment for individuals with
Parkinsons disease, strokes, or
those rehabilitating from recent joint
replacement surgery.
Research shows that there are
numerous benefits to participating in
aquatic activities which makes water
therapy much more efficient than

on land. With aquatic therapy there

is little to no impact on the joints,
the risk of someone falling is greatly
decreased, and in many cases it
reduces swelling in the joints. The
buoyancy that water provides allows
muscles to work slowly and more
precisely, thus helping someone
receiving aquatic therapy achieve
their goals much sooner than
on land.
Many find that where there was
once pain and dependence, aquatic
therapy has provided them with less
pain, independence and a joyful
return to the activities they enjoy.

aquatic therapy, call Lisa Union at

Advanced Illness Support:

Asking for Help is the Best Way to Get It
I wish Id known about hospice earlier.

I wish Id known about hospice earlier.

That simple sentence is one that
people working in end-of-life care
often hear from families. Unfortunately,
its usually communicated after the
fact, meaning that a good deal of the
support that could have been available
ultimately went unused.
When families are faced with advanced
illness, their first impulse is to shoulder
all of the caregiving themselves. They
coordinate doctors appointments,
medications, errands, bathing, meal
preparation, and round-the-clock
availability in order to show their
compassion and love. They become
a whirlwind of motion and
good intentions.
As a disease progresses, however,
caregiving becomes harder and harder,
and family members get worn down,
tired, and even irritable. They discover
that they dont know how to provide
everything a loved one needs on their
own, and they struggle, sometimes for
months or years.
What they dont understand at the time
is that hospice offers a host of services
to make the journey more manageable
for everyone. Hospice providers have
lots of experience with advanced
illness, and they sincerely want people
to know that its not necessary to figure
things out on your own. Theres a team
ready to help make things better.
All you have to do is ask for the

services that you and your loved ones

need. Reaching out doesnt mean that
youve failed someone. It doesnt mean
youve given up anything. It simply
means that you want to give the people
you love the best care possible at a
time when it matters most.
Asking hospice for assistance opens up
a number of useful options:

Hospice can quickly help with pain

management so that a patient stays
comfortable

Hospice can provide care in a home,

facility, or wherever the patient prefers

Hospice can step in if theres a

medical crisis without having a patient

go to the emergency room

Hospice can admit a patient to a

facility briefly to give a caregiver time

to rest
All of these things are most beneficial
when you ask for help early on.
Monitoring a patients health, getting
to know him or her personally, and
creating an individual plan of care all
work in tandem to improve a patients
life and extend valuable time with
family and friends.
If youre unsure about hospice at first,
check with anyone whos been served
by them, and youll likely get a positive
response about the breadth of care
provided. Plus, wouldnt it be better

18 Spotlight On Health [ Hickory & Morganton ]

to inquire and be told, No, youre not

appropriate for hospice than to find
out, Oh, theres so much we could
have done to make things easier for
you all.
In essence, thats the simplest advice:
Just ask and be open. The best thing
you can discover is compassionate,
understanding professionals to support
you and your loved ones, along with an
offer of hope for their enhanced quality
of life.
Isnt that what we all want, after all?

Short Term Rehabilitation

in a Skilled Nursing Community
You are going to need rehabilitation.
These can be scary words when
uttered by doctors following a
planned or unplanned medical event.
Skilled nursing facilities are portrayed
as, a place you go to die, or as only
for people who cant take care of
themselves. However, many skilled
nursing facilities offer much more
than long term care.
Short term rehabilitation is a bridge
between the hospital and a safe
return to the home environment.
Facilities offer skilled nursing care
as well as occupational, physical,
and/or speech therapies following
injury, illness, or surgery. Medical
traumas such as; pneumonia, stroke,
congestive heart failure, open heart
surgery, or serious falls resulting
in bone fractures, leave patients
requiring physical assistance to
bathe, dress, toilet themselves,
and/or transfer in and out of bed.
However, elective surgeries such as
hip, knee, or shoulder replacements
and back surgery may also require
physical assistance and therapy
before patients can return to full
function, the length of stay in short

term rehabilitation can be as short as

7 days or as long as 100 days.

Who Pays?
A three-day hospital stay along with
a qualifying medical diagnosis is
required for Medicare(along with a
secondary insurance) to cover up to
100 days in a short term rehabilitation
facility. One hundred days is not
a guarantee; the patients health
condition determines whether he or
she is eligible for all 100 days. As long
as the patient has a need for skilled
services with her or her individual
physical, occupational and/or speech
therapy goals, Medicare will continue
to pay for occupancy, medications,
and therapies.

What are the

benefits?
The benefits of placement at a short
term rehab facility are many. Patients
who choose to stay at a short term
rehab facility can receive up to five
to six days per week of therapy, while
home health therapy is generally
two to three days per week and is

less comprehensive. Patients who

participate in skilled therapy are
more likely to improve function,
restore mobility, regain balance and
recover more quickly than patients
who elect to go home after a
medical event. Skilled nursing care
is available 24/7 to assess and treat
any medical status, meals and snacks
are supplied, and transportation is
provided by the facility. Daily activities
provide a social outlet while away
from home.
Short term rehabilitation is offered
by many facilities as a way of helping
patients regain their independence
and restore their health to its great
potential. Using a multidisciplinary
team approach, short term rehab
employs the combined efforts of
many specialties who focus on
different parts of health and wellness.
The goal of short term rehab is to
restore patients to their full potential
and to provide them with a smooth
transition to home and community.

How to Utilize

Medical
Equipment
to Reduce Risks of
Falling in Your Home

The likelihood of experiencing a fall increases with age and

with decline in health. According to the National Institute
of Health (NIH) website, one in three adults over the age of
65 will fall each year. The NIH also reported that 1.6 million
adults visit emergency rooms due to a fall and that falls were
the number one cause of fractures
(http://nihseniorhealth.gov/falls/aboutfalls/01.html).

which allows for safer transfers in and out of the bathtub.

When choosing one of these options, you could also add
a hand-held shower to allow you to adjust your water
direction to best meet your needs. Another simple tactic for
reducing your risk would be to add a non-skid surface to the
bottom of your bathtub or shower.

A fall with or without injury can occur inside or outside

of the home. Many falls occur inside due to confidence
in navigating familiar surroundings. Falls that result in
injuries most likely will affect a persons ability to remain
independent or safely return to their home. Many injuries
can lead to a permanent disability or, in worse cases, death.
Falls are preventable. Simple safety strategies such as:
minimizing clutter, removal of throw rugs, providing clear
pathways throughout the home and good lighting can help
to decrease your chance of falling and becoming injured.
There are also assistive devices to help you to navigate
safely both inside and outside your home such as the use of
a cane or walker to help you to steady your gait.
Bathrooms and stairs or steps are recognized as areas of
your home where your chances of falling are increased
significantly. A fall on stairs is very likely to result in serious
injury. There is a variety of medical equipment specifically
designed to help you reduce your risk of falling.
Bathrooms tend to be a problematic area because they
are generally small or even cramped, frequently have a

spills placing you at risk for falling. Economical solutions
for decreasing your risks are the installation of grab bars
in bathtub and showers or near toilets. For assistance with
bathing, you could choose a shower chair or transfer bench

Another option for reducing your

chances for falling when bathing
would be to consider the installation
of an accessible shower or bathtub.
The primary benefit for having
an accessible shower is that the
threshold is lowered to keep you
from having to step up and over it to
get into the shower. There are also
some showers that are specifically
designed to allow you to roll a
shower wheelchair into them. An
accessible bathtub is also designed
to allow you to step into the tub with
minimal effort. You will need to have
a professional installer assist you in
determining the best selection for
your current bathroom structure and
personal needs.
Steps and stairs pose a special risk.
They should always be kept clear
of any objects or clutter, be well lit
and have a flooring surface in good
repair. All steps and stairs should
have sturdy hand rail or rails for
support. Sometimes the installation

of a ramp is the best way to avoid the

tripping hazard of navigating stairs
and steps. Ramps are available for
a variety of physical conditions and
are constructed of many different
materials and designs. In some
cases, the best solution is to avoid
ambulating on the stairs by utilizing
a stair lift. Stair lifts also come in a
variety of styles and can be designed
to fit your specific stairways in order
to provide you with a safe way to
travel between floors of your home.

The Unifour
Chiropractic Alliance
Were Back Better Than Ever
The Unifour Chiropractic Alliance
(UCA) was started 15 years ago
and it consisted of local Doctors of
Chiropractic (DC). Over the years the
UCA never disappeared but some of its
original members retired and the UCA
was less active. Good News!! The UCA
is back in full swing.
Todays UCA is made up of 13 of the
areas leading Chiropractic physicians
including four of the original members.
Our physicians bring over 200 years
of combined experience to the UCA
which means, as a patient, you are
going to be in great hands (figuratively
and literally). Our doctors clinics can
be found spreading from NewtonConover to Taylorsville, Bethlehem to
Hildebran and, of course, in Hickory.
Chiropractic is a safe, reliable, nonevasive, alternative approach to taking
care of your healthcare needs. Most
people know that DCs can effectively
and efficiently treat most all forms
of back and neck pain. A majority of
people, even those who have been
chiropractic patients for years, dont
realize that back and neck pain just
scratches the surface of what a
chiropractic physician is capable of
treating. Here are some other areas
that our Chiropractors are very well
equipped to address:

Children

Children benefit from chiropractic care

probably more than adults. They are
usually more active which means more
possibility of hurting themselves from

activities of daily living or participating

in sports. Lets not forget they are also
growing. Many parents have already
seen the benefits of how chiropractic
care helps relieve colic. Chiropractic
care is safe for all ages including
infants, and in most cases children
tend to look forward to going to
the chiropractor.

Pregnancy

Expecting a new child should be a

joyous experience but it does come
with a few downsides, such as back
pain that is a result of weight gain
and change in center of gravity.
Chiropractic care can deal with these
issues safely throughout pregnancy.
Studies have shown that getting
treated by a chiropractor during
pregnancy may decrease labor times
and increase the possibility of a natural
birth. Our DCs have also developed a
good working relationship with most of
the OBGYNs in the area.

Headaches

We all have had a headache and

we all have tried lying down, taking
medication or tried fighting through
the pain. Chiropractic care is another
way to treat headaches and is more
effective than other methods. A study
from Duke University stated that
spinal manipulation showed almost
immediate improvement, significantly
fewer side-effects and longer
lasting relief.

24 Spotlight On Health [ Hickory & Morganton ]

Sports Injuries

It is going to happen sooner or later. If

you are active and do some form of
recreation you will injure something.
Chiropractic care is some of the
most effective treatment for sports
injuries. Almost every professional
sports team and a number of major
universities utilize chiropractors for
their athletes because only a very
small portion of injuries are in need of
surgery. Chiropractic care has been
shown to decrease pain and cause
a more rapid recovery while taking
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
that actually inhibit your bodies healing
mechanisms.

Extremities

Most people associate chiropractors

with the spine, but that is only part of
the story. Chiropractic care is some
of the most effective treatment for
joint pain all over the body. Whether
it is TMJ, shoulder pain, carpal
tunnel, knee pain, or ankle and foot
pain, chiropractic has you covered.
Chiropractors are also highly skilled
in finding the source of the problem.
Just because your wrist hurts does
not mean that is where the problem is
located because nerves can refer pain
to just about anywhere in the body.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis affects approximately 7 million

Americans. There is no exact cause
of scoliosis but research suggests
that genetics is the main source. That

means if anyone in your family has

scoliosis it would be a good idea for
you to get checked, especially if you
have not reached skeletal maturity
(about 20 years old). Chiropractic care
is highly effective in treating scoliosis.
If caught early enough chiropractic care
can help prevent scoliosis from
getting worse so that you may
live without complications.

Nutrition

Unlike most other healthcare providers,

chiropractors have an extensive,
in-depth education understanding
nutrition and its application in
optimizing health. Up-to-date research
indicates that the vast majority of
degenerative lifestyle diseases that are
affecting Americans quality of life are
triggered by our diets. These disorders
range from heart disease, diabetes,
cancer, obesity and arthritis. Proper
nutrition can alleviate and, many times,
prevent and/or reverse these problems.

is closer than
Your new smile

Personal Injury

Auto accidents and work-related

accidents can happen to anyone.
Some of these accidents are minor
and others can be more serious. The
minor injuries are where most people
tend to make the mistake not to seek
care because they dont initially feel
pain and think they are ok. Knowing is
better than guessing. Chiropractic care
is an effective treatment for personal
injury cases by speeding up recovery
times and is more cost effective than
most other forms of treatments.

Did you

know

Though laughter is often referred to as

the best medicine, no definitive study
has been conducted to determine the
effects of laughter on overall human
health, leaving open the possibility that
maintaining a good sense of humor and
a positive attitude are just as important,
if not more important, than finding time
to laugh each day. But even if laughter
is not medicinal, its benefits can mimic
those of exercise. When a person
laughs, his or her pulse and blood
pressure increase, and people tend to
breathe faster when they laugh. Faster

breathing sends more oxygen to the

tissues, which can help the heart and
lungs work more efficiently. In addition,
a Vanderbilt University study found that
between 10 and 15 minutes of laughter
can burn as many as 50 calories.
Finding time to laugh may also indirectly
improve the bodys immune system
response, as studies have suggested
that infection-fighting antibodies might
be more abundant in people who can
use humor to combat stress.

Cholesterol
and its relation to

heart disease
High cholesterol levels have long been
directly linked to heart disease. But as more
research into cholesterol and its relation to
heart disease is conducted, some doctors
are shifting their views on the relationship
between the two.
Statistics from the American Heart
Association indicate that 75 million
Americans currently suffer from heart
disease. And even though one-quarter of
the population takes cholesterol-lowering

medication and have reduced the fat

content of their diets, the AHA estimates
that more Americans will die of heart
disease than ever before.
More revelations are coming to the forefront
regarding cholesterol and heart disease.
New research has shown that statin drugs
are ineffective at reducing mortality rates in
most populations. Furthermore, according
to the Framingham Heart Study, which is the
longest-running and most comprehensive

study on heart disease to date, it was

demonstrated that cholesterol intake in
the diet had no correlation with heart
disease. The study found that men and
women with above average cholesterol
levels had nearly identical rates of
heart disease compared to those with
below average cholesterol rates.
Another potential eye opener is
that, in addition to cholesterol not
affecting heart disease risk, eating
high-cholesterol foods does not
elevate blood-cholesterol levels as
doctors once thought. Ancel Keys,
who is considered the father of the
theory that cholesterol contributes to
heart disease, now says that theres
no connection between cholesterol in
food and cholesterol in the blood.
If not cholesterol levels and the foods
one eats, what, then is responsible
for heart disease? Many medical
professionals and researchers now

believe the primary causes of heart

disease are inflammation and
oxidative stress.
According to Dr. Dwight Lundell, a
heart surgeon and author of the book,
The Great Cholesterol Lie, foods like
refined sugars and vegetable oils used
to preserve processed foods may lead
to the inflammation that ultimately
causes heart disease. Inflammation
is the bodys immune response to a
foreign invader. Foods high in sugar
and saturated fat can exacerbate
inflammation. Bacteria and other
unwanted substances in the body also
contribute to inflammation.
To combat inflammation, people can
adopt a healthy eating style. Fatty fish,
whole grains, leafy greens, fiber, and
nuts can help reduce inflammation.
Exercise also can reduce inflammation.
Research from Mark Hamer, PhD, an

Friends Share Everything!

epidemiologist at University College

London, found that, regardless of BMI
or weight, study participants who
completed 2.5 hours of moderate
exercise each week - about 20 minutes
a day - lowered their markers of
inflammation by at least 12 percent.
When a person exercises, muscle
tissue releases a protein molecule
called cytokine, which likely prompts
an inflammation drop. Just about any
type of workout that raises heart rate is
effective in helping with inflammation.
The public may have been misinformed
about just how vital it is to reduce
cholesterol levels. Contrary to popular
belief, high cholesterol may not
have the same connection to heart
disease as doctors once thought. In
fact, inflammation may be the bigger
component in heart disease risk.

What is the right

age for braces?
Severity of overcrowding as well as
bite issues will dictate when a
child should get braces.
Dental braces have been
used for decades to correct
various alignment and
spacing issues in the teeth.
Braces can be crucial to
the future of ones oral
health and prevent serious
issues down the line.
Roughly 25 percent of the
people in North America
who get braces are adults.
But braces still are geared
toward young people and
getting them on the road
to straight and properly
aligned teeth early on.
Braces correct a number
of problems, including
realigning the jaw and
alleviating overcrowding
of teeth. Crooked teeth

can trap food and debris

between them, making it
harder to floss and brush.
Wearing braces also
corrects the bite. If teeth
or jaws are not aligned
correctly, it can lead to
difficulty chewing food or
create jaw muscle pain.
Braces also may boost selfconfidence because they
can remedy appearance
issues that may prove
embarrassing.

removed once.

The American Association of

Orthodontics recommends that
children see an orthodontist for an
evaluation by age seven. The best
time for braces will be when the
orthodontist and parents collectively
decide its time to correct the
misalignment of a childs teeth.

A number of studies have shown

that, for common problems alleviated
with orthodontic work, youngsters
are better off waiting until all of
their permanent teeth have come
in. Antonio Secchi, a professor of
orthodontics at the University of
Pennsylvania, notes that if parents
choose to treat crooked teeth too early,
the child may need another phase of
intervention a few years down
the road.

Some orthodontists prefer a two-stage

approach to orthodontic treatment.
They may use a dental appliance or a
preliminary amount of braces to begin
moving the teeth while a child still has
most of his primary teeth. The second
stage begins when all the permanent
teeth are in. The thought is to shorten
the overall duration of treatment.
Other orthodontists follow the
traditional approach of putting on
braces once all the primary teeth
have fallen out. This occurs between
ages nine and 14. This is often a less
expensive approach because braces

How a healthy diet

helps you and the

environment

The right dietary choices

can not only improve your
health but the environment
as well. But urbanization and
increasingly busy schedules
force many people to
seek the most convenient,
and not necessarily the
healthiest, foods.
The growing reliance on
processed foods may be
hurting humans and the
planet they call home.
Processed foods tend to be
loaded with starches and
preservatives, increasing
consumers risk of diabetes
and being obese. In addition,
many prepackaged foods
are shipped from faraway
processing plants, and vast
amounts of fuel must be
consumed for products to
get from those plants to
local grocery stores.
But subtle shifts in dietary
habits and trends can
decrease mortality rates and
reduce global greenhouse
gas emissions resulting from
food production. Adopting
alternative diets that feature
a higher ratio of fish, whole
grains and locally grown
produce can greatly
reduce an individuals
carbon footprint.
The New Nordic Diet is
one example of a growing
dietary trend that has the
potential to improve the
health of humans and

the environment. So says

Henrik Saxe, an associate
professor who specializes in
sustainability at Copenhagen
University. Researchers
found a reduction in
greenhouse gases of at
least 6 percent with the New
Nordic Diet, as compared to
typical diets in Denmark.
The following are a few
ways average men and
women can eat to promote
their own health while
simultaneously protecting
the environment.
Adopt climate-friendly
eating habits that rely on
more domestic, in-season
foods.
Cut down on meat
consumption.
Eat organic foods as much
as possible.

Vegan means nothing animal; no meat, milk, cheese, yogurt, egg, ice cream, butter. Some people say, If you do
not eat animal, where are you going to get your protein, calcium, and B-12? A cow stands all day and eats nothing
but grass, so where does the cow get protein, calcium, and B-12? It is an established fact that a plant based diet is
the healthiest. There is much scientific research to support this. More importantly, a plant based diet was designed
by God for mankind. Vegan is the best diet. Vegan was the Garden of Eden diet. Vegan is the best way to eat for
preventing cancer and other diseases. The fact is malnutrition and starvation will kill about 14 million people this
year. If Americans reduce their intake of meat by just 10%, the land, water and energy freed up from growing
livestock feed would feed 100 million people.

3 Years in a Row

4 Times in a Row

Our patients are pleased,

and our peers are impressed.
The Womens Choice Award by WomenCertified represents the voice of female
consumers, and for the third consecutive year that group recognized Catawba Valley
Medical Center as one of Americas Best 100 Hospitals for Patient Experience. We also
recently received our fourth Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the
American Nurses Credentialing Center, the first hospital in the state and only the 23rd
hospital in the nation to do so. Together, theyre a nice confirmation of our
commitment to caring for the health needs of our community.
