Drug

Classification

Generic name:
Hyoscine-Nbutylbromide
(HNBB)

Antispasmodic;
Anticholinergic

Generic name:
Terbutaline sulfate

Beta2-selective
adrenergic agonist;
Sympathomimetic;
Tocolytic

Generic name:
Hydralazine

Antihypertensive;
Vasodilator
(peripheral)

Brand name:
Apresoline

Action
Hyoscine N-butyl
bromide (HBB) acts
by inhibiting
cholinergic
transmission in the
abdomino-pelvic
parasympathetic
ganglia, thus relieving
spasm in the smooth
muscles of
gastrointestinal,
biliary, urinary tract
and female genital
organs, especially the
cervico-uterine plexus.
Beta2-selective
adrenergic receptors
relax the pregnant
uterus

Acts on vascular
smooth muscle to
cause vasodilation,
primarily arteriolar,
decreasing peripheral

Nursing
Responsibility
Raise side rails as a
precaution because
some patients
become temporarily
excited or disoriented
and some develop
amnesia or become
drowsy.

Patient may
experience dizziness,
weakness, nausea,
vomiting and anxiety.
Watch out for irregular
heartbeat, chest pain
and tremors.
Instruct patient to
change postitions
slowly. Watch out for
unexplained fever,
muscle or joint aching

Rationalization
This drug is
prescribed to patients
during labor to help in
cervical dilatation.

This drug relaxes the

uterus in order to treat
preterm labor.

Drug can be used to

treat eclampsia. It can
also relax smooth
muscles and may
inhibit labor.

Generic name:
Magnesium sulfate

Electrolyte;
Laxative

Generic name:
Metoclopramide

Antiemetic;
Dopaminergic blocker

Generic name:
Oxytocin

Hormone

Generic name:
Methylergonovine
maleate

Oxytocic

Brand name:

resistance.
Cofactor of many
enzyme systems
involved in
eurochemical
transmission and
muscular excitability
Stimulates motility of
upper GI without
stimulating gastric,
biliary and pancreatic
secretions. It appears
to sensitize tissues to
the action of
acetylcholine. Also
induces the release of
prolactin.
Stimulates the uterus,
especially the gravid
uterus; causes the
myoepithelium of the
lacteal glands to
contract which results
in milk ejection.
A partial agonist or
antagonist at alpha
receptors, as a result,
it increases the
strength, duration and

and chest pain

Watch out for signs of
respiratory depression
and pulmonary
edema.

Inhibition of premature
labor

Drug may cause

weakness and
dizziness.
Watch out for
involuntary
movements of the
face, eyes or limbs.

Prevent vomiting to
avoid aspiration during
delivery. Release of
prolactin will help in
the production of
breastmilk of the
mother.

Monitor blood
pressure and uterine
tone

To produce uterine
contraction to control
postpartum bleeding
or hemorrhage

Watch out for

increased blood
pressure, convulsions,
pounding heartbeat,
chest pain.

To stimulate the uterus

to contract and induce
labor.

Methergine
Dexamethasone

Corticosteroid
Glucocorticoid
Hormone

Generic name:
Isoxsuprine
hydrochloride

Vasodilators

Brand name:
Duvadilan

frequency of uterine
contractions.
Enters target cells and
binds to specific
receptors, initiating
many complex
reactions.
Stimulates skeletal
beta receptors to
produce vasodilation;
stimulates cardiac
function and relaxes
uterus.

Monitor patient for

signs of infection.
Practice infection
control measures.
Assess patient for
rash, tachycardia and
chest pain.

Corticosteroid therapy
will help improve fetal
survival when given to
a woman in preterm
labor.
