4Safetyrequirementsand/orprotectivemeasures
4.1Structuresandcomponents
4.1.1General
Machineryshallcomplywiththesafetyrequirementsand/orprotectivemeasuresofthisclause.Inaddition,themachineshallbedesigned
accordingtotheprinciplesofENISO12100forhazardsrelevantbutnotsignificant,whicharedealtwithbythisdocument(e.g.sharpedges).
Mechanicalhazardscanarisewhenloadsactingonacraneexceedlimitingconditions.Suchanoverloadcancausetheentirecraneand/orits
componentstolosestability(elasticorrigidbody)aswellascausethesupportingstructureand/orcomponentstobesubjectedtofailure.

Inordertopreventthispotentialdanger,verificationshallbeprovidedfortheextremevaluesofloadeffectsbasedonallforceswhichact
simultaneouslyonthecranemultipliedbyadequate(partial)safetyfactorstoensurethatthecorrespondingloadinglimitsarenotexceeded.
Thisstandarddefinesloadsandloadcombinationsaswellasspecificvaluesoffactorsandcoefficientstobeappliedtomobilecranes.
Thelimitstateformaterialsandcomponentsshallbeindicatedintheformofnominalvalues,whicharelaiddowninrelationtothenominal
loadeffects(internalforcesorstresses)definedintherelevantstandards.
Allcasesinwhichlimitsareexceededandcanendangerthemechanicalstructure,e.g.creeping,elasticinstability,lossofstability,significant
displacements,fatigueorwear(includingdiscardofropes),uncontrolledmotionsandtemperaturelimitsshallbetakenintoaccount.
Theprocedureforthedesignandcalculationsisdescribedinthisclause.Theprocedureconsistsofidentifyingloadeffects(see4.1.2),determining
thelimitstates(see4.1.3)andtheproofofcompetence(seeannexL).Alternativelyadvancedandrecognizedtheoreticalmethods(e.g.elastokinetic
analysistosimulateloadeffects)orexperimentalmethods(e.g.measurementofloadeffectsortestsfordetermininglimitstatesorstraingaugetesting)
maybeused.Thesemethodsshallprovidethesamelevelofsafety.
4.1.2Loadeffects
4.1.2.1General

Allloadswhichactonthecraneoritssupportingsectionsincludingdeadweights,additionalloads(e.g.duetogravity,windloadsorother
ambientinfluences),testloadsandspecialloadsduringerectionordismantling(ofjibsystems)shallnotcausedamage,suchasfracturing,permanent
deformationsorunintentionaldisplacements.
Loadeffectsshallbedeterminedbasedonanelastostatic/rigidbodykineticmodelofthecraneandloadmodels.Loadsactingonthecraneatthe
sametimeshallbecombinedasgiveninannexD.
Itisassumedthat:
a. thenumberofimportantstresscycles(i.e.stresscyclescontributingsignificantlytofatigue:minimumonestresscycleperlift)isnothigherthan
thenumberofoperatingcycles
b. criticalnotchconditionsareavoidedbycarefuldesignandconstruction
c. therearenopredominantalternatingstresses.
Withtheseassumptionsitisnotnecessarytocarryoutafatigueanalysisontheloadbearingstructure.
Whenconsideringtestloadsthecraneshallbeinthesameconfigurationsasintendedforusewithoutanymodification(e.g.withoutchanging
outriggers,counterweight,counterweightposition).
Whenthemethodofpermissiblestresses(seeL.2.2)isapplied,theworkingloadshallbemultipliedbytheworkingloadfactor.
Whenthemethodofpartialsafetycoefficientsandlimitingstresses(seeL.2.3)isapplied,theworkingloadshallbemultipliedbytheworkingload
factoranditspartialsafetycoefficientsandallotherloadsbytheirrespectivepartialsafetycoefficients.
Loadswithalownumberofstresscyclesandlowamplitudesaretobeseenasmeanvaluesmultipliedbytheworkingloadfactorand/orthe
respectivepartialsafetycoefficients.
Theanalysisofloadeffectswithalternativeadvancedmethods,i.e.fromindividualevents(dynamicfactors)orrepresentativeuseofacraneshall
provideatleastequivalentlevelsofsafety.Itshalltakeintoaccountunfavourableoperatingconditionsandsequencesofmovementsofthecraneand/or
theload.

4.1.2.4Loadeffectsonnonsteelstructures

Nonsteelstructuresshallbedesignedwithequivalentsafetymarginsasforsteelstructuresfortheirintendedlifetime.Specialcharacteristics(e.g.
tensilecreeping,relaxation,anisotropy,thermalbehaviour)shallbeconsidered.Thetechnicalrequirementsforthesematerialsarenotdealtwithinthis
standard.Sufficientknowledgeandexperienceshallbeprovenbythemanufacturerofthecraneorthesupplierofsuchstructures.
4.1.2.5Loadeffectsonloadbearingcomponents

4.1.2.5.1General

Forthepurposeofthisstandardthetermloadbearingcomponentappliestoallsinglepartsofassembliesofpartsofacrane,whicharedirectly
subjectedtoloadeffects(see3.15).

Therearetwodifferentprocedurestodesignthecomponentsofacraneandtoprooftheircompetence.Eitherthecomponentsaredesigned
individually,usingtheapplicablestandardsconcerningloadeffectsandproofcalculationorthepredesignedcomponentshavetobeselected.
Forindividuallydesignedcomponentstheloadeffectsderivedfromtheserviceconditionsshallbeestablishedbythecranedesigner.
Forpredesignedcomponentsthecranedesignerandthecomponentdesigner/suppliershallidentifyandagreeupontherelevantloadeffects
derivedfromtheserviceconditions(see4.1.3.4).
4.1.2.5.2Loadeffectsonmechanisms

Differingfromthe(steel)structures,whichareloadedbyonlyoneimportantstresscycleperoperatingcycle,themechanismsareloadedby
multiplestresscyclesdependingonlinearmovements,distancesandthenumberofrotationalmovements.
Theestimationofthenumberofstresscyclesduringtheassumedlifetimeofthemechanismsisbaseduponthewrittenagreementuponservice
conditionsbetweentheuserandthemanufacturerofthecrane.
Wheretheuseofmechanismsisunknown,thestresscyclesandassumedlifetimeshallcorrespondwiththosevaluesavailablefromprevious
experience.

ThevaluestobeconsideredfortherigidbodystabilityshallbetakenasspecifiedinTable1and2ofISO4305:1991.
Tippinglinesofmobilecranesdependontheindividualdesign.ExamplesfortippinglinesaregiveninannexAofISO4305:1991.Forcrawler
cranesspecialattentionhastobegiventoforwardorbackwardtippingoverthesprocketand/orfirstroller.
Itisassumedthatthecraneisoperatedonafirmandlevelsurface(upto1%gradientoftheground).Ifgreatergradientsoftheslewingplaneare
allowedbythemanufacturer,specialcapacitychartsshallbeprovided.Aminimumsidegradientof0.5%forcranesonoutriggersand/or1%forcranes
freeontyresorcrawlersshallbetakenintoaccount.

4.1.2.6.2Stabilityforsuddenreleaseoftheload

Accelerationsduetosuddenreleaseoftheloadcancausetippingbackwardsofthecraneorcancauseunintendedbackwardmotionsofpartsof
thecrane.Insteadofanexactcalculationaverticalupwardforceactingontheunloadedcranewithoutwindloadsmaybeused.
Theverticalupwardforceshallbetakenas10%oftheratedcapacityforcraneswithclassificationA1accordingtoISO43012:.
4.1.2.6.3Stabilityduringerectionanddismantling

Therigidbodystabilityforerectionoftheunloadedcraneanditsdismantlingprocedureshallbeconsideredasaspecialloadingcondition.The
deadloadsandtheadditionalloads(gravitational,windloads,etc.)increasingthetippingmomentshallbeamplifiedwithasafetycoefficient1,1.
4.1.2.6.4Additionaleffects

Thefollowingadditionaleffectsshallbeconsideredtodetermineadequatestabilityofthecrane:
a. Additionaleffectsduetoelasticityofthecrane
Specialattentionshallbepaidtotheelasticbehaviourofthecrane,considering:
effectsduetoelasticdeformationofcarrier,wheels,tyres,crawlersandoutriggers
effectsduetoangledisplacementofthejibsystemduringslewingoftheloadaccordingtodifferentstiffnessofthecarrierindifferent
slewranges.
b. Additionaleffectsduetoacceleration
Accelerationsduetoabruptstarting/stoppingofmovementsofthecraneand/ortheloadcancauseunintendedmovementsofthecrane
and/ortheload(kineticenergy).Todetermineadequatestabilitytoavoidtippingofthecranesufficientpotentialenergyshallbeprovided.
Thesedynamiceffectsshallbecoveredbycalculationorbyasimplifiedprocedureusingatippingangle,seeannexF.

4.1.3Limitstates
4.1.3.1General

Limitstatesshallbeasspecifiedbelow.Wherethelimitstatesofmaterialsandcomponentsarenotgivenbelow,theyshallbelaiddownas
writtenagreementbetweenthecranemanufacturerandthesupplierofthesematerialsandcomponentsonthebasisofrecognizedmethodologyand
standards.
Thelimitingvaluesformaterialsshallincludethestaticanddynamic(whererequired)propertiesforstrengthandductilitydependingonthe
dimension,thekindoffabrication(heattreatment),theallowedtemperatureforinandoutofserviceconditions,theelasticpropertiesandtheir
