Introduction
This program is based on the book, Passing the Ohio Ninth-Grade Proficiency Test, for
the purpose of test preparation. This program will benefit you in many ways. The
tutorial sections explain what will be covered on the test, how many questions, and how
the test is designed so you can become familiar with the test before you sit down to take
it. You will be able to select the learning outcomes, one by one, to practice simulated
proficiency test questions. Feedback will be given as you answer the questions.
The Practice Tests, styled in the format of the Ohio Proficiency tests, are offered for
Science, Math, Citizenship, Reading, and Writing. The program scores each practice test,
except for writing, and lets you know how well you did on each learning outcome. In
addition, teachers can use the Administrator program to track students progress in
completing the tutorial program by subject and learning outcome.
This software has been designed to be interactive and fun without distracting you from the
educational importance of the program. You will learn powerful strategies for success in
Passing the Ohio Ninth-Grade Proficiency Test.
Installation Instructions
You can use this program by fully installing the program onto your computer or by
running the program directly from the CD-ROM. The full installation of this program
requires 35MB of disk space on your hard drive. In order to print the Users Guide,
License Agreement, and the Text Anxiety and Writing Exercises, you must install Adobe
Acrobat Reader 4.0 onto your hard drive. Installation directions are included in the
instructions that follow.
Macintosh
Full Installation (35 MB available disk space needed)
1. Place your CD in the CD-ROM drive.
Getting Started
How to Navigate
Before you explore each subject area, be sure to familiarize yourself with the How to
Navigate screens. On these pages, you will learn how to maneuver through the course as
well as review the language and format of the CD-ROM. You need to be familiar with
terms such as learning outcome and strand.
Tips and Hints
Throughout the tutorial program, you will often be able to select either a Tips or Hints
button. These buttons provide additional information or test-taking strategies to help
you respond correctly to a question.
Introductory Pages
Three or four pages of introductory material can be viewed at the beginning of each section.
You will receive valuable information from these pages, such as how many questions will be
on the proficiency test for each subject, what types of questions are used in the test, and how
the test is scored. In addition, this introduction re-emphasizes the skills needed to be
successful on the test.
Instructions
Instructions are bold, italic and appear at the bottom of the page or below the text. Read
the instructions carefully because they tell you what to do next.
Checkmarks
After you have finished each learning outcome, a yellow checkmark will appear on the
strand menu screen to identify the learning outcome as completed. Since records are then
stored each time you exit the course, these checkmarks will be visible next time you enter
the program with the same password. This helps you figure out what learning outcomes
you need to complete.
This brings up the Logon screen. You must key in your teachers name (i.e., Mrs. Cox),
your first name, last name, and then a password. It is important that you pick a
password that is easy to type and remember. If you forget your password or the logon is
unsuccessful for some reason, the cursor will return to the teachers name field and you
can start again. After several tries, if you are still unsuccessful in logging on, you can quit
and have your teacher look up your password in your student folder. This folder is
automatically set-up the first time you log on to maintain your student records. (See pg.
11, Student Data Folder Location)
The first screen you will see is the How to Navigate screen. Read through this
information carefully so you will understand how the course works. Follow the
navigational instructions.
Next you can select a subject from the Main Menu. In addition to the required
proficiency test subjects, you will find the Test Anxiety and Test Taking Strategies
sections. You should go through these sections first because they will help improve your
test-taking skills and score on the Ohio Proficiency Test.
Each of the required proficiency test subjects takes approximately 30-40 minutes to
complete. Make sure you pay close attention to the introduction at the beginning of each
subject. Once you have read through the introductory pages, the Strand Menu will
appear. You need to select a Strand and then a Learning Outcome. You will have a
brief review and explanation of each learning outcome, followed by simulated proficiency
test questions. You will be given two attempts to answer each question correctly. Each
attempt provides immediate feedback to prompt or explain the correct answer. The
Writing and Test Anxiety sections have a writing function for completing the sections
exercises. You need to be sure and type your name on the exercise before you begin.
This brings up the Logon screen. You must type in your name and password. Make
sure you use the name that students call you so you can link to their files appropriately.
Also, it is important that you pick a password that is easy to type and remember. If you
forget your password or the logon is unsuccessful for some reason, the cursor will return
to the teachers name field and you can start again. After several tries, if you are still
unsuccessful in logging on, you can quit and look up your password in your teacher
folder. This folder is automatically set-up the first time you log on to maintain your
student records. To locate the folder:
Macintosh:
Go to the hard drive System folder/Preferences/RunA3Mdata/9thGrade/Admin
and find the folder with your name. The logon information is found in the document
named UserInfo.txt.
Windows:
Go to the Start menu, select Programs, then Windows Explorer to find
Windows/A3w_data/9thGrade/Admin and find the folder with your name. The
logon information is found in the document named UserInfo.txt.
Once the program begins, you can view each of the students records. You can browse
from student to student or take a detailed look at a particular students progress. You can
delete a student record by selecting the CLEAR button at the top of the screen. This will
only delete the current student record. You can print a student record by selecting the
PRINT button at the top of the screen, or you can print a specific test or answer key. If
the Print Window is overlaying the Administrator Window, click on the top of the Print
Window and move it to another location on the screen.
Since you need to manually score the Writing practice tests, they are not included in this
program. Use the file WritAns.PDF to grade the students written responses.
