Market
a) Market size and growth
The target markets for the SKF Laser Vibrometer are in the area of advanced condition
monitoring and quality assurance technology for end-of-line testing applications (QA). Today,
the Automotive industry represents 50% of sales volume for laser vibrometers, the remaining
50% are spread to other industries such as household appliances, electric motors, fans,
computer drives and general industrial applications. 90% of the market of laser vibrometers
today is in Europe, main reasons are high quality standards and expectations and also the high
level of automized manufacturing processes. Asia represents 4% of todays potential but the
tendency shows increasing demand. End-of-line noise control demand increases, it is used to
evaluate the acoustic behavior of mechanical products or components, but also for root cause
analyses (RCA) of noisy products in order to continuously improve the manufacturing
processes. The market is expected to grow by 10% per year.
b) Market trends
The world of technology becomes more and more complex and safety standards become an
increasingly important factor. So in many applications it will be in future beneficial, if service
engineers can stay away from harsh environment or can keep more safe distances to
measuring objects. Thus the non-contact SKF Laser Vibrometer is ideal for these monitoring
challenges.
In many OEM industries the pressure is increasing to guarantee 100% quality. SKF measures
the noise of bearings at each production line (channel), other industries will face the same
challenges in future. Especially Automotive customers are forcing their suppliers to 100% inline
quality and function testing. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is ideal to be used for in-line noise
testing especially in noise critical applications such as electric motors, household appliances,
fans, pumps and many more. The laser can simply be installed and allows flexible resetting for
changes in manufacturing batches.
c) Technology trends
Substitution of mechanical sensor arrangements by laser vibrometer is a strong growing trend.
The use of laser vibrometers in end-of-line testing, offers a more flexible solution and is also
more cost effective than mechanical systems. Also the measurement results are better and
stable because the signal is not influenced at all by mechanical systems.

d) Customers and key players

Our potential SKF Laser Vibrometer customers are the following:

SKF bearing factories: The SKF Laser Vibrometer MSL-7000 A has become the standard
sensor for noise testing machines for bearings made by CMC Steyr. It has been decided that
in future all new noise testing equipment will use the SKF Laser Vibrometer. It offers easier
resetting, lower cost for sensor repair and easier calibration. We see also a tendency that
SKF factories will over time replace the old piezoelectric pickups by the laser system. This
has a potential of some 20 to 30 pieces p.a. and will be sold directly from CMC Steyr to
factories of Automotive and Strategic Industries.

Other bearing industry: Bearings are products with almost 100% end-of-line noise
testing, there is also a large potential for refurbishment or sensor exchange. This has a
potential of some 500 to 1,000 pieces especially in Asian factories.

Condition monitoring in different industries: Targets are existing and new customers
especially for SKF Microlog but also other data collectors where non-contact measurements
bring benefits. The aim is to get a share of at least 5% of customers using a SKF Microlog
who will also use the SKF Laser Vibrometer. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is a complementary
vibration sensor for high-end measurements and monitoring. It adds functionality to service
and maintenance engineers in the classical condition monitoring industries such as Pulp and
Paper, Mining, Metals industry or Oil and Gas. It enables service engineers to take
measurements on positions which are difficult or impossible to reach, on rotating parts and
hot surfaces, even measurements through glass or windows are possible thus it can be used
in harsh environment or for areas which are not allowed to enter or applications where the
measurement object is difficult to reach.

OEM customers (Automotive and Industrial): More and more customers need to do
end-of-line noise testing for their products. Especially for noise critical applications such as
fans, electric motors, pumps, household appliances and many more. The use of the SKF
Laser Vibrometer supports an easy installation and flexible resetting in the manufacturing
line. The unit is also easy to calibrate and do not need to be sent for calibrations. It can be
done by machine operators, no technical experts are needed. This potential business needs
still deeper market investigation in order to define potentials and targets. It is also planned
to develop Noise analyzing kits which is a combination of SKF Laser Vibrometer with the
measurement electronics CMME 7000 together with the FPM software (FPM = Finger Print
Method) from CMC Steyr. A NMO for these kits is scheduled for Quarter 1 in 2014.
OEM customers use the laser vibrometer not only in manufacturing but also in the
development areas, i.e. to observe product testing in the development phase.

e) SKF and Polytec

Polytec GmbH in Germany is our supplier who makes the laser vibrometer for us in the
individual SKF industrial design. The SKF Laser Vibrometer MSL-7000 has the same features as
the Polytec IVS-400.
Polytec sells direct only in Germany, France, USA and Japan, in all other markets they use
distributors. SKF does not aim to compete directly with Polytec, SKF is the only company which
can offer the whole package, SKF Laser Vibrometer and SKF Condition Monitoring products.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), Page 3 of 5

SKF Laser Vibrometer

Technical
Q1.

How does the SKF Laser Vibrometer work?

A1.

If a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency of the light is shifted
proportional to its velocity, a phenomenon referred to as the Doppler Shift. Through this
process, the velocity information becomes coded in the frequency of the light and is
subsequently used by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry to measure the vibration. A precision
interferometer and digital decoding electronics transform the frequency shift into a
voltage signal that can be processed by standard data acquisition systems. A significant
property of this technology is that the velocity information is independent of the intensity
of the reflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle works well for objects with
low reflectivity surfaces.

Q2.

How can the SKF Laser Vibrometer be calibrated?

A2.

The SKF Laser Vibrometer is easy to calibrate. It is recommended to use the calibration
exciter MSL-C 7000. Instructions are contained within the user manual.

Q3.

Do I need further accessories to perform measurements in the field?

A3.

A good-quality and stable tripod onto which the SKF Laser Vibrometer can be mounted is
required.

Q4.

What is the limit of distance, I can use the SKF Laser Vibrometer?

A4.

The sensor has a variable focus lens and it works between 90 mm and 3 meters. The use
for longer distances depends on the reflection quality of the measuring object. In special
cases it is possible to apply reflection pads, this should be discussed with CMC Steyr
directly.

Q5.

What is the frequency range of the SKF Laser Vibrometer?

A5.

The frequency range of the analog output is 0.5 Hz to 22 kHz and for the digital output it
is 0 to 22 kHz. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is especially suitable for measuring low-speed
or slow moving applications.

Q10. Can the SKF Laser Vibrometer be used for SKF gE envelope measurements?
A10. YES! You can use the laser vibrometer for gE band 1 to 3 measurements (Band 4 is not
available due to the SKF Laser Vibrometers Fmax being less than 40 kHz).
Q11. SKF gE measurements taken with the SKF Laser Vibrometer look very different
to those taken with an accelerometer why?
A11. SKF gE measurements taken with an accelerometer are measured in acceleration
whereas the SKF Laser Vibrometer measures in velocity so will naturally look different in
the same way a standard acceleration spectrum will look different when integrated to
velocity.
Q12. Can I use the standard SKF gE measurement warning and alarm levels when
analyzing SKF gE enveloping measurements taken with the SKF Laser
Vibrometer?
A12. NO! The standard guidelines are not relevant and no guidelines have been set for
velocity SKF gE enveloping.
Q13. Can the SKF Laser Vibrometer be used for measuring low speed or slow moving
parts?
A13. YES! The SKF Laser Vibrometer is especially suitable for measuring low-speed or slow
moving parts.

SKF Laser Vibrometer

MSL-7000 Series

General description
Measuring equipment employed in production environments requires a compact and
robust design suitable for the challenges met
in harsh industrial areas. The SKF Laser
Vibrometer combines a robust, integrated,
single-box design with the clear advantages
of non-contact, laser-based vibration
measurement.
With a special focus on reliable measurement results, the SKF Laser Vibrometer produces optimal results on every measurement surface, regardless of environmental
conditions. These outstanding properties
make it the first choice for process-integrated acoustic quality inspection.
The vibrometer is non-contact, wear-free
and does not require servo-mechanisms or
noise protection for performing measurements.

Condition monitoring
The SKF Laser Vibrometer completes SKFs
assortment of vibration sensors with a highend contactless velocity proportional sensor,
which can be used in combination with
condition monitoring products such as SKF
Microlog for advanced measurements and
monitoring.

The sensor enables service engineers additional capabilities for field monitoring, such
as measurements in areas difficult to reach,
in hazardous zones and on hot or on rotating
parts. Even measurement through glass is
possible.

Quality control
The SKF Laser Vibrometer measures structure-borne noise reliably and without contact. The acquired data provide valuable
information on manufacturing quality and
compliance with a products acoustic emission limits. Direct integration of the vibrometer into a production line creates a realtime quality control system that enables FAIL
decisions on the basis of structure-borne
vibration. The sensor allows easy integration
into the manufacturing line and supports
flexible resetting of manufacturing batches.

Introduction to Laser-Doppler vibrometry

If a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency of the
light is shifted proportional to its velocity, a phenomenon referred to
as the Doppler Shift. Through this process, the velocity information
becomes coded in the frequency of the light and is subsequently
used by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry to measure the vibration. A
precision interferometer and digital decoding electronics transform
the frequency shift into a voltage signal that can be processed by
standard data acquisition systems. A significant property of this technology is that the velocity information is independent of the intensity
of the reflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle works
well for objects with low reflectivity surfaces.

MSL-7000 A: Vibration sensor for end-of-line noise and vibration

testing. It can be connected to measuring electronics with digital
input (S/P-DIF). Optionally the sensor can be connected to electronics with analogue input , therefore the adapter box
MSL-P 7000 needs to be ordered.
MSL-7000 B: Vibration sensor for condition monitoring under
special conditions. Designed to be used in combination with SKF
Microlog. This version includes a robust carrying case. Optionally a
battery pack can be ordered for field measurement (operating
time approx. 45 hours).
MSL-7000 C: This version includes an additional measurement
adapter box and the FPM noise testing software (FPM = Finger
Print Method), which can be connected to a Laptop for vibration
analysis. The FPM software is an advanced vibration analysis software for detailed root cause analysis (RCA) of bearing vibrations.

Calibration
For high-accurate measurements, it is recommended to calibrate the
SKF Laser Vibrometer and the SKF Microlog with SKFs calibration
exciter MSL-C 7000. The exciter creates a fixed frequency of
159,2 Hz and 10 mm/s (RMS) amplitude.

SKF Laser Vibrometer offers non-contact vibration

measurement
The non-contact vibration sensor offers new monitoring options to engineers
in a wide range of applications, such as fans, electric motors, pumps and
household appliances.

Gothenburg, 2 December 2013: SKF has launched the SKF Laser Vibrometer MSL-7000,
a digital, integrated, single-box vibrometer that has been developed specifically for noncontact vibration measurements. The MSL-7000 offers service engineers an advanced,
flexible and robust tool for collecting vibration measurements in a large number of
different field applications.
The development of the MSL-7000 meets the need of an increasing number of
customers who wish to conduct end-of-line noise testing for their products, especially
for noise critical applications such as fans, electric motors, pumps and household
appliances. The design is easy to integrate into test set-ups and existing control
systems and covers acoustic measurements from 0.2 Hz (for slow rotations) up to 22
kHz. The MSL-7000 can also be used for mobile condition monitoring, together with the
SKF Microlog series, where it enables non-contact measurements that could not be
taken before, such as measurements on hot surfaces and through glass.
The SKF Laser Vibrometer can help customers who need advanced and flexible
vibration measurement, regardless whether they are doing retro-fitted quality
inspection or if they are doing vibration measurement in difficult locations, says Werner
Palmetshofer, General Manager Condition Monitoring Centre in Steyr, Austria.
The robust and compact, single-unit meter design offers both easy installation and
operation and because it employs non-contact measurement the MSL-7000 is
significantly less subject to wear, making it an efficient and cost-effective tool.
The MSL-7000 was developed to be used on its own for end-of-line inspection or
together with SKF condition monitoring products, such as the SKF Microlog family of
portable vibration monitoring and data collection instruments, thus offering additional
value to all customers. In addition, a package, MSL 7000C, for laptop use with the SKF
FPM Software and a mobile data acquisition card is available.

Principle of Doppler vibrometry

If a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency of

the light is shifted proportional to its velocity, a phenomenon
referred to as the Doppler Shift. Through this process, the
velocity information becomes coded in the frequency of the light
and is subsequently used by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry to
measure the vibration. A precision interferometer and digital
decoding electronics transform the frequency shift into a voltage
signal that can be processed by standard data acquisition
systems. A significant property of this technology is that the
velocity information is independent of the intensity of the
reflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle works well
for objects with low reflectivity surfaces.

SKF General Advantages

Product Range: SKFs range of products is an important strength when talking about all
competitors. SKF Condition Monitoring Centers have a wide offering (products and services)
that talks to different people within the plant and fulfills different functions and price ranges.
SKF has the ability to become a single source provider for our customers.

We offer a more complete solution, which can include training, service and support that
many of our competitors are not positioned to provide. Another competitive advantage is
the ability to provide turnkey solutions, which include databases already set up for
customers who do not know how or want to do this.

Focus on solving customer problems, not on trying to sell technology. With our Client
Needs Analysis approach, we document the areas that we believe we can help, and how
much that could mean to your plant. Focus on matching your need with our solutions.

Application knowledge: SKF has extensive application knowledge through the local sales
offices, as well as the segment teams and specialists, to draw on to solve customer
problems. By selecting a supplier with knowledge of the technology and application, our
customers can be confident that the products/services are what they really need.

Breadth of SKF group offering: We have capabilities within SKF that complement many
aspects of our customers business drawing on the five platform approach (Bearings, Seals,
Lubrication System, Services, Mechatronics).

SKFs mechanical knowledge: We have years of experience with mechanical

components, the depth of which enhances our technical capabilities in product design,
support and application knowledge. SKF name: we can help you use fewer bearings and
show you how to prolong the life of bearings.

Stability and focus of our organization: To better serve our customer, SKF has now
segment-specific teams for continued and improved focus. This is based on the large
potential growth market and important position in the overall SKF portfolio.

Support of SKF global organization: Our sales channel is knowledgeable about

technology and the application of technology, and we offer world-class training. We have
offices in all regions of the world, one of largest global suppliers of condition
monitoring/reliability systems.

2.2. INFORMATION ON LASER SAFETY

2.2.1. Safety Information
The light source of the instrument is a helium neon laser. It is important to understand that
laser light has properties different from ordinary light sources. Laser light is generally extremely intense due to the beam's low divergence. Great care should be taken when handling lasers that the direct or reflected beam do not enter the eye.
NOTE!
Please see chapter 8. for the detailed technical specifications!

The protective measures taken described in the following support compliance with the safety standards for laser class 2:
SKF generally comply with the standards IEC and EN 60825-1 or US 21 CFR 1040.10
and 1040.11 respectively except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice No. 50, dated
24 June 2007.
The optical output power of the laser beam emitted from the sensor head is less than
1 mW provided the equipment is used in the manner for which it was intended. This
means that the instrument conforms with laser class 2 and is generally very safe. It is
thereby usually assumed that the eyes are protected by prevention mechanisms including the blink reflex. This reaction offers appropriate protection under reasonable foreseeable operating conditions. This includes the use of optical instruments for observing
the laser beam. Even when optimally focused, the laser beam is not intense enough to
harm the skin.
The MSL-7000 is equipped with a beam shutter to block the laser beam during the
warm-up phase or when the vibrometer is not in use, although switched on.
The user should not attempt to open the housing of the instrument which contains the
laser unit as he could be exposed to a higher level of laser energy that is potentially
hazardous.
WARNING!
Danger from uncontrolled light emission! Use of controls or adjustments or performance of
procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.

SAFETY INFORMATION

2.2.2. Safety precautions

Pay attention to the following safety precautions when using the instrument:
Only qualified and fully trained persons should be entrusted with setting up the instrument, adjusting and operating it!
Avoid looking directly into the laser beam with the naked eye or with the aid of mirrors
or optical instruments!
WARNING!
Danger from laser light! It can be dangerous to look directly into the laser beam for any
length of time.

NOTE!
Wear suitable laser protection glasses when you have to look at the target area of the laser
beam long and hard to set it up!
Never intentionally direct the laser beam at anyone!
WARNING!
Danger from laser light! Do not use any reflective tools, watches etc. when you are working
in the beam path of the laser!
Only open the beam shutter when making measurements!
To position the sensor head, always close the beam shutter. The beam shutter should
not be opened until the sensor head has been roughly aligned and mounted securely!
The laser beam should be terminated at the end of its intended path where this is practically possible.
Instruments which are not in use should be stored in places which unauthorized persons do not have access to.

INTRODUCTION

3. INTRODUCTION
3.1. AREA OF APPLICATION AND SYSTEM SUMMARY
The industrial vibration sensor MSL-7000 is used for non-contact measurement of surface
vibrational velocities.
Fig. 3/1

The MSL-7000 is designed as an optical vibration sensor for applications in industrial processes. The robust industrial housing is suitable for harsh ambient conditions. The metrological properties of the MSL-7000 can be adapted to the respective application and
permanently saved via a serial interface with the aid of a PC. Three velocity measurement
ranges as well as high pass and low pass filters are available. In addition, a digital signal
improvement can be switched on which can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio
under difficult optical conditions.

3.2. OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The laser vibrometer use the principle of the heterodyne interferometer to acquire the
characteristics of mechanical vibrations or transient motion processes (refer to section
9.1.). With this type of interferometer, a high frequency carrier signal is generated on the
photo detector with the aid of a Bragg cell. To make the vibration measurement, the beam
of a helium neon laser is pointed at the vibrating object and scattered back from it. The velocity amplitude of a vibrating object generates a frequency modulation of the laser light due
to the Doppler effect. This modulation is recovered in the signal processing unit with the aid
of suitable demodulators (or decoders). A schematic layout of the signal path is shown as a
diagram in Fig. 3/2. The velocity information is recovered from the frequency modulation of
the Doppler signal.

SKF Condition Monitoring Centre Steyr

11

INTRODUCTION

MSL-7000 Series

Fig. 3/2

In the MSL, the optics and the signal processing unit are inside the housing. The demodulation of the Doppler signal is purely based on a digital process. In contrast to the conventional vibrometers which use analog, this then means that the measurement accuracy is
virtually independent of aging and environmental influences. State-of-the-art DSP technology makes it possible to realize excellent measurement system characteristics, despite
the compact design and minimal energy consumption.
The correction of signal interferences, which occur due to short-term failures of the optical
received signal (dropouts), is also based on this DSP technology. Activating this digital signal
improvement (Signal Enhancement), in many cases under difficult optical conditions, a significant reduction of interfering impulses (spikes) in the vibration signal can be attained.
By using a serial interface proven in digital audio technology, the output signal can be fed
into the digital inputs of modern recording devices or signal analyzers without any loss of
accuracy. For the conventional type of signal processing, an analog signal output with 24 bit
amplitude resolution is also available.

4.4. INSTALLATION
4.4.1. Assembly
Laser vibrometer

The MSL-7000 has several threaded holes on the side and on the underside to mount the
laser vibrometer:
Two mounting threads M6 to mount on cooling surfaces (refer also to section 8.2.4.)
One mounting thread 1/4" to mount onto a camera tripod, onto a tripod.

Tripod assembly

Before attempting to mount the laser vibrometer, all locking mechanisms of the tripod, particularly screws, should be checked to make sure they are tight. Loose screws may cause
the tripod to be unstable and possibly collapse.
Proceed with the assembly as follows:
* Assemble the tripod as described in the assembly instructions provided by the manufacturer (recommended is tripod of MANFROTTO).
* Then mount the corresponding head onto the tripod as described in the assembly
instructions provided by the manufacturer.
* Set the laser vibrometer onto the head and fix it using the central 1/4" screw.
* Every time if you want to remove the laser vibrometer from the head, hold it during
undoing the 1/4" screw.
* Keep the assembly instruction for the head in a safe place.

4.4.2. Electrical connection

The user has to make the electrical connections for the supply voltage and the signals himself.
WARNING!
Danger from electrical current! This work may only be carried out by qualified personnel!

NOTE!
Earth potential differences between the place the MSL-7000 is installed and the signal
processing system can cause hum at line frequency (50 Hz and harmonics) in the signal
path. In this case, it is necessary to install the MSL-7000 with electrical insulation.
Pay attention to the following information when selecting the power supply, the connecting
cable and the signal level display.
Power supply

20

Only use good-quality, stabilized power supplies with a nominal voltage of 12 V and a
minimum current of 1,25 A or suitable batteries. The insulation standards of the power
supply has to fulfil the requirements for SELV circuits according to EN 60950.

SKF Condition Monitoring Centre Steyr

MSL-7000 Series

FIRST STEPS

CAUTION!
Danger from too high voltages! The supply voltage must not exceed 15 V, even temporary!
This could otherwise destroy the MSL.

NOTE!
The supply voltage must not fall below 11 V! Otherwise the MSL-7000 could work incorrectly.

Take suitable precautions against overvoltage on the supply line.

Pay attention to the electrical safety requirements in section 2.3.
If you are using switch mode power supplies, high-frequency interference signals can
superimpose in the signal path. In this case, you should use additional filters.
The minus pin of the power supply may not be connected to protective earth (protective
conductor) as otherwise interference voltages can enter the signal path which is normally grounded.
Signal level display

You can use every high-impedance voltmeter with a measurement range of up to 5 V or a

corresponding optical indicator as signal level display.

MAKING MEASUREMENTS

5. MAKING MEASUREMENTS
5.1. START-UP
To make a measurement with the MSL, proceed as follows:
Preparing

* Make sure that the beam shutter on the laser vibrometer is closed.
* Position the laser vibrometer roughly so that its laser beam aperture points in the
direction of the object under investigation. If possible, position the laser vibrometer at
an optimal stand-off distance to the object.
You will find information on optimal stand-off distances in section 5.3.
* Mount the MSL-7000 with the mounting threads (for dimensions refer to sections
8.2.4.) vibration-free in comparison to the vibration to be measured. If there is an earth
potential difference between the place the MSL-7000 is installed and the signal
processing system, you have to install the MSL-7000 electrically insulated.
* Switch the mains supply on.
The MSL-7000 is now ready to operate. Laser light is not yet emitted as the beam shutter is still closed.
CAUTION!
Danger from incorrect wiring! Before you switch the MSL-7000 on, check whether the cabling is correct!

For easy positioning of the laser beam, a tripod combined with a joystick head is recommended.

Measuring

Before now opening the beam shutter, remember the information on laser safety provided in section 2.2.!

* Open the beam shutter. To do so, turn the corrugated ring on the front lens to the left
when looking in the direction of the emitted laser beam.
The laser beam is now emitted from the laser vibrometer.
* Focus the laser beam on the measurement surface using the focusing ring.

MAKING MEASUREMENTS

MSL-7000 Series

5.2. SELECTING SUITABLE SETTINGS

The settings necessary for a measurement are limited to selecting the velocity measurement range (VELO) and the low pass filter (LP), as well as setting the high pass filter (HP).
You can change the settings permanently in the MSL-7000 with the aid of a PC and the Vibrometer Panel software (refer to section 9.2.). On this, the cabling is described in section
4.4.2.
NOTE!
The changed settings are immediately effective and also remain to be conserved if the interface cable is disconnected and the MSL-7000 is switched off.
The analog measurement signal is available at pin7 of the main connection CON1.

5.2.1. Measurement range

The MSL-7000 offers three velocity measurement ranges, whose scaling factors for the analog output signal are 5 mm/s/V, 25 mm/s/V and 125 mm/s/V. When using the digital output, however, the full scale value is needed as a reference for the numerical value
transmitted. If you multiply the scaling factors by four, corresponding to the output voltage
swing of 4V, you get the respective full scale values in mm/s (20 mm/s, 100 mm/s and 500
mm/s). The measurement range is set via the Vibrometer Panel software.
To optimize the signal-to-noise ratio, as a general rule the smallest possible measurement
range should be used which is not overloaded under the given measurement conditions.
When using the filters, it is also possible that an internal saturation outside the frequency
pass band has occurred. Therefore you have to check the correct setting of the measurement range with the filters being switched off (refer to section 9.2.3.1.).

5.2.2. Low pass filter

The MSL-7000 is equipped with a switchable, digital low pass filter to limit the bandwidth
of the measurement signal. With the three cutoff frequencies 1 kHz, 5 kHz and 22 kHz which
can be selected, high-frequency noise levels can be suppressed. The cutoff frequency of the
low pass filter is set via the Vibrometer Panel software.
The digital filter principle (FIR type) realizes almost ideal filter properties. With linear phase,
the amplitude error remains less than -1 dB up to the given cutoff frequency and the
changeover to the stop band has a steep frequency roll-off (approx. -120 dB/ dec).

5.2.3. High pass filter

To suppress low-frequency background vibrations, the MSL-7000 has got a switchable high
pass filter of 3rd order Butterworth type with a cutoff frequency of 100Hz (-3dB). The high
pass filter is switched on or off via the Vibrometer Panel software.
For technical reasons this filter has been realized in conventional analog technology and
therefore only has an effect on the analog voltage output. The high pass filter can always
be used beneficially for analog signal acquisition if you are working with high-level background interference e.g. caused by machine vibrations when a relatively small signal is to
be measured at high frequencies. Under these conditions please take care of the internal
saturation of the selected measurement range (refer also to section 5.2.1.).
Attention has to be paid to the following properties for the high pass filter:
The changeover from the pass band to the stop band occurs with a more gradual frequency roll-off (-60 dB/dec) than with the low pass filter.

30

SKF Condition Monitoring Centre Steyr

MSL-7000 Series

MAKING MEASUREMENTS

Near the cutoff frequency a significant amplitude error occurs (refer to Fig. 5/1).
For frequencies > 140 Hz, the amplitude error is < -0.5 dB (-5%).
Fig. 5/1 ... Amplitude and phase frequency response of a 3rd order Butterworth high pass
filter

The lower graph in Fig. 5/1 represents the phase frequency response. The 360 phase jump
can only be seen on the diagram for presentation reasons.

5.2.4. Digital signal improvement (Signal Enhancement)

The MSL-7000 has got a special signal processing function which can significantly reduce
the disturbing influence of optical signal dropouts in the output signal. Dropouts occur if no
light is scattered back from certain points due to the surface structure, or extinctions are
generated through optical interference effects, the so-called speckles. The period of dropouts is generally brief in comparison to the cycle duration of the vibration signal.
Therefore, in the output signal of the vibrometer dropouts appear as short interfering impulses (spikes) which are superimposed to the vibration signal. Often such spikes occur periodically as the laser beam hits the same positions on the surface again and again in the
course of the vibratory motion. Depending on frequency and strength of occurrence, spikes
can make the correct analysis of vibration signals difficult or completely impossible. In particular, they can lead to overloading of the downstream signal acquisition devices. Using the
low pass filter in the MSL-7000, spikes can be slightly smoothed if the signal frequency allows this.
A much more efficient procedure to reduce dropout distortion is realized in the MSL-7000
by using a special digital signal processing method. In contrast to conventional filters, it does
not affect the frequency bandwidth of the vibrometer and has no influence on undisturbed
harmonic signals. In Fig. 5/2 at the top, you will see a raw vibration signal with one single
spike and below the same signal after using the digital signal improvement (Signal Enhancement). In the disturbed signal period, only a weak change of the signal shape is visible
after the correction while the undisturbed periods remain unaffected. With non-sinusoidal
measurement signals, in particular with short pulses, Signal Enhancement, however, can

SKF Condition Monitoring Centre Steyr

31

MAKING MEASUREMENTS

MSL-7000 Series

cause measurement errors. In such cases, the effect should be tested by switching the function on and off.
Fig. 5/2 ... Effect of the digital signal improvement in the output signal
Vibration signal with spike

Vibration signal with signal

enhancement

Suppressing spikes in the time signal affects positively a spectral signal evaluation via FFT
as well. Particularly in the higher frequency range, noise will be lowered which results from
frequent spikes in the frequency spectrum.
In delivery status, basically Signal Enhancement is switched off except for the settings are
changed on customer request when ordering. At the analog velocity output and in the main
channel (left) of the digital S / P-DIF interface, the raw signal is output. Only in the auxiliary
channel (right) of the S/P-DIF interface, the digitally improved velocity signal is available.
If Signal Enhancement is switched on via the Vibrometer Panel software, the analog output
and the left S/P-DIF channel carry the digitally improved velocity signal. Then in comparison, you can monitor the raw signal in the right S/P-DIF channel. Both S /P-DIF channels
transfer the velocity signal with identical phasing so that the effect of signal improvement
of single spikes becomes significantly apparent.

5.3. SETTING UP THE OPTIMAL STAND-OFF DISTANCE

5.3.1. Coherency between stand-off distance and visibility maximum
The light source of the MSL-7000 is a helium neon laser. This is a multi-mode laser in
which, depending on the laser cavity length, one or a maximum of two modes can exist. The
laser cavity length can vary caused by small changes in temperature. Thus the laser changes
between the one-mode and the two-mode state. If two modes exist, interference effects
cause the intensity of the resulting optical signal varying periodically with the stand-off distance.
The diagram in Fig. 5/3 shows the signal level depending on the stand-off distance. In the
special case of having two modes with equal magnitude (black line), you have the strongest
loss of signal level if the object is located inside a visibility minimum. But generally there are
two modes of different magnitudes. In this case the signal level is hardly fluctuating (gray
line). If only one mode exists, the signal level is always maximum, independent from the
stand-off distance (dashed gray line).

32

SKF Condition Monitoring Centre Steyr

MSL-7000 Series

MAKING MEASUREMENTS

The stand-off distances at which the signal level is maximal are called visibility maxima. The
visibility maxima recur every 138 mm corresponding to the laser cavity length.
In practice, it is not usually necessary to search for the visibility maximum as the MSL-7000
is even sensitive enough to make a measurement close to the minimum. A visibility minimum is indicated during the warm-up phase by periodic fluctuation of the optical signal level. If you need an optimal resolution and sensitivity for small objects, you should select a
stand-off distance close to the visibility maximum for the MSL-7000.
Fig. 5/3 ... Coherency between stand-off distance and visibility maximum

5.3.2. Stand-off distances

For the MSL-7000 with variable focus, the stand-off distance is measured from the front
edge of the retaining ring for the front lens (refer to Fig. 8/1).
The optimal stand-off distances are:
Optimal stand-off distance = 96 mm + (n x l) mm
n
l

0; 1; 2; 3; ....
138 mm

That is, for l = 138 mm the optimal stand-off distances are at:
96 mm; 234 mm; 372 mm; 510 mm; etc. (refer also to section 8.2.5.)

OPERATION

6. OPERATION
6.1. SWITCHING ON AND OFF
If you do not use the junction box, please pay attention to the information on the electric
connection in section 4.4.2. and switch the MSL-7000 correspondingly on.

6.2. BLOCKING THE LASER BEAM

The MSL-7000 is equipped with a beam shutter. This can be used to block the laser beam
without switching off the laser. This keeps the system in thermal equilibrium.
The beam shutter is the corrugated ring on the front lens. To block the laser beam, turn the
corrugated ring on the front lens to the left when looking in the direction of the emitted laser
beam.
WARNING!
Danger from laser light! Only open the beam shutter when you are making measurements!

6.3. FOCUSING THE LASER BEAM

For the MSL-7000 with variable focus, the stand-off distance can be adjusted by using the
focusing ring. Before focusing the laser beam, make sure that the clamping screw on the
focusing ring is undone (refer to section 6.4.).
When looking in the direction of the emitted laser beam, focus the laser beam as follows:
Focus on infinity: Turn to the right
Focus close-up: Turn to the left
Please pay attention to the information on optimal stand-off distances provided in section
5.3.

6.4. FIXING THE FOCUS POSITION

With the MSL-7000 with variable focus, you can fix the focus position by locking the focusing ring using the clamping screw. To do so, first focus the laser beam and then hand-tighten the clamping screw with the provided Allen key size 1,5 mm.

6.5. USING THE SIGNAL LEVEL DISPLAY

The signal level display in the program helps you to optimize the focus of the laser beam.

6.6. MEASUREMENT SIGNAL OUTPUT

Analog signal

For the analog signal, you can switch on Signal Enhancement in the Vibrometer Panel software (refer also to section 9.2.3.3.). Thus, the digitally improved signal is available at the
analog output.
NOTE!
Please pay attention that Signal Enhancement is not switched on for the analog output as
default except for the settings are changed on customer request when ordering!

Digital signal

The measurement signal is available at the Triax jack DIGITAL OUT on the back of the laser
vibrometer as a digital signal in S/ P-DIF format.
In doing so, the left channel is defined as the main channel which carries the same signal
content as the analog output. Also the switching status of the function Signal Enhancement
is referred to this channel. In the right channel, for the purpose of comparison, the improved
signal is available here with Signal Enhancement being switched off, whereas with Signal
Enhancement being switched on, the original signal is output here.

6.7. MEASUREMENT RANGE AND FILTER

On delivery, the measurement range and the filters of the MSL-7000 are set to standard
values or customized. These settings are identified on a label at the bottom side of the instrument.
At any time, you are able to change these settings and store them permanently with the aid
of the interface cable and the Vibrometer Panel software (refer to section 9.2.).
NOTE!
If you change the settings, the label must be replaced by a new one with the current settings.

The resulting intensity e.g. on a photo detector varies with the phase difference between
the two beams according to the equation

The phase difference is a function of the optical path difference L between the two beams
according to

whereby is the laser wavelength.

If one of the two beams is scattered back from a moving object (the object beam), the path
difference becomes a function of time L = L (t). The interference fringe pattern moves on
the detector and the displacement of the object can be determined using directional sensitive counting of the passing fringe pattern.
The velocity component in the direction of the object beam is a function of the path difference L according to

For a constant movement v

applies with

Thus a constant movement of the object causes a frequency shift at the object beam which
is called Doppler frequency fD. Superimposing object beam and internal reference beam, i.e.
two electromagnetic waves with slightly different frequencies, generates a beat frequency
at the detector which is equal to the Doppler frequency. The ratio (see equation above) to
determine the velocity is, however, independent of its sign. The direction of the velocity can
be determined by introducing an additional fixed frequency shift fB in the interferometer to
which the Doppler frequency is added with the correct sign.
Thus the resulting frequency at the detector fmod is given by

Interferometers of this type which are directional sensitive are described as heterodyne.
