CASE 6

Issue: To accept the offer of donating one of Mr. Delacruz kidney to save a scientist that can
cure many diseases
Topic: Mr. Delacruz is a 50 year old businessman. In one of his visits for check-up in the
hospital he was offered one million to donate one of his kidneys to a 25 year old scientist. This
scientist is working on genetic engineering and is about to make an outstanding recovery that
will cure many of the diseases in the humankind. By accepting the offer, hes life span will
shorten and will not able to do some activities. He can also save his business that is in danger
of bankruptcy by accepting the one million. If he did not accept the offer, the possibility of cure
for the many diseases will also die along with the scientist.
Thesis: Accept the offer of donating one of his kidneys to save the scientist
Main points:
1. Greater good/ Utilitarianism- If Mr. Delacruz accept the offer he was given, he will not only
be benefitted financially but also, he can help the humankind. By donating his organ, he will not
just prolonging the life of the scientist but hes also, in a way, giving those people who have
diseases a chance to be cured and have hopes. The greater good is what matters most. Even if
Delacruz donate his kidney he still has another one to sustain his life. He will not die by doing
such action; by giving one organ hes giving people hope in life.
2. Compassion- It is said that compassion is the highest virtue in Christianity. It is compassion
that will let Mr. Delacruz give hes organ for the scientist to benefit the majority. It is the
sensitivity to what others need and the capability to think of the welfare of other people before
oneself.
3. The end justifies the mean- Though what he will do can be considered as wrong in some
aspects, what is more important is the result that can be yielded in the said action. Delacruz will
donate his kidney which can potentially shorten his life span but in return, many lives can be
saved. Many hopeless people can have a chance to prolong their life and fulfill their respective
purpose in life. The end which is the curing of many diseases can overweigh the thought that
Delacruz gave his organ, shortening his own life.

Conclusion:
Therefore, Mr. Delacruz should accept the offer since it can benefit the majority of
humankind. By giving one of his kidneys hes giving hope to those people who have terminal
diseases. Also, he is doing the humankind a favor by giving one of his organs, which can lead to
a short lifespan for him, since by doing so he will not only save the life of the scientist but also
those people that the scientist can cure. It is a sign of compassion; compassion to the
humankind and those in need and helpless. Lastly, what he will do is right since the result is
good; it will help many people. Though their means can be considered wrong in some aspect,
still the act I good since the end result is good.

COUNTER ATTACK
Thesis: Mr. Delacruz should not accept the offer
Main points:
1. Three determinants of Morality- If Mr. Delacruz accept the offer and donate his kidney to
the scientist, it can be considered as wrong basing to the three determinants of morality. Though
the intention is good and the circumstance calls for desperate actions, the action on the other
hand is still wrong. Therefore, the act is wrong since the three determinants should be perfect
for an action to be considered morally good. Technically, they are buying Delacruzs kidney
since there is money involved. It is also legally and ethically wrong to buy someones kidney
regardless if it can benefit people.
2. Natural Law- By giving his organ to the scientist, they are manipulating and interrupting the
order of nature. Delacruzs lifespan will shorten after the operation which contradicted the nature
and life per se.
3. Oppression of Choices- Though having a tough time trying to save his business, Mr.
Delacruz did not think of resorting to selling his kidney just to have money. By giving him the
offer, they are narrowing his choices in a way that they are giving him an easier way out. They
are hindering him to grow as a person and find a decent solution to his problem. At the same
time, they are appealing to his conscience since there are many people involved that can be
cured.

Conclusion:
Mr. Delacruz should not accept the offer since the act is morally basing to the three
determinants of morality. Though the intention and circumstance is justifiable, the action is
wrong for there is money involved which means, technically they are buying Delacruzs kidney.
Whats more, it is a manipulation to the order of nature and the natural way a person should die.
Shortening the lifespan of Delacruz contradicts the order of nature. Also, theyve narrowed the
choices of Delacruz in dealing with his problem of bankruptcy. They are giving him an easier
way out, an option that did not even crossed his mind since it is unethical especially with his
age.
