Introduction
As we all know what a submarine is, but anyway we will give an introduction to
the name submarine.
We begin the process by choosing an appropriate design for the sub. Design
selection was not an easy task so it took a lot of time. Our objective was to design a
simplest mechanical structure that has greater mechanical stability at all possible
conditions. It took one day to design the
whole thing. All of our team members
contribute in the design process.
The length of the submarine is 50 inches and
diameter is 6.5 inches. Now that is very big
for a model but we want to ensure the
maximum space available for the batteries,
motors, ballast tank and other electronic
equipment. We are using a pressurized air
ballast tank because it is suitable for a model
and easy to fabricate.
We are using pro- e wildfire 5.0 for 3-D
modeling of the submarine. It is very easy to use and the design features it offers
are very compatible for our
design. It is also used for 2-D
drawing of the sub.
Calculations
Some of the calculations we
have done are presented here.
Volume Occupied
By Submarine:Volume of the bow (front part)
=110.62in3
Center of gravity of the submarine:The center of gravity of the submarine lies at a point G (25.71, 0.195).We simply
use statics to find the center of gravity of the submarine.
Fabrication of the
Submarine
The selection of material of the submarine
was quite difficult. At first we had no idea of
selection of the material. Then we took some
advice from our teachers and decided to use
fiber glass mat to construct the submarine
because of its strength under pressure. It can
bear huge amount of tensile and compression
stresses. We bought it from a shop and the
owner helped us as to how to use the fiber glass. We came to know
that a substance called G.R.P is used to harden the
fiber glass.
First we made a mould of the whole submarine via
thermo pole. The mould was then cut in half and
covered with vinyl sheet. A coat of wax was then
applied on the two piece mould. It helped us by
providing a sealing through which the mould
could not stick to the fiber. After applying the
fiber and the G.R.P, we waited for it to dry. It
completely solidifies in one day. Then we applied a rubber sealing between the tow
pieces of body and joined it via nuts and bolts.
Further the inner part of the submarine was taken into account for construction.
Now the ballast tank was constructed with the use of thermo pole. The circuits and
other electronic equipment were mounted on the submarine. We used a 12 volt
high torque D.C motor for the propulsion of the submarine.
Now the hydroplanes and rudder of the submarine was built via thermo pole.
Finally a coat of aerosol paint was applied on the whole submarine.
Applications:1) In military.
2) In searching of marine life.
3) As a practical course work for marine engineering.
