WINTER MOT AND SERVICING

Your top tips for a safer journey

WITH winter upon us, weve
already been through the odd
cold snap bitter enough to
make conditions treacherous
on the roads.
Following a few simple
pieces of advice will limit
your chances of a winterrelated mishap, even if they
wont bring spring around
any sooner.
PACK SOME ESSENTIALS
Consider whether your
journey is essential but, if
it is, be sure to carry safety
equipment.
A first aid kit and tow rope,
spare bulbs and a torch are
valuable additions in the
darker months, as are some
de-icer, a blanket and a hot
drink in case you have to stop
for a long period.
Make sure your mobile is
fully charged before you set
off.
BE PREPARED
When its time to go, make
sure your car is ready, too.
Check fluid levels and be sure
to use the correct concentration of anti-freeze.
Also check tyres are properly inflated and in good condition with plenty of tread.
Batteries can be susceptible
to the cold have it checked
by a professional. The law

states that all windows and

lights must be free of obstructions, so clearing a gap
in the windscreen wont do.
Use a proper scraper, deicer or tepid water too hot
and you risk damaging the
cars glass and seals.

10 WINTER DRIVING TIPS

1. Equip your car with basic safety kit including warm
clothing
2. Pack a hot drink for a long trip in case youre forced to
stop
3. Keep your cars fluid levels and tyres in check
4. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before
you set off
5. Use major roads for your journey, as they will have
been cleared/gritted
6. In bad weather, tell someone your itinerary in case you
get delayed
7. Keep your distance from the car in front
8. If your car starts to slide dont panic brake
9. Use your lights responsibly and cancel fog lights when
theyre not needed

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW

If theres one thing you
should always remember; its
to use your lights. Whether
its raining, snowing or fog
has reduced your visibility,
switching them on could be a
life-saver.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
Braking distances will be
longer on slippery surfaces,
so increase the gap to the car
in front.
Where theres a lot of standing water its wise to keep
your speed down.
You can reduce the risk of
aquaplaning by gently taking
your foot off the accelerator
if you hit a patch of water.
Resist the temptation to
slam on the brakes, it will
only compound the problem.
