from the Movie Rocket Singh Sales Man of the Year

Introduction

The movie begins


with the introduction of
Ranbeer
Kapoor
as
Harpreet Singh Bedi. He
has just graduated from
college and is enthusiastic
about being a salesman. He
lands up a job as a
computer salesman in a multinational company AYS Solutions. In no
time he realizes that his principles of operating with honesty and
integrity were considered obsolete. He is looked down when he
complains about a person asking for bribe to install his company
computers. Thereafter he is prohibited from contacting any prospective
clients. It becomes clear that his boss wants him out. During this time he
gets a slipup from a colleague to visit a prospective client. The client is a
startup and cannot afford the company price for two computers. At this
point Harpreet offers to try and cut down the prices. He finds that his
company overcharges the customers. Harpreet then assembles the
computers with the help of one of his colleagues. He uses a wholesaler
as supplier. The final payment, he however, bills it on the name of
Rocket Sales Corporation. Thus, the story of a new Harpreet Singh Bedi
and Rocket Sales Corporation starts.

integrity. He is a B. Com. graduate with a passing mark, who
with difficulty becomes a salesman at a well-known Tofu fill his
dream he went to his very fiAYS,.

His grandpa is caring and decent. He values Harpreet and is


supportive. He is angry at his grandson for his illegal act. But
still he understands the innocence in the act and helps Harpreet

overcome his guilt. He motivates Harpreet to live a life of


honesty.

As the owner of AYS
solutions, he believes in getting the
work done by hook or by crook.
With no regards to values like
honesty and truthfulness he pursues
his greed energetically. He does not
flinch in offering bribes from
watchmen to managers. He
therefore, treats Harpreet as a dumb
fool who will never rise. When he returns Rocket sales Corp.
back to Harpreet, it seems he has a side which he had suppressed
for long. He shows due respect to Harpreet for what he is and
maybe realizes his mistakes.

Koena
She is the receptionist who wants to be
known as more than a thing of attraction.
She is concerned about Harpreet when he
is out casted by his team because of his
values. She shows compassion for people
in general. But is also cunning and
understands the hidden motives of the
people involved and acts accordingly.

Giri First partner


This character Computer
Engineer in his office and trusts no one.
He deceits for profit and is concerned
with money, from Rocket sales or AYS.
But he is a man of his word, can be
trusted and does not betray any of his
people. His ethicality is a grey area as he neither seems very bad
nor very good.

Chhotelal Misra
He is the waiter who is not confident about
his abilities. His sense of worth is low. But
as a person he is decent, modest, honest,
polite and faithful. He is neither an
ambitious man nor is greedy. He is ethical
and a decent person.

What is organizational behavior and why is it


important?
Organizational Behavior Is a
study relates to the expected behavior of an
individual in a particular work situation. Its
importance tells us Rocket Singh start his
work with team mates and shared high
moral. Being A Lead he behaves in the
same healthy manner and others were just
following the same. At one point of time
HP warn his technical associate to behalf
well with receptionist.

Explain
As a newcomer in a new office, the total
environment was very uncomfortable and unfavorable to
him.The main thing was that the sales manager was so
much unfriendly. Harpreet Singh was just neglected by
him throughout the interview. To fulfill his dream he went
to his very fito sell a pencil at the rate Rs.100 without
rubber. But he had to convince that the rubber was with
the pencil. Harpreet Singh started to sell the pencil. He
said this is a new pencil with detachable perfumed
rubber and with very hard lead which cannot be broken.
The sales manager did not satisfy. Harpreet Singh tried his
level best to satisfy the manager but he failed to do so.
Actually the manager didnt want to recruit him as a
salesman for the company.

2.What is the nature of managerial work?

Explain
We can see that Rocket Sales
Corporation treated people as
partners not employees. As
they almost have same
designations and share of profit
they feel the corporation as their own. Rocket sales give
importance on the need and want of the people within the
organization. Employee friendly environment was ensured here.
Furthermore, cultural assimilation is the most important factor
for two organizations to merge. The culture of corruption and
bribery at AYS could not merge with Rockets culture of
integrity, hard work and honesty

3. Contrasted the experience, interpretation,


and the expression of emotions across
cultures.
Emotion:
Emotion is intense
feelings that are directed
at someone or something.
Its caused by specific
event. Emotion is very
brief in duration. Emotion
usually accompanied by
facial expression and its
action oriented. Emotion
have some specific form such as happiness, surprise, anger,
sadness ,fear, disgust, bored etc. Some of these positive
emotions have positive impact on individual. On the other hand
the negative emotions influence an individual negatively.

Dimensions of emotion:
There are two dimensions of emotion
that are:
Positive emotion:
Positive emotion affects a person positively. Some positive
emotions are happy, elated, calm, content etc.
Negative emotion:
Negative emotion affects a person negatively regarding
something. Some of the negative emotions are disgust, upset,
sad, bored etc.
Interpretation
The act of interpreting, elucidation, and
explication is called interpretation. Every employee has good
qualities of Rising in career. Recognizing the skills is an
important task. Here he finds the skills of Technical person to
peon and from immediate boss to telephone operator. So the
Receptionist at AYS becomes the Customer Relations Executive
at Rocket, while the chai-walla becomes a computer assembler.

Mood

Feelings that are longer


lasting than emotions and
have no clear starting point
of formation.
Hearing that the head of the
corporation said that the
company would not run with
mark sheet it would run with
balance sheet. At last, the head of the corporation suggested the
sales manager to recruit Harpreet Singh as a salesman for AYS
because Harpreet Singh was able to sell Rs.2 pencil as
Rs.2000000 Mercedes. The head of the corporation also said
This boy is able to sell Rs.2 pencil as Rs.2000000 Mercedez.
So, he has some special quality for becoming a sales man. By
that Harpreet Singh got his dream job.

4. Identified the sources of emotions and


moods.
Harpreet Singh tried his level best
to satisfy the manager but he failed to
do so. Actually the manager didnt
want to recruit him as a salesman for
the company. When the head of the
corporation came the sales manager
said that Harpreet was not good
enough to be a sales man and his
education background was not good.
Hearing that the head of the
corporation said that the company
would not run with mark sheet it
would run with balance sheet. Harpreet became very
sentimental and show negative mood for some time.

Behavioral aspects of customer relationship


Rocket sales have very flexible
customer policy.1.
Maintained some major principals
when dealing with client , such as:
Delivery on date
No false commitment to client
Honesty
Anytime service2.

Principles of Ethical Leadership


According to the principals of ethical leadership, any leader
should have these five qualities imbibed into him to serve
ethically and justly.
Firstly, a leader should always respect others and point of
view of others whether he agrees with them or not.
Secondly, he should not only serve self-interest but also
interest of others. A leader has to follow utilitarian theory
of ethics.
Thirdly, he must show justice while taking decisions and
making choices, as the consequences of his choices in most
cases will not be limited to himself.
Fourthly, a leader should always show honesty and should
be show integrity in whatever he does, if his followers will
believe that he is unethical than the organization will not
sustain.
Lastly, he should look to build community and for the
welfare of community which is dependent on me.

Analysis of Movie Rocket Singh Salesman of


the year
The analysis of the movie will be divided into four parts based
on the theories of ethics being used, i.e., the movie would be
analyzed on the basis of theory of egoism, utilitarian theory,
theory of distributive justice and theory of ethics. The movie has
appealed to the viewers as being light and refreshing. The movie
would be analyzed on the basis of the ethical theories stated
above. Some of the analysis may seem to contradict but certain
ethical theories do contradict under different circumstances.

Analysis on the basis of Theory of Egoism


Harpreet Singh did what he felt was just. Like all, his feelings of just and
unjust were determined primarily on his life experiences. People are
taught certain basic values. They use these values as base and build upon
them as they learn from their life experiences. These secondary values
may be entirely different from the basic values if the experiences are
very stressful. On the basis of his values, Harpreet Singh acted in his
interest. Similarly, other characters in the movie acted according to their
interests. This theory accepts their actions as being right if others would
have done so in the same position. Assuming everyone to be sane,
everyone would have done the same thing under same circumstances.
Hence, the judgment part is limited. Harpreet Singh and everyone else
are thus acting ethical in their part.

Analysis on the Basis of Utilitarian Theory


Utilitarianism is the ideas that the moral worth of an action is
determined solely by its utility in providing happiness or
pleasure as summed among all sentient beings. According to this
theory, even when Harpreet Singh had opened a company in his
bosses company, nobody other than his small group knew of it.
Thus summing up the feelings of all the people involved, who
knew of the plot, the feeling turns out to be pleasant. It thus may
seem ethical if no one else knows about the situation. This is so
because this theory deals with the opinion of others or the
interest of all. Also, from another point of view, the customers
were happy with the services of Rocket Sales Corporation. The
employees of Rocket Sales Corporation were happy with the
progress of their company. Except for the interest of AYS
services, the interests of everyone else were being served. Thus
utility in providing pleasure or happiness sums up as positive.
Hence, according to this theory, the act of the main protagonist
may seem ethical in nature.

Analysis on the Basis of Distributive Justice

According to this theory,


there is equality of burden and
benefit in the society. Starting
Rocket
Sales
Corporation
under AYS solutions may seem
beneficial to some. If everyone
does the same, then it becomes more burdensome than
beneficial. Such practices, thus may seem just, but are
actually as unethical as the practices of bribing to win
contracts followed by AYS solutions. Thus on the basis of
distributive justice theory the act portrayed in the movie is
unethical.

Analysis on the Basis of Virtue Ethics


The components of virtue theory are:
7 virtues faith, hope, charity, courage, justice,
temperance, wisdom
7 contrary virtues humility, kindness, abstinence,
chastity, patience, liberty, diligence
7 sins vanity, covetousness, lust, wrath, envy, gluttony,
sloth.
The character Harpreet Singh had all 7 virtues and he
seemed free from greed or envy. He started the business
with intentions of doing good to people in general. Only
the act was performed in violation of law. On the basis of
these virtues the protagonist seems virtuous and kind
hearted. On the other hand, his boss, manager of AYS had
the qualities of vanity, greed, wrath, envy in him. He
himself had been operating business by means of bribes.
He thus does not seem virtuous.

Analysis on the Basis of Marketing Ethics

Marketing ethics is the area


of applied ethics which deals with the
moral principles behind the operation
and regulation of marketing. Some
areas of marketing ethics (ethics of
advertising and promotion) overlap
with media ethics. Marketing
necessarily commits at least one of
three wrongs:

Ethical theories based on Self Interest vs


Interest for Others
Theories based on concern for self and concerns for others are
mainly three theories, which are different from each other. If
concern for self is high and concern for society is low than such
a theory is considered as Ethical Egoism. In this theory,
individual always comes ahead of the organization. In Utilitarian
theory, both individual and society concerns have to be
balanced. It is considered to be the idealist theory. While, in the
theory of Altruism society always comes ahead of the individual
and personal gains are not as important as gain of society as a
whole.

Damaging personal autonomy.


The victim of marketing in this case is the intended buyer whose
right to self-determination is infringed. Causing harm to
competitors. Excessively fierce competition and unethical
marketing tactics are especially associated with saturated
markets. Manipulating social values. The victim in this case is
society as a whole, or the environment as well. The argument is
that marketing promotes consumerism and waste. See also:
influenza, ethical consumerism, anti-consumerism. In the movie,
AYS solutions have marketed its product as the best. It has made
itself a reputation of a market leader, a company which sells the
best quality products. In actual, its products are not above market
standards. In one scene, the repair person intentionally burns the
circuit board so that he can charge his client for a burnt circuit
board. In this way they will earn more. Marketing for own personal
interest, to influence peoples opinion and mislead them is
unethical. But it is generally followed by almost all companies.
The motive to do business is to earn profit. Many companies
which are concerned brands, are selling products which harm the
society in general. Be it carbonated drinks, cigarettes, alcohol or
even unhealthy foods. They survive on the pretext that consumers
want it. But they drive demands with their advertisements and
branding. Govt. cannot take a stand because they are not
considered as unethical as drugs etc by society. They thus
survive in the good faith of people in general, giving them
incomplete information.

6. Contrasted the evidence for and against


the existence of emotional intelligence
Dissatisfaction is
destructive in two ways, if the
employee exit or neglect the work. In
case of AYS, employees were
dissatisfied with the overall managing
system and behavior. All of them
were maltreated in some situation. For this reason, they were not
loyal to the company and job. It reduced the companys quality
service to the customers, started giving less respect to the other
employees and the superiors. They were neglecting the
responsibilities continuously. But they did not resign because of
scarcity of any other good job. After that the boss of AYS
knows the activity of Rocket limited, He catches the Harpreet
and insulted him which is the contrasted the evidence for and
against the existence of emotional intelligence.

Job Satisfaction at service 1

Harpreet Singh
was ecstatic on that day when he got
his first visiting card. As being a sales
man was his dream he was very happy
after getting the visiting card. He was
so happy because of his emotion. Here
the dimension of emotion that is
happiness worked. Happiness is a
positive emotion. It influences a person
in a highly positive manner. Happiness expresses a positive or
favorable feeling about something.

7. What are organizations like as work


settings?

A social loafer creates


huge problem in a group and
group work. When we started
our group assignment or report
or presentation, we divided it in
such a way that everyone in the
group has to perform some part
of the assignment. So we didnt
have any free rider in our
group.
The reasons behind this are given below:1)
Social loafing mainly occurs when the group is relatively large.
But the size of our group is small. So everyone was bounded to
complete their work.2)
We have been working as a group member for a long time
so we know the capabilities and limitation of the members. So
we arranged our work in such a way that everyone was assigned
with work.3)
If there was any conflict regarding the work then we
arranged group meeting to solve that problem.4)
All the members in a group should have some responsibilities

Example of Sales Corporation

Rocket Sales Corporation is a good example for the new


entrepreneurs. Because it helps to know how we can get and use the
opportunity. It does not do any unethical or wrong act with AYS
Corporation. They use the opportunity which the AYS Corporation
cannot use. Even At the beginning of the Rocket Singh movie the
President of the AYS Corporation said to Harpreet Singh the
initiator if you want to go higher in life you should leave your footprint
on your colleagues or other people head and you have to face many
problems. It means that all the things that are done by Rocket Sales
Corporation with AYS Corporation is normal in the business world
if anyone wants to shine. In the movie we can see that Harpreet Singh,
the founder of the Rocket Sales Corporation, was a very honest
person. He did not do any unethical work in his field work. He never
ever thought to do any type of unethical acts for sales order. So when
one manager of a leading company offer him bribe he rejected this and
complain against that manager. For that work Harpreet Singh was
misbehaved by the president of AYS Corporation and his colleagues.
Harpreet Singh thought that he would that customers can trust them
easily They give more priority to service rather than sales because good
service helps to increase sales if any customer offer them bribe they do
not take any accept it They do not promise customer false delivery date
They give service 24 hours We think that these strategies are very
important for the new entrepreneur. These rules are important not only
for new comers but also existing business or company. Now we can look
the internal and external situation of AYS Corporation. It was such
type of company where employees were maltreated by its supervisors.
This corporation also was skimming the market with a very high price.
They also thought that only bribe could help to get you order so on

Conclusion

Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir


Kapoor) is a mediocre student with big
dreams of making big bucks. So what does a
chap who is not an engineer or doctor do to
make money? Sales! Selling things to people
who dont need those things is an art that
fascinates Harpreet. He starts his work with
whole heartedly.He started his business with
strong thought that I am successful, here in
film he executed suddenly during a phone call lead to buy computers. As if he has
fully established business. Then gradually with words and action he developed his
business Every employee has good qualities of Rising in career. Recognizing the
skills is an important task. Here he finds the skills of Technical person to peon and
from immediate boss to telephone operator. So the Receptionist at AYS becomes
the Customer Relations Executive at Rocket, while the chai-walla becomes a
computer assembler. As soon as the chai-walla begins to be called Mr. Srivastava,
he learns a new state of self-respect and worth. Every person in an organization
should be similarly respected Give it to other which you want to have. The process
of empowerment brings out the best in employees. Thus, by making other
employees equal co-owners in his company, Rocket Singh acquires a loyal,
dedicated and hardworking team who work day and night to build the company.
Rocket Singhs failure to sell computer, thought him that it is asking people is prerequisite to become a great salesperson. If you are hesitant to break the ice, start
conversations and ask for help and guidance and engage people in discussions, you
then need to cultivate people skills. Businesses today are now defined by a focus
on services. Delighted and satisfied customers are your ambassadors and their
referral can generate more business than you can handle From the starting of
selling of his first computes sales to the success of Rocket sales Corporation, Singh
has worked out his abilities and going through the details, he also took the risk
quiet often. He was also ready to sale of his scooter at one point of time.
