Archaeology is the study of material culture and/or things made in the past to reconstruct
past life ways and explain cultural processes. It is multi-disciplinary. Anthropology, history,
and science are the three disciplines connected with archaeology.
Archaeology as anthropology studies about the past through material culture. It could be
ethno archaeology which studies the use of material culture or heritage studies which deals
with cultural heritage.

traditional production techniques can be useful to understand and interpret archaeologically
attested ceramics.
Archaeology as history studies about the past through written evidence and material culture.
This picture (http://emwgradstudent.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/montpelier-archaeologyaj.jpg) shows an archaeological site in Montplier. Archaeologists are in search for artifacts in
the Madison era. Some of the items recovered were remnants of slave cabins, and artifacts
once owned by the slaves.
Archaeology as science studies about the past through the use of scientific method to gather
evidence, observe, analyze, and conclude. Archaeology could be environmental which deals
with the human use of plants and animals and its adaptation to changing environment. It
could be underwater which studies the archaeological evidences found underwater. It could
deal with archaeological human remains (human osteoarchaeology) or animal remains
(zooarcheology). Experimental archaeology generates and tests archaeological hypothesis.

Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers (1827 - 1900) is the Father of British Archaeology due
to his approach to artifact classification. He developed the idea of typology which is the
classification of artifacts in a chronological sequence, showing their development over time.

He also promoted the basic principles of digging and of research.

Eusebio Dizon was the founding director of the archaeological studies program at the
University of the Philippines, Diliman in 1995. He was one of the anthropologists who has
excavated in Batanes, proving that it is the only site in the country where many sites record

existence

3. 4pts (DIFFICULT)
Bakit importante sa artifact sa kanyang context?
Ano ang CONTEXT?
Why is it important to find artifacts in its context?
What is CONTEXT?
Context is the position and association of an artifact, feature, or archaeological find in space
and time. Noting where the artifact was found and what was around it assists archaeologists
in determining chronology and interpreting function and significance. Loss of context strips
an artifact of meaning and makes it more difficult to determine function.
Upang mahanap ang artifact sa kanyang context, kailangan ng ARCHAEOLOGICAL
EXCAVATION. Paano ginagawa ang ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION? (steps)
In order to find artifacts in context, an ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION is performed. How do
you conduct and archaeological excavation?
STEP1: Research Design (formulation of research questions)
STEP2: Collecting and recording of evidences (excavation, reconnaissance survey, aerial
survey, subsurface survey)
STEP3: Processing and analysis of evidences
STEP4: Publication of results

community trading with Srivijayan Empire in Southeast Asia and China as early as 10th
century AD.

4. 2pts (EASY)
Nakakasira ba ang NATIONALISM sa ARCHAEOLOGY? Bakit?
Is NATIONALISM detrimental to Archaeology? Why or why not?

Nationalism is somehow detrimental to archaeology because there is a tendency to neglect

important details in agreement with the state. Archaeology becomes dependent to the state
since it finances archaeological projects and also aids in promoting archaeology as a
discipline. This state-archaeologist relationship turns out to be detrimental when the former
manipulates the data that will be published. The data will be affected by the states bias and
could use it for propaganda purposes. Due to this, audience and future researchers will be
misinformed. Archaeology will not flourish if it will be contained since connection with other
nation helps in trading culture. Thus, idea becomes boundless and archaeological findings
are able to propagate.

Callao Man was excavated in Peablanca, Cagayan in 2007 led by Dr. Armand Mijares. It was
found out to be around 67, 000 years old using uranium-series dating.
This foot bone discovered in the Callao Cave was a mere 2.4 inches. It indicates that it
belongs to a primate closely related to small-bodied Homo.
