Introduction
Biometric Enabled Student Attendance & Information System
= Access control + User friendly + Reports.
Enables student to punch for their attendance in more secured
and reliable environment using fingerprint scanner .
Live Updates
Student attendance record
Enables university to monitor student attendance records
Enables university to active or inactive student account.

Biometric
The word Biometric comes from the Greek language, so to
be more specific bio means life and metric means to
measure.

Biometrics is the science and technology of Measuring and

analysing Biological data . (Wiki, 2011)

Fig 1. Types of Biometrics(Huake Technology, 2001)

Why Biometrics?
Convenient and Reliable
Passwords are not user-friendly
Perceived as more secure
May actually be more secure
May be useful as a deterrent

Passive identification

Types Of Biometrics
Most commonly used types of Biometrics are;

Facial Recognition: The analysis of facial features for the

authentication of an individuals identity

Iris Recognition: The use of the features found
in the iris to identify an individual.

Voice Recognition: The use of the voice as a method
of determining the identity of a speaker for access control.

Signature Recognition: The authentication of an
individual by the analysis of handwriting style, in
particular the signature.

Hand Geometry: The use of the geometric features
of the hand such as the lengths of fingers and the width
of the hand to identify an individual.

Fingerprint Recognition: The use of the ridges and
valleys (minutiae) found on the surface tips of a human
finger to identify an individual.

Fingerprint Recognition
Fingerprint cant be :

Easily borrowed

Lost or stolen
Forgotten
False or
Guessed

Fingerprint Continued
Present on your fingers is skin, which is
different from that on other areas of your
body. This skin is rough or corrugated,
consisting of raised portions called Ridges.
Minutiae are major features of a
fingerprint, using which comparisons of
one print with another can be made.
For fingerprint recognition Minutiae include:
Ridge Ending
Ridge Bifurcation

Biometric Fingerprint Scanners

Fingerprint Scanners consist of:
A reader or scanning device.

Software that consist of scanned

information into digital form (bytes)
and compares match points.
A database that stores biometric
data for comparison.

Fingerprint Matching
Fingerprint identification process consist of essential process:
Enrolment
Authentication

Figure 10 will show step by step process of fingerprint matching

False Accept and False Reject

Two types of error can occur in a biometric system,
False Accept(hit) and
False Reject (no hit):

Benefit of Biometric system in

Universities

Easy and fool proof verification for end user

Instant reports
Prevent the misuse of attendance system due to fingerprint
Save time and money
Fast and reliable system
Easy to use and enrol fingerprint profiles

Fingerprint Attendance System

Biometrics add an additional layer of
security to attendance system
Smart cards provide the
Something you have factor.

The something you know is

usually a password.
Integrating a fingerprint scanner
into Student attendance system
increases the security by adding

Why Fingerprint Attendance

System is Better?
Manual Attendance System

Fingerprint Attendance System

Maintains manual register entries

Quick and accurate attendance record

System can be easily manipulated

Quite secure and reliable system

Extra employee need to work on report

generation or manual databases entry

Generate user friendly report in just

seconds

Attendance records can be easily changed Attendance records cannot be faked or

or faked
changed.

Conclusion
Technology is growing rapidly, but at the same time security breaches,
transaction frauds are increases around the world. Now days every
organisation who are in need to security, surveillance and safety have to
adopt Biometrics.
