Instructions for using Microsoft Network Monitor to capture Forerunner 620 wireless data

1. Download Microsoft Network Monitor onto a PC that has a Wi-Fi card or Wi-Fi dongle installed.
The software can be found at the following link:

o Download NM34_x86.exe for Windows XP (non-64 bit OS)
o Download NM34_x64.exe for Windows Vista/Windows 7 (64 bit OS)
Install the SW following the typical installation instructions. (Note: Windows Vista and
Windows Server 2008 users will need to log off and back on before using the tool.)
2. Configure the wireless router/Access Point (AP) that the FR 620 will connect to with the
following settings
a. Channel: Fixed [1-11]
b. Security: Open/no encryption (capture tools cannot decode encrypted transfers)
c. Mode: 802.11 B and/or G
3. Start MS Network Monitor. In the lower left-hand corner you will find the Select Networks
window.

Select your computers Wi-Fi interface (see red arrow) and disable all other network interfaces.
Record the Friendly Name of your selection, most likely Wireless Network Connection
(optionally followed by a number if more than one wireless adapter is available). This will be
needed later on.

4. While your Wi-Fi network interface is selected, click on the Properties button (circled in red
above). This will open the Network Interface Configuration window, shown below.

5. In the Network Interface Configuration window, click on the Scanning Options button to open
the WiFi Scanning Options window. Follow the steps below to configure the scanning options.
a. Select the adapter This MUST match the desired interfaces Friendly Name noted in
step 3

b. Switch to monitor mode Check the Switch to Monitor Mode checkbox

c. Select the layer and channel (1) Choose the Select a layer and channel radio button,
(2) Select the layer/mode (MUST match mode set in AP in step 2c), (3) Select the
channel (MUST match channel set in AP in step 2a). See numbered arrows below.

d. Apply changes Click the Apply button (circled in red) and confirm the Layer and
Channel status fields at the bottom of the window (see red dashed boxed outline)
match the selections (2) and (3) from step 5c.
e. Minimize the WiFi Scanning Options window but DO NOT CLOSE IT!!! Closing the
window will cancel all the scanning options and the wireless card will resume normal
operation.
6. Close the Network Interface Configuration window (see step 4) by pressing either the OK or
Cancel button.

7. On the main Network Monitor window, press the New Capture button under the menu items
in the top left corner. This will open a Capture tab in main window.

8. In the Capture tab window, press the Capture Settings button. This will open a Capture
Settings window.

9. On the FR 620, find the MAC address on the about page (Settings System About). On the
about page, press the bottom of the touch screen three times to reach the 4th screen which
contains the Wi-Fi MAC address information. In the Current capture filter box enter the text
below using the MAC address of your FR620. (Note the use of - instead of : when entering
the MAC address information).

10. Press the Apply button and verify that the filter is correctly displayed next to the Current
capture filter: text. Then close the Capture Settings window with the Close button.

11. Now that weve configured the tool, start the capture by pressing the Start button next to the
Capture Settings button. This will start the network capture. You should see the filter
information displayed again at the top of the Frame Summary window.

12. Now unlock your FR 620 and press the Connect key. At this point you should see data start to
populate the Frame Summary window. After the transaction has completed, press the Stop
button to the right of the Start button.

13. After the capture has been stopped, save it using the Save As button to the right of the
Capture Settings button.

14. In the Save As window, select a file name and a location to save the capture file, but do not
change the other default settings. Press the Save button to save the wireless capture.

15. Close all Network Monitor windows (This will restore your Wi-Fi card to normal operation) and
restore your Wi-Fi router/Access Point settings. Email the capture file (*.cap) to the Garmin
representative who sent you this document.
