Abbreviations for Journals and Series

Introduction
The following lists JEA preferred styles for journals and series, as well as for some
standard reference items. Where commensurate with current JEA style the list has
been correlated with precedent in previous JEAs, as well as practice found in other
Egyptological journals and bibliographical and library resources. This list is not
intended to be comprehensive, merely representative, and will be revised regularly.
Journal titles are styled as main titles and are set in italic. Abbreviation is used for
all standard Egyptological journals. Journals from kindred fields, such as the Ancient
Near East or Ancient Northern Africa can be abbreviated regularly. Journals from
disciplines unlikely to be widely familiar or readily accessible should be written out
in full, e.g. Journal of the American Institute of Conservation. In some cases, e.g.
journals dealing more broadly with African archaeology, either abbreviation or full
writing may be suitable, e.g. the African Archaeological Review, which may also be
abbreviated AAR. Such options are noted. In cases of regular citation, full first title
followed by abbreviated title on subsequent citations may suit.
Series information is included in bibliographical matter within parenthesis set
in plain text. Series information is supplementary to the principal bibliographical
components of author and tile and is presented succinctly. Abbreviation should
be used regularly, excepting cases unlikely to be familiar to the field or not readily
accessible.
The conventions adopted for abbreviation are practical (and thus are not intended
to be completely uniform), The following are adopted as guidelines:
1. Where practicable or without leading to ambiguity, abbreviations for journal or
series titles composed of three or more words reduce major components by initialism
(so JEA for the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology). In potentially ambiguous cases one
or more of the components may be treated in full or in abbreviation.
2.Styling for journal or series titles composed of two words divides on a practical
basis. Established or recognisable initialisms are preferred (so A for the series
gyptologische Abhandlungen and not the alternates AegAb or AegAbhand), whereas
in other cases styling may be by formal abbreviation (that is, by sequence of initial
letters from the various components) without any additional punctuation or spacing
between or at the end of elements (e.g. LingAeg for Lingua Aegyptia). Abbreviation

is used particularly for potentially ambiguous items and/or where this styling is in
general use or is orginator preferred style (e.g. AegLeod).
3. Abbreviations as used by the originator are preferred when commensurate with
JEA style (so Pd and not P).
4. Additional or separable components (in full or abbreviated by initialism, contraction
or formal abbreviation) are positioned after a single space (e.g. EES EM).
5.Single word main titles, such as Orientalia and Antiquity are not abbreviated.
6.French diacritics are not retained in capitalized abbreviations (so RdE and not
Rd), whereas German umlauts are retained (so A). In the listings of full title, full
capitalization style is used throughout.
7. Abbreviations exclude punctuation.
Note
This edition has been prepared with a specific focus on the production of JEA 93 (2007)
through to JEA 95 (2009). It is not a compendium of existing listings, although such
listings have been consulted and a number of standard items have been incorporated
from such lists. In addition, work on providing background information is far from
complete and has not been fully checked, but it is necessary to provide contributors
and readers with a working version of JEA AJS. The editors thus recognise that this
is a work in progess and welcome corrections or additions, particularly from editors
or publishers of journals or series.
