PET Practice Exam: Listenings

There are four parts to the test. You will hear each
part twice. For each part of the test, there will be
time for you to look through the questions and time
for you to check your answers.
Look at the instruction to Part 1.
There are seven questions in this part. For each
question, there are three pictures and a short
recording. Choose the correct picture and put a
tick in the box below it. Before we start, here is an
example:

Salesman: Can I help you?
Girl:
Yes, please Im going to visit my
grandma in hospital and Id like to get her
a present.
Salesman: What about some chocolates?
Girl:
No.
Salesman: A book?
Girl:
Im not sure what she likes to read.
Salesman: In that case, why dont you buy her some
flowers?
Girl:
Oh, thats a good idea!
Mary bought flowers. The first picture is correct so
there is a tick in box A. Now we are ready to start.
1. Who was the man sitting behind?
Woman: Did you enjoy the film?
Man:
Yes, but I had a difficult time seeing it.
Woman: Why?
Man:
There was a very tall man in front of me
and he kept leaning over to talk to his
girlfriend.
Now listen again.
2. Which handbag does the girl ask for?
Girl:
Id like to see the handbag in the
window, please.
Salesperson: Which one are you interested in?
The bag with the white stripes?
Girl:
No. Theres a big bag with a long
strap.
Salesperson: Oh, yes. Next to the pair of sandals.
Now listen again.
3. What does the woman order?
Waiter: Good morning, sir. What can I get you?
Man:
Id like a cup of tea and a piece of cake,
please.
Waiter: And you, madam?
Woman: Could I have a glass of iced coffee and a

Now listen again.
4. Where will Janets Mum pick her up?

Mother: No, Janet. Im not coming that way.
Please walk down Jackson Street and
wait on the corner of Jackson and Adams

Janet:
Where the library is?
Mother: Thats right. See you later.
Now listen again.

5. What will Wendy bring to the party?

Wendy: Do you have enough drinks?
Man:

Wendy: Oh, I cant bake, but Id be happy to make

That would be lovely. Thanks.
Now listen again.

Woman: Are you also flying to Paris?

Now listen again.

to the armchair.
Now listen again.
That is the end of Part 1.
Now turn to Part 2, questions 8 to 13. You will hear
Alan Harris talking about Thailand and the Thai
people. For each question, put a tick in the correct
box.
You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions
for Part 2. Now we are ready to start.
Good evening. Im Alan Harris and Im here to tell you
about Thailand. Its a country I have visited many times
and each time Im there, I discover new and exciting
places.
I understand that most of you are planning a holiday in
Thailand. Believe me, you wont be sorry. Thailand is a
beautiful and popular holiday destination in Asia today.
The country has mountains, rainforests and jungles.
There are also many exotic islands if you like the sea
and the beach. The food is delicious and shopping is
fantastic.
Whats the best time to visit Thailand? Well, thats
difficult to answer. Many people like to visit Thailand
during the winter because the weather is dry and cool.
The hottest time is during the spring May and June
and its difficult to go on tours or do a lot of sightseeing
then. The rainy season is during the summer and
autumn from around June to November. But the rain
shouldnt stop you from visiting Thailand, as its very
beautiful at that time of the year. Its also less crowded
because fewer people visit during the rainy season.
The people of Thailand are very warm and friendly.
They love having guests in their country and they are
very polite but sometimes they ask personal
questions, which can be embarrassing. Just remember
that they arent being rude.
They are simply curious about the many people who
visit their country.
The culture and tradition of Thailand are different from
ours and you need to know a little about the people in
order to know how to behave. Here are a few tips that
may be useful when you visit Thailand.

Tip number 1: The Thais think its very bad manners to
show anger or talk loudly. So try not to shout and keep
calm.
Tip number 2: If you eat with Thai people, remember to
have a spoon of rice at the beginning of the meal. This
will show that you understand how important rice is in
Thailand.
Tip number 3: The head is the most important part of
the body. Never touch a Thai person on the head.
Tip number 4: The Thais believe that the feet are the
dirtiest part of the body and its very bad manners to

That is the end of Part 2.
Now turn to Part 3, questions 14 to 19. You will hear
the manager talking about the conference and the
hotels facilities. For each question, fill in the
missing information in the numbered space.
You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3.
Now we are ready to start.
Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Im Michelle
Robbins, the manager of City Park Hotel. We are very
glad to welcome you once again to the English
Teachers Conference.
In your conference bag, you will find the programme as
well as your tickets for tea, coffee and lunch. Tea and
coffee are served all day in the visitors lounge.
The opening lecture today is in the main conference
hall on the ground floor. It starts promptly at 10 oclock.
This afternoon, lectures will continue in the two small
conference rooms on the first floor.
At half past twelve, lunch is served in the hotel dining
room. There is our usual full menu with a large choice
of vegetarian food. If you dont wish to eat in the dining
room, sandwiches and cold drinks are available at the
kiosk next to the swimming pool.
For those of you who are staying in the hotel tonight,
please make sure that you register at the desk in the
lobby. You may collect your keys from there, but the
rooms will only be available at noon. If you wish to eat
dinner in the hotel this evening, please ask the
receptionist to reserve a table for you.
The swimming pool will be open until 9 pm. For those
of you who want to dance, the disco will be open until
midnight. We are happy to announce that Paul and
Pete will put on their magic act for our guests in the
disco tonight. There is 24-hour room service and you
can order snacks from the kitchen after the main dining
room has closed.
Id like to wish you all a very successful conference.
Enjoy your stay.
Now listen again.
That is the end of Part 3.

Rosemary: Im not sure I want to go by bike, Steven.

Steven:
Come on, Rosemary. Dont you want to
try out your new bike on a long trip?
Rosemary: Yes, of course I do. But, to be honest, Im
a little scared.
Steven:
Why?
Rosemary: Well, its dangerous being on a bike on
the main road. But if we go on the country
roads, well never get there. You want us
to ride quite a long distance.
Steven:
True, but itll be a lot of fun.
Rosemary: Im not sure about that. Id prefer to go by
bus. Its a lot safer and we can relax. The
bus is also air-conditioned.
Steven:
I hadnt thought of that. Yes, airconditioning is important. But then the bus
will be more expensive than if we go by
bike, wont it?
Rosemary: Yes, you know it will, but well get there
much quicker.
Steven:
I thought the whole idea of this weekend
was to enjoy ourselves out in the fresh air.
Rosemary: Youre right, it was, but I still think its too
hot to ride. If we go by bus, well get there
sooner and we can go for a long hike in
the hills.
Steven:
If you want to use public transport, we
could take the train. Thats comfortable
and fast.
Rosemary: Steven, the train doesnt go right into the
hills. But there are buses to the small
villages and then we can walk.
Steven:
So, youve made up your mind, have
you?
Rosemary: Well I dont want to be difficult, but I
Steven:
OK, OK! Well go by bus. You realise that
well have to take two buses, dont you?
Rosemary: Yes, I know well have to changes buses
somewhere.
Steven:
But next time, were going to ride our
bikes.
Rosemary: OK. Thanks, Im happier now. Youll see
the weather forecast for this weekend
is hot. In the end, youll be glad I
convinced you.
Steven:
Well see. Do you have a map?
Rosemary: What for?
Steven:
Id like to look at the route the buses take
and then we can decide where we want to
start our hike.
Rosemary: OK. Ill get the map.
Now listen again.
That is the end of Part 4.

Now turn to Part 4, questions 20 to 25. Look at the

six sentences for this part. You will hear a
conversation between Rosemary and Steven. They
are going away for the weekend and cant decide
how to travel. Decide if each sentence is correct or
incorrect. If it is correct, put a tick in the box under
A for YES. If it is not correct, put a tick in the box
under B for NO. You now have 20 seconds to look
at the questions for Part 4.
Now we are ready to start.
