Familiar, but often misunderstood

There are a number of texts
in the Bible that are familiar to
most any Bible reader. However, just because a section of
the Bible is well known, is no
guarantee that it is properly
understood. We come to one
such passage for our article
this week. We read the following words in Romans 10:910: That if you confess with
your mouth the Lord Jesus
and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the
dead, you will be saved. For
with the heart man believes
unto righteousness, and with
the mouth confession is made
unto salvation. Here we have
wonderful, liberating truth.
This passage stands as a defense against all that seek to
mix works-righteousness with
faith. We do not earn salvation by noble deeds or religious accomplishment, but by
calling upon the Lord in faith.
So why am I concerned that
this passage is often misunderstood and misapplied?
The passage has often
been reduced to simply requiring what may amount
to a superficial confession of
Christ. This is often couched
in what has been called a sinners prayer. By that I mean
the wide spread practice of
coaching someone to pray
a rote prayer confessing sin
and inviting Jesus into ones
heart. This tactic is something

quite new and without Biblical support. It results in faith

often being reduced to merely
agreeing with the Biblical facts
that Christ exists and is who
He says He is. Having taken
this step of confessing Christ
the person is then assured that
they are now saved. When in
time the person shows little
evidence of change of life and
enduring fruit in Christian
living, they are reminded that
they are indeed saved because
they confessed and believed.
This is widespread and deadly.
I beg you not to trust in an
empty confession that has not
resulted in a life of love and
obedience to Christ.
Lets consider a more faithful way to approach this text.
The passage means to first of
all point us to Christ alone as
our only hope for righteousness and the gift of eternal
salvation. The chapter begins
with the warning that Israel
sought to establish her own
righteousness through the law,
rather than by faith. More
than anything, Pauls desire
was to see his fellow Israelites
embrace Christ by faith. Faith
has always been the one and

only way of salvation. We

can no more earn salvation
by righteous deeds than we
could ascend into heaven or
descend into the abyss. (V.6)
This is simply showing the
type of effort or accomplishment that is both unnecessary and impossible. Rather,
salvation is as near as confessing with the mouth and
believing in the heart. (V.8)
So what does it mean to confess with your mouth? Notice that we must confess the
Lord Jesus. In the early days
of Christianity this was indeed a costly and life changing confession. In the ancient
Roman world there was only
one Lord and that was Cae-

sar. To give another the title

of Lord was a crime worthy
of death. Greek scholar A.T.
Robertson writes, No Gentile would do it who had not
ceased worshipping the emperor as Lord. The Scripture
says that this kind of true
confession comes only as a
result of the work of the Holy
Spirit. No one can say that
Jesus is Lord except by the
Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians
12:3) We are saved by faith
alone in the person and work
of Christ alone. The evidence
that our confession is genuine is seen in our yielding
allegiance and obedience to
Christ as Lord. The Lord Jesus pulled no punches when

he said, But why do you

call Me Lord, Lord, and do
not the things which I say?
(Luke 6:46) A true confession of faith is not mere lip
service. Rather, it will yield
the fruit of a changed life.
The early church suffered and
died because she faithfully
proclaimed Christ as Lord.
We must also ask what
it means to believe in your
heart. In a number of places
the Bible warns of faith that is
superficial. James says, Even
the demons believe and tremble. (James 2:19) Far from a
casual belief, true belief with
the heart is to wholeheartedly
agree with what the Scripture
says concerning the person

and the cross work of Christ.

This agreement comes from
the very core of our being.
This is a sincere faith that
trusts in Christ as Scripture
reveals Him. The very nature of this faith results in
a lifetime of believing and
trusting our very eternity to
the one who died for us and
rose again. We must always
remember, Faith without
works is dead. (James 2:20)
It is never enough to look
back upon a past experience
for assurance of eternal salvation. If our belief and confession is real, there should be
the fruit of love and obedience to Christ today. Question: Is it real?
