LOCKING DEVICES FOR BALL AND SOCKET COUPLINGS

OF STRING INSUI,ATOR UNITS
Part 1: Dimensionsand generalrules

FOREWORD
1) The formal decisionsor agreementsof the IEC on technicalmatters, preparedby TechnicalCommitteeson which all the
National Committeeshaving a specialinterest therein are represented, express,as nearly as possible, an international
consensusof opinion on the subjectsdealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendationsfor international use and they are acceptedby the National Committees in that
sense.
3) ln order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses
the wish that all National Committeesshould adopt the
text of the I E C recommendationfor their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence
betweenthe IEC recommendationand the correspondingnational rules should, as far as possible,be clearly indicatedin
the latter.

PREFACE
This standard has beenprepared by Sub-Committee368, Insulators for Overhead Lines, of IEC Technical Con.mittee
No. 36, Insulators.
This standard replacesthe first edition of IEC Publication 372-l (r97r).
The revision of the publication was decidedat the meetingheld in Ankara in 1973:
-

to take into account the decisionsalready taken for the testsof locking devices;

to add locking devicesfor use on 28 and 32 standardcouplings;

to introducea secondalternative"Loose fit splirpin", to usewhen a problem of internal corrosionis possiblefor the splitpin metal.

A first draft was discussedat the meetingheld in Bucharestin May 1974.A seconddraft was discussedat the meetingheld
in Stockholmin 1975.
A new draft, Document 36B(Central Office)46, was submitted to the National Committees for approval under the Six
Months' Rule in January 1976.

LOCKING DEYICES FOR BALL AND SOCKET COUPLINGS

OF STRING INSUI,ATOR TINITS
Part 1: Dimensionsand generalrules

l.

Scope
This standardappliesto locking devicesfor ball and socketcouplingsof string insulator units
and to the correspondingmetal fltting describedin IEC Publication 120: Dimensionsof Ball and
SocketCouplingsof String Insulator Units.
Although closelyconnectedwith IEC Publication 120 the presentstandardis an independent
publication. Althougl IEC Publication 120 does not give details of the locking devicesit does
specifythe minimum thickness7 and the internal heightof the socketI12in relation to the location
of the locking deviceabovethe bottom of the socket.
The presentstandardfollows IEC Publication 120 in the above respectsand sincethe socket
part of an insulator or fitting is normally suppliedcompletewith the locking device, there is no
problemin securityor clearancewhenusinginsulatorsor fittings with locking devicesin accordance
with this standard,in associationwith insulatorsand fittings with couplings, with other lockrng
devicesin accordancewith I E C Publication 120.

2.

Object
The object of this standard is to define the shapes and dimensions for locking devices and for
the part of the socket into which they fit.

3.

Plan of the standard

Two types of locking devicesare standardized, one using a split-pin, the other a W-shaped clip.
The first type requires a circular hole and the second one a rectangular hole. Consequently the
standard covers the shape and dimensions of the part of the socket into which the locking device
fits according to the type to be used.
Two split-pins are proposed:
-

Standard split-piu

Alternative split-pin: This split-pin is a loose fit in the socket-hole. This alternative may be
used by special agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser,
when problems of stress corrosion are possible for the split-pin metal,
due to the permanent stressin the tight fit system.

This split-pin is a tight fit in the socket-hole.

9
The socket-hole into which the locking device fits is the same for both the standard and alternative
split-pins, so it is possible to use the alternative split-pin in a socket designed for the standard splitpin (see Clause 6, Note 2).
See Clauses 7 to 9 for dimensions concerning split-pins.
See Clauses 10 and 12 for dimensions concerning W-clips.
Note.- All dimensionsare givenin millimetres.

4.

Properties required for the locking devices

The locking devicesshall passsuccessfully

the testsprescribedin I E C Publication372-2.

5 . Shape and position of the socked-hole for the locking device

5 . 1 Split-pins
Sockets for use with split-pins may have the hole for the split-pin located with its lower edge
on the level of the bottom of the socket, or the hole may be located above that level within the limits
given by H, in Clause 7. This allows the necessarymargin when the split-pin hole is to be drilled.
Examples of different methods of shaping the split-pin hole are shown in Clause 7.
The hole for the split-pin and the length Lz of the split-pin are designed to make the eye of the
split-pin protrude at least 5 mm. This feature makes it easy to grip the split pin with a,suitable
device.
The free ends of the split-pin are bent outwards and one of the legs has a hump. These feature
provide two distinct positions for the split-pin when operated for locking and coupling, and complete withdrawal is effectively prevented

5.2

W-clips
Sockets for use with W-clips have the lower edge of the rectangular slot at the level of the bottom
of the socket. The slot is so shaped that it will accept the W-clip and retain it in two distinct positions when operated for coupling and locking. The shape of the W-clip is such that complete withdrawal when moving from the locking to the coupling position is prevented.

Note.- The lockingcapabilityand operatingcharacteristics

of lockingdevicesdependon the characteristics
of the
materialsfrom which they are made(seeClause4), and on the combinationof dimensionsof the locking
deviceand the socket.Variationsof untoleranceddimensionsand evendimensionswithin the permitted
tolerances
may havean influence(seealsoClause6).

s'fandard'
bu'f
each
HJIT;?:':H*::1Hltil":;:l"f's
In the case of split-pins, attention is drawn to the fact that too much impact on the head of the pin during
setting into the locking position may cause deformation to the extent that the locking capability is affected.

Care also must be taken that the performance of the split-pin is not affected by deformation caused during
opening out of the tips.

6.

1 1-

Internal height of the socket

As a result of the dimensions adapted in this standard, the internal height H2 of the socket should
be increasedbeyond the Hr^tn of IEC Publication 120.
The increaseis required sincethe locking devicedoes not always rest on the bottom of the socket
and also to allow for the fact that the maximum thickness of the split-pins or W-clips is 0.2 mm
greater than Zmin of I E C Publication 120.
An increase of only 0.2 mm may be neglectedas the resulting reduction in clearance 0*i"
IEC Publication 120 is admissible.

of

On the contrary, an increase of the internal height Hz^in is necessary when the split-pin is
situated at a ceftain distance from the bottom of the socket.
When the standardsplit-pins are used,the internal height Hr^tn prescribedin I E C Publication 120
shall be increased by L,H2 according to the following table:

The gaugesfor the internal height of the socket prescribedin ClauseB.11 of IEC Publication 120 shall
be increasedby the figuresA//, above. However, existinggaugesaccording to Clause B.1l of IEC Publication 120 may be used. In this case,it shall be possibleto introduce a flat gaugewith a thicknessAI1,
betweenthe bottom of the socket and the gaugefor internal height plaed in the gauging position.

Completeinterchangeabilityremainsbetweenthe socketsusing A11, accordingto the first edition of I EC

Publication 372-l and the socketsusing A1l, accordingto this edition.
When the alternativesplit-pinsare used, the internal height Hr^in prescribedin IEC Publication l2O may
be used. Indeed, it can be consideredthat the split-pins rest on the bottom of the socket becausethe
figures L,H, are very small: 0.2 to 0.3 rnm. The resulting reduction in clearancesO min D&y be neglected
(seeClause13 of IEC Publication120).

-3.-

The figures AfI, given in the table have been calculated by adding quadratically the tolerancesconcerning
hr, H" and T, and also taking into account the position of the split-pin which is not horizontal becausethe
tips of the legs are in contact with the bottom of the socket.
