VAN WERT The owner of PC-ER,

located inside Walmart in Van Wert,
received a loan from the Van Wert City
Revolving Loan Fund Thursday evening.
Maggie Wannemacher of Intermedia 3,

Inc. said that the borrowed money will

go to offer an internship at the Van Wert
location.
We have somebody lined up who is
native to Van Wert, but weve been having him working for us over in the Lima
store. said Wannemacher.
PC-ER is located in Delphos, Lima
and Wapakoneta, as well as the Van
Wert store. The staff does computer

and laptop repair, cell phone, tablet
and most anything electronic in need
of repair.
The store opened last spring in Van
Wert and Wannemacher likes the way
business has been going to this point.
DELPHOS Lent is early this year and the

Delphos Ministerial Association will once again hold
its annual Lenten Lunch Program on Thursdays from
Feb. 19 through March 26 at Trinity United Methodist
Church.
This years theme is The Parables of Lent. Each
week, the Lenten series will look at life situations everyone faces.
The first will be held at noon Feb. 19 with the Rev.
Rich Rakay bringing the devotional for the day. Rev.
Rakay will look at the theme of The Pharisee and the
Tax Collector.
Lunch will follow. A goodwill offering of $3.50 is
suggested.
Other dates in the Lenten series are:
Feb. 26 The Rev. Harry Tolhurst to speak on The
Sower and the Seed.
March 5 The Rev. David Howell to speak on
Hidden Treasures and Priceless Pearl.
March 12 The Rev Ron Lumm to speak on The
Good Samaritan.
March 19 St. Johns Parish priest to speak on
Workers in the Vineyard.
March 26 Pastor Steven Nelson to speak on The
Prodigal Son.
A special service will be held at noon on Good Friday
with no luncheon. The sermon will be The Landowner
Tenants.
All are welcome to these programs.

Two need host families

DHI Media Staff Reports
DELPHOS The Delphos-Verl Friendship Link is still
seeking host families for the student exchange.
We have had only two male students apply for the
exchange program, coordinator Rick Hanser said. As in the
past, the students will be scheduled to arrive in late July and
return to Germany early December.
Hanser is in search of host families for these two young
men. The preference is for local families in the Delphos School
District who have school-aged children in the home.
Christian Sagemueller is 14 years old and lives in Guetersloh,
Germany. His favorite things are sports and music. He plays
soccer and badminton and also the keyboard and enjoys making music using his computer.

Thousands of people signing up for health insurance
this weekend may not realize
it, but their coverage under
President Barack Obamas
law could be short-lived.
The 2015 enrollment season, which ends Sunday,
has avoided last years website meltdown so far. But a
Supreme Court case could
result in millions of consumers losing financial assistance
for their premiums later in
the year.
The Affordable Care Act still
sits on shifting political sands.
This would be devastating, said Nita Carter, who
oversees statewide enrollment

Without the subsidy, health
insurance will be unaffordable
for many. If it is unaffordable,
then it is not accessible.
The Supreme Court case,

found that more than half of
Americans have heard nothing at all about it and another
30 percent only a little.

At Thursday nights St. Johns girls basketball game versus New Bremen at The Vatican, the St. Johns Alumni Band
will perform for the last time. The band has been performing
at Blue Jay girls basketball games for more than 20 years.
Director Dan Duncan and the pep band of nearly 20 members
have delighted home and visiting crowds at over 200 Blue Jay
games.
25 Years Ago - 1990
Ottoville Limited Edition Chapter of Ohio Child
Conservation League heard a presentation on Reyes Syndrome
at a recent meeting. Fourteen members and several guests
attended the meeting in the home of Elaine Schimmoeller.
President JoAnn Horstman conducted the meeting. Raffles
were held by Del Knippen and won by Mary Jo Horstman and
Suzanne Wannemacher.
What a game! Elida 49, Kalida 47. There were fans,
there was noise and there were two state-ranked girls basketball teams going nose-to-nose. Elida was led in scoring
by University of Cincinnati recruit Cindy Baker who had 18
points. No other Bulldog hit double figures, although Julie
Heil, Beth Holmes and Jenni McGraw chipped in with eight
points apiece.
Vocational business education students in the Delphos
schools will join Business Professionals of America (BPA)
members this week in celebrating BPA Week. Delphos
members include Shirley Gilbert, Laurie Bonifas, Chris

hostess. The afternoon meeting was opened with a poem read
by Mrs. M. C. Maloney. Mrs. Orville Wagner led in prayer and
Nora Link gave the devotions.
Rose Nolte entertained the Charity Workers Club at her
home on North Pierce Street Wednesday night. In cards, first
prizes went to Mrs. Gene Rode and Leona Laudick. A lunch
was served to the members by Nolte. The next meeting will be
in two weeks at the home of Viola Grothouse.

VAN WERT The Van Wert County Extension office is

currently taking order for turkey pullets to be exhibited at the
2015 Jr. Fair. In an effort to focus on exhibitors efforts and
knowledge of turkeys the Jr. Fair Board has voted to only
allow those turkeys received through the Coopers bulk order
to be exhibited at the 2015 Van Wert County Jr. Fair.
The first five turkeys are free of cost (can be ordered as
hens, toms or a straight run combination). After the first five,
birds can be ordered at an additional cost.
Cost of extra pullets is as follows: Hens at $3.25/pullet,
Straight Run at $3.25/pullet, and Toms at $4.00/pullet.
Orders must be placed no later than 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27.
Pullets will be available for pickup at the Extension office
from 1-4 p.m. April 3. Members that order will be mailed a
reminder card when the date approaches.
Again, it is important to take into account that only turkeys
ordered through this bulk order will be allowed to exhibit at
the Van Wert County Jr. Fair in 2015. Please take the time to
order before the deadline passes.

on Agings Long-Term Care
Ombudsman Program serves
the elderly population receiving long-term care. This
includes residents of nursing homes, assisted living
facilities and some in-home
care. An ombudsman visits
residents; learns their needs,
desires, and problems and
advocates for the rights of
these residents.
The agency covers seven
counties: Allen, Auglaize,
Hancock, Hardin, Mercer,
Putnam and Van Wert counties.
Volunteers are needed in
each county to service this
vulnerable population.
Training sessions will be
starting soon to certify volunteers as ombudsman associates.
Volunteers who pass
a background check will
receive free training and the
support needed to be effective
in this role.

their first side-by-side appearance, the leaders of Ohios
Republican and Democratic
parties split Thursday on the
legalization of marijuana, the
strength of a potential presidential run by Republican
Gov. John Kasich, and the
re-election possibilities for
Republican U.S. Senator Rob
Portman.
Asked if marijuana would
be legal within five years,
Democratic Chairman David
Pepper predicted it would
and said politicians should be
proactive in addressing the
issue to protect Ohio interests.
Folks in politics and public service in Ohio should
have a thoughtful conversation about how thats done
in a way that makes sense,
that protects certain interests,
especially our young folks,
Pepper said during a debate
at the Ohio Newspaper
Associations annual convention.
Pepper said Ohio should
learn from its experience with
casinos and the influence of
outside interests on the constitutional ballot measure that
authorized them.
Republican
Chairman
Matt Borges gave support to
some type of medical marijuana legislation but said
legalizing marijuana for recreational use must be stopped.
It should not come to
Ohio, it wont come to Ohio,
its totally unpopular with all
voters. And everything that
needs to be done, to prevent
legalized marijuana from
coming to Ohio, ought to be
done, Borges said.
He said politicians from
both parties should stand
together to oppose it.
Both are relatively new to
their positions. Borges, the
Kasich pick, overcame a tea
party challenge to take the
helm of Ohios GOP in 2013.
Pepper, a 2014 candidate for
Ohio attorney general, succeeded long-time chairman
Chris Redfern in December.
Borges was enthusiastic
about Kasich running for
president, though he said
Kasich and his family would
have to decide if they want to
tackle such a grueling undertaking.
I hope he runs, he would
make a great candidate, he
would make a great president, Borges said.
Pepper disagreed, saying
Kasich has balanced Ohios
budget by cutting funding to
local governments and forcing them to raise taxes.
If he were to run the
country, I hope he would do it
very differently than hes run
the state, Pepper said.

To be honest
Sometimes being honest may seem brutal and impolite. And indeed sometimes it
is. Just because something is true does not mean that it needs to be said. But, telling
people what we really think is sometimes necessary. Do we want to spend our free
time with obnoxious people? Sounds awful, right? Then perhaps we shouldnt say
wed love to. This takes courage, and tact, but it will spare feelings, ours and theirs,
in the long run. Most of the time a polite rejection of an invitation will do the trick
and the person gets the hint, but other times our very politeness seems to invite them
back for more. That is when we may need to be honest and tell the person that we are
not comfortable spending time with them. This should be done in a way that is honest
and yet gentle. Often when we are tempted to start a sentence with the phrase To be
honest we are searching for a tactful way to say no, or perhaps concocting a white
lie. Usually this phrase (to be honest) conceals more of the truth than it reveals.
Mark Twain wryly observed, in one of his posthumous essays, that one of the privileges of the grave is that you can finally tell the truth and say what you think, at least
if you put it in writing. Consider the example of Jesus, who occasionally spoke harsh
truths to men in power, despite the risk to his own comfort and well-being.

That is one area that all
coaches in every sport
strive for, whether it be 48
minutes of high school football or 32 minutes of scholastic basketball.
The Jefferson girls basketballers were slightly
more consinsent than their
Spencerville counterparts
Thursday night, allowing
them to send three seniors
playing their final home
games in front of the Wildcat
faithful out on a winning
note via a 42-36 Northwest
Conference conquest of the
Lady Bearcats.
Those were Brooke Culp
(9 markers, 6 boards, 2 assists,
2 steals), Shelby Koenig (4
markers, 7 blocks, 5 caroms)
and Heather Pohlman.
Every time you lose
seniors, you always miss
them. They have given you
four years of hard work and
effort and they have really
been leaders for this team
this season, Jefferson mentor Dave Hoffman explained.
The Black Attack (6-13,
1-6 NWC) led 22-14 at the
half behind 14 markers (four
treys) from senior Emilee
Meyer. Jefferson switched
from a 1-2-2 zone either
full- or half-court into a

Shooting was the most

obvious stat of the night:
Jefferson (8-12, 3-4) was
15-of-36 from the field (1-of4 downtown) for 41.7 percent
versus a chilly 11-of-47 for
the Bearcats (5-of-17 long
range) for 23.4 percent.
We have suffered a major
scoring slump the last few
games. We have fallen too
much in love with the 3-point
shot and they havent gone
down, Spencerville head
coach Greg Ekis noted. I
would like us to be more
aggressive and attack the basket; not only do I want us
to try and get easy shots but
get to the foul line and get
other teams in foul trouble.
With the way were playing
on offense, we have to be so
good on defense. We held a
team to 14 the first half at
their place, which is a good
accomplishment, but if we
arent stopping people, we
arent winning.
In the third canto, the only
tally by the visitors came on
a 3/4-court steal and layin by
Grigsby at 1:22. The Wildcats
had scored the first eight
points of the stanza, tying it
at 22 on a hoop-and-harm by
Culp at 2:18. When freshman
Sarah Miller (6 counters) put
back in an offensive rebound

Lady Wildcats grabbed a

Defiance edges Lady Cougars, 38-35

VAN WERT They say that a good
defense will make up for a sluggish
offense usually.
That didnt happen for Van Wert
Thursday night as Defiance rallied in the
fourth quarter for a 38-35 win.
The Lady Bulldogs are 12-8 overall
and 5-3 in the Western Buckeye League.
The Lady Cougars are 6-15 and 1-7.
Despite some frigid second-half
shooting, the hosts were holding onto
a 31-28 lead when the visitors super
freshman, Emily Poling, banked in a
10-foot runner. Then, after a Van Wert
miss, she was fouled in the backcourt
and split her two free throws, tying
the score at 31-31 with 3:33 left in the
game.
Two straight Cougar turnovers led to
layups by Lauren Schrag and Morgan
Porter and a 35-31 Defiance lead at the
1:45 mark.

Emma Kohn muscled her way inside,
was fouled and swished both free
throws, making it 35-33, Dogs, at 1:13.
The Bulldogs missed the front of a
1-and-1 but Van Wert turned it over
again, and Poling hit two free throws to
lead by four.

layup for Alexis Dowdy and, agian, the
Cougars were within two at 37-35 with 29

to get off a shot in the closing seconds.
Offensively, we just couldnt get anything going, said Cougar coach Lance
Moonshower. We were really stagnant
against their zone. I cant explain it. We
get to standing around, not cutting, not
really penetrating the seams. We got

some good looks that we normally make,
shots that those girls would want taken,
and we just couldnt knock them in.

Lady Knights clinch share of

NWC with drubbing of Mustangs

CONVOY Its another banner year for the Crestview

Lady Knights.
Crestview clinched at least a share of the Northwest
Conference championship with a 69-27 win over the Lady
Mustangs of Allen East at Ray Etzler Gymnasium on Thursday
night.
It is the 17th Northwest Conference championship for the
Lady Knights program.
At 20-0 (7-0 NWC), the Lady Knights are poised to capture
even bigger trophies this season, but a NWC title is always
the first goal. Crestview head coach Greg Rickard, who has
overseen 10 of those conference crowns, knows there is work
that is still to be done.
We dont want to share it with anybody, Rickard said
with a smile after the game. Hopefully, we can get it next
week.
Crestview senior Kennis Mercer has, at times, been the
forgotten player among the star-laden Lady Knight lineup.
On Thursday, she dominated the game, right from the start,
but did so by collecting three offensive rebounds in the first
two possessions and five rebounds in total in the first quarter.
At 5-6, shes one of the shorter players on the court but her
contribution on the glass helped the Lady Knights build a 17-7
lead after one period.
Mercer wound up with 10 rebounds but turned her attention
to the scoring column as the game went on, connecting on all
five of her field goal attempts, including 3-for-3 from beyond
the arc, to post a game-high 16 points.
She had a double-double, she shoots really well and had
some boards, Rickard said of Mercers night.

Allen East (9-11, 4-3 NWC), meanwhile, discovered the sledding to be tougher as the game progressed. Rickard employed
zone defense to try to slow down the Mustang penetration and it
worked. After a 38 percent opening period, Allen East was held
to just 8-for-25 shooting (32 percent) the rest of the way. The
Mustangs misfired on all 10 of their 3-point tries.
We ended up going with some zone a little bit. They were
kind of beating us with some penetration, so we went zone to
try to slow them down, Rickard added. That made it a lot
harder for them to get to the rim and I dont know if they made
many perimeter shots.
Emily Bauer had another strong game for the Knights,
not only establishing herself as a scoring threat, she finished
with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, but also grabbing seven
rebounds and dishing out a team-high five assists. Paige
Motycka added 10 points off the bench while Lindsey Motycka
scored nine.
Perhaps the biggest strength of the Lady Knight team is
their depth, especially on offense.
If someone goes box-and-1 or triangle-and 2 (against
Crestviews offense), youre leaving people open, Rickard
explained. Weve just got way too many people that can
score. That makes it tough for people playing against you
defensively.
Crestview built 32-15 advantage by halftime and extended
the lead to as many as 30 in the third quarter when Allen Easts
Carly Clum had to sit with foul trouble. Clum returned to start
the fourth quarter and ignited a mini Mustang run but Mercers
14-footer-and-1 with six minutes left in the game made it a
53-25 game. Crestview rattled off 16 of the games final 18
points to run away with the win.
Crestview hosts Wayne Trace Monday.

Lancer rally falls

short versus Ada

MIDDLE POINT Four Lincolnview seniors laced up
their sneakers for the last time in front of the Lancer faithful
at Lincolnview High School against the Ada Lady Bulldogs
on Thursday night in Northwest Conference girls basketball
action.
It was a hard-fought game which featured a late second-half
rally by the Lady Lancers but it wasnt enough to pull out the
win as Ada picked up the 56-51 victory.
We wanted to get them out of here with a win but Ada is
a very good team. They have 17 wins and we took them down
to the wire, Lancer head coach Dan Williamson noted. They
had some shots that bounced in and we had some shots bounce
out and I think that was the difference in the game.
Early in the first period two fouls shots from senior Alexis
Amburgey brought the score to 4-3, Lady Bulldogs.
Lincolnview (12-9, 3-4 NWC) then drained back-to-back
3-pointer from senior Hannah McCleery and senior Julia
Thatcher to give the Lady Lancers a 9-4 lead.
Ada countered with a sophomore Haley Wyss trey and
senior Tori Wyss layup to even the game up at 9-9 but
Lincolnview ended the first period with a 12-11 lead thanks to
another trey from McCleery.
The Lady Bulldogs got an offensive burst from Tori Wyss
and Amburgey in the second period as the duo scored seven
and six points, respectively. Midway through the second quarter, Lancer junior Ashton Bowersock converted a 3-point play
to cut the Ada lead to 18-17.
After Ada (17-4, 5-1 NWC) pushed ahead, freshman Alana
Williams used a layup to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 26-21
before Adas Lindsay Walden got a last-second bucket to make
it 28-21 at the break.
The Lady Lancers seemed to be in trouble early in the third
quarter, as an Amburgey triple brought the score 33-23, Ada.
The Lancers cut into the lead thanks to two 3-pointers, one
from McCleery and one from Thatcher. After the Thatcher
trey, McCleery went coast-to-coast after a steal to bring
Lincolnview to within four at 35-31.
Three points from senior Stephanie Longwell and a bucket
from Bowersock to end the third period cut the Ada lead down
to one at 39-38 and the two teams fought back and forth until
the 3:42 mark, when Haley Wyss nailed a trey and junior
Rachel Wildman knocked down two foul shots to put the
Bulldogs up by five at 49-44.
A Bowersock triple would cut the Ada lead to 53-49 and,
later on, a McCleery layup made it 54-51 Lady Bulldogs. Ada
was able to go 9-for-13 from the free throw, however, to ice
the game.
They did what good teams do that is make foul shots we
they have to and they did. I cant say enough about our seniors
they give me 32 hard minutes every night and tonight they
played well enough to win we just didnt get the shots to fall
tonight, said Lancer coach Williamson.
Ada had two scorers in double figures as Tori Wyss had 19
points and Amburgey chipped in with 13 points. Bowersock
led the Lancers with 18 points and McCleery added 15.
Lincolnview visits Paulding Thursday.

another strong signal that
their recent struggles might
be behind them.
They won their fourth
straight after dropping 10 of
15 and entered the All-Star
break with a 1 1/2-game lead
in the Central division over
the Cavaliers.
Chicago led most of the
way against the NBAs hottest
team and pulled away in the
fourth quarter.
Both teams were missing
key players, with Chicagos
Jimmy Butler nursing a
strained right shoulder and
Clevelands Kevin Love out
with an abrasion in his right
eye. But the Bulls did enough
to come out on top.
Rose was aggressive from
the start, going right at the
rim, and finished two points
shy of his season high.

Gasol posted his 14th
straight double-double, the
longest streak by a Bulls
player since Michael Jordans

Snell came up big again
after scoring a career-high
24 against Sacramento on
Tuesday. He shot 9-of-11 for
the second straight game.
Joakim Noah added 10
points, 15 rebounds and seven
assists and Taj Gibson scored
13.
With Love sidelined,
James had little help. Kyrie
Irving finished with 17 points
but was 6-of-18 from the
field. Timofey Mozgov added
13 points and 11 rebounds.
Up by seven at halftime,
the Bulls scored the first eight
points of the third quarter to
increase their lead to 63-48.
The Cavaliers made a
run late in the period, closing within eight on James
Jones 3 in the closing seconds. But Rose drove left and
cut between two defenders
for a neat reverse layup just
before the buzzer, drawing
loud cheers from the crowd
and sending Chicago to the
fourth quarter with an 87-77
lead.

Titans led by seniors

in defeat of Dawgs

OTTAWA Ottawa-Glandorf paid tribute to its five
seniors before squaring off against Elida Thursday evening.
Those five seniors then went out and got the Titans rolling as they raced past the young Bulldogs 76-46 in Western
Buckeye League action at the Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium.
O-G moves to 7-1 in the WBL and 18-2 overall, with their
12th straight win, while the Bulldogs are 3-5 in the league and
8-13 overall.
Despite the margin of victory, it took the Titans a little time
to get rolling with a different starting lineup the five seniors.
Elida was up 4-2 after a basket by freshman Shyah Wheeler
three minutes into the game. Thats when O-G started to roll
as their defensive pressure started to force turnovers and the
offense started to click as the Titans went on a 16-0 run led
by senior Elissa Ellerbrock with seven points and senior Erin
Basinger with four points. Wheeler stopped the run with a
putback with 1:35 left before Ellerbrock and Basinger went
back-to-back for a 23-6 O-G lead. A putback by Abby Waddle
left the Bulldogs trailing 22-8 after eight minutes.
The seniors played well, O-G coach Troy Yant said. It
took them a little while to get started, with the new lineup, I
think they were trying to figure out who was playing where.
Elissa dropped in 11 points the first quarter and that kind of
helped us get unstuck. After that, things came kind of pretty
easy and everyone got into the game. It was one of those downhill games where you just get out and run.
While Ottawa-Glandorf didnt match their first quarter
offensive output they were able to widen their lead with a
17-9 scoring advantage. The Titans were up 14 points with
3:07 left in the half before going a 7-0 run that gave them a
21 point lead. The Titans settled for a 22 point halftime lead
as senior Danielle Schroeder ended the first half scoring with
a three-pointer.
The Titans broke the game wide open in the early minutes
of the third quarter as they were up 31 points at 54-23. Three of
O-Gs baskets in this run came via Elida turnovers. Although
the Bulldogs started the second half slow they started playing
better later in the quarter as they nearly matched their first half
offense by scoring 15 points in the third quarter.
Although the Bulldogs deficit was too much to overcome,
their play in the second half drew praise from co-coach Chrissy
Billiter.
We just wanted to come in here and compete, Billiter
said. Our girls never gave up, I think that was obvious, no
matter who we had in the game, if we had our subs in or our
starting five, they played hard. As a coach thats all we can
ask for. O-G is a very good team. They are physical, they are
fast and they shoot well. We just wanted to come in here and
compete.
The only excitement left for the fourth quarter was whether
Elissa Ellerbrock could break the O-G school record for points
in a game. While coach Yant had planned on pulling his seniors
one at time late in the fourth, he left Ellerbrock in when told
she was closing in on the record. Ellerbrock broke the record
in final seconds on a baseline jumper. The previous record was
34 points by Melanie Halker in 1995 at Paulding.
We had told the girls to slow the pace down in the fourth
quarter but coach told me she was 6-8 points away from the
record and we let her on the floor after we took the other
seniors out to see if she could hit a shot or two. The girls wanted her to have the record, Yant said.
Danielle Schroeder finished with 10 points for the Titans
and Kylie White finished with nine.
Bailee Kuhn paced Elida with 19 points and Abby Waddle
had 12 points. Wheeler chipped in 10 points.
We keep stressing the inside game because we are a
guard-oriented team, Billiter said. We keep telling our
guards if you look in the post more, it takes some pressure off
you as guards. The first half they were trying, but we were
forcing it. The second half we did a lot better. Bailee Kuhn had
probably one of the best games we have seen her play going up
against big physical post players like O-G has.

The Bulls led by as much as 15 in the first half and took a

55-48 edge to the locker room thanks to strong starts by Rose,
Gasol and Gibson.
Rose was in attack mode early on, scoring 13 and playing
turnover-free ball. Gasol added 12 points. Gibson scored 10
and the Bulls had 15 assists on 22 field goals.
James scored 12 in the half for Cleveland. But with Irving
hitting just 2 of 9 shots and Mozgov picking up three fouls, the
Cavaliers had a tough time.
The Bulls went on a 13-3 run in the second quarter, bumping their lead from 39-34 to 52-37 with just under four minutes remaining. Mozgov picked up his third foul going for a
rebound with Taj Gibson and headed to the sideline during
that stretch.
Noah finished the run with a tip-in, making it a 15-point game.

Cavaliers: James had four assists, giving him 6,118 in his
career and putting him in sole possession of second place on
the NBAs all-time list among forwards. He came in tied with

it looked like the St. Johns
Lady Blue Jays basketball
team was turning the corner
after nearly upsetting the No.
1 team in the state (Marion
Local) last week, things went
wrong.
The Versailles Lady Tigers
came to the Robert A. Arnzen
Gymnasium and handed
the Jays a 56-22 Midwest
Athletic Conference loss.
Versailles was definitely the aggressor tonight on
the floor, commented longtime St. Johns girls coach
Dan Grothouse. We had
no purpose tonight on the
court and that led to no ball
movement. The Tigers were
taller and played an aggressive trapping defense that
caused our offense problems
all night. I really thought that
this team was showing great
improvement but we really
took a step backwards tonight
against a better team.
Versailles opened the
game with a 9-0 run as four
different Lady Tigers got in
the scoring column on 4-for4 shooting. Blue Jay senior
Rebekah Fischer finally got
the Lady Jays on the scoreboard with 5:49 remaining
in the first quarter with a
3-pointer. After a Versailles
bucket, Lexie Hays drilled a
triple as the Jays trailed 11-6.
The taller Tigers took advantage on offense as 6-2 Christa
Puthoff lobbed the ball inside
to Taylor Winner on consecutive processions as Versailles
finished the period like they
began on with a 7-0 to lead
18-6.
The Tigers offense continued to score at will as

to take a 27-11 lead into the

In the first half, the Blue
Jays were without a field
goal on eight attempts from

Tigers stiff defense. St.
Johns was respectable from
long range with 3-of-8 shooting but committed nine turnovers.
The Jays showed good

third quarter as they worked
the ball around inside until
Fischbach got open for
a bucket in the paint. The
Tigers notched another scoring streak to blow the game
open. St. Johns continued
to pound the ball inside with
some success as Hays and
Fischbach connected but the
Lady Jays trailed 44-17 after
three quarters.
Versailles continued to
do whatever they wanted to
offensively as Winner passed
inside to Puthoff for two.

and were 3-of-8 on 3-point
attempts.
St. Johns falls to 2-6 in
the MAC and 8-12 overall.
Leading the offense were

and Hays with six. St. Johns
made only four field goals
for 19-percent shooting and
cooled off in the second half
on 3-point attempts, making
3-of-11.
The Blue Jays turned the
ball over 21 times compared
to 14 for the Lady Tigers.

and the Jays had 18.
Versailles also won the
junior varsity game, outscoring St. Johns 27-6 in two

Puppies, rings, mullets highlight Daytona 500 media day

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Daytona 500 media day
included lots of talk about puppy love, wedding rings and
a growing mullet and conversations about four-time champion Jeff Gordon and possibly his final ride in NASCARS
most prestigious race.
NASCARs biggest stars took center stage for the annual event held inside Daytona International Speedway on
Thursday.
Danica Patrick defended the GoDaddy puppy commercial
that was pulled from the Super Bowl after criticism from
animal-rights groups, saying people have an opinion about
everything, especially when you get into that world of animal
rights or tree rights or whatever rights. Defending Sprint Cup
champion Kevin Harvick welcomed the challenge of trying to
repeat.
Embattled driver Kurt Busch insisted he would be in the
car all season despite a lingering court case involving a former
girlfriend. And 2012 champion Brad Keselowski said he was
one of the series three best drivers after a fiery 2014 season
that included fisticuffs and bruised feelings.
Those were just some of the highlights. Here are the others:
Cougars
Both teams played 2-3 zones for the

most part and neither team had much
luck penetrating or hitting over the top
of the defenses. The first quarter was the
only exception. Van Wert led 12-11 after
the first eight minutes and had hit 5 of 7
field goal attempts, including a 12-foot
baseline jumper by senior Emily Bair, the
only field goal outside the paint that the
Cougars would make in the entire game.
The Cougars led 23-20 at the half. At
that point, Defiance had hit only 7 of 20
shots and 3 of 7 free throws. However,
three of the Bulldog buckets (two by
Poling) came from 3-point land, which
kept the visitors close. Van Wert missed
all six of its long-range shots, and only
one of those misses even hit iron. At

The teams traded baskets

to open the fourth: Jayden
Smith at 7:45 for the guests
and junior Jessica Pimpas
at 7:31 for the hosts. From
there, after the Red and
White tacked on a Culp basket at 5:40, the visitors scored
the next five points to take
their final lead of 31-30 on a
foul shot by Meyer at 4:05.
Junior Tori Black (6 markers, 4 boards, 3 thefts) hit
two from the charity line at
3:49 to give the home team a
lead they never relinquished.
After a trade of points: a
Devyn Carder putback for
the hosts and a short jumper
by Megan Miller (4 assists, 3
steals) at 2:30 for the Black
Attack, Grigsby fouled out
at 2:29. From then, Jefferson
was 4-of-4 at the line and
2-of-2 from the field to salt
the game away.
Our change in defenses
to the triangle was the key.
EARNHARDTS PHOBIA: NASCARs biggest star has a

little phobia. Dale Earnhardt Jr. revealed that he wants nothing
to do with jewelry. Necklaces, rings, bracelets, no way.
Its creepy to me, said the two-time and defending
Daytona 500 champion. I can be in the same room with it. It
doesnt bother me on other people.
Earnhardt and his longtime girlfriend, Amy Reimann,
already have talked about what might happen down the road if
they get married. Earnhardt has no plans to give in, saying he
wont wear a ring but will get her one if she wants.
Im not going to be held accountable and she can do whatever she wants, he said. I figure if we ever get to that step in
life that I owe her that much, so Ill have to put up with that.
But Im free of all my obligations in that regard.

BOWYER BOMBS: Clint Bowyer doesnt believe in
omens, but he looks back at last years Daytona 500 as an
indication he was in for a disappointing season.
Bowyer sat through a lengthy rain delay, only to suffer an
engine failure when the race resumed.
He finished 42nd and left Daytona ranked 39th in the
standings. Bowyer went on to his second consecutive winless
season and failed to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
one point Van Wert had a 21-17 lead, its

biggest lead of the game.
The cold shooting continued in the
third quarter, which was a 6-6 tie, leaving Van Wert ahead by three, but a disastrous fourth quarter led to the loss. The
Cougars were 2 for 12 from the field in
the final eight minutes and turned it over
eight times.
For the game as a whole, Van Wert
shot 32 percent (12 of 37) from the field,
including 4 of 22 in the second half. The
Cougars were 0-for-10 from long range.
Defiance was only slightly better with
38 percent (13 of 34). Van Wert was
much better from the line, hitting 73
percent (11 of 15) to Defiances 50 percent (9 of 18). The Cougars had a 24-22
rebounding edge. The Bulldogs had one
less turnover, 18-19.
We took away their two best

scorers; Meyer was hurting
us on 3s the first half and she
didnt get much the second,
Hoffman added. We also
became more aggressive the
second half. We moved the
ball better and attacked the
basket.
Turnovers were the culprit for the Wildcats in the
first period, giving it over
seven times (22 for the game)
to two for the visitors (14).
Spencerville couldnt quite
take advantage with 4-of15 shooting vs. 3-of-10 for
Delphos. A Meyer triple put
the Bearcats up 12-6 before
two Black singles at 56.5
seconds put Delphos within
12-8.
The teams matched made
fielders in the second period: three each. The different
was the Bearcats were triples
by Meyer, with her bomb
from the left wing at 55 ticks
accounting for their 22-14
halftime spread.
Defensively, I cant ask for anything

more 38 points, said Moonshower.
We made Poling work for her points.
I thought we did a nice job with their
bigs, and they had size on us. We had a
lot of stops on crucial possessions, but
we gave it right back to them.
Only five Cougars scored, led by
Dowdy, Dunlap, and Erin Morrow with
12, 8, and 8. Poling and Morgan Porter
led Defiance with 14 and 8.
It was the last home game for Van
Wert seniors Dowdy, Dunlap, Morrow,
Bair, Riley Jones and Elizabeth Keirns.
The Cougar junior varsity is now 13-8
after a 41-34 win. Cassidy Myers, Alexis
Rupert, and Phoebe Eutsler led Van Werts
scoring with 12, 10, and 10. Defiance (136) was led by Morgan Wityk and Laney
Baldwin with 11 and 10.
In sum, Spencerville
netted 9-of-14 at the line
(64.3%); nabbed 27 rebounds
(16 offensive); and totaled
13 fouls.
Overall, Jefferson was
11-of-12 at the line (91.7%);
grabbed 33 off the glass (10
offensive); and added 16
fouls.

Spencerville 8-2 in overtime
to secure a 38-32 junior varsity contest.

our retirement home five years
ago. Even though were not retired, we were able to move in. We
are now 3 1/2 hours away from

hospitality at holiday or vacation

However, one of my brothers has

We have a lovely log cabin on
a lake, and it can accommodate
ALL family members for a gathering. Our relatives cite the long
drive as the reason for staying
away, while they think nothing
of taking a hunting or fishing trip
nearby.
I have stopped asking. My mom
thinks I should continue extending invitations. Truthfully, it is a
hospitality, because it should be

apparent that the ones who have
declined are not interested. And
explain that to your mother, who
long ago should have stopped telling you what to do.

This was obviously very innocent, said
Todd Feinman, the chief executive of data security firm Identity Finder who audited the Bush
email database and provided the results to The
Associated Press. But now we have more than
12,000 individuals who are exposed to the risks
of identity fraud.
Using the website jebemails.com, Bush posted the emails online Tuesday. While Bushs
spokeswoman said the emails numbered about
275,000, Feinman said his audit showed about
333,000 messages.
By Thursday, the private information from
all but a few hundred of the emails had been
removed, Feinman said.

wouldnt confirm Identity Finders report that
more than 12,000 people had their private
information in the emails but said that we have
redacted every account that we have found.
Floridas public records law is among the
nations strongest, and the states archive kept
copies of every email sent to and from Bushs
personal email address while he served as governor from 1999 to 2007.
Bush had taken some steps to keep some of
the sensitive information in the emails out of
the publics view. His team asked the Florida
Department of State for the emails in order to
set up the website. When doing so last May, his
attorney specified Social Security numbers of
Florida citizens who contacted Gov. Bush for
assistance should be redacted.
A spokesman for the Florida Department of
State did not reply Thursday to phone and email
messages from The Associated Press.
Social Security numbers are confidential
under Florida law, except under certain circumstances, including allowing such information to
be shared between agencies. The vast majority
of those included in Bushs emails were part of
a spreadsheet tracking the number of people on
a state family service waiting list, which was
included in a PowerPoint presentation sent to
Bush ahead of a 2003 meeting.
American Sniper suspect told cop he took couple of souls
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) A police officer told a Texas

jury Thursday that a former Marine charged in the deaths of two
men, including American Sniper author Chris Kyle, told him he
had taken a couple of souls and had more to take.
A police video displayed for the jury showed officers in
Lancaster, near Dallas, trying to coax Eddie Ray Routh from a truck
in the hours after famed Navy SEAL Kyle and his friend Chad
Littlefield were found dead at a shooting range in February 2013.
He told us hed taken a couple of souls and he had more souls to
take, Lancaster police Lt. Michael Smith said Thursday of Routh.
Defense attorneys have said Routh, 27, was insane when Kyle
and Littlefield took him to a shooting range to provide support and
camaraderie. Routh believed the men planned to kill him, his attorneys say. Routh faces life in prison without parole if convicted.
The case has drawn intense interest, largely because of Kyles
memoir, American Sniper, about serving four tours in Iraq. The

D.C., for the March for Life and began her
online Research Writing class.
My grades havent really changed. Im
still in NHS, Liturgy Team, Yearbook and Jr.
Optimist and thinking about auditioning for
the musical this spring, Winhover said. I
enjoy AP Literature and Composition which
is showing me a very different style of writing
than what Im used to.
Corzine said he is in wrestling right now
and the team just won the NWC championship for the second time since his freshman
year. He said after wrestling, his high school
sports career will be finished.
My grades are alright. I enjoy

Officers testified Thursday that hours after the bodies were discovered, Routh returned to his home in Lancaster, driving Kyles
pickup. Officers spoke with him as he sat in the pickup, but he
refused to leave the vehicle.
Routh is heard in the police video heard asking for his parents.
Police eventually get them on the phone and he briefly talks to them.
At different points in the video, Routh made comments including,
I didnt sleep a wink last night at all, I dont know if Im going
insane, and, Is this about hell walking on earth right now?
R. Shay Isham, one of Rouths defense attorneys, brought up parts
of the audio that were difficult to hear on the video. Routh asked at
one point if the apocalypse was on them right now, Isham said.
Authorities say Routh had earlier driven to his sisters house, admitted to the killings and told his sister that people were sucking his soul.

Heiing said the schools guidance counselor, Alan Unterbrink, has given students a list
of local scholarships and he has been looking
into many of them.
I have narrowed my colleges down to
Ohio Northern University and the University
of Toledo. I have been accepted into Toledo
and I am still waiting on a reply from ONU
about my interview, Heiing added. I plan on
majoring in Pharmacy.
Winhover said she has been knee-deep in
scholarships; applying to all the scholarships
Unterbrink has recommended and researching
scholarships online through Fastweb.com and
Scholarships.com.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate on

Thursday confirmed President Barack Obamas
choice to run the Pentagon, handing Ash Carter
the unenviable task of steering the military as the
United States confronts Islamic State militants,
conflict in Ukraine and other worldwide threats.
The overwhelming bipartisan vote in the
Republican-controlled Senate was 93-5. Carter
will replace Chuck Hagel, the former Republican
senator who had a rough relationship with
Obamas insular group of national security advisers.
Carter will be Obamas fourth defense secretary in six years, joining a line of succession
that began with Robert Gates and included Leon
Panetta and Hagel. In a statement, Obama welcomed the bipartisan vote and Carters return to
the presidents national security team.
One of Carters first tasks will be helping to
win support for Obamas call to Congress for
new authority to use force against the IS extremists. Republicans and Democrats have reacted
negatively to Obamas draft proposal, criticizing
both its limitations and vagueness.
In endorsing the 60-year-old Carter,
Republicans expressed little hope that he would
have better success in jelling with Obamas inner
circle than Hagel did. The former Republican
senator and Vietnam War veteran was often the
outsider and he announced in November he was
stepping down.
The presidents relationship with the Pentagon
has often been strained.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,
R-Ky., who backed Carter, said he needs to
have the courage to speak truth to power to
Congress, yes, but also to his commander in
chief.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chairman of the
Armed Services Committee, alluded to the divide
between the White House and Pentagon, saying
he had sincere hope and, sadly, little confidence
that the president who nominated Dr. Carter will
empower him to lead and contribute to the fullest
extent of his abilities.
While moving ahead on Carter, Senate
Republicans delayed a committee vote on Loretta
Lynch, Obamas nominee for attorney general.
Lawmakers said they had more questions for
Lynch, the U.S. attorney for the eastern district
of New York who would become the nations
first black female attorney general if confirmed.
Democrats complained that Lynch is being
held to a double standard compared to other
nominees and said her nomination should be
approved immediately. Her confirmation is
expected after Congress one-week recess.

began applying for financial aid.

in Medical Laboratory Science, Corzine
explained.
Each senior has some advice for those students who will be making the same journey
in the future.
Kramer advised students to start preparing
for college early.
The most difficult aspect of college
preparation would have to be filling out all of
the forms for scholarships and financial aid. It
isnt that they are hard; just tedious and they
take a lot of time to complete. Its never too
early to start looking up colleges and scholarships, Kramer explained. Also, fill out as
many scholarships as possible.
Heiing said the best advice he could give
is to not worry too much. He said there will
be some nerve-racking moments but advises
potential college enrollees to not get caught
up in all of it and take time to step back and
relax.
The most difficult part would have to be
the applications, which require a lot of work,
Heiing insisted. The easiest part would have
to be narrowing the colleges down. While vis-
iting campuses, I could just tell what colleges

were the best fit for me.
Winhover said the first step is determining
and researching interests online as well as
talking with people in that field and job-shadowing them.
Find and visit the schools that offer the
degrees of interest, Winhover added. Make
good use of time on campus by arranging
appointments with department heads and sitting in on a few classes.
When evaluating these schools, Winhover
said to consider the cost and the earnings
potential for any future job. She advises
potential college enrollees to ask about job
placement, merit scholarships and the expected job market after graduation.
A college-bound student may change
their mind about a potential major and career
during the process, Winhover said. It can
be exhausting but dont give up. I struggled
with finding a major right for me but through
a friend of a friend, I found the right match.
Corzine recommends students on the journey to college spend more time enjoying high
school and their friends.
The most difficult part of the college journey has definitely been all the paper work,
Corzine said. The easiest part of the process
has been enjoying my senior year and having
fun with friends.
