projects with prestigious oil and gas
operating companies in Abu Dhabi where
our centre of excellence for offshore
engineering is based.

Global oil, gas and

petrochemicals
Mott MacDonald is one of the largest employee-owned management, engineering and
development consultancies. We have one of the worlds leading oil, gas and petrochemicals
teams, which possesses a wealth of experience gained from over 50 years of work on
projects worldwide. In the early 1960s we were working at many of the UKs refineries for
Shell, BP and Esso. During the 1970s we were also operating in the North Sea designing
production facilities, pipelines and storage and export terminals while setting up a network
of design offices to serve the major oil producers in the Middle East. From the 1980s
onwards we expanded our global presence with many projects in the Middle East as well as
undertaking assignments in areas as diverse as Africa, North America, Asia and Australasia
through a network of offices in over 50 countries.
Today we can take care of every aspect of a project from its initial concept to
techno-economic studies, front end and detailed design, upgrades and optimisation plans,

Mott MacDonald undertook the concept and FEED

for Oman Gas Company for the North Star onshore
production facility in the Musandam Peninsula,
Oman. During the concept phase, equipment
sizing, steady state and transient hydraulic
calculations (using PIPESIM and Pipeline Studio)
and flare calculations were performed.

Conceptual design
As the starting point of any project, the conceptual phase demands lateral thinking and
innovative ideas. Process engineering issues are critical to the success of oil and gas
projects and this is where our process centre of excellence gives us the edge. With a vast
track record in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industry both onshore and offshore we provide
core engineering with detailed design expertise as well as conceptual and front-end design
experience ensuring that the best techno-economic solutions are identified. To make any
project future proof we incorporate safety, quality, environmental and sustainability
measures into the design process from the outset. Our process team benefits from
the Mott MacDonald Groups multidisciplinary skills in core areas of mechanical, piping,
pipeline, control and automation, electrical, cathodic protection, civil and structural
design and engineering.
By using the latest computer simulation and visualisation tools we enhance understanding of
complex behaviours such as real-time dynamic process modelling, pipeline upheaval buckling,
deepwater riser interference and fluid and smoke flow patterns allowing us to deliver
solutions that are better by design. But this is not all we offer as well as benchmarked
in-house programs and proprietary design tools, we also implement integrated design
techniques using programs such as PDS and PDMS. Being part of a truly multidisciplinary
organisation means that we are a one-stop service, capable of taking care of projects from
concept to commissioning.

We enhanced security on the platforms at

the Upper Zakum field in the Arabian Gulf
for ZADCO by converting pneumatic type
instruments to electric/hydraulic type.
This eliminated the use of sour gas
containing high concentrations of the highly
poisonous gas hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

FEED and
detailed design
FEED is the foundation of a successful project. Whatever the type and size of the
infrastructure involved, we deliver award winning front end design and detailed engineering
services plus all technical aspects of procurement. Our multidisciplinary teams include
process engineers supported by mechanical/rotating equipment specialists, piping engineers,
electrical and corrosion specialists, subsea specialists, control and automation engineers,
civil, structural and pipeline engineers.
Complementary services such as 3D modelling, ergonomics, environmental, cartographic,
telecommunications, materials and metallurgy, and power distribution services can be
provided as required. For the successful execution of each project, tailored teams of
specialists are brought together to provide the most cost-effective solution. Front end and
detailed engineering at offshore and onshore locations is often undertaken directly for our
multinational clients. For EPC contracts we are fulfilling detailed engineering and procurement
assignments with major contractors, either in partnership or as a sub-contracted service.

EPCM/PMC
services
We undertake a significant amount of detailed design and procurement work as the
engineering sub-contractor to, or partner with, major EPC contractors.
We work in partnership with our clients within the framework of a project management
consultant (PMC) role and through engineering, procurement and construction management
(EPCM) contracts. Our project management teams are experienced in the use of the full
range of techniques and systems required to deliver successful projects, whether working
as a PMC or in an EPCM contract.

We were awarded an engineering,

maintenance and construction contract

Our integrated services approach is demonstrated through our long-term relationship with
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), to whom weve provided integrated engineering
services for both greenfield and brownfield projects over the past 40 years.
As a PMC we closely integrate with our client, resulting in a single cohesive team to manage
contractors, focused on fulfilling the project aim and business objectives. We monitor,
evaluate, forecast and take corrective action as necessary. Our EPCM teams work with the
same aims and objectives while recognising the different nature of this form of contract.
Mott MacDonalds international network of offices and worldwide systems provide the flexibility
to execute engineering schemes in multiple locations simultaneously, making the most
effective use of valuable resources.

We closely integrate with our

client to form a single cohesive
team fulfilling the project aims

protection systems as well as infrastructure
design of the 5500m2 six-storey facility.
The projects involved total automation under
a distributed control system (DCS) with more
than 1000 inputs/outputs.

Based on a detailed life-cycle cost analysis including assessment of lost production

during unit shutdown for modification and environmental regulatory impact, we are able to
advise our clients when a new unit replacement is more cost-effective than a revamped one.
Moreover, our specialist team offers a complete suite of auxiliary services encompassing all
the petroleum industry-related disciplines. We are able to draw on the worldwide expertise
of colleagues around the Group to design and engineer jetties, tank farms, power and
telecommunications systems, buildings, roads, tunnels, bridges and railways.

Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals are derived from petroleum sources like crude oil and natural gas.
The petrochemical industry is undergoing dramatic transformation with the Middle East
consolidating its position as a major petrochemical hub, China emerging as important
processing and end user market and India an already established international player in
the production of petrochemical and petrochemical-related products seeking modernisation
to remain competitive.
