We undertake specialist evaluations and assessments for lending agencies, national
and international energy companies, governments and project developers, considering
all strategic, implementation and operational aspects using bespoke in-house teams.
We have a solid track record in master planning, institutional reform and restructuring,
asset valuations, regulatory advice and related issues such as technology transfer and
training. We are also highly respected for our specialist services, including privatisation
support, transaction and restructuring support, technical audits and expert witness work.
With environmental and sustainability concerns at the forefront of most oil and gas projects
our strong in-house environmental capability enables us to examine the possible effects
of our clients plans and strategies on the wider socio environment then recommend
and implement optimum management regimes.
Conceptual design
As the starting point of any project, the conceptual phase demands lateral thinking and
innovative ideas. Process engineering issues are critical to the success of oil and gas
projects and this is where our process centre of excellence gives us the edge. With a vast
track record in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industry both onshore and offshore we provide
core engineering with detailed design expertise as well as conceptual and front-end design
experience ensuring that the best techno-economic solutions are identified. To make any
project future proof we incorporate safety, quality, environmental and sustainability
measures into the design process from the outset. Our process team benefits from
the Mott MacDonald Groups multidisciplinary skills in core areas of mechanical, piping,
pipeline, control and automation, electrical, cathodic protection, civil and structural
design and engineering.
By using the latest computer simulation and visualisation tools we enhance understanding of
complex behaviours such as real-time dynamic process modelling, pipeline upheaval buckling,
deepwater riser interference and fluid and smoke flow patterns allowing us to deliver
solutions that are better by design. But this is not all we offer as well as benchmarked
in-house programs and proprietary design tools, we also implement integrated design
techniques using programs such as PDS and PDMS. Being part of a truly multidisciplinary
organisation means that we are a one-stop service, capable of taking care of projects from
concept to commissioning.
FEED and
detailed design
FEED is the foundation of a successful project. Whatever the type and size of the
infrastructure involved, we deliver award winning front end design and detailed engineering
services plus all technical aspects of procurement. Our multidisciplinary teams include
process engineers supported by mechanical/rotating equipment specialists, piping engineers,
electrical and corrosion specialists, subsea specialists, control and automation engineers,
civil, structural and pipeline engineers.
Complementary services such as 3D modelling, ergonomics, environmental, cartographic,
telecommunications, materials and metallurgy, and power distribution services can be
provided as required. For the successful execution of each project, tailored teams of
specialists are brought together to provide the most cost-effective solution. Front end and
detailed engineering at offshore and onshore locations is often undertaken directly for our
multinational clients. For EPC contracts we are fulfilling detailed engineering and procurement
assignments with major contractors, either in partnership or as a sub-contracted service.
EPCM/PMC
services
We undertake a significant amount of detailed design and procurement work as the
engineering sub-contractor to, or partner with, major EPC contractors.
We work in partnership with our clients within the framework of a project management
consultant (PMC) role and through engineering, procurement and construction management
(EPCM) contracts. Our project management teams are experienced in the use of the full
range of techniques and systems required to deliver successful projects, whether working
as a PMC or in an EPCM contract.
Our integrated services approach is demonstrated through our long-term relationship with
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), to whom weve provided integrated engineering
services for both greenfield and brownfield projects over the past 40 years.
As a PMC we closely integrate with our client, resulting in a single cohesive team to manage
contractors, focused on fulfilling the project aim and business objectives. We monitor,
evaluate, forecast and take corrective action as necessary. Our EPCM teams work with the
same aims and objectives while recognising the different nature of this form of contract.
Mott MacDonalds international network of offices and worldwide systems provide the flexibility
to execute engineering schemes in multiple locations simultaneously, making the most
effective use of valuable resources.
Pipelines
From major gas gathering schemes to large diameter transmission pipelines, our specialist
engineers have extensive knowledge of the design, engineering and operational criteria for
overland and subsea pipelines, the associated pumping, compression and pressure control
facilities, and in-field gathering and gas distribution systems. We have been commissioned
to provide complete oil, gas and water transmission systems for world class projects in the
most challenging environments. Our service includes all associated pumping, treatment,
booster, pressure reduction and metering, pigging and block valve stations.
Surge calculations, corrosion analysis and hydraulic modelling of multiphase flow are just
some of the skills we offer in addition to mainstream engineering. We also carry out
advanced structural and reliability analysis to prove pipeline integrity in operation. We
are up-to-date with all the latest design requirements for oil and gas pipelines especially
for protection against corrosion and prevention of crude solidification, hydrate formation
and hydrogen-induced cracking.
Our expertise covers all aspects of engineering from initial, high level feasibility study work,
through conceptual and detailed design, project engineering, construction, installation, project
commissioning and commercial operation. Attendant services include programming, planning,
inspection, procurement and project management.
Our offshore experience covers every facet of subsea pipeline design including stability,
coating, wrapping, cathodic protection, pipelay analysis and rock dumping.
Refineries
Refinery projects are normally billion dollar developments designed around core refinery
process units. We have been involved in all stages of refinery development from concept
studies to development. From single process unit-specific issues through to entire refinery
configuration definition, we work with developers, financial institutions and national or local
government agencies.
Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals are derived from petroleum sources like crude oil and natural gas.
The petrochemical industry is undergoing dramatic transformation with the Middle East
consolidating its position as a major petrochemical hub, China emerging as important
processing and end user market and India an already established international player in
the production of petrochemical and petrochemical-related products seeking modernisation
to remain competitive.
Mott MacDonald possesses extensive knowledge and expertise covering all stages and
components of a petrochemical unit development including preparation of techno-economic
feasibility reports, licensor selection, cost estimation as well as basic engineering, detailed
engineering and overall project management.
Terminals and
storage
In order to ensure the most effective engineering solutions and guarantee the efficiency
of projects in any location worldwide, we offer the advantage of total in-house capability
covering all aspects of terminals for storage, handling and distribution of crude oil,
oil products, liquid chemicals and gas products.
Most of the terminals we design are integrated with bulk storage tank farms,
bunkering facilities, tanker truck loading racks, blending facilities, associated piping
and pumping facilities.
Our expertise covers all stages and components of a terminals development, from feasibility
and techno-economic studies, concept, basic and detailed engineering to regulatory
approvals, tendering assistance and procurement and construction management.
We have an excellent track record of providing services to a wide spectrum of clients, many
of whom enjoy long relationships with us and we are often reappointed on commissions based
on the success of previous projects. These clients include oil refining companies, international
traders, storage leasing terminal owners, bunkering companies, state organisations and
EPC contractors.
LNG facilities
Mott MacDonald has undertaken a technical,
economic/financial and environmental
review of proposed terminal configurations
and locations for what will be the first
LNG terminal in Kenya, on the east coast
of Africa. The project is expected to make
a substantial contribution to Kenyas
energy security.
For many years LNG has been the fastest growing segment of the natural gas market.
This demand for gas means supplying LNG looks set to challenge producers, engineers,
project developers, financiers and governments well into the future.
We deal with all aspects and phases of LNG developments, from gas gathering and trunkline
feed infrastructure, through liquefaction and regasification facilities, to interfacing power
developments and distribution systems. We undertake engineering services, feasibility
studies, master plans and due diligence studies. We also act as lenders/owners engineer
and provide ad-hoc technical advice.
Mott MacDonald has extensive technical capabilities in the planning, design and construction
supervision of all aspects of LNG facilities. We are unique in our ability to provide all the
process, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical and maritime engineering capabilities within one
company. This puts us at the forefront of technological design, having provided new options
for electrically driven LNG (e-LNG) plants and evaluated floating storage regasification unit
(FSRU) design.
In recent years we have been particularly active in evaluating the feasibility of proposed
regasification terminals, considering technical, environmental, safety and regulatory issues,
as well as economic and market drivers.
