The EMBA has been an exceptional

experience, both personally and
professionally. Im not from London,
so making new contacts with the local
business community has been just as
vital as linking to the Schools huge global
network. In addition, I have developed
a close group of friends who I know will
offer support and advice into the future.

The Executive MBA broadened my

perspectives. I met some inspirational
people, both in my own class and across
other programmes. A real transfer of
knowledge took place, since many of my
classmates worked in areas I had no prior
knowledge of, and vice versa. Its a great
feeling to have such a global, high-calibre
group of friends I can call on for help.

Being a mother, full-time employee,

student and entrepreneur is a challenging
yet joyful journey. My experience
with London Business School was all
about engaging and exchanging ideas,
knowledge and cultures. I found passion
and quality in every aspect of the learning
experience. I will always enjoy and continue
to be a part of this family.

and responsibilities you face, this course
delivers a framework to draw on your own
managerial experience.
Understanding the International
Macroeconomy

corporate environment and backdrop
against which firms operate. Consider how
value is created, how technology impacts

Your personal
leadership journey
Gain the knowledge, skills and attributes required for
effective leadership that will last you a lifetime

A great manager is not automatically a

good leader. Managers may have the
skills to carry out operations and maintain
the status quo, but leaders drive change
and inspire those around them to new
heights of performance. So, how will you
inspire people to follow you?
True leadership is about maximising
your personal impact by understanding
your unique attributes and the difference
you can make to your organisation. Our
Executive MBA supports your individual
leadership journey through a process of
continuous personal development. By
understanding a series of perspectives
on leadership and exploring leadership
style through interactive learning, you will
develop your own unique capabilities.

Leadership development
Your leadership development journey
begins at Orientation and is grounded
in rigorous academic research. A
360-degree assessment gives you
detailed insight into the strengths and
weaknesses of your current leadership
behaviour.
This helps you to find new and better
ways of leading as yourself. It also
establishes a framework for setting
tangible, tactical goals from day one.
Practical skills portfolio
We provide a range of practical
skills training to complement your
transformation from effective manager
to inspiring leader. These sessions not
only give you the techniques to handle
the responsibilities of leadership, but
also a deeper understanding of how to
present yourself more authentically in your
leadership role.

Some of the most popular practical skills

workshops include:
Presenting at the Next Level tools and
techniques to plan, rehearse and deliver
presentations with more impact
Handling Conflict learn to confront and
manage conflict openly
Business Writing understand how to
structure clear, written communications
a core business skill
Performance Management practise the
skills needed for giving and processing
clear feedback
Negotiation explore proven tools,
techniques and tactics of principled
negotiation

The Executive MBA provides you

with a leadership toolkit, which you
can immediately apply to your work.
This is a clear advantage for someone
working in an industry that is constantly
developing and integrating within an
ever changing environment.
Dr. Zubair Hussain (British), EMBA (London) 2007,
Senior VP Head of Global Regulatory Affairs, Ipsen
Journey by Dominika Sroczak

International Assignment
Explore the themes of development and globalisation first-hand
in a dynamic environment, and consider their implications for
yourself, your organisation and the world economy

Global impact
Designed to develop your skills in
managing across boundaries and
coping with ambiguity, the International
Assignment is your opportunity to
undertake a week-long project in a key
global business location.
Working as part of a group, you
experience the way business is
conducted in other economies and
markets. It tests your ability to apply skills
in an unfamiliar business environment
and provides genuine benefits to the
companies you are working with.
Expand your network
The International Assignment also gives
you the opportunity to work alongside
students from other degree programmes,
widening your professional network. With
a choice of location and the option to
take part in more than one assignment,
this is your chance to gain knowledge
and understanding of a different industry,
economy and geographic location.
Host companies arrange guest speaker
and alumni sessions. Described as
a highlight by many students, the
International Assignment is also highly
beneficial for the host organisation.

Explore different sectors

At the end of the weeks assignment,
your group presents its findings to senior
executives, a written report to the
company and an academic report to
the School.
The portfolio of International Assignments
offers a choice of theme and location.
Participating organisations have included
a mining company, government research
organisation, advertising agency, retail
bank, supermarket chain, security
company, computer manufacturer,
construction firm, a zoo, radio station
and city council.
One International Assignment is
compulsory and you have the option of
undertaking a second one at additional
cost, as part of your electives.

Our programme team, faculty and alumni guide and inspire you
throughout this highly challenging and life-changing Executive MBA

Committing to the experience

Your Executive MBA runs alongside your
work. Its a demanding schedule, requiring
commitment, drive and motivation,
especially so if family life has to be fitted
in, too. Your timetable is dependent on
where you choose to study and parts one
and two also mean making arrangements
to complete modules such as electives
and the International Assignment.
In addition to timetabled learning, you
should allow for about 20 hours of study
outside the classroom.
Support sytems
To support you throughout this intensive
experience, dedicated programme
managers, based in London and Dubai,
help you benefit as much as possible
from School facilities and events, and
ensure you make the most of your time
both socially and academically.
The Schools intranet can be globally
accessed and offers selected course
materials, library catalogues, faculty
research, discussion forums and
electronic journals. It is also a valuable
networking tool connecting you with other
members of the School community.
Global community
With excellent international transport links
and a timetable that maximises working
and learning time, our London and Dubai
locations are ideal for commuters from
Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
Approximately one third of students live
outside the UK and the UAE, and commute
to London and/or Dubai for classes.

It is difficult to fit an EMBA into whats

likely to be an already busy life and it
cannot be achieved without a great deal of
understanding especially from a spouse
or partner. The fact that the programme
happens around work and life, however,
means that you never lose context and it is
easy to apply the learning very quickly and
to return to class with an insight to offer.

The alumni view

Where does an Executive MBA at London Business
School lead? Well let some of our graduates tell you

My role with the Executive Council in Abu

Dhabi involves performance reporting
across areas including health, education
and infrastructure. Theres also a focus on
planning; Abu Dhabi is rapidly expanding,
and managing these areas is challenging
and exciting. It was this that led me to
apply for the EMBA programme. I knew
of the Schools strong ranking and wanted
to continue working while I studied.

The programme changed my perspective.

In lectures, Id suddenly realise I could
improve my approach and start thinking
about how Id manage situations
differently in the office. I also got a huge
rush listening to guest speakers, many of
whom were successful entrepreneurs.

Lidia Chmel (Russian),

EMBA (London) 2012,
Founder and CEO, Mamas Dream club

My career started out very differently

I was as a professional handball
player in Denmark but by the age of
25, Id decided to move towards an
entrepreneurial career path.

After 13 years in finance, I wanted a

change and I needed a broader cross
section of knowledge and skills to help
me. The confidence boost I got from
London Business Schools EMBA
programme certainly provided this.

The programme reignited my

entrepreneurial spirit. I created GoViral
which was bought five years later by AOL,
which then purchased The Huffington
Post. The CEO and founder of the title
asked me to develop a strategy to roll
out the brand internationally, and now
as CEO of The Huffington Post, I am in
the process of executing the strategy,
focusing on opening in new markets,
developing video content and verticals.

Many courses stand out, such as

Developing Effective Managers and
Organisations, which explored leadership,
decision-making and creative problem
solving. It changed how I think my
thinking is now more structured, and I find
it easier to mobilise individuals. This has
resulted in a more consistent, collective
approach that has empowered my team.

My challenge is to build great things and

help The Huffington Post to become
a global media brand, by applying the
sound knowledge and frameworks that
I gained on the EMBA programme.

The programme changed my perspective

again and again. In lectures Id realise I had
been using the wrong approach to a situation
and immediately started thinking about how I
would deal with it differently back in the office.
Zeina El Kaissi (Lebanese), EMBA (Dubai) 2012,
Senior Project Manager, General Secretariat of the Executive Council in Abu Dhabi

Id never
have had the
courage to
start my own
company
without the
EMBA.

Jimmy Maymann (Danish),

EMBA (London) 2005,
CEO, The Huffington Post

I spent five years at advertising firm Leo

Burnett, and it was during this period that
I completed the Executive MBA at London
Business School. How you work with
cases and apply the tools is a real eyeopener and extremely useful. Significant
value was gained in discovering the
fundamental dynamics of my character
I am good at deciding where to focus
my time. And with my job, family and a
huge workload, I really had to prioritise
and become laser-focused on the things
that mattered. Developing these critical
skills equipped me to progress to the next
stage of my career.

The programme has helped me develop

my leadership and change-management
skills. Studying alongside other
experienced professionals from a range of
industries was intensely thoughtprovoking, and we all contributed our
experiences and challenged each other.

Both the London and Dubai schedules

are packed with lectures, guest speakers,
coaching, and networking events and
I loved every minute. The experience
provides concrete business benefits, too;
I now have a much stronger knowledge
base across economic, finance and
accounting, so Im better equipped to
manage government budgets and
expenses. Understanding how businesses
succeed has enabled me to provide better
public sector policies and initiatives, and
to employ more efficient methodologies.

How you
work with
case studies
and apply the
tools was a
real eyeopener.

I expanded my business toolkit, but

where Id expected a solely academic
experience, I also found practical support
of my personal and career development.
Discussions and assignments made me
think deeply about my goals and values,
encouraging me to focus on the impact
that my work has.
Id never have had the courage to start
my own company without the EMBA.
Exploring case studies and hearing from
guest speakers who had founded their
own companies showed me that it was
possible to change direction and still
be successful. Understanding general
management was also a revelation.
Now I deal with a lot of third parties
and, with limited resources, I find myself
regularly referring to my Negotiation and
Bargaining course. The practical tools
and strategies I learned help me negotiate
better conditions, prices and deals for all
concerned. My skills have already saved
me lots of money in small and major deals.
Timetabled on Fridays and Saturdays,
the format allowed me to combine family,
work and other commitments. I expected
a lot from the EMBA, but the programme
delivered that, and more.
