In this exercise, follow the structure of DDC, develop a mini classification scheme in an area of your own
choice (in the past I have asked students to develop a classification scheme for kitchen utensils based on
what items they have in their kitchens, this semester I would like to give you more flexibility—be
creative!)
If you choose concrete objects, especially everyday objects at home (e.g. kitchen utensils) or work (e.g.
office supplies) rather than abstract concepts (e.g. computer science), please do some research on
“literary warrant” in the textbook (p. 392).
1. Introduction:
5. for each main class, at least three divisions (X10, X20, X30, …);
9. conclusions and experiences (summarize what you have learned and your thoughts; you may
add what you would do if you would do it again
Grading will be based on the overall quality of the classification scheme and quality of writing.
Assignments that meet the minimum requirements will get 12 points.
CUTTER TABLE (1st character: 1st letter, 2 numbers representing the following letters)
for example, colour cutter for MAGENTA (MAG): M28; pattern cutter 2 A I Q Y Ø/Ö/Ô
for STRIPES (STR): S53. 3 B J R Z Å
4 C K S É Ï/Î
If you get the same cutter as another pattern or colour, expand it by
another character. Once they become more than 5 characters long, 5 D L T È Ë/Ê
return to the original 3 character cutter and add 1 to the final digit. So 6 E M U À Ü/Û
(STR) S53 -> (STRIP) S5329, if the same as another -> (STR +1) S54.
