Certain features and capabilities are only applicable to PhoneGnome users using the
PhoneGnome box. The following conventions are used in this document.
The icon indicates that the specified feature or service requires the PhoneGnome box.
General Information
PhoneGnome is a service that lets users take advantage of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) calling and
features using their current telephone or PC/Mac. Unlike other services that require all users to
use the same method of communications, PhoneGnome lets each user use the method they
prefer:
• Use our simple web-activated technology to place calls without the need for any software.
You and your friend simply activate an account - it's free - and you can talk to each other free
using your regular phone and you don't need to be online to receive free calls, only to initiate
calls.
• Use our Free PC software if you're more comfortable using a PC to make calls (and get an
even wider free calling area).
• Purchase the amazing PhoneGnome Box and get more free features and the ultimate in
convenience.
Your friends can use the method of calling they prefer, while you use the method you prefer.
There are no handles, nicknames, or new phone numbers to learn. You just call the phone
numbers you already know.

1 Getting Started
For setup of a PhoneGnome box outside the US/Canada, connect the PhoneGnome box per the
Quick Setup Guide and then follow the instructions at the following website to complete the
hardware setup: http://my.phonegnome.com/intlsetup
This is one of the wonderful things about PhoneGnome: you continue to use the phone numbers
you already have; you don't need to learn a new special PhoneGnome number -- just keep using
the phone numbers already know!
If you have the PhoneGnome box (hardware) it is the phone line you plugged into your
PhoneGnome LINE jack.
When using the My PhoneGnome website, this number is your login username. Select the
country from the pull-down options and enter the phone number without the country code, and
without any prefix or punctuation (no spaces, hyphens, etc) For the US/Canada, this is simply
your 10-digit telephone number.
Specifically, you must consider how the number is called from outside your country. For example,
if your country code is 44 and people call from from the U.S. by dialing 011448444848908 then
the number you must provide on the My PhoneGnome setup is that number as dialed from the
U.S., with the 01144 stripped off. In this case, the telephone number used on the
my.phonegnome.com site would be all digits after 01144, or 8444848908 after selecting the
United Kingdom, from the pull-down list. You can also enter the number as simply
+448444848908.
This number is used to setup your PhoneGnome service and ensures the PhoneGnome system
adjusts for normal dialing in your region (so in your country, you will dial as normal, the same way
as always). The "international" form of the number described above applies only when using the
3
my.phonegnome.com site and when setting up a PhoneGnome for international use, not for
when dialing with the PhoneGnome connected phone or via your My PhoneGnome account.
1. When you visit the http://my.phonegnome.com web site, enter information about
yourself, including the telephone number connected to the LINE port of the
PhoneGnome box, your name, and email address.
2. PhoneGnome will send an email to the email address you specify containing a PIN code.
3. Follow the instructions in the above email to register your PhoneGnome phone.
1. When you visit the http://my.phonegnome.com web site, enter information about
yourself, including the telephone number as described above, your name, and email
address.
2. PhoneGnome will send an email to the email address you specify containing a PIN code
and verification link.
3. Follow the instructions in the above email to complete the creation of your PhoneGnome
account.
When you click the verification link contained in the email described above at step 2,
PhoneGnome will call you at the telephone number you provided (that of the PhoneGnome
account you are creating) to verify that the number is valid. Therefore you must supply a valid
email address and working telephone number to create a PhoneGnome account.
2 Call Functions
This chapter explores how to make a call, how to answer a call, and the functions available during
a call.
To place a call with PhoneGnome, you dial the person's telephone number, even when calling
another PhoneGnome member. PhoneGnome knows what numbers belong to PhoneGnome
members, and which ones don't.
In Short... Regardless of where you live, or what kind of PhoneGnome account you have, to place
a call, you dial using the normal calling conventions for your location. You do not need to learn a
new dialing mechanism.
4
2.1.1 For users within the US/Canada
When entering a telephone number, you dial the number using the dialing method for your
specific local region. So in the U.S., one generally dials 1-areacode-number such as
14085551234. To place an international call from the U.S. one dials 011 following by the country-
code, then area code, etc.
For PhoneGnome members with the PhoneGnome box, calls can be placed using 7-digit dialing
or any other local dialing conventions, and the call will be placed via your local phone service
provider (for additional options and settings see Local Dialing Rules below).
For PhoneGnome members with the PhoneGnome box outside the US, local calls can be placed
using any local dialing conventions (i.e. without the leading 0 prefix) and the call will be placed via
your local phone service provider.
Users of the PhoneGnome box can also automatically dial frequently called numbers with the
touch of two buttons. To program, press *74. Dial the single digit code under which the number is
to be stored (2-9). Dial the complete number to be stored just as if you were going to dial it
yourself. Listen for Confirmation tone (two short beeps). Hang up or repeat the sequence.
5
2.1.6 Advanced PhoneGnome Dialing Capabilities
In addition to the convenience of dialing plain phone numbers, advanced PhoneGnome users
may appreciate the following advanced dialing capabilities of the PhoneGnome service.
Since Skype handles are names rather than numbers, dialing a Skype user is normally
impractical with only a numeric telephone handset. You can dial a Skype user using the My
PhoneGnome website by entering that user in a special URI form: skype:username
You can also place a call to a plain phone number using your SkypeOut service by dialing
**75number
Note: Skype calling requires the PhoneGnome box and free GnomeLink for Skype feature
activated.
These codes can be used in the Quick Call box or they can be added to the your Contacts to
place click-to-dial calls and where they can be dialed with their assigned speed-dial code.
6
for 5 seconds between calls if you don't want to make a 3 way call. 3-Way Calling allows three
PhoneGnome users to conduct a totally free 3-way conference call.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to conduct 3-way conference with more than one PSTN user.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to transfer incoming call from existing phone line to another PSTN
destination.
When you receive a call, the caller's name and number will appear after the first ring - unless the
caller has chosen to block it or the number is unavailable.
Note: Requires service from phone company to receive Caller ID for calls arriving via existing
phone line. Always works for Internet calls.
While on the phone, a beep tone alerts you to another call. Press and release the flash button to
find out who is calling. Press and release the button again to return to your original call. To turn
7
off Call Waiting for a single call, press *70 before making the call. To turn off Call Waiting during a
call you must use Three-Way Calling, press and quickly release the flash button, dial *70 and
press and release the button again to return to your call. See Three-Way Calling for details. To
turn off Call Waiting permanently, press *56. You will hear a confirmation tone signaling your
request to cancel Call Waiting has been accepted. To turn Call Waiting back on, press *57.
Note: Requires disabling of Call Waiting service from the phone company. PhoneGnome is not compatible with Call
Waiting service on your existing phone line.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to forward incoming call from existing phone line to another PSTN
destination.
At its core, the phone is a tool we use to converse and connect with one another. A large
percentage of these interactions are with the same people, friends, loved ones, and business
associates. Long before wikis, blogs, and social networking sites came along, people were
maintaining their real-world social networks, and the phone has been, and continues to be, a
powerful tool in building and maintaining those relationships.
Historically, interactions using a telephone have been simple voice interactions, mostly on a one-
to-one basis. With PhoneGnome 2.0 we are taking steps toward more sophisticated multi-modal
8
interactions. PhoneGnome users can now create their own profiles, invite friends, send voice
messages via email, and manage contacts on-line.
The Telco 2.0 blog says it well when they say “the next generation of communications is social,
contextual and collaborative.” The new My PhoneGnome home page for PhoneGnome 2.0 shows
a few steps in this direction.
The information displayed will vary depending on your particular usage history. Generally, what
you’ll find here are things of interest to you, updates to your PhoneGnome social network. It’s
personal and relevant.
Note: Voicemail tab only appears when Premium Voicemail feature is activated.
3.2 Phonebook
The My PhoneGnome Phonebook provides a mechanism to store your contacts. To add a
contact, click the [Add Contact] link. The following page will be displayed.
9
Enter the name, phone number, an optional type classification (home, office, mobile, etc.) and
optional email address.
Any phone number that can be dialed from the phone can be placed into the on-line Phone Book
and called using click-to-dial, not just VoIP destinations.
SIP addresses can also be entered into the Phonebook to allow convenient free calling to any
SIP user in the world (see 2.1.6 Advanced PhoneGnome Dialing Capabilities above).
Add contacts using any standard web browser and click the phone icon to place a call.
Icon Action
Edit contact details
Delete contact (confirmation will be displayed first)
Send a voice message to the contact
Call the contact
Enter a number for the remote location exactly as dialed by your Long Distance Internet Calling
Service (See Low Cost Internet Calling below). After setting a Remote Click-to-Dial Location,
when you use the click-to-dial feature or send a voice message, PhoneGnome will ring the
desired Remote Click-to-Dial Location, and then place the call or send the voice message using
PhoneGnome.
Icon Action
Send voice message (if email address is available)
10
Add to Phonebook (contacts)
Call now
Note: when adding contacts to your My PhoneGnome Phonebook, the phone number is provided
in a generic form, not necessarily how you dial. So when you add the contact to your personal
contact list, you should adjust the number field for how you would normally dial that number. This
primarily applies to International numbers but can also apply to local numbers.
3.4 Settings
The Settings page can be used to change your personal information associated with your
account, such as name and email address.
3.4.1 Timezone
The Settings page is also used for configuring your timezone. When PhoneGnome sets up your
account, it tries to determine the proper timezone. The Settings page can be used to override the
calculated timezone in cases where PhoneGnome was unable to determine the proper settings.
PhoneGnome also assumes that Daylight Savings Time is observed and provides a setting in
cases where Daylight Savings Time is not observed. PhoneGnome automatically adjusts for
Daylight Savings Time, if applicable.
Warning: If you change these settings without explicit instructions from PhoneGnome
Support, you do so at your own risk. Improper use of these advanced settings can
render your PhoneGnome inoperable. You could miss calls, outgoing calls may fail,
voice quality may be degraded and other harmful effects may result from misuse of
these advanced settings. If you change these settings without explicit instructions from
PhoneGnome Support, please be advised that if you require technical support to
diagnose or repair problems that turn out to be a result of unapproved settings changes,
you will be subject to up to $100 service fees or termination of your PhoneGnome
service.
11
3.4.3.1 PSTN Line Gain
Generally, volume issues on PSTN calls (those calls using your local phone service) are related
to the wiring or some electrical condition on the LINE side of the PhoneGnome box.
If the volume of PSTN calls is too low, try adjusting the Gain toward louder by one click and then
click Save and try the phone that way for a day or several calls at least (to give PhoneGnome
time to auto-adjust to new setting). If you need it louder, try one click again. Please do not adjust
by more than one click at a time, and wait a day or at least several calls before making additional
changes.
Raising the Gain (volume) too high can have negative consequences, so you'll have to see how it
works for you. If there are any negative consequences (such as scratchy or distorted audio),
you'll probably want to focus on the wiring (there may be a bad connection, a loose wire, a place
where water is getting in, etc.) . PhoneGnome is much more sensitive to electrical conditions on
you telephone like than a simple analog phone, so improper wiring or other problems on the your
telephone wiring may be at fault, even if you cannot hear anything unusual on your other phones.
If you experience echo on PSTN calls, try reducing the gain, one click at a time, waiting a day
(several calls), before making further adjustments.
The Custom setting says to use the simple distance-based algorithm to determine local calls
(default 12 mile radius, see Local Calling Radius below). If 10-digit dialing is required in your
area, then selecting the Custom setting will generally produce the desired results
If you want to fine tune each and every local prefix, or, in other words, explicitly set every prefix
that you want to classify as local, you can use the Set Local Calling Prefixes advanced option
described below. However, once you click Set Local Calling Prefixes (even once) the Local
Calling Radius setting is ignored and you will then and forever afterwards have to manually
maintaining the list of calling prefixes that you want treated as local. The radius setting will no
longer be in effect and will be forever ignored. The Set Local Calling Prefixes feature is
12
available for extreme cases for advanced users only. We discourage its use generally -- most of
us don't have the time and it's not necessary since the above distance-based automatic
calculation provides a much simpler solution. If you use Set Local Calling Prefixes and later
require technical support as a result, you may incur additional service fees or risk cancellation of
your PhoneGnome service.
3.5 Features
The Features page offers a number of free and premium services and features for use with your
PhoneGnome account. The specific features and services available will change as new services
are introduced.
The Features page is a door to your own next-generation, highly personalized telephony
experience. Therefore this manual devotes an entire chapter, Chapter 4 Detailed Feature
Descriptions (page 16 below), to this important subject.
This information can help you choose between service plans, such as helping you determine
whether a flat-rate plan or per-minute plan is best for you, based on your actual call history.
The Call Analysis page provides sub-navigation for access to call logs, recorded calls, and other
functions described in the sections that follow.
13
3.6.1 Received Calls
Need to know when a client last called? It's in your PhoneGnome call logs — dated and time
stamped. Your Call Logs are accessible from the moment you connect PhoneGnome and are
always available from any web browser.
Call logs provide information on the type of call (e.g., Internet, landline, etc.), activity (missed,
etc.), the length of the call, and the date and time. You can use this information for easy and
accurate cost analysis.
14
3.6.3 Placed Calls
3.6.4 My Network
This page shows other PhoneGnome members in your calling community. Calls placed to phone
numbers of other PhoneGnome users will be listed on this page. Also listed here will be calls
received from other PhoneGnome members.
You can grow your network of free calling by clicking the button to encourage
your friends to create their own My PhoneGnome account so you can call each other absolutely
free! Everybody wins! The more people using PhoneGnome, the more FREE calls everybody can
make!
3.6.6 Summary
Clicking Summary returns to main Call Analysis summary page view.
15
4 Detailed Feature Descriptions
The Features page represents a marketplace of Enhanced Voice Services available to
PhoneGnome subscribers and includes features and services provided directly by PhoneGnome
as well as services and features provided by third parties.
In general, click Activate link to activate or subscribe to a given feature/service. Some features
have settings or options that can be managed with the feature’s Edit or Settings link. Most
features have on-line help or information via a Learn More link or a separate help link on the
settings page for the given feature.
Friends and others can press "1" to ring through. Telemarketers that violate the "legal message"
can suffer harsh penalties.
Privacy Mode only applies when no caller ID is provided. Most calls won't be effected by Privacy
Mode.
Privacy Mode works on all types of inbound calls, whether from the Internet or from the traditional
phone system.
A related feature is TeleMarketer Drop. If you answer a call from a telemarketer, you can deliver
them to the "legal message" by performing a flash (to get a second dial tone), then *98 (blind
transfer), then at the special transfer dial tone, dial **777# and hang up.
Telemarketer Screening and TeleMarketer Drop are included free with your PhoneGnome
service. There are no monthly fees associated with these features.
16
4.1.4 Basic Voicemail
Basic Voicemail is a free PhoneGnome feature. If enabled, Basic Voicemail will record a caller's
message and send that message as an attached (WAV) file to your designated e-mail address;
the WAV format is standard and should be playable across all operating systems.
Use Voicemail to retrieve messages left by callers when you are away from your phone. See who
left messages and when, and even listen to messages through your my.phonegnome.com
website. New messages are indicated on the Voicemail page. Plus, when a message is received
you'll get a "stutter" dial tone on that phone (this tone will illuminate the message waiting
indication on your telephone).
Unlike most services, PhoneGnome doesn't lock you into a specific provider or plan for calls to
regular and mobile phones that aren't free.
When using PhoneGnome service with the PhoneGnome box, no calling plans are required to
make calls to any phone. When there is no plan activated, non-Free calls are delivered using your
home phone service, just as if the PhoneGnome box weren't there. However, by activating a net
calling plan, you can enjoy incredibly low rates to phones worldwide.
There are two steps required to setup an Internet Calling service. The first step is to create an
account for the Low Cost Calling service. The second step is to activate that account for a given
category of calls. These steps will be described in the sections below.
Once one activates the Internet calling feature, there is nothing special required to place a call
using that service. One simply dials a number, normally, with no pins or access codes required. If
PhoneGnome can complete the call for free, it will, otherwise it will use the selected Internet
calling service. Users can get calling card or even better pricing to those places they cannot call
for free, with the convenience of dialing in the conventional way, using their normal home phone.
2. At the feature labeled "Low Cost Internet Calling" - select the "Edit" link, then - on the
page that opens - select the link "Add Internet Calling Service"
3. Review the listed service provider offerings and select the provider plan of your choice by
clicking the corresponding logo; this will display the service provider sign-up page; follow
the instructions on that page, and select the large button to open that provider's account
creation page.
17
4. Follow the selected service provider's account creation and payment process, during
which time you will obtain an account user name and password; depending on the
provider selected, the account user name and password will be provided on-line during
the sign-up process or will be sent to you via e-mail or postal mail.
5. Return to your my.phonegnome.com browser window (from step 3 above). Enter your
new Internet Calling account user name into the field labeled "SIP user name," enter your
password (sometimes called "secret") into the field labeled "SIP Password", and select
the "Save" button to save your Internet Calling account entries.
If you choose a plan/provider that is not one of our partners or affiliates (i.e. an untested vendor),
please be aware that you assume all risk associated with doing so. If we have not tested, or
certified the VoIP service provider (Internet Calling Service), we cannot provide support for that
provider. At the very least, if you are considering plans/providers that are not one of our
supported plans, please check for reports from other PhoneGnome owners to get a sense of
compatibility etc. at the following page (provided as a convenience to our customers):
http://my.phonegnome.com/allreviews
And we also suggest asking about the provider/plan on the PhoneGnome support forums:
http://www.phonegnome.com/support/
Also see: Notes for those familiar with other VoIP Services on page 31.
18
• To configure your PhoneGnome to use a given Internet Calling Service for domestic long
distance calls, pull down the textbox labeled "Place Domestic Calls Using:" to display the
available Internet Calling accounts - you should see the Internet Calling Service account
you just created; select that account.
• To configure your PhoneGnome to use a given Internet Calling Service for international
calls, pull down the textbox labeled "Place International Calls Using:" to display available
Internet Calling Service account - you should see the Internet Calling service provider
account you just created; select that account.
Select the "Save" button at the bottom of the form to save these new settings - you will then be
returned to the main Features page.
You can configure many Internet Calling service accounts, but you can only activate accounts for
the three classes of calls as shown above. You can direct a call to an alternative provider by
dialing **877nnumber where n is the number assigned to the desired service, as displayed in the
pull-down menus shown above.
• Ring up to three additional numbers, plus your SoftGnome, all at the same time
• Take the call on any of the ringing phones. The other phones stop ringing and the caller
doesn't even know.
• If none of those numbers are answered, Ring a last stop number.
• If none of the numbers answer, the call will be delivered to voicemail (if enabled)
Enter up to three numbers in the Simultaneously Ring fields. These numbers will ring at the same
time as your home phone, and SoftGnome (if enabled). Ringing phones other than free
PhoneGnome compatible destinations requires activation of a Low Cost Internet Calling Service.
19
Answer the call at any of the ringing phones and the other phones stop ringing and the call
completes to the answered phone. It is transparent to the caller -- they won't even know you're
away from home.
Enter a number in the Last Stop field and if no one answers any of the simultaneously ringing
phones, they all stop ringing and the Last Stop number will be called. If that number isn't
answered, the call will be sent to Voicemail (if enabled).
Numbers should be entered as though dialed long-distance even for local calls (to cause them to
be directed to the Internet Calling Service).
SIP Addresses may be used in any of the fields. A SIP address is like an email address for
Internet standards-based free interoperable calling. They look like this: sip:user@domain.com
(e.g. sip:johnsmith@proxy01.sipphone.com)
4.1.8 MobileGnome
MobileGnome lets one use their PhoneGnome features and calling plans from any phone.
Enter the phone number of the phone you wish to use to access PhoneGnome features (exactly
as it is presented by the Caller-ID service on your home phone line) and then when you call your
home number (the number connected to your PhoneGnome) instead of your phone ringing,
PhoneGnome will answer and prompt for your PIN code. Upon acceptance of the valid PIN (the
same PIN used to sign in to the My PhoneGnome site), PhoneGnome will present a dial tone and
allow you to dial, just as if you were at home.
Placing outgoing calls to other than free PhoneGnome compatible destinations requires activation
of a Low Cost Internet Calling Service.
Another way to use this feature if you do not have Caller-ID service on your home phone line is to
enable the free PhoneGnome Voicemail feature and then when you call you number, let the
PhoneGnome Voicemail answer, and during the outgoing message, press 0 (zero). You will be
prompted for your PIN and can then use the MobileGnome feature to place an outgoing call, as
above.
Enter "*" for the calling number to cause MobileGnome to be triggered for ALL incoming calls (i.e.
useful if you have a dedicated number used only for MobileGnome pass-thru dialing).
20
4.1.9 SoftGnome Remote Access
Whether across the room, across town, or halfway around the globe, SoftGnome lets any
PhoneGnome owner use their PhoneGnome service just as if using an extension phone at home.
Use SoftGnome just for placing calls, or have it ring wherever you are at the same time as your
home phone.
Use SoftGnome on your PC to connect via the Internet to your PhoneGnome to make outgoing
calls to other PhoneGnome users, to traditional telephone numbers, and to SIP numbers. Users
with the PhoneGnome Box can also receive calls dialed to your regular home phone number on
your PC using SoftGnome.
The setup is simple. Download the software, install it on your PC. The first time you run the
software, you will be prompted for a username and password. These can be found on the
SoftGnome page under View SIP Credentials.
• Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003.
• Pentium 500MHz or above with at least 32MB RAM (64MB for 2000/XP/2003).
• A sound card that supports full-duplex audio (with latest drivers installed)
• A headset with an in-built mic, or a microphone and a set of speakers
21
• Broadband connection
Download the free SoftGnome Express Talk software from the following link:
http://www.phonegnome.com/store/SoftGnomeSetup.exe
• XLite
• SJPhone
• GizmoProject
• Asterisk PBX
To configure the third-party software, use the information on the View SIP Credentials page,
where you will find the specific settings for your SoftGnome account, including username and
password, as well as general settings, such as:
Configure your device with your SoftGnome account credentials and then use that device to place
calls using your home phone service and as your home phone when at home or connected to a
Wi-fi hotspot or other high-speed Internet connection.
• Place calls to Skype users by adding them to your PhoneGnome Phonebook and using
click-to-dial.
• View the on-line status of Skype buddies directly on your My PhoneGnome Phonebook.
• Call Skype users directly from your ordinary phone using a speed dial code assigned to a
Skype user.
• Send calls to SkypeOut by dialing **75 number on your normal phone.
• Answer Skype calls on your normal home phone -- the same phone where you answer all
your other calls.
22
And it's FREE!
Requirements:
To send a call to SkypeOut via GnomeLink dial **75 number (**SK number) where number is the
full telephone number, including country code (GnomeLink inserts the "+" for you).
Download the PhoneGnome GnomeLink Plug-in for Skype from the following link:
http://my.phonegnome.com/GnomeLinkSkype.exe
For full instructions on setting up and using the GnomeLink for Skype feature, refer to the manual,
available as a PDF download at the following link:
http://my.phonegnome.com/GnomeLinkSkype10a.pdf
No matter where you go, no matter what you do, you are always in touch, always connected. But
being that reachable can become a problem. Instead of getting more work done, you're getting
less. The truth is some calls are important and some can wait.
iotum understands which calls you want to take, which can wait, and the best way to reach you.
Iotum enables PhoneGnome to deliver the right call at the right place, at the right time.
By paying attention to your schedule, IM presence, calling habits, your location and your personal
priorities iotum can:
23
It's simple: important calls get through, unimportant calls don't.
Requirements:
You can say the name of any contact in your PhoneGnome address book, and your
PhoneGnome will dial the number for you. You don't need to remember their number, just their
name.
Don't worry -- just say "stop" before the call is placed, or hang up.
On your My PhoneGnome page, choose the Features tab, and click Deactivate next to "Tellme
DialTone 2.0". You can use this to turn the feature on or off at your convenience, but remember
that this takes a short time, as your PhoneGnome will need to be updated.
Firstly, if you have two contacts with very similar (or identical) names -- like Don and Donna, John
and Jon, etc. -- then one could be being recognized in place of the other. The only solution to that
is to make the names more distinct (by changing "Jon" to "Jonathan", for example, and by adding
last names). If you have two contacts that are actually the same person (work and mobile
numbers, for example), then you should use the same name for each and use the Type feature in
My PhoneGnome to make this explicit. You can then say things like "John Smith at work" to
choose which number you would like to dial.
Secondly, you might not be saying exactly what's in the contact's Name field. We advise you to
enter only the contact's name ("John Smith") rather than adding decorative information ("John at
Acme", "John (mobile)"). DialTone 2.0 will try to work around these where it can, but it's not
perfect. In most of these cases you'll need to say every word in the name field.
24
Finally, there is always the possibility of problems with your phone or connection. Hang up and lift
the receiver again; if the problem doesn't go away, check that your audio quality is good on the
PhoneGnome echo test (**600).
Dialing a number on your telephone keypad should pass straight through as if the DialTone 2.0
feature were disabled, so 911 (and other!) calls should work as usual. If, for some reason, 911
calls do not place correctly, you should unplug your PhoneGnome's power cable. This will give
you a normal dial tone.
Calls to your Personal Phone Numbers ring to your PhoneGnome phone with your other calls and
the number is dedicated to you.
Now when someone calls the number listed, your PhoneGnome will ring.
25
Appendix A: International PhoneGnome Box Setup
Fully automatic self-provisioning is only implemented for the US/Canada. PhoneGnome devices
delivered outside the US/Canada require a simple user-assisted setup process.

Appendix C: About SIP and PhoneGnome
PhoneGnome uses the industry standard SIP technology and embraces open, interoperable
standards wherever possible.
To dial a SIP address, simply enter the SIP address in URI form such as sip:user@service (for
example sip:joe@example.com). Such SIP addresses can be called via the 'Quick Call" feature,
entered into your Contacts and called via click-to-dial, and even used as find-me/follow-me
numbers.
Friends and others with SIP compatible software and services can call you at the following SIP
address: sip:number@sip.phonegnome.com
In this case, number is your telephone number including country code. For US/Canada, this
means 1 followed by your 10-digit phone number (no punctuation).
Address Description
rX-number@sip.phonegnome.com Call PhoneGnome number with distinctive ring X
where X is 1-9.
vm-number@sip.phonegnome.com Direct to voicemail for account with phone number
number.
dr-number@sip.phonegnome.com "Direct ring" the phone attached to the
PhoneGnome box with phone number number
without performing Find-me forward/call
processing.
mg-number@sip.phonegnome.com Invoke MobileGnome for the specified
PhoneGnome account
In all cases above, number is as defined for the primary SIP address, the full telephone number
with country-code.

Appendix D: PhoneGnome and NAT (Home Gateway Routers)
PhoneGnome's patent-pending technology is designed to detect and automatically function
properly with any broadband router. No configuration of the router is required nor recommended.
Our award-winning technology is known to work with hundreds of models of routers, including
those from major vendors such as Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear.
We cannot provide a specific list of routers PhoneGnome works with because it is designed to
work with all makes and models and since new makes and models are coming out all the time,
any such list would always be incomplete. Some customers have experienced problems with
Netopia and Airlink routers. However, at the same time, other customers have used routers from
these vendors without problems, so we are reluctant to even list these few brands, since clearly it
can depend on the specific installation and specific router configurations.
The vast majority of customers simply plug PhoneGnome in, and it just works.
If PhoneGnome's automatic router detection and management is not working with your router, we
cannot provide settings or diagnostic procedures for specific routers.
In general, check the behavior of the STATUS light of the PhoneGnome during power on of the
PhoneGnome (on the end of PhoneGnome where the RJ-11 ports are). If it blinks in a regular
pattern that includes a series of fast and slow blinks, report that pattern to us. Next, check on
your router to see if the PhoneGnome has been able to obtain an IP address via DHCP by
looking for the PhoneGnome MAC address in the router DHCP table (refer to your router
documentation).
Try checking SPI (stateful packet inspection) options on your router. Try the available settings
tracking each change so you can get back where you started. With each test of a setting change,
do the following:
2. reboot router
3. wait 15 seconds
Also check 'firewall' settings options. Try each available setting, in turn, as above. If your router
has ALG (application level gateways), ensure the SIP ALG is disabled.
You may need to disconnect or shut down other SIP VoIP devices or software on your LAN or on
your PC(s).
After performing the checks above and confirming all connections, per the Quick Setup Guide,
you are still experiencing problems, you may seek further assistance on the forums:

Appendix E: Notes for those familiar with other VoIP Services
PhoneGnome is a bit different than other VoIP products and in particular does not work like a
common “Broadband Phone” service with Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA). This can be
confusing to those like that have used VoIP before.
Typical “Broadband Phone” services are replacement phone services, providing essentially a
standard phone service to the customer. The telephone number, combined with services like
Voicemail, as well as outbound calling, are all bundled together in one package. With
PhoneGnome, in terms of a PSTN/VOIP provider, we must think of inbound and outbound as
separate. PhoneGnome lets customers use a VoIP service to place outbound calls (PSTN
termination) and a VoIP service that offers PSTN to VoIP can also be used to deliver calls placed
to a given PSTN number to your PhoneGnome (VoIP Origination, or Virtual Numbers). But these
two things are completely independent of each other with PhoneGnome. Most bundled
“Broadband Phone” services cannot be configured as a Low Cost Internet Calling Service
option with PhoneGnome – most such services don’t provide the SIP credentials to do so, and
those that do will not work properly because their operating model is a “bundled service” rather
than simply PSTN termination. However, such services can be used as the “local service”
(primary number) of a PhoneGnome account, including connecting the output of the device (ATA)
provided by the “Broadband Phone” service to the LINE port of the PhoneGnome box. In this
case, when PhoneGnome delivers a call via the “local service”, it is sending the call via the
“Broadband Phone” service ATA.
The above applies equally to phone service provided by your Cable provider as well.
The "home" number, or “primary” number, for a PhoneGnome box is always the number
associated with the telephone service plugged into the LINE port. However, you can add another
number (or several numbers), sometimes called a DID, that will also ring to your PhoneGnome.
You do so using the Worldwide Virtual Numbers feature on the PhoneGnome Features screen
as described on page 25.
For outbound calling, you have a choice of plans available, as described under Low Cost
Internet Calling on page 17.
