Two capacitors A and B with capacities 3F and 2F are charged to a potential difference of 100V
and 180V respectively. The plates of the capacitors are connected as shown in the figure with one
wire of each capacitor free. The upper plate of A is positive and that of B is negative. An uncharged
2F capacitor C with lead wires falls on the free ends to complete the circuit. Calculate:
(i) the final charge on the three capacitors, and
(ii) the amount of electrostatic energy stored in the system before and after completion of the circuit.
15. For the circuit shown, which of the following statements is true :
given by
(A) 1/k = 1/k1 + 1/k2 + 1/(2k3)
(B) 1/k = 1/(k1 + k2 ) + 1/(2k3 )
(C) k = (k1 k2)/(k1 + k2 ) + 2k3
(D) k = (k1 k3)/(k1 + k2 ) + (k2 k3)/(k2 + k2 )
14. Consider the situation shown in the figure. The capacitor A has a charge q on it whereas B is
uncharged. The charge appearing on the capacitor B a long time after the switch is closed is :
(A) Zero
(B) q/2
(C) q
(D) 2q
2. A small ball of mass 2 103 Kg having a charge of 1 C is suspended by a string of length 0.8 m.
Another identical ball having the same charge is kept at the point of suspension. Determine the
minimum horizontal velocity which should be imparted to the lower ball so that it can make complete
revolution.

Two identical capacitors have the same capacitance C. One of them is charged to potential V 1
and the other to V2. The negative ends of the capacitors are connected together. When the positive
ends are also connected, the decrease in energy of the combined system is
(A) 1/4 [C ( V12 - V22 )]
(B) 1/4 [C ( V12 + V22 )]
(C) 1/4 [C ( V1 - V2 )2]
(D) 1/4 [C ( V1 + V2 )2]
22.
The potential difference applied to an X-ray tube is 5kV and the current through it is 3.2 mA.
Then the number of electrons striking the target per second is
(A)
2 x 1016
(B)
5 x 106
(C)
1 x 1017
(D)
4 x 1015

Two infinitely long parallel wires carrying currents I = I0 sin wt in opposite directions are
placed a distance 3a apart. A square loop of side a of negligible resistance with a capacitor of
shown. Find the maximum current in the square loop. Also sketch the grap showing the variation of
charge on the upper plate of the capacitor as a function loop as positive.
