Snow and ice clearing laws in Ohio

(Rev. 1/7/10)
As far as Ohio law goes, homeowners don’t have a legal obligation to shovel sidewalks due to a natural accumulation of snow and ice, but this
doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least try to maintain them. In December 1993 the Ohio Supreme Court upheld this law when a guest attempted to sue
a homeowner in Franklin County for a slip and fall outside of the homeowner's house.

In the case Brinkman v. Ross, the court ruled that you are walking at your own risk when Mother Nature calls. The case stemmed from a visit by
the Brinkman’s to the home of the Ross’ in February 1989. Ms. Brinkman slipped outside the Ross home breaking her ankle. She sued her hosts in
Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. The court threw out the complaint, indicating that it had long been established that Ohio homeowners are
not obligated to remove natural accumulations of snow and ice.

The decision was reversed in the court of appeals, saying that if a homeowner knows of a hazardous condition and invites guests to visit, there is an
obligation to at least warn them. The case then went to the Ohio Supreme Court where the judgment was overturned.

It's up to your guests and other pedestrians to assume that due to the nature of Ohio’s winters, there's always a risk of
a slip or fall due to the natural accumulation of ice and snow. So let's be careful out there!

5 Things You probably Never Knew Your

Cell Phone Could Do

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car,
purse, and wallet.. Good information to have with you.)
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave
emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.
Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST
Emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find Yourself out of the coverage area
of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing
network to Establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can
be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday.
Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at home,
call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot
From your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the
mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to
you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has
the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will
restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.
This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your
phone: *#06#. A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your
handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code.
They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone
will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever
stole it can't use/sell it either.. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing
mobile phones.

FIFTH
Free Directory Service for Cells

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they
don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even
more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800)FREE411,
or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell
phone now.

SLOW DOWN PLEASE!

Dear Dutchland Woods Residents:

Over 37 combined years have been spent working in the classroom and on the school bus, be-
tween my husband and I. SAFETY of those children has always been a high priority. We love
children!! This is the reason for us writing this article. We have a SCHOOL ZONE in front of
our 2 school buildings on Dutchland Blvd, and it's time to SLOW DOWN and obey those
school zone times, which are posted. The times are from 7;15 am-10;30am. and again from
2:10 pm till 5;00 pm. The times are set according to each school start/finish time, allowing for
slower traffic 1 hour before and after those times. There are 22 schools in the Lakota district,
which is 67 square miles. Each school may have different start/finish times, so it's important to
observe the signs that are posted, or the yellow flashing lights. We must protect our children coming and going from school, those
who walk across Dutchland Blvd. from the neighborhood and the apartments, those staying after school for various activi-
ties...etc. Going 20 mph for a few feet to allow for the safety of our children should not be an inconvenience to any of us and
since we're all busy, we need to allow those few extra minutes.

Recently, Graeme George, long time DW resident was stopped by a deputy who said he was going 37 in the 20 mph zone. He
went to court in Hamilton and tried to convince the judge he wasn't going that fast. The judge said to either pay the fine or set a
date for court. He paid the fine without further complaint, instead of the $80.00 plus $100.00 court costs!

Moms.. dads...teens... so many of you are on the phone and totally ignoring the fact there are children coming and going from
school and buses are entering and leaving. Those schools have been there for over 20 years! PLEASE... LET'S ALL SLOW
DOWN, not only to save us the inconvenience of a ticket and expensive fees, but mainly for the SAFETY OF OUR NEIGHBOR-
HOOD CHILDREN! If you have teen drivers, please remind them to observe the school zone speed limits during the day. Let's
not have any of those precious young lives injured by our carelessness. They are not watching out for us, so we need to be watch-
ing out for them.

Larry and Bev Dowler

Brenda, I would like to add my daughter Gina Brown to your service list. She is an excellent masseuse. For one's own per-
sonal relaxation, physical needs, or to give a gift certificate to someone, a massage from Gina is a wonderful thing.
